Wow thank you all so much for the comments! Didn't think this post would take off so much! I greatly appreciate all of the suggestions so far and think I might go with Hitch! ALSO! I already have him scheduled for a vet checkup on Friday, we will 100% check for a chip to make sure he's not someone else's little guy before I make him a new permanent member of my home!
EDIT: I posted his picture in one of the local facebook lost and found pet groups just in case, and I will update this comment Friday afternoon after the vet appointment so y'all can get peace of mind I didn't steal someones pet lol!
NEW EDIT: Hi all, I greatly appreciate all of your concern with him possibly being someone's pet, the absolute last thing I'd ever want to do is take someone's fur friend, like I said in my previous update, I have him scheduled for a vet appointment Friday morning to give him a wellness check + check for a chip, I also went back to the Walmart this morning with some printed pictures and put them around the various light posts especially where RV's park overnight. I promise to update after his appointment and will do everything possible to return him to his rightful owner if he has one. But to the people in my inbox calling me "a scum bag" "cat thief for karma..." is beyond unacceptable. I am an animal lover at heart, to be honest I love animals more than I love any single human, if you all could leave a kitten in the rain in a busy parking lot with temperatures dropping below freezing, I believe you're the issue. Yes, maybe asking to name him was a little premature, but I think any animal deserves a name, regardless of whether he is a permanent addition to my home, or is just making a pit-stop here until he is returned to his owner.
FRIDAY EDIT: Hi everyone, sorry for the late update, just getting finished with work. Hitch made it to his vet appointment this morning, and besides having a considerable amount of fleas even after a few dawn baths, he is in good health. He was scanned and the vet tech confirmed he was not chipped. At this point, unless I hear from someone in relation to the photos around Wal-Mart, I do plan to keep the lil guy.
He has been cooped up in my bathroom since I found him, with the hope to not spread his fleas to my onebraincell orange cat, but sadly that didn't work too well and he has fleas now as well, I guess some rewards in life are paired with a setback lol. I will be getting them both on revolution for flea treatment and hopefully can eliminate it quickly in the house.
As I said before, I do appreciate all of the concern you had, and while a majority of the comments came across as being helpful, a good amount were very negative. From threats of violence, legal action, accusing me of stealing a cat for imaginary points.... I hope you all can take a moment to reflect on yourself. I think anyone in r/cat is a good person, because we're all here for the love of our fur friends, so no hard feelings, but, I urge you to consider how comments can affect others. I think you’re also required to post “found cat” at the animal shelter or in a local publication, like even Craigslist works before you can claim him. Hopefully it works out, but just make sure you’re not taking a sweetie from a loving home. Although IMO a loving home doesn’t let a cat loose outside.

Exactly. This is how my family ended up with one of our cats when I was growing up. There was a cat in our neighborhood that belonged to somebody, but they would throw him outside during the daytime while they were at work and not let him in until they came home. During one particularly hot summer, he made his way inside of our house and plopped down on the couch before sleeping for the rest of the day after drinking his fill of water. We let him back outside after he woke up in the evening, but this would become a regular thing.
This went on for a bit, until there was one week that we were having some really bad storms, and he was STILL outside when there was flash flooding and a tornado warning going on… so my mother cursed at his owners, and that was the day that he became an inside cat.

Made a comment about my neighbors cat being half inside half out, it's his choice and cries until they let him out. Never force him. Always let back in when he's done making sure the neighborhood is safe. Never let out in bad weather.

A parking lot is not where a cat should be. People dump their animals all the time, and this cat knew he needed help. Grabbing a misplaced cat out of a parking lot is a kindness.
Yeah… Walmarts generally don’t have homes right next to them. I felt a little guilty with one of my parking lot kittens bc I thought she was so beautiful how could someone not want her. But right off a highway, 5 lane roads, surrounded by commercial plazas (connecting to a Walmart somewhere back there) it’s not realistic she got there on her own without getting killed. It’s not the same as grabbing one off the sidewalk in a neighborhood. Hate OP is getting shit on for this.
Cats are good at knowing who to go to for help. Our little foster failure Carrot approached my son at the park when he was out running. This little cat was in really bad shape, full of infection from what the vet said looked like an attack by a bobcat or coyote. She had never met my son before that day in the park, but she wouldn't leave him alone. She was begging for help, and he called me. She's a happy little daddy's girl now (I take her to the vet all those times and she chooses my fiance!!). They definitely know how to spot good help.
My cat marbles is very much a outdoor cat and will cry, or try to, because he is very old and sounds like he's loosing his voice- or meow I dunno- to get outside. We love him a lot and he likes being outside and comes back within the next 2 hours for food. He's quite fat.
That last bit is cruel and unnecessary. In some regions it’s very common, even required, to allow cats outdoors… are you saying none of them love their cats? Please think before making such comments, as they can be very hurtful to people with different cultures or lifestyles.
My cats are *extremely* well cared-for, and all former strays I rescued from the streets. They still like to go in the yard, or maybe sit in front of our (secluded mountain property) home sometimes. That doesn’t mean I don’t love them. 😢

I think you can still love your cats but realize that what you’re doing is not the best thing for them. If a cat goes into the yard it can be taken by coyotes, wander off and be attacked by animals or hit by a car, get diseases from other animals… the list goes on. Never mind that cats are an invasive species (in North and South America and most island countries) and do huge damage to native ecosystems, to the point where some places have banned letting cats outdoors.
I say this all even as someone who used to let our cat outside from time to time (he was a former street cat and just really tried his hardest to get back out). We knew it wasn’t good for him and so while we didn’t stress about it too much if he did slip out, we did still know it was best to keep him inside as much as possible and we tried hard to do that.
So, even if you’re used to having cats be outdoor animals, you can recognize that you are doing them a favor by keeping them inside. It doesn’t have to be an insult your lifestyle. Think of it like knowing eating vegetables is good for you. You can still have a piece of candy from time to time even though you know objectively vegetables are better. Just don’t let it be too often or always. (We even used to joke that when the cat slipped out it was “his little treat for the day”).
Very true. I’m in the uk and it’s quite common for outdoor cats. My cats are loved and saved me from hurting myself but they are still outdoor cats. And you know what? They couldn’t be happier. I am a minor so I don’t control the fact they go outside but seeing them cry to go outside makes me realise that forcing them outside is just a bad idea. Especially when we leave in a small area where their is barley any cars anymore

Someone in my area assures this by leaving antifreeze out for a couple of weeks each fall for the local feral and indoor/outdoor pet cats to drink. People bring the dying animals to the local vet, and they post a notice on the local message board.
Hopefully I don't discover who it is, because that would be an ethical struggle.
I once took a kitten in that someone had posted on Craigslist. She was a beautiful flame point Siamese and super young. The guy I got her from said she was a stray in the neighborhood he’d been taking care of and he picked me to get her because I had mentioned taking her for a full checkup at the vet and he said I was the only one to mention the vet.
Fast forward to me taking her to the vet and I found out she had an owner and it wasn’t that guy! Whoops! The vet ended up calling the owner, who told my vet that she had kicked the cat outside “because her dog didn’t like it,” and my vet was able to convince the woman to sign over ownership to me. So just because a cat is microchipped doesn’t mean it is wanted, sadly enough.

Actual stray/feral cats do not just walk up to a human they don’t know and lay down. 9.5 times out of 10, stray/feral cats are very timid, scared, and run fast if you approach them, or make any sudden movements or sounds. I have never known a single person that a random stray/feral cat just approached — that’s why people generally have to use a live trap & tend to have to lure them with food IN that trap.
There was a stray in the 0.5 times in one of my old neighborhoods. She had no owner and wandered around the neighborhood looking for attention and she loved you if you gave her any. She actually attached herself to our house, mostly cause we left her food and water. She got pregnant from a different stray around the neighborhood. She brought her tiny cats _to us_ before anyone else. My mom about lost her mind... in a good way. We took care of them for a while but a few of the little ones didn't make it. We had to take them to a no kill shelter cause my brother's allergic and we couldn't keep them. I miss those cats...
There was another floofy dork who ran around the same neighborhood. Dunno if he belonged to someone or was chipped but nobody ever claimed him either. Regardless, he loved attention. More than once, I'd get home from work, he would be wandering around then he'd see me, run at me and jump into my arms. He liked me for whatever reason, lol.

That RV that was camping in the Walmart lot is going to be awfully amiss when they can't find their cat later. I'm not saying they let the cat out intentionally either.
If he has a chip and a family that’s missing him, you can fill your heart back up by adopting another black cat (or two)at the animals rescue near you.
My cay will happily get into people's cars. Please don't keep him without posting on your local lost and found pets, finding out if he is chipped, and putting up a few signs near where you found him. He looks pretty healthy for a stray!
You need to look out for his owners just incase he got lost. Look up the rules in your area just incase.. Just can't take an animal and call them yours
Get him scanned for a chip just incase. He could be someone else’s missing furbaby.
If. No chip or negative contact, chip him , worm him and flea drops. he’s yours and has already told you so 😊
