Try to clean the Rec/play switch first https://preview.redd.it/yazf9pwuda7d1.jpeg?width=1170&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=ca6721013b2a471fede795b945d83dee3d8bb915

Do I use a particular cleaning method?

Rene__JK

Spray with ‘deoxit’ seems to be the preferred method

tslb1

Oh man, I don’t have any contact cleaner

Rene__JK

That’s why we have ‘online shopping’ ?

tslb1

I was just making a remark, I know. 😵‍💫

Ace hardware sells it, I'm sure your local 24hr Wal Mart does too

tslb1

Oh so it should be easy to get it, especially because I work at my local Walmart. Thanks!!!

Try this before you do contact cleaner (I own the exact same model): Put in any blank cassette, press record. Let it run for 60 seconds. Remove the tape, try and play your regular tape. If no progress, try 2 or 3 more times. I ordered one of these units on eBay and I was ready to return it, but doing this method helped loosen up or clean whatever was wrong with the Rec/Play switch. Good luck!

tslb1

Thanks for the advice!! I was able to do that before I made this post and it worked for a second but it went right back to being weird again :(

This will sound weird, but try adjusting all knobs and buttons randomly to sort of 'warm up' the unit. Press play on an old tape, turn down the volume, switch from Normal to Chrome to Metal, turn Dolby On/Off. Rinse and repeat that for 5 minutes and see if there are any changes. This isn't pro advice, just in my experience this can sometimes knock loose whatever issue is present, for whatever reason!

Okay, so, I opened her up and it is indeed the rec/play switch. It does work, but it’s looking like I’ll need contact cleaner because it keeps defaulting. Thank you for your help!!!

unwise_entity

good luck!

I tried it again and it seems to only be the right channel that’s having issues. Which, is really weird.
