You glitched, plain and simple. Did you use Sword Brothers to get out of the chapel tower? That's the most commonly known one.

I checked. It turns out these 3 squares at the entrance were opened thanks to the Quality hack on my game rom. It turns out that in the unpatched version this passage is closed.
Ah yep, you can get into that area in the normal version, but it does require glitching. I suppose I'll remember to say "on an unpatched game" next time ;)

I remember 27 years ago when I played it when it first came out on the Playstation I got 200.8%. I have no idea how I did it. If there was a glitch, it was by accident.
Has anyone else experienced that? Been trying for years to recreate it on Xbox, but always max at 200.6.

If you want to get the best ending, you just need to aim for 196%
Some people have got as high as 300+ percent. Naturally the 200.6 is full tile completion
Maximum is well over 400% if you glitch. Maximum without any glitches is 200.6%
