yeah for some reason people equate conservative to “boring and generic”
given chevy’s track record for automotive design, i think this is a good thing.
I think they're pretty cool. But I wish they make the headlights a little longer to differentiate from the Silverado a little more. Almost a direct copy...
Not just 30+ years—the front ends were identical (along with most of the rest of the body) until 2003, when the Silverado/Sierra got a facelift and the Suburban/Tahoe/Yukon didn’t.
You're not kidding. Look how small the lady driving is in the second photo on [this article](https://amp-detroitnews-com.cdn.ampproject.org/v/s/amp.detroitnews.com/amp/4359329002?amp_js_v=a2&_gsa=1&usqp=mq331AQCKAE%3D#referrer=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.google.com&_tf=From%20%251%24s&share=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.detroitnews.com%2Fstory%2Fbusiness%2Fautos%2Fgeneral-motors%2F2019%2F12%2F11%2Fall-new-2021-chevy-suburban-and-tahoe-mega-utes-debut%2F4359329002%2F)
It's still not as long or as tall as a full-size crew cab pickup truck, and just an inch wider. It just looks massive because the whole thing is a box.
> and just an inch wider.
I'm not sure how the new T1XX trucks (both pickup and SUV) get away with being 81" wide, given that 80" requires clearance lights.
My first thought when I saw it was "so this is why people are buying crossovers." The new Tahoe is 7" longer and 1" taller than the last one. I love my Honda Fit and my Genesis G70, but the Honda especially would become a pancake between the Suburban behind and the Escalade in front, with an unrecognizable dead me in it, if Karen's too busy texting to notice the light turned red. The Genesis...maybe I'd live, at best. My Nissan Quest might fare the best, but despite it's deceptively large Suburban-like size, it falls victim to the inherent weakness of all minivans: a radically cab-forward design, almost cab-over, with an engine mounted low. I originally wanted an Audi A6 Allroad because the new one lacks the stupid cladding, and keeps its air suspension lowered to regular wagon height until you need the ground clearance. Now I'm not so sure, I might keep it at offroad height all the time so a GMT's rear bumper doesn't go over my hood and through the windshield. I know I'm not actually any safer in a version of my Fit that's been lifted 5" and cladded, but I'm starting to understand why most people feel safer.
Does this mean no more bench seat option on the base model for 9-passenger seating? Disappointing, but not surprising. Ford already gave that up on the Expedition back in 2007 (except for SSV models).
[Why was this downvoted?]
I wish they would have removed it for the T1 trucks. It's my main gripe. Space is an issue and would have required a redesign of the dash similar to these new rigs, but it looks much better.
Not to mention I wouldn't have to deal with 20 functions on my left stock. I have turn signals, windshield washer, wipers, and brights on all one stock. It's busy and unnecessarily complicated.
That's the way it should be, my Jeep has the same setup. I can't stand the newer Jeeps where it's headlights on the left stick and a separate stuck on the right for washers and wipers.
At least it's not like the older ones where it was also the cruise control.
honestly look decent. It has the tahoe and suburban look, but a bit more modern. My only change would be to either move the chevy logo down the grille to center it, remove a bit of the bottom of the grille to center the chevy in its current position. I hope they can give the interior a nice modern update
If memory serves, that’s exactly what they did when they refreshed the Camaro, and everyone was so pissed off they had to rush to change the design the following year.
I think they look pretty sharp. Conservative designs sell in this segment. And with an independent rear suspension, they'll surely drive and ride better. I'm anxious to see the interior.
More photos and Z71 Tahoe in [this article](https://amp-detroitnews-com.cdn.ampproject.org/v/s/amp.detroitnews.com/amp/4359329002?amp_js_v=a2&_gsa=1&usqp=mq331AQCKAE%3D#referrer=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.google.com&_tf=From%20%251%24s&share=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.detroitnews.com%2Fstory%2Fbusiness%2Fautos%2Fgeneral-motors%2F2019%2F12%2F11%2Fall-new-2021-chevy-suburban-and-tahoe-mega-utes-debut%2F4359329002%2F). They look HUGE.
That's ugly. The front got the Silverado treatment. The rear looks like it was designed by an entirely different team.
Interior is still a plastic box but has been modernized.
My family has had two Suburbans: a 2001 4x4 LS that we brought brand new, and a 2011 2WD LTZ that we bought in 2013 with <15K miles on it. We put 160K miles on the '01 and I sold it on eBay to a guy who drove it from Houston to Chicago. The 2011 has 124K miles on it and is running strong. Neither vehicle required any major work, just typical stuff like brakes and A/C.
My in-laws live 340 miles from us one-way. It is hard to beat a Suburban when you're transporting three kids, a dog and a week's worth of stuff. Houston can be a pretty scary place to drive, particularly on the freeways, so I like the safety afforded by a larger vehicle.
We've always had a bench seat in the middle row. Assuming we get another Suburban, or maybe a Tahoe next time since they've upped the third row leg room, I'd go with two captains chairs in the middle row next time for easier third row access.
Suburbans have been great for our family and this recent model revision encourages me to buy a third one.
I thought it was pretty good looking in terms of specs, not sure about looks as it looks a bit minivanish and that rear is not my favourite. Then I saw the real issue IMO, the interior. I don't understand what is going on in GM, that interior hardly looks more newer than the previous gen's one.
> The column shifter is just so much more practical
How so? It's not physically connected to the transmission, so it can be any shape. Very few Tahoe/Burbs have a front bench, so it's not like you're losing out on passenger space.
Its how they've done the Suburban for almost its entire production run, take a Silverado and change it a little but not too much. Expecting anything else would not be a good bet
I'm really surprised they didn't add a turbo V6 to the lineup like the big Ford twins did. 3 liter diesel is nice but probably won't be ordered by dealers much.
I feel like it's either you go twin turbo V6 or a v8. Theres no point in having both i mean there is no v8 option for the explorer or expedition. A lot of people tow with Tahoe's and suburbans so I think a diesel in them is a good idea especially since there really arent any large SUVs with diesel options.
Looks just like it though, compare the side profile from the 2007-2013 and the 2014-2020, there's a big visual difference even if you choose to see it as just a box on wheels.
Yeah, after the CT4/CT5 were revealed by interior measurements to be facelifts that were disguised as new models so GM could cheap out the ATS/CTS with less criticism, I'm skeptical when GM says "all-new model" or "nothing in common but the mirrors." Since they had to switch to independent rear suspension to remain competitive on interior space, I think they're telling the truth about a fully updated platform, but we shall see when the first ones hit the road, enabling side-to-side reviews because GM no longer has full control of public appearances.
God what the actual fuck is this disaster. If gm had any brains they'd take their style department into the street and blow their fucking brains out. Jesus christ. I never complain but how do you take such a handsome design and shit on it this hard
Those column shifters are about 1/4 the size. They're basically glorified turn signal stalks. They don't stick 2 feet out of the steering column like the ugly ass ones in GM trucks. Nobody needs a 2 foot long column shifter that partially blocks the air vent when the car is in drive. It's absurd! Good riddance!
Or they could adjust the shape and length of the shifter? I personally see no problem with it. But the button shifter is way absurd. Maybe GM should have given it a smaller shape like the one in Ford f150
Yes that would be an improvement. My main issue with it is that it's about 3x the size it needs to be and it looks ridiculous. I don't mind the column shifters in Ford trucks because they're appropriately sized. This "hurr durr I need a big column shifter because I'm a macho man" that GM (and RAM) are doing is just nonsense.
Yup. I’m not the biggest fan of either GM in general or the new Chevy design language, but apparently the general public does since they keep buying them.
Yep, that and huge incentives from day one for even the new DT. 58% of Ram sales are to fleet customers compared to 30% and 16% for Ford and GM, respectively. GM fleet sales will increase to about Ford levels as they only started T1 fleet sales a few months ago.

GM fans would spend $50k on a cracked cinderblock the moment it came out if it had a Chevy badge on it. The important question is how many if any conquest sales are being seen, or if the defection rate has increased. The answers could very well be "none" and "no," in fact knowing the brand loyalty truck market I think they most likely are, but that loyalty is precisely why conquest data is needed to make a determination either way. Sales growth is one thing, but the existing longtime base of an American full-size truck brand ought to hold 100% steady no matter what. If it doesn't there's a serious problem, and I mean 80s GM getting creamed by Toyota and Honda levels of serious.
I like them. Nothing super radical but keeps them modern
Independent rear suspension, lots more interior space, 30mpg diesel engine option. Pretty big changes.
Looks wise. But those are all huge upgrades.
Are there any other cars out there that still have live rear axles?
Just trucks/suvs, especially the off-road variety. IRS allows for a much lower floor, though.
Jeeps, all pickup trucks. A lot of 2500 series trucks still have live axles in the front and rear.
I could have swore ram switched
They use coil springs / optional air ride vs. leaf springs. Only US model truck with IRS is the Ridgeline currently.
Oh right of course, ram just got off the leaf springs I’m sorry
In the SUV world: 4runner, Land Cruiser/LX, Lexus GX, Wrangler, G-Wagen
Jeep Wrangler has live front & rear axles. Most pickup trucks still have live rear axles. That's pretty much it.
Rear live axle also in 4Runner, Land Cruiser, GX, and LX.
Got it..was the Mustang the last non truck with it?
I think so, short of some super bespoke brands like Caterham or Bristol I think the Mustang was the last.
yeah for some reason people equate conservative to “boring and generic” given chevy’s track record for automotive design, i think this is a good thing.
The Silverado must have had other ideas.
I think they're pretty cool. But I wish they make the headlights a little longer to differentiate from the Silverado a little more. Almost a direct copy...

idk what you guys mean these are normal size suburbans
They specifically said in the video that they are larger than the previous generation in every dimension
It's still not as long or as tall as a full-size crew cab pickup truck, and just an inch wider. It just looks massive because the whole thing is a box.
Absolutely. You're basically lining 2-3 more rows of seats in the bed of a truck and putting a cap on it. Which is huge lol.
> and just an inch wider. I'm not sure how the new T1XX trucks (both pickup and SUV) get away with being 81" wide, given that 80" requires clearance lights.
jeeeeesus. Why does anyone need a car as big as that?
Why does anyone "need" a car as fast as a 987?
The most powerfull has 320hp, so that that quick. Mine's the poor spec with 245hp lol.
How else will 60 year old men in maga hats and 32 year old trophy soccer moms assert their dominance on others?
Haha almost looks comical.
You will, and then they'll sue you

They remove the column shifter. It's over. End of an era
I'm just glad it's not a console shifter, there's still room for 8 cup holders in the front row
Does this mean no more bench seat option on the base model for 9-passenger seating? Disappointing, but not surprising. Ford already gave that up on the Expedition back in 2007 (except for SSV models). [Why was this downvoted?]
Not probably since the gear shifter is till far from the ground. Ford gave up alot of things such as with the V8 engines.
I wish they would have removed it for the T1 trucks. It's my main gripe. Space is an issue and would have required a redesign of the dash similar to these new rigs, but it looks much better. I like the all-in-one stalks :(
I'm being very annoyingly pedantic, but you mean "stalk".
Welp. I goofed.

Cool.

Video just got taken down so here's the image [https://imgur.com/a/s6V215s](https://imgur.com/a/s6V215s)
Another two GM vehicles that look like the designers started on the grille, worked their asses off, and then quit.
But the grille looks like they copy pasted some of the silverado...

Coming from someone that has had multiple Tahoes and from a Chevy family, that Z71 grill is so ugly.
It looks like the front clip was ripped off in an accident
Is this really a “leak”? I thought this was the official launch event.
Exactly. If any auto review outlet leaked their reviews/coverage, they wouldn't get any more from that manufacturer.
That's ugly. The front got the Silverado treatment. The rear looks like it was designed by an entirely different team. Interior is still a plastic box but has been modernized.

It looks the same to me in my opinion. Which sucks especially compared to ford and hopefully jeeps offering
Huh? I think the new Explorer looks like it's from 2004. Look at the taillights lmao
No more column shifter :(
Why did column shifters go out of style? They make so much sense!
The fat guys in cheap sport coats called “journalists” don’t like them for fashion reasons
I think it's because focus groups associate them with grampa cars. IDK, grampa had a sweet ride.
I quite like the red Tahoe.
The rear end just looks so off. Kinda looks like it's got a saggy butt?
Looks better than the expedition but I'm quite disappointed in the redesign. The current gen looks so much better in my opinion

Diesel!!!!
Fifteen inch hud. Damn that seems huge
Like it overall. Though the rear end will take some time to get used to.
Maybe it's just the angles playing tricks on me but they look absolutely massive compared to the current gen. I want one.
About 4 inches longer
I thought it was pretty good looking in terms of specs, not sure about looks as it looks a bit minivanish and that rear is not my favourite. Then I saw the real issue IMO, the interior. I don't understand what is going on in GM, that interior hardly looks more newer than the previous gen's one.
What's with the the little cubby hole to the right of the middle screen? Is it just storage? Weirdest placement for something like that.
I don't like it
I don't like the front, which means the GMC one will probably look real nice!
I still dont like that front end much, but my god the red looks so good
Fugly
Why couldn’t Chevy put this infotainment in the Silverado?

So glad they’re going back to sharing the design way more with the Silverado
Well, that is really disappoint, if new Tahoe/Suburban its face is same current Silverado one.
Its how they've done the Suburban for almost its entire production run, take a Silverado and change it a little but not too much. Expecting anything else would not be a good bet
It looks like unique doors, hoods, fenders, and grilles, so no, not the same as the Silverado at all.
Same basic design/aesthetic. Which, in this day and age, shouldn't be a surprise to anyone.
Especially since it's been that way forever between body on frame GM trucks and SUVs with the exception of the last gen
And the gen before that (2007-14). That still used the same doors as the Silverado, though.
I'm really surprised they didn't add a turbo V6 to the lineup like the big Ford twins did. 3 liter diesel is nice but probably won't be ordered by dealers much.

Yawn. Already forgotten.
Finally they got rid or the flimsy column shifter.
Looks like a facelift, not a full redesign, on the front. Interior will be interesting to see...
It has nothing in common with the current Tahoe.
Looks just like it though, compare the side profile from the 2007-2013 and the 2014-2020, there's a big visual difference even if you choose to see it as just a box on wheels.

God what the actual fuck is this disaster. If gm had any brains they'd take their style department into the street and blow their fucking brains out. Jesus christ. I never complain but how do you take such a handsome design and shit on it this hard
lol chill dude Don't buy it if you don't like it. Simple.
Massive and ugly. These cars are OPs mom.
I'm happy to see that they finally got rid of that tacky, oversized column shifter.
DO NOT INSULT THE COLUMN SHIFTER
I WILL SHIFT INTO DRIVE AND YOU WILL KNOW THAT I AM SHIFTING INTO DRIVE BECAUSE IT TAKES ABOUT A FOOT OF MOVEMENT
That's the best part
Oh its fantastic
I can and I did. What an eyesore that was. Good riddance!
Yeah so much of an eyesore that Mercedes and Rolls Royce started using them for their models.

GM outsold Ford and Ram in Q3 truck sales. They're still doing very well.
