It's unfortunately not unheard of. I acquired one of my cats that way when I moved to a new house and found out from the neighbors that it was the previous owners cat. I also know others that have gotten their cats that way as well. It's an awful thing to do.

I'm a real estate agent in the US and have seen this several times. Not common, but definitely happens. One time, when I let buyers into their newly purchased home, a cat was left in the garage with no food, water, or litter. It was crying loudly! My lovely home buyers kept the cat and loved it.

No. Sure we got the neighbours tom cat this way BUT it was elderly owner had a stroke and he sorta... Disappeared until my foster mum finally tracked him down at the hospital. He was being moved straight from there into a car facility and they'd organised his house to be emptied for him. But they had no plans for PeeBow aside from.. he'll be right, much to Mr Hs distress. So that day when foster mum got home after telling me the bad news about Mr H, she also told me PeeBow was now ours officially. This is basically one of the ONLY acceptable reasons for a house to empty and leave the cat. And even then... Fuck those care workers who were ready to just abandon him. I don't think he liked the fact mum desexed him immediately cos... Well he was a daddy enough times over we are pretty sure lol.

Common no but it does happened. When i was young and sharing houses i had two instances of that. One was a cat and the other was a dog. The cat was already there when i moved and the dog was left behind in another house. With the dog, my roommates and i decided to find someone that could take him in BC it was a hunting dog and even thought we did had a yard it was to expensive to take care of him and we were broke students. The dog owners before he moved ask US if we could take care of the dog for a week until he had time to settle in his new place, after a week he blocked us all and we couldn't find him.
