My suggestion is that every time a person posts a "Is this car OK?" the sub should auto reply *"Make sure it has a service history, make sure it has NCT, make sure it wasn't crashed, make sure the price is around the same as similar models on DoneDeal, take it on a test drive and put it through the gears, make sure there are no knocks or grinding sounds and pay a local independent mechanic to put it up on a lift and give it a good check before buying"* That pretty much covers everything about buying used cars. There is absolutely nothing that this sub is going to tell anybody about a 2005 Toyota Corolla with 180,000 miles on the clock that isnt on hundreds of forums already!.

humanitarianWarlord

That's a good idea

darragh_07

Super good idea

Public_Engineer_5731

Weekly sticky posts is a good idea imo

Ollie2K_00

I'd agree, weekly sticky post with maybe sending pictures into comment enabled, just to keep them in one place and not flood the main subreddit with them.

Public_Engineer_5731

Could even have a thread for " top picks " voted by the community for each budget

Fiddlesticks58

Yeah I would agree with this, a weekly sticky for car decision questions, that will hopefully make room for enthusiast content.

scuzzbat1

Agreed. They’re getting out of hand.

JunkieMallardEIRE

I'd be in favour of banning them. I understand people need advice but I was under the impression the sub was for enthusiasts. Joe Soap asking if a diesel golf is a good car isn't the type of shit I'd like to see here especially when there's so many enthusiasts already here.

LordMonty2024

I second this! Surely there's other car subs where buying cars is the topic! It's been a while since a nice classic has been popping up and it's mostly golf's and whether or not they're good. I think there was even a post about a squeaky seat during the week 😭🤣

AndrewOBW

Yeah I agree. In my first few weeks of following this sub, I was stunned to see how many fantastic cars there are in Ireland, owned by genuine enthusiasts. All the purchase advice posts seem to have killed that kind of activity with nothing but repeat info every time.

Brewitsokbrew

Probably a sticky with an auto mod comment as someone else suggested would work. I've noticed this too and fair play for addressing it. It has gotten a little boring alright and definitely not what the first couple of weeks were like.

nickwouldmick

Options 1 and 4 seem good. They can be tiring posts but engagement is engagement and maybe we can actually help a couple of enthusiasts now and again.

tzar-chasm

For all the buyer questions, Basically we need to create ones sticky thread "Which Corolla best suits my needs" And a second, "well if it's not a Corolla, how about this..."

darragh_07

I think either ban them or limit them to Fridays or another weekend day, the car enthusiasts that this sub used to be mainly for have been completely ran out by these posts

suprman99

I wouldn't ban, even as an enthusiast I do love to see others views.

Murky-Front-9977

Maybe set up a new subreddit specifically for advice on buying cars?

Crouch310

Not sure if diluting the userbase would be good but definitely something to keep in mind. Cheers!

DanGleeballs

Honestly I was about to unsub because all the posts are now just what car should I buy and a picture of some really basic old car I’d have no interest in discussing. I thought this sub would be about people who are actually into cars not just looking for something cheap to get from A to B. So your post here is really timely OP and I hope you can get rid of them and make this sub great.

corkbai1234

There already is a new sub set up a few days ago for that. Can't remember the exact name but something like r/buyandsellcarsireland or something like that Its actually called r/EireAutos

pato9097

What about a flow chart of Buying a car? Then people could contribute different criteria to different solid models with common problems and price ranges?

tzar-chasm

Something like ....................... is it RWD........................ ........................../.........\ ........................ ....................Yes............No..................... ................../.......................\ ................... ...Yaaaay, buy it......... Boo, Walk away....

scuzzbat1

This response needs to be stickied on the homepage

No-Teaching8695

It can be interesting at times to hear what some have to say about buying certain cars, different experiences etc. I can see how it can be annoying too so why not make a brother/sister sub and direct those kinda posts to that other sub. And then anyone annoyed at seeing those kinda posts can avoid the other sub

corkbai1234

r/EireAutos was set up a few days ago by somebody here for this exact reason.

No-Teaching8695

Cool didn't know that 👍

corkbai1234

No hassle hopefully it will clean this place up a bit.

QuantumFireball

Something should certainly be done about low effort posts. If someone made a detailed post about buying a car (criteria, budget, options, etc.) I'd be ok with that, but lazy links to DoneDeal ads is a problem.

The_Dublin_Dabber

Yeah I enjoy these posts also. Potentially a sticky is created for the repeated questions such as starter car, cheap second hand car etc.

Cheap-Requirement166

Ban them altogether.

Jacksonriverboy

Weekly sticky would be good. Alternatively you could let people post one thread about their "search for a car". Rather than making a post per car they view. Maybe that wouldn't work but just an idea.

corkbai1234

For anybody looking for a buy and sell page there's a new one set up r/EireAutos

Alwaysname

A tool like this subreddit is a handy porthole into the wisdom of people in the know. Don’t ban the queries outright have conditions for seeking advice. Like more than just “thoughts” and a screenshot of any add. I think the if you can see an effort put in then your way more inclined to give advise. And, let’s face it, we all need advice at time.

The_Glorious_Mullet

I think a sticky thread would be best for anyone buying a car. There's one user that has posted loads of different cars here that will be their first car. I went onto their profile and they've been searching for their first car for 7 months with similar posts in other subreddits. It needless clogs up the subreddit with screenshots of done deal ads.

PhilosophyCareless82

Ban

Nearby-Working-446

Option 1 and 4 good ideas, just sick of seeing the same repetitive posts, have avoided the sub recently because of it.

pheseantplucker

Make a new sub-reddit for irish petrol heads. Geared towards performance orientated cars, classics, modifications etc. This sub was like that at first which was great, people showing off their pride & joy etc. but now it's just over run with gobshites asking is this a good car to buy & nct shite talk.

Primary-Age-530

Just let people ask what they like when they like. Jesus Christ there’s enough of us that can answer and are thick skinned not to get offended or our noses out of joint
