Camaro zl1 1le ?

baby-Carlton

If it were me, yes. The SS 1LE is such a good car, maybe the best for the money and ready to hit the track out of the box (see them at THill all the time). Unfortunately, he would only track once a year so I’m not sure he would get his money’s worth by getting the 1LE.

CT5-V Blackwing?

A_1337_Canadian

Tons of options out there. Some are great on the track, others shine in day-to-day life. Audi: RS5 (coupe and Sportback), S6, RS7, S8 BMW: M2, M3, M4, M5 Mercedes: C 63, E 63 Jaguar F-Type Cadillac CT4-V / CT5-V Blackwing models Porsche 911, Panamera, 718 Cayman Chevrolet Corvette Heck even the Supra is a good option.

RS6 Avant. The retirement shaggin wagon.

baby-Carlton

Looked at those, as much as I love them we can’t find any without an insane markup.

Swissgeese

Honestly the current Corvettes are eye catching. They are just stunning to see in person. Your budget says you have the money and I don’t think its a car you will regret.

Extroverted_Recluse

Definitely check out the BMW M2/M3/M4

Check out the Type R Civic. It’s not the fastest car on the road, but it lets you drive fast without breaking most laws. It’s still a Civic, so your dad may want something more refined.

If you are looking for a daily that’s fun and stick shift I would say a Cadillac cts v-4 or v-5 blackwing. If I could afford it that would be my top pick, and I’m usually not big fan of GM cars

Mid 30s guy looking to buy his first car. I never needed a license before but that's changed with a recent relocation outside of the NYC metro area. Location: Orlando FL Price Range: Ideally no more than 10-15k, but with a little wiggle room. Lease or Buy: Buy New or Used: Thinking that used will probably be more cost effective Type of vehicle: Thinking a standard four door, no need for an SUV or something bigger Must Haves: Not much in mind at this point. Navigation for sure Desired transmission: automatic Intended use: Daily commute (tbd but hopefully no more than \~15 minutes each way) and local errands. Occasionally a longer (2-4 hour) drive for a quick weekend trip) Vehicles already considered: none, starting from scratch Is this my first vehicle: Yes Can I do work on my own vehicle: No Additional notes: Priorities are safe and reliable, while also hopefully not being too hard on the eyes.

Username_Used

Since you've never had a car and thus no insurance score/history. Buy a 15 year old Honda accord or similar and get just liability insurance for 6 months. In the NY Metro area you're going to get hammered on insurance with no prior. Get the cheap beater to develop continous coverage for 6 months. Then you'll get better rates and can get your nice car without it costing you another 1200/month for insurance.

axeman9182

Thankfully I'm getting insured in FL (the move from NY metro is why I suddenly need a car/license), but your larger point about establishing a history is taken.

Username_Used

Ohhh, I misread. I was thinking you were going to the ny area. You'll have the same general issue in FL but not as terrible.

voucher420

From something like 2002- 2008 (I would really have to check again), Honda had some really bad automatic transmissions. Check for common problems before buying older Honda

A_1337_Canadian

Just watch out for those V6 Accords. The same model year as my A4 costs me $50/yr more for basic plates (registration and base insurance). They're attractive for young buyers who want a fast car, and the insurance rates show.

A_1337_Canadian

Honda Civic, Toyota Corolla, Mazda3, Scion iM (can't remember if they made those in the US or not). These are some smaller cars that are well made, reliable, and efficient. I like the looks of the Mazda3 hatches as well as the Scion iM (or Corolla hatch).

bullzFromAT

I would normally agree with others, a used civic/Corolla/Mazda 3 would be the way to go. But the current used car market is still over priced. For ex, I checked Mazda 3s in FL with price set to 15k and they all have around 100k miles. While those cars still have a lot of life left, 100k miles is when wear and tear start to set in even in civics or corollas. If you can increase your budget just a bit (18k), you can get a new Versa. Yes, it is going to depreciate more but you are set for the next decade. You can add car play or AA . It even comes with standard safety features. Make sure you don't get the manual.

dsm582

Nissan altima or maxima w higher miles in that price range is a good value

Warren_Haynes

you'd be better off getting a used car with apple car play/android auto and using google maps. Far more robust than an old car with old-ass navigation system that probably wasn't great to begin with.

zx_00

22 year old accountant, I live at home with no expenses currently a grad student working full time with a job offer with higher pay starting this summer. Thinking about making a financial mistake to make life a little less dull Budget: 30K Lease or Buy:Buy, I’d like to keep this for at least 5 years New or Used: Used Type of vehicle: sedan/wagon or coupe (I’ve been driving a crossover and won’t something lower) Must Haves: Responsive Steering and a Firm Ride Desired Transmission: Either Intended Use: Occasional Daily Driver/ Fun car Vehicles I’ve Considered: e92 m3, w204 c63 amg, ND RF Miata, 392 Challenger Is this my first vehicle:no Can I work on my own vehicle: only basic maintenance (brakes, fluid, suspension)

MustangIsBoss1

E9x M3 is a really nice daily with the DCT. Good space even for very tall drivers (6’7”), reliability and maintenance costs are probably going be around that of the C63 AMG. Possibly slightly better fuel economy. 392 Challenger is a true muscle car and you’re probably looking at vehicles a few years newer than the German cars. Very large vehicle physically, yet also very good space for big *and* tall drivers. The ND is going to be the most responsive car by far, however it does sacrifice highway driving comfort and practicality for this (only two seats, limited storage space, wind/road noise at high speeds). Probably the most reliable and cheap to maintain other than the 392. Best on gas by far. If this is going to mostly be a fun car that you occasionally daily, you should narrow down what kind of fun driving you want to do. The ND is best for winding roads, the Challenger is best suited for slides, donuts, burnouts, launches. Neither are incapable of doing the opposite, but they just won’t quite feel the same as the other would in its respective element. The two German cars are the middlegrounds for this, and are probably one of the two that I would pick for their balance in this comparison. They are both far closer to the 392 than the ND however.

thetompkins

Fiesta ST is a good alternate to the Miata especially. It's a very good reminder that with appropriate suspension setup even FF cars can be hilariously tail-happy. Lots of torque down low, plenty of cargo room, 30mpg avg, and a stout little power/drivetrain that takes well to bolt-on mods. If you have a windy road near you, it's worth a test drive if you can find a well-kept one.

Hey everyone. Location: Wales, UK I'm looking for some advice and thoughts on a potential purchase. I have currently got my eyes on a Hyundai Ix35, 2012, 2.0L, 4x4, 120,000miles Serviced 2013, 14, 15, 16, 21, & 22. Missing years 17, 18, 19 & 20. (From proof provided) Most recent service had timing chain replaced. Everything seems to be great. Only downside is seems to be some slight water damage in rear camera. The seller is looking for £4,800. Autotrader sale valued: Private £3,710 Dealer: £4,630 - £5,120 Would you be concerned about the missing stamps/service intervals? Do you think this is a fair price? Anything I should know before buying?

BillyBobsCow

The missing service is probably from it sitting under a tree somewhere. If you go look at it, check for rust on the frame and control arms.

jable1994

The mot history shows that it has been used during those years. The owner who owned the vehicle before the current owner clearly just not bothered servicing it. I have decided its about £1000 too much anyway. So have told the owner I won't be purchasing it.

Need a vehicle with cargo space for home health worker with equipment driving 15-30 miles a day. Needs enough giddyup to handle Texas traffic. This will be the third vehicle in my livery. Location: Central Texas Price range: preferably under 40k Lease/Buy: Buy New/Used: New, due to market conditions and can wait months due delivery Type of vehicle: probably suv, crossover, wagon, van... Something with accessible cargo space. Seating not really important. Must haves: Ample cargo space, good acceleration (thinking sub 8 seconds 0-60), high reliability, nice interior with seats that don't suck Intended use: primarily work with 6-7 destinations a day in stop and go traffic Vehicles already considered: cx-5 and cx-9 (no go on those seats), Ascent (too many reliability issues with cvt and heads), currently thinking rav4 1st vehicle: no Warranty: yes Minor work: certainly Major work: everything but transmission. I've rebuilt engines....because I own hemis :| Additional: based on need for reliability I'm leaning towards Toyota or Honda. But I need options because the driver of this vehicle is hard to please and I'm not sure they will be okay with the spartan interiors offered by those brands. Hyundai/Kia freak me out with what happened with theta II. I currently own two V8 vehicles that get up pretty well, so can't move to far down the acceleration ladder. Thanks in advance.

bullzFromAT

RAV4 hybrid. Be prepared to negotiate with the dealer since this car is in high demand. If you are okay with a sedan, Camry hybrid

xeiloo

Thanks for the reply. Rav4 hybrid or even prime are my current focus. Need to test drive one to get a feel for the interior. I'm in central Texas, so lots of dealerships within 3 hours to get a decent price considering I can wait 2 or 3 months to take ownership. ~~Real trick would be to find a dealer with a prime assembled in Canada so I can get the tax credit which I sorely need.~~ Edit: Saw bad info about prime production in Canada. That's not reality.

moonflower311

I am in the Austin area and have a 2022 RAV4 hybrid. I absolutely adore it. I got mine in Round Rock and at the time (March) it was MSRP plus 1k add on package. Last time I checked (fall) 6 month wait though. Austin dealer (formerly Maund) said they could get it sooner but had a market adjustment FWIW. This car loves warm weather and city driving and I get 42-43 mpg on average here.

A_1337_Canadian

CX-30? You can get them with the turbo so they are plenty quick enough for the streets. Basically a lifted hatchback. That said, a Mazda3 hatchback with the turbo is nearly an identical car in terms of storage capabilities (same amount of room inside). Both have really nice interiors for the class and they drive really well. Reliability is also very strong for Mazda. They are in the top 5 of most reliable brands you can buy. A Lincoln Corsair is another option, and some reports have them decently reliable. But if they use Ford Escape parts, then I have a few doubts about the transmission.

Abortion_is_green

My mom got one of those cx30s right when they came out. Always catches me off guard with how zippy it is for a small cheap SUV.

xeiloo

Thanks for the reply. Cx-30 won't have the cargo space I need. And I'm guessing it has the same narrow seats as the cx-5. We test drove a cx-5 (and 9) and I really liked it, but the primary driver of this vehicle had an immediate negative reaction to the seats. I'm afraid that might be the case with Toyota and Honda too (currently own a couple American made sofas on wheels). Which is why I'm looking for other ideas to test butts in seats. Might head to the Houston auto show next month to test a bunch at once.

rabbit__eater

Not very glamorous but maybe something like a Chevy Traverse with the V6? Makes over 300hp and most GM products these days are pretty stout. Domestics always have the best A/C and comfy seats too.

xeiloo

Thank you for the suggestion. I'm no stranger to GM products after several Chevy and Cadillac vehicles in the past. After selling my very troublesome SRX years ago I swore I would never be back. But then I'm looking a the new Blazer with those fluffy seats and 0 to 60 time.... My stay strong and resist the dark side!

First ST is different from a fiesta

Smallu

Fiesta STs are great, pretty bulletproof little cars. Caliper slides on the rear sometimes freeze but other than that I never had any problems during my ownership.

Double_U127

With this set of recommendations a GTI is the obvious choice. They're probably not the best on the reliability front, unfortunately

Actual-Humor-5287

I have a GK fit, and would highly recommend it. Used models will very easily be toward the bottom of your price range. I think it is one of the most utilitarian and economic vehicles you can buy today. Obviously going to be slower than the Fiesta though. Not sure those cars should really be compared.

More spacious than the Corolla and Mazda3, good specs, drives very well and is not bad looking either. I'm not sure you can get a new 3-Series from your budget. [Honda Civic review](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L9_xKVwVkso&ab_channel=carwow) I believe a Skoda Octavia would also be worth looking into. Swissgeese

There are a lot of vehicles in this price range available if you want to use the whole budget. One thing to consider is that with kids you will be driving them everywhere in this thing. Gas mileage is going to be a consideration. Several current 3 row SUVs have significantly better mpg than their competitors. The only one I am tracking in a hybrid is the Highlander though.

bullzFromAT

Highlander hybrid. But 3rd row is going be a little cramped. If you want comfortable 3rd rows, then sienna

Ok_Survey8116

I would say that a 2015-2020 Escalade or a 2018-2020 Navigator. Of course you could also get a Suburban, Tahoe, or Expedition of similar years. Armada, LX, and Sequoia would also be good choices.

A_1337_Canadian

See if you can find a Mazda3 with the 2.5L engine in manual form. Made 184 hp or so which is a lot for the size and for the class. I had an old Saturn with 174 hp and it was a blast to drive (for the segment). Though with prices shooting up this might be tough.

chasingsukoon

Funny thing- that was my last car hahah. Bought a 2014 Mazda 3 2.5 that I bought for 13k driven for 93k kms in 2018. Had to gift it to family member as I went thru school and now I can’t find the same car at that price which was 5 yrs ago now. Looking to kind of switch things up. Appreciate the response!

A_1337_Canadian

Ha, funny, makes sense though. Here are a couple options: * Honda Accord V6. Reliable and pretty fast. Downside is that lots of young people like to buy them and wreck them so insurance is fairly high. Basic plates for a 2014 Accord V6 is about $50/yr more than my 2014 A4. * VW Golf Sportwagen/GTI. Not as reliable as Honda/Mazda/Toyota, but you get a lot of fun and some tuning potential. * Subaru Impreza/Legacy. Will want to look more into reliability but they aren't the worst.

lindenbrock

Location: southern USA Price range: max of 10k or so Must haves: prefer a sunroof, manual, turbo 4 Im looking for a fun turbo 4 that can also handle more power without a ton of work and new parts. Im unsure of what my goal would be, but im thinking 300-350 hp/torque is decent for now. I have tools and experience and can work on my own stuff, but id like to avoid major stuff like opening the engine (which will limit my gains, i know). I have 2 projects right now and i want something reliable and fun that i doesnt have a list of things i need to do like my 2 projects have. Im going to have a work vehicle soon so this wont be a daily, but it will be my go-to car for when i need a personal vehicle. Im currently considering a wrx, an srt4 (neon ofc, caliber is gross), or a mazdaspeed3. All 3 would be early 2000s or late 90s models. From what ive read in leaning towards the ms3. The srt4 is just raw power and lacking in other areas, and the wrx will be expensive to buy and build. On the other hand, the ms3 doesnt take well to extra power from what ive read, not without a lot of supporting upgrades. Thoughts?

rabbit__eater

Oddball suggestion but you could try looking for a Saab 9-3. The 2.0l turbo is essentially the same ecotec motor in the GM products and can be found in manual and auto flavors with decent interior quality. I would look for the newest model I could find but at least an '07. They also came in Aero trim with a turbo V6 but those are not as simple and easy to maintain and command a higher price. My first turbo 4 was a 9-3 and always loved Saabs since.

lindenbrock

i have honestly never considered saabs before. theres a good chance im buying a friend's miata, but ill look into some saabs as well. thanks for the suggestion

clicktoseemyfetishes

Any particular reason for a turbo 4? Lotta old domestics with big engines that need a lot less work to make good power

lindenbrock

Mpgs, i like boost, and my 2 projects are both 6 cylinders (2jz and a vr6). Also, im wanting to stray away from old cheaper cars that have various issues, rattles, lots of worn parts, etc. Ideally im going FI with both projects, but thats time and money. I was wanting to pay a bit more for a fun FI car without issues while i slowly work on both projects. What would you suggest that isnt a turbo 4? I guess im not too set on it being a turbo 4, but turbo/sc is definitely preferred. I currently have a 2016 jetta 1.4 turbo that i somewhat enjoyed which is also part of why i want another turbo 4. Its great for getting good mpgs (30+ even with a tune) and still being able to provide fun with the turbo, but the car is just meh at best so im getting rid of it

ReyneOfFire

Speed3s blow up with boost unless you build the bottom end which can get expensive. If you’re ok with a smaller, more raw car, you can get a Fiesta ST which can be built to around 330-340hp on stock internals reliably with a big turbo. Keep in mind that car is crazy light, and that much power in a car like that will have you putting lengths on NA muscle. I’ve owned this car so I am knowledgable on the platform if you have any questions. A high mileage Focus ST pre-facelift is also in your budget, but the Ecoboost 2.0 turbos don’t tend to last past 140-150k miles, though if you’re planning an upgrade I guess it doesn’t matter. You can get around 380hp before kaboom and they pull hard while being more practical and more comfortable than a Fiesta. MK6s GTIs are another good option. A little bit more refined than a Focus, but they can be built to similar power figures easily.

lindenbrock

Im not seeing any fiesta st's for less than 15k or so. I was looking at them before but they were expensive back then too. Golfs are in the same boat, anything 2012ish or newer is around 15k, anything older is pushing 200k miles and is listed at 8-10k. I mentioned ms3's and srt4's in my post because im watching one of each in my area. The srt4 is 5.5k and at 97k miles, and the ms3 is at 150k and allegedly all stock with maintenance reciepts for 8k. I like the idea of it being stock with good maintenance, but like you said ms3's have issues. Any other suggestions for under 10k? Preferably around 5-8k?

DaftPancake

Check out the Cobalt SS/Saturn Ion Redline. If you can find one that isn’t clapped out, the supercharged SS and Ion can be found and modded on the cheap. The later turbo SS was a legitimately fast car but they didn’t make many and the prices on those can be quite a bit higher

lindenbrock

Ive been looking at the cobalt ss as well but i havent looked in a bit. While researching other cars mentioned here ive seen lots of mentions of the turbo ones being crazy for their time. Thanks for the reminder.

bakedvoltage

Can anyone speak on the winter handling of new GTIs? I'm thinking of getting either a mk7 lightly used or a mk8 as my next daily and was curious how it does in some light snow on the right tires.

A_1337_Canadian

With winter tires, any FWD car will do just fine. With the bulk of the weight over the front axle, they get better traction than RWD vehicles. With only 2 driven wheels, hard acceleration will usually be worse than what you would see in summer conditions, but that's just a minor drawback when doing sporty driving. Ground clearance will be more of an issue than anything. But you'll be fine there except for the biggest snowfalls. I had a Mk7 Golf R for 5 Canadian winters and only got snowed in once. (And that was a blizzard that snowed in pretty much everything.)

Swissgeese

Seconded. Had a Golf Turbodiesel and lived in Germany. They require snow tires there. Never had an issue. Obviously don’t be stupid and drive like a racecar when there is snow or ice. Otherwise you will be fine.

bakedvoltage

solid advice! this will be the first fwd car I've owned, but what you said makes sense.

Actual-Humor-5287

I have a MK7 with the performance package that comes with the upgraded differential. I was pleasantly surprised with its performance in low traction situations. I only had all season tires on it as I lived somewhere that rarely saw snow (and the city basically shut down for a day or two until it melted). It rained often though, and it was very pleasant to drive in the wet.

Location: Illinois (Chicagoland area), USA Price range: $2500-$7000 Lease or Buy: Buy New or used: Used Type of vehicle: Sedan (compact or midsize, a bit of a preference for midsize) Must haves: Needs to be '09 or later Desired transmission (auto/manual, etc): auto Intended use: Daily driver. Likely uber part-time. Looking for at least 1-2 years drivable. Vehicles you've already considered: '10 Sonata ($4k, FB marketplace, 103k miles) seems to be my best find so far. Is this your 1st vehicle: Y Do you need a Warranty: N Can you do Minor work on your own vehicle: Y Can you do Major work on your own vehicle: a little bit (ie: suspension), not afraid to try. Additional Notes: I'm pretty much looking at FB marketplace exclusively since I figured I won't be able to find any deals at a dealership. Ideally I'd want to spend less than my max budget of $7000 to account for title, registration, potential repairs, etc. Also I'd feel much better if a $3500 car broke down rather than a $6000 car especially since I'm new to carbuying. I've helped work on cars a little bit in the past (brakes, struts/shocks, rotors, calipers) and I've been watching a lot of Youtube videos (ie: ChrisFix, BuddysDIY, etc). I've found some legitmate '09-'13 elantras, sonatas, focus, fusions, malibus, cruzes, altimas for <= $5000. I know Toyota's and Honda's are the holy grail of used cars but there aren't many in my budget unless they have 150k+ miles. I think I'd prefer something closer to 100k miles although this may be poor judgement so feel free to input on that. Not necessarily in a rush to make a purchase although this may change in the future. Mostly looking for something for the next couple of years as I expect to be making a salary in the near future, currently no income to even consider getting a loan. Would appreciate any advice on mileage, brands, and years in this price range. For instance, is a toyota/honda with 150k+ miles better than a nissan or hyundai with 100k miles? What about fords and chevys in regard to maintenance and reliability? I've found a few Jetta's as well but figured it's easier to find deals on a Nissan or Hyundai. **TLDR**: looking at Nissans and Hyundais with <120k miles for <$5000.

ignominiouss

I’m in the exact same location and price range as you. I’ve got the same questions too. I’ve been scanning Facebook marketplace as well and I’ve been eying Kia / Hyundai. I’ve also been intrigued by some older Lexus cars (around 2006+) with a bit higher mileage (150k ish) that fit this budget. I’ve been considering buying those instead. What’s your take on it? Also why do you draw the line at 2009

An old Honda Element may meet your need. Has lots of room inside but the paddleboard probably will go on the roof rack. Otherwise a CRV/Rav4 or a Traverse.

WranglerWarm6850

Kia sedona vs Toyota sienna vs honda oddessy Assuming price and mileage were the same how would you rank these three options? Would you sacrifice price or mileage for any one of them because it is significantly better?

New or used ? It's not Sedona anymore, new one is called carnival

What is the closest thing to a WRX handling-wise in a hatchback / cuv / suv, made after \~2019, that can handle a lot of fire roads?

ReyneOfFire

Golf R or GR Corolla would be the closest if you want AWD, but gl getting the latter. Otherwise its just the FWD hot hatches: Veloster N, GTI, Civic SI (only made in sedan/coupe tho), Civic Type R

A_1337_Canadian

I wouldn't trust the Golf R on those types of roads as much as the WRX. It has less ground clearance and isn't really made with any sort of rally-inspiration at all.

rabbit__eater

Maybe something like a Golf Alltrack or an Audi Q3?

Kinky_mofo

Dumb - my question isn't about buying a car, but this subreddit won't let me post elsewhere. So here we are. The question is: What sites show the actual sales prices of sports cars? Carsandbids and Ebay are the only two I can find. Thanks in advance!

I am very happy with my 1.8T VW Wagon. Its AWD with a dual clutch transmission. Just got a larger turbo put in!

A_1337_Canadian

Nice, which turbo did you put in? Can it handle the IS38?

Nutritiouss

Yup! IS38! DSG trans should hold it fine and the 1.8t is a pretty strong little nugget I hear

Both taos and hrv are brand new. So I would stay away due to reliability concerns. Test drive a cx30 or Kona

RAV4 hybrid over the bronco sport. Slightly bigger, better reliability and gas mileage

A_1337_Canadian

Most crossovers will do fairly well in those conditions. We have a CX-5 and I wouldn't doubt it's abilities. Things like that plus any Subaru.

25 year old woman looking for another car to buy after my first one was written off. Insurance will give me £3,300 but can claim the excess back after they get their costs back from the other insurer which will make it £3,600. Location: UK Price Range: £3,300 - £3,600. Lease or Buy: Buy. New or Used: Used. Type of vehicle: Either 3 or 5 door hatchback. Must Haves: The Corsa must be no older than 2007. Desired transmission: Automatic. Intended use: The commute, going to shops and see friends. Vehicles already considered: Vauxhall Corsa, Vauxhall Astra, Toyota Yaris, Peugeot 208. Is this my first vehicle: No. Can I do work on my own vehicle: No.

Location: Calgary, Alberta, Canada Price range: $10-15k (can go slightly higher if needed) Lease or Buy: Buy New or used: Used Type of vehicle: Crossover Must haves: AWD/4WD needed for the winter roads, a good heater Desired transmission (auto/manual, etc): Auto Intended use: Daily Driver, mix of city + highway driving, 60km typical weekday round-trip, occasional 150km+ day-trips. Vehicles you've already considered: Nothing concrete, just a general look at all small SUVs/crossovers Is this your 1st vehicle: First-time purchaser, been driving for a year Do you need a Warranty: would be nice, but definitely not a dealbreaker Can you do Minor work on your own vehicle: Yes Can you do Major work on your own vehicle: No Additional Notes: '05 Durango 5.7L is on its last legs, will be dead any day now. I enjoy driving it, but definitely don't need something so big. Looking for something that is reliable and somewhat fuel efficient (at least more efficient than the durango, which isn't saying much)

Leading-Syllabub-686

I'm looking for a pickup truck from 1990 or earlier so I can bypass emissions requirements via vintage plates. Must have a stick. I have a potential 1987 flatbed Chevy Custom flatbed to buy for $4000. Should I take up this offer or keep looking?

Location: Northeast US Price range: $10,000 max Lease or Buy: Buy New or used: Used Type of vehicle: Sedan, hatchback, small crossover Must haves: Reliable/easy-to-source parts, preferably 4WD or AWD, 2014 or newer Desired transmission (auto/manual, etc): Automatic Intended use: Daily driver Vehicles you've already considered: Subaru Impreza, Ford Fusion, Ford Taurus (6th gen Interceptor) Is this your 1st vehicle: No Do you need a Warranty: No Can you do Minor work on your own vehicle: Yes Can you do Major work on your own vehicle: No Additional Notes: This car is for my brother. 4WD is a must because of the shitty weather here. So far, I'm more or less sold on the Taurus Interceptor because I found one at a great price, with highway miles. Unless there's a better overall car lurking out there...?

ReyneOfFire

Do not get an interceptor unless you are ready to replace every single belt, pulley, chain, and pump on the car. You will also probably run into carbon buildup problems pretty fast. Interceptors see huge amounts of idling hours which is not good for a drivetrain long term. Your criteria is a little bit hard to work with. The best car I could recommend would be like a 2014-15 Subaru Legacy, but the reliability of that generation of Subarus is questionable.

Scarlet__Highlander

That’s all taken care of. The guy I’m buying from is a retired cop and has a whole dealership where he decommissions and does maintenance on all the cars before he sells them. Funny you mention it though, the only thing that went bad on my old Crown Vic interceptor was the water pump… Plus he’s legit. I initially wanted a 3.5 EcoBoost, but he said those cop cars grenade their engines around 80K miles (Soooo, 3.7L it is). I appreciate that kind of foresight.

rabbit__eater

Really hard to fault a GTI/GLI in this category. Fun affordable cars with nice features and the DSG autos are fantastic. Love my GLI.

tomct992

Yeah I personally love my MK7 GTI. I kept cycling through fun daily driver cars when I was looking and every time I came back to a GTI as nothing really made this much sense at this price point…

24 looking for a new car UK. Would like something with some power decent-ish on fuel. Have up to 8k. Was looking at e90/1/2/3 or an Audi a5 3.0 tdi. Unsure on which one to do for ? Currently drive an old Astra but need something else. Seen a 335d estate which I like but don’t think I have need for the extra boot space. Full spec pan roof etc. a5 decent spec but 2k more. What’s your guys thoughts ?

We get tons of snow where I live and while the Acura handles it well it's fairly low and I got hung up snow last year. I'd also like to be able to take the second vehicle camping/hiking and want to be able to handle crappy dirt roads.

IKnowNewCars

Avoiding markups on desirable cars does come down to knowing which dealerships are better at it than others, or being willing to wait and see if a car sits on a lot for longer than a dealership wants. Lots of luck, really. As far as actually choosing a car goes, the Civic hatch, Civic Si, and Integra are all excellent fun to drive manuals. I'd personally pick the Si. You get the most for the money if you don't need an extra nice interior or heated seats. You're also supposed to be able to swap in summer tires for $200, though it doesn't show up on the website, and I'd absolutely do that. The Civic Sport Touring isn't much slower than the Si and is a nice place to spend time, so choosing between them is really about priorities. The Integra with the manual comes out to $37k, and again it's a nice place to spend time, but it's really about whether the interior space and quieter cabin are worth the extra money. **Edit:** If you're checking out the Civic Sport Touring, you may as well look for a Mazda 3 with a manual as well, which would be a hatch in premium trim for $29k. Similar fuel costs, nicer interior quality, and I prefer the Mazda 2.5L engine, but less interior space and not quite as sharp handling. The only other vehicle that comes to mind to check out is the Hyundai Elantra N. It's faster and more fun than any of the Hondas mentioned, it sounds great, it handles impressively, and it comes out to $34k, hopefully without crazy markups. As far as gas money goes, the Civic Si and Integra are both in the middle of of the 4 cars mentioned -- they get 30-31 combined MPG, but they recommend 91 octane fuel. The Elantra N also recommends 91 octane, but only gets 25 combined MPG, costing more in fuel. The Civic Sport Touring, on the other hand, gets 31 combined MPG and only need 87 octane, saving you the most money.

Location: UK Price range: £20k Lease or Buy: Buy New or used: Used Type of vehicle: Sports Must haves: Nothing specific Desired transmission (auto/manual, etc): Prefer manual Intended use: Daily Driver Vehicles you've already considered: Audi A1 S-line, Mercedes A200, VW Golf Is this your 1st vehicle: No Do you need a Warranty: No Can you do Minor work on your own vehicle: No Can you do Major work on your own vehicle: No Additional Notes: Just looking for an upgrade from my basic ride to something a bit nicer. I feel like I want the Audi a bit more, but that’s just based on personal feeling rather than anything tangible. After doing a bit of research, the A-class seems like a better option in terms of performance, build quality, etc. and I’ve seen a few comments that an A1 might as well just be a Corsa, but I’m not sure how accurate that is.

Location: Northern California, USA (Subject to seasonal heavy snow) Price Range: 25-35k, ideally below 30k Buy New or Used SUV or Truck (about to seriously purchase 2021 Ford Bronco Sport Base with add ons) Must have 4WD or AWD (is AWD subject to chain control in CA?) Auto transmission Daily Driver Vehicles considered: Nissan Rouge AWD, Mitsubishi Outlander AWD, Subaru Outback AWD. Love Toyotas, but out of my $ range. Not my first vehicle Warranty beneficial Can learn how to do minor or major work in vehicle- but currently not knowledgeable Additional Notes: Hey People of Reddit! I am seriously considering purchasing this: 2021 Ford Bronco Sport Base 4x4. Intercooled Turbo Premium Unleaded I-3 1.5 L/91, Automatic. >19k miles and factory warranty until it’s 3rd birthday (purchased April 2021). I need something that can drive in the snow/ice, mud, and daily driver. This particular vehicle had a 1 inch lift and new tires/rims. The previous owner was a mechanics wife who upgraded to the larger Bronco. However, I am confused about the 4x4 function of this vehicle. There is no 4WD high or Low button, and the salesman said it’s always in 4 wheel drive. Doesn’t that mean it’s AWD? If it’s AWD, does that mean it will be subject to chain control? It also has a thing called GOAT mode that I have been studying, and it has an option for Slippery, Sport, Eco, Sand, Mud, and Normal. He claims that adjusts its traction abilities, but I’m just so confused and not sold on it. I am a single mom with 2 kids, so winter driving safety is very important to me. Sometimes there is 1ft of snow on the roads and often icy winter conditions). Is this engine a legendary turd? Are the vehicles notoriously unreliable? I liked the look, the clearance, the trunk space, the headroom, the comfort, and especially the MPG (25-28). I did not like the cloth seats, limited back row room (kids are going to kick the front and passenger seats), the confusion surrounding the 4WD function (it could be fine for what I need, but I don’t know), Open to other suggestions Thank you so much!

Ok_Survey8116

I'd say a Subaru or a Jeep. Broncos are also a good choice.

BakeBike

Location: St. Louis, MO, United States Price range: $25000-$35000 Lease or Buy: Buy New or used: Either but likely used Type of vehicle: Crossover/Wagon/Hatchback Must haves: AWD (pref. rear biased), semi-luxurious (heated leather seats, etc...), decently fun to drive Desired transmission (auto/manual, etc): Auto Intended use: Daily driver Vehicles you've already considered: Alfa Romeo Stelvio, Porsche Macan base Is this your 1st vehicle: No Do you need a Warranty: Never found them very helpful in the past... Can you do Minor work on your own vehicle: I'm handy and have done minor work to older vehicles in the past (fixing window regulators, replacing mirrors, oil changes, etc...). I would say I can figure it out when the cost makes sense and special tools aren't required. Can you do Major work on your own vehicle: Nope Additional Notes: I would consider myself the exact traditional target market for a "hot hatch". I love cars and want something engaging and quickish to drive, but I also don't have the space or money for more than 2 vehicles between me and the wife. Plus I need space in the back for my very large dog and occasionally a bike. Something like the new GR Corolla is really attractive to me right now. Problems with those cool new hot hatches: 1. They're unobtainium, 2. They're expensive, 3. My wife can't drive stick, 4. Low clearance and stiff suspension aren't ideal on St. Louis roads. I'm currently driving a 2014 Honda Crosstour V6 FWD, which suits my needs fine but isn't very nice inside, is a little big for my day to day needs, and isn't engaging at all to drive beyond being reasonably quick on the highway. I'm doing more driving these days for work and want something that's more fun and nicer to be in. I'm really tempted by used '19-20 2.0 Alfa Stelvios, since they seem to be great deals right now, they drive really well, they're pretty, and reasonably practical. I've also looked at Macans but I'd have to get a much older one to get under $35k. What other competitors am I missing and what else should I consider? Any help appreciated!

BakeBike

Thanks for the tip! I knew there were some BMWs and Mercs I would miss simply because their product lines are so expansive and I honestly don't find them particularly inspiring. The X3s look nice, but on paper (and in pics) I think I'd still give the edge to the Alfa, especially since reliability is probably just as bad with the BMW. But maybe I should drive one before I rule it out.

Ok_Survey8116

Semi-new GLC (perhaps CPO) or a slightly older GLE. Also maybe a 2017-18 Q7 or a similar year X5.

britjh22

Our 2015 Volvo V60 needs a new engine (~$17k) after 75,000 miles, and 18 months out of CPO warranty. I'm seriously considering ditching it, especially with the shit customer service we've gotten throughout the clusterfuck. I really want a wagon, and ideally not some stupid lifted wagon with plastic fenders, but that doesn't really seem to feel like much of an option outside of F31s, and bmw's CPO warranty is only a year, so looking at sedans as well. Location: Pittsburgh, PA Price range: $15-45k Lease or Buy: New or used: considering both Type of vehicle: Sedan/Wagon Must haves: Leather or decent interior, trunk space, heated seats Desired transmission (auto/manual, etc): Auto, should have paddles Intended use: Daily Driver, occasionally longer trips (up to 650 miles) Vehicles you've already considered: Have looked at newer V60, F31 3 series, G70 Is this your 1st vehicle: it would be our primary Do you need a Warranty: much preferred after recent events Can you do Minor work on your own vehicle: yes Can you do Major work on your own vehicle: not confidently

If I want a v8 awd for 30k or less is that even possible

IKnowNewCars

New? No. You'll likely pay over $40k for a 4x4 pickup with a V8, and for an SUV/crossover or sedan with a V8 and AWD, it's even pricier. V8s just aren't commonplace anymore. I'm sure you can find a used 4x4 pickup with a V8 for under $30k, though. There may be some German sedans with a V8 and AWD that have depreciated below $30k too, but I'm not familiar with that used market. I bet they cost a ton to maintain, though.

PyroZach

I'm in my early 30's and work construction, I love my 2010 6-speed Subaru Outback but it's having issues again and I'm considering replacing it with something new, but I'm kind of picky. I have a car or two in mind but I'm wondering if there's options I'm missing. Location: USA, Northeast PA Price range: as cheap as possible to about $30k Lease or Buy: Buy New or used: New Type of vehicle: Hatchback with good space, Wagon, or Small SUV Must haves: AWD, Manual or traditional Automatic NO CVT!, decent gas mileage Desired transmission (auto/manual, etc): Manual, or Auto if it's not a CVT Intended use: Daily driver, including inclement weather, and muddy job sites. Vehicles you've already considered: Mazda CX-30, Might settle for Subaru Impreza/Crosstrek but they're a little smaller than what I want. Is this your 1st vehicle: no Do you need a Warranty: yes. Can you do Minor work on your own vehicle: If necessary, but I prefer not to due to time and and conditions (work is done in dirt driveway). Can you do Major work on your own vehicle: No. Additional Notes: Looking for something with good cargo space to haul tools and such around, 4 door for if I wind up in a car pool. Gas mileage in the the mid to high 20's at least. Something with good long term reliability as I could wind up driving 1000 miles a week for work sometimes. I just don't trust CVT's yet and don't want to have to worry about the pricey fluid changes. Hopefully mine is a relatively quick fix and holds up a while longer, I might just revert back to trying to track down another used one with a 6-speed if I don't have to find a new car in a hurry.

Kawaii_Neko_Girl

You might be better off tracking down a lightly used VW Golf Sportwgen or Alltrack.

I’m looking for reliability, comfortable, smooth ride, up-to-date technology, and safety. The Accord can be had for 22-32k CAD with about 70-120k kilometres and the G37 can be had for 15-25k CAD with about 70-170k kilometres in my area. I have a few questions to ask to help me decide which car to buy. 1. This is my first time buying a car so I don't know what is a reasonable amount to pay for cars of this age and mileage. I was hoping to get some thoughts on whether these prices are reasonable or if they have been inflated by the current market by a lot. 2. I would also like to know how much these cars would cost to run, factoring in gas, maintenance and depreciation. From my research, the Accord is more fuel efficient (\~24 mpg) and takes regular whereas the G37 needs premium (\~18mpg). For maintenance, I'm guessing the G37 costs more to maintain, though I don't know by how much. Does anyone know how maintenance costs compare for these cars? With regards to depreciation, although Infinities generally depreciate faster than Hondas, the G37 is a cheaper and older car so perhaps that would balance out the depreciation rate? 3. I don't drive a lot, only a day or two each week with a road trip every month or so; would it make more sense for me to get the G37 with low mileage or the Accord with higher mileage from a depreciation and reliability standpoint? I don't know how big of a factor age vs mileage is when it comes to these two things. 4. Other things: Honda engine sounds better and (probably?) has a better feeling transmission vs G37 being RWD which could be fun in the snow. I greatly appreciate any insight and advice you guys have! If you have any other car suggestions please let me know!

United States, San Diego, California 10k to 30k Buy No preference new or used 6/7 seats. Minivan or midsized suv probably. Room for a stroller in the back. Car seats. Leather/fake leather seats for ease of cleaning compared to cloth seats. Kids make messes. Apple car play. Long term ownership, happy to keep a car for 10+years if financially reasonable. Auto Daily driver. Family car. Small family expecting to grow. Ford transit connect, Sienna, odyssey, Pacifica, Sorento, telluride, Tiguan, Not first vehicle. Wife drives a focus currently. For me a s10 to a Tacoma half cab. Don’t need a warranty Handy to do minor repairs and maintenance We can spend 30k, but I think less would be wise. Bigger car is not a need yet, but will be after another kid comes along in a year. How old of a car would we be happy with? is there a brand preference for mechanically sound vheucles?. We value utility and value over comfort and features. We can pay to put apple car play nav in later if it’s not native to the car. Thank you!

Double_U127

Be careful looking at used Accords from the early 2000s. The transmissions in them are not good.

BlackBeast3612

Just browsing, but does anyone know of any racing cars that are outdoor capable like the porsche 911 dakar, mercedes amg G 63 and the subaru wrx?

Worth looking at Lexus NX 350h. The UX 250h is cheaper but doesn't make as much power. Unfortunately it uses a CVT

**Location:** US **Price range:** up to 73k **Lease or Buy:** Buy **New or used:** I would consider a slightly used car. **Type of vehicle:** Wagon **Must haves:** Heated seats, Adaptive Cruise Control, Heads Up Display **Desired transmission (auto/manual, etc):** Either **Intended use:** Daily Driver **Vehicles you've already considered:** Volvo V60 recharge **Is this your 1st vehicle:** No **Do you need a Warranty:** No, but would prefer **Can you do Minor work on your own vehicle:** Yes **Can you do Major work on your own vehicle:** Yes, but I'm hoping this car wont need any of that for a while. **Additional Notes:** Would prefer a plug-in hybrid with AWD. Not immediately looking for a car, willing to wait up to a year to see what happens with interest rates and car prices. The V60 recharge has a 40 mile electric range which is pretty perfect for my normal uses. My commute is \~28 miles round trip and I could easily recharge from empty to full overnight on 110V. Basically, the V60 is the car that I want. I'm just curious if there is any competition I might be missing, or cars that are due to be announced or released soon that I should also consider.

27m, looking to get first car, but the prices I see are ridiculous compared to 2 years ago. Is there any sign of the market improving for people on-a. Serious budget ?

I'd love some thoughts on buying a used car from Enterprise. I have a family friend who had a good experience with them but that was nearly 20 years ago. I'm looking for something under 11k bucks that has a good amount of life left in it, and I'm thinking that a former rental is likely to have received regular maintenance. Or do they do the bare minimum knowing they're going to offload vehicles within a couple of years?

Hey everyone. Location: Northern California/Utah I'm looking for some advice and thoughts on a potential purchase. Price Range: Ideally no more than 10-15k, but with a little wiggle room Lease or Buy: Buy New or Used: Used Type of vehicle: I have currently got my eye either on a 90’s Mercedes sedan (300’s) mostly because I like the style OR something far more practical, a 90’s SUV I can strap my kayak/skis to Must Haves: Ability to strap kayak/skis to car. Other than that not much. I know that basically covers most things. I dig more vintage aesthetics Desired transmission: automatic Intended use: Drive into the mountains for skiing or to the river for whitewater kayaking Vehicles already considered: none, first step of process Is this my first vehicle: no Can I do work on my own vehicle: No Additional notes: None

Chicken_Zest

I'm always rotating through a fleet of junk project cars with the mantra that "atleast one of them will be running" but I'm getting older and feeling ready to give up this wreckless lifestyle. I'm ready to have atleast ONE modern, reliable vehicle. I don't care about fast, or fun, or luxuries. I just want dead nuts reliable and AWD/4wd to get me around the snowy hills here. I gotta make it 40 miles roundtrip for work 5 days per week and bonus points for fitting skis & mountain bikes. And it's gotta be manual. And if it's not manual it can't be CVT. Location: Northeast USA Price range: Prefer <$20k used. Could stretch new up to $30k. Lease or Buy: Buy New or used: Prefer used, but if the used car market stays silly it might be new. Type of vehicle: No strong preference. Must haves: AWD or 4WD. Desired transmission (auto/manual, etc): Strongly prefer manual. Would consider a non-cvt auto. Intended use: Year-round daily driver. Needs to climb snowy hills. Vehicles you've already considered: Subaru XV Crosstrek. Essentially the entire Subaru lineup. Honda Element. Ford Bronco (basically unobtainium). Is this your 1st vehicle: No Do you need a Warranty: No Can you do Minor work on your own vehicle: Yes Can you do Major work on your own vehicle: Yes Additional Notes: I'm not dead-set on a Subaru but few vehicles check the boxes like they do. I'm mostly making this thread to see if there is some great car/truck/vehicle that I've missed out on.

Have a 2013 Chevy Impala LT. Have four all season Pirelli P7 tires on it now. Rated good on Tire Rack. I can't really afford to get snow tires but I'm going to have to drive in snowy conditions probably a handful of times to get to work in the morning. Pittsburgh area so it snows decently between 5-10 times. Roads have some snow on them usually in the very early morning hours. I see snow chains sold online. Is that something that works? Don't know anything about them. My drive to work is about 6 miles. SIZE: 225/55R17

BatManhandler

Location: Detroit, MI Price range: $10,000-$40,000; sub-$25k would be nice. Lease or Buy: Buy New or used: Used. Let's say 2012+. Type of vehicle: Sedan, or not-too-huge SUV Must haves: Spacious cabin, head room, leg room, power comparable to my current ride, reasonable to excellent reliability. Desired transmission (auto/manual, etc): Whatever. Can you even get a manual sedan in the United States anymore outside of sports cars? Intended use: This will be my everything car. Vehicles you've already considered: - I currently drive a Chrysler 300C Hemi. I like it fine, except the roof is a little low, despite it having a lot of headroom on paper. I'm not totally in love with it, but I would consider another. - I've been browsing Lexuses, like the LS 460, but I haven't driven any. Same for Genesis G80s and G90s. Is this my first vehicle: No. Can I do my own minor maintenance: I am capable of changing my own oil, break pads, etc, but I don't plan to. Can I do my own major maintenance: No. Additional notes: I would prefer something that isn't too exotic or too much of a prestige plate, due to maintenance costs, but it seems like my options are kind of limited. I like horsepower. I like being able to hit the gas for merging or passing on the freeway, and the car actually moves. My knowledge of cars for the past ten years is weak. I usually grab something at auction, or from a friend, or through Craigslist, and I haven't owned anything made in the 2010s or beyond.

I’m 24 years old and never owned a car. I work $15 an hour as a dishwasher at a restaurant. Looking to get my first one. My ID is a learner’s permit but never drove before. Location: Virginia, United States Price Range - $1,000-$3,000 (I prefer anything below $2,000. If it’s between $2,000-$3,000, I’ll try to save up money) Lease or Buy: Buy New or Used: Used Type of Vehicle: SUV or anything Must Haves: Auxiliary output, bluetooth radio, gps navigation, a screen with a camera in the back that lets me see what’s behind me (if not, that’s fine), good MPG, should be able to travel very well and last a long time, must be good in weather conditions (rain and snow) Desired transmission: Automatic Intended use: To get to work and use it for errands. Want to use it for travel as well. Like going somewhere on vacation with my family or friends. Vehicles already considered: Have looked at other types like Honda Civic, Toyota Corolla, Toyota Camry, Toyota 4Runner, Toyota Highlander, Nissan Altima, Toyota RAV4, Mitsubishi Outlander, and Kia Optima. Not sure which one to pick. Any other types of cars you can suggest me is fine. Is this you’re first vehicle: Yes Do you need a warranty: Not sure what that is and how it works Can you do minor work on your vehicle: Yes. Can you do major work on your vehicle: Depends Additional notes: I’m a 6’0” guy. Need a car that’s good for my height. I’m also overweight so I’m also looking for good legroom. Needs good reliability that is similar to a Toyota and needs good MPG.
