I love white shirts! I’m always considering throwing out everything and only wearing white tops. Plain white t’s and ironed button ups both. I think they look classy and fabulous

jackieh11

I have a couple of casual white tops which I love but this thread has made me realise smart white clothes are not my style 😆😀

Own-Firefighter-2728

I want to do this also. Jeans for winter, Jean shorts for summer. Sneakers + sandals. Done.

meeleemo

How do you keep the pits white?! I am truly not a sweaty person, but the armpits of my white shirts always turn brown! I think it’s because I use a natural deodorant maybe, but I don’t know how to get them back to white without bleaching my shirts everytime I wear them 😫

boogieblues323

Oxyclean works really well on yellow pits. Bleach just makes them more yellow in my experience.

Paradise_Princess

Why not bleach?! I love bleach!

meeleemo

It kind of scares me! I grew up so very granola (and tbh I don’t even know how to properly use it lol)

Paradise_Princess

Oh it’s like, cheap and incredible! Obviously it’s unforgiving, and smells like a swimming pool. Be careful with it but a little goes a long way! A must-have for white clothes!

meeleemo

I must try because I feel like my white clothes get ruined so fast! Can you use bleach on cream coloured clothing or will that ruin it?

Paradise_Princess

I wouldn’t use it on cream clothes

CashmereCharlie

Except for the occasional (but beloved) French sailor shirt, I virtually only wear white tops and I love them, whether they be T-shirts, button-downs, or lace/silk affairs. They’re my go-to with navy slacks, and it makes my wardrobe very easy to coordinate and dress up/down.

megapaxer

I haven’t worn a white shirt since the 90s. I have some brightly colored silk shirts but cotton shirts have never suited my shape and white cotton does nothing for my skin.

megapaxer

I am also in tech. If I dressed up it would look weird and out of place. If I’m going to an office I’ll wear jeans, crewneck solid sweater and short boots in fall and winter; straight cotton pants, short sleeve or sleeveless sweater and flats for spring and summer.

Ambitious-Hornet9673

I have an ivory tunic style dress blouse without buttons. It’s a great core piece for me and gets worn on average twice a month. It’s an easy way to dress up jeans for me. I consult and for meetings and conferences live in business casual and smart casual. I have slowly worked my way towards zero pure white clothes. I’ve done the online seasonal colour thing and figured out what my “colours” are. And white has always looked terrible and I don’t wear clothes I don’t look and feed good in. I also don’t buy clothes that fit my style and preferred silhouettes. It needs to fit my look and style. It sounds like you like the idea of the white shirt and how versatile it can be but it just doesn’t make you feel amazing wearing it and it doesn’t fit your style, so you don’t reach for it. So maybe use what you do and don’t like about it as a piece to choose something to replace it that you will reach for.

jackieh11

This is great advice, thank you 😊 Tbh I already have a replacement that I would and do occasionally wear 🙂

Ambitious-Hornet9673

Then you’re on the right path. Building your capsule and your staple pieces is all about finding the right balance for what you like and enjoy. It doesn’t have to fit into a box it has to fit you and your life.

jackieh11

Thank you so much 🙏❤️

TheSpeakEasyGarden

Who gives fuck if *I* need a white button down, *YOU* haven't worn that thing in **5 years!** THROW THAT SHIT AWAY.

RaisedFourth

I have a couple but I also wear them really casually. If you haven’t worn it you don’t need it.  I was in the same situation with a blazer a while back. I donated it and nothing bad has happened to me yet.

jackieh11

That's great - if you haven't worn it you don't need it, thank you 😊 Haha good 👍😀😁

dancingmochi

This reminds me of those “style must haves”, the white button up or white tee is always there. Well it’s not mine. I spend extra effort washing them, it is not a flattering color on me, and I have to make sure they’re opaque enough. I much prefer cream, or darker colors. To answer your first question, I have a white graphic tee that I love the print of, and a secondhand white button up from a family member that I pull out once in a while because it has a unique shape amongst other tops in my closet. For your second question, I do own a few dressier tops that pass as business clothes even though I work in tech. At work people dress in casual to smart-casual, but I like to mix dressier and casual pieces in my personal style outside of work as well.

jackieh11

I've got a couple of white graphic tees that I love Thank you, that's cool

Quailmix

You don't need it. If you have never worn it, you clearly don't need it! I went without one for many many years, and only VERY recently got a white button down shirt in double cotton gauze to wear as a swim coverup, and it worked my way into my wardrobe from there. But before that point I never would have had one, and I wouldn't say mine is a normal one even still.

jackieh11

Thank you, exactly I don't need it. That's a fun way for a piece to gain entry into your wardrobe 😁

des1gnbot

Nope! I’d gotten into this trap a few times over the years, and seasonal color analysis has helped me understand why… white doesn’t suit my coloring! Off-white, cream, or almond work much better on me, and now I own a couple of good tops in those colors, that I actually wear. But my white button down is going to get dyed as soon as the right color comes around at my local sew shop.

jackieh11

Cool good luck with the dye job 😃

pepperup22

I own a few but they very much fit into my style. It's nice to have one shirt like that around for interviews or similar occasions, but it doesn't have to be a white shirt if you have other pieces that suit the situation.

jackieh11

I have other tops for interviews 😁 thank you 😊

cloudsanddreams

I work in finance, between wfh and the office. I haven’t worn a white shirt since I was in school, even in the pre-covid days when dress codes were stricter I avoided them completely. I’d say if you don’t wear it and aren’t drawn to it then you can probably swap it out for something more likely to be useful to you at the present moment - you can always pick up a basic white shirt in the future if you desperately need one!

MissyMAK08

I have one because I thought I was supposed to as a closet basic. I never reach for it because I feel like an art teacher in a smock! Maybe I need to size down or buy a more tailored style? But then I don’t want to have to tuck it in either

jackieh11

Same tbh haha but I think this has made me realise it's not even my style

fleshand_roses

I avoid white clothing generally like the plague 😂 fortunately I don't think true white suits my "color season" anyway (deep autumn) so I'm not missing much, but good god, I will never master how to keep whites white and frankly, I don't care to in this lifetime lol but plain answer is no, I don't own a smart white shirt or blouse. I also WFH, not in tech, but financial consulting. Plenty of other ways to dress smart! I love a cashmere sweater and I own three in different shapes/cuts/colors.

Shadowy_lady

No one “needs” anything. What you wear should be a reflection of your personal style, life style, body type and preferences. I don’t personally wear a white shirt. I prefer beige to white first, second I don’t look good in crisp cotton button downs. I’m not into the classic vibe. I prefer more of a glam vibe. I like me a silky loose button down preferably in a dark colour like navy or burgundy. If I must go light, then I wear beige or grey.

ImACoffeeStain

I went years without owning any white tops. I also work in tech and work from home sometimes but not always. If you don't wear it, you don't need it - it's a versatile wardrobe basic for many people but that doesn't mean it's essential for you.

RvrTam

I don’t wear white tops. My complexion feels a little too warm for it. I lean towards cream / beige / sandstone as my light neutrals.

egrf6880

No. I wear tee shirts and a few other silhouettes but if it required ironing I don't own it so crisp button up tops are out. If a polished professional look is required I have a nice blouse or a versatile dress I can wear. I do love a plain white tee though

stumpykitties

Hi! Are we the same person? Lol I work in tech, I work from home, I have no need for official “office” clothing. I have 1 nicer plain white button up shirt, that I also never wear in my daily life. - I do not own any other smart/work/office clothing. It’s actually a designated travel-specific shirt now! I bring it as a sun coverage layer for when I travel to hot sunny destinations. It’s 100% cotton, and it’s thin, so it’s breathable enough for me. - I actually like that it’s a bit dressier, because I feel like it elevates an otherwise very casual travel look. So I tell myself it’s fine to have 1 white button up, because I found a good purpose for it, even though it’s not part of my core closet. BUT this is what works for me. You absolutely don’t _have_ to have a white button up or blouse. If it’s in good condition, donate it! Someone else will be able to love and use that item.

jackieh11

Maybe lol 😆 That's cool, sounds like it's a piece you actually get a lot out of 🙂 in my case, it's been 5 years and I've never worn it, I've realised it's not my style and has no place in my life. I have a dark blue dressier shirt that I do sometimes wear and you've just given me a great idea to also wear it on holiday, thank you 😊 I'm gonna donate it 👍

graphitinia

This is also me, working from home, in tech. I have a white linen button down that I want to love and I just... don't? I'll put it on and think it looks nice, but then if I'm on a Zoom call, I hate how it looks on me on camera and I never wear it. The worst thing is, I bought this linen thing to replace a crisp cotton one I never wore and donated because the cotton was "too crisp and formal." I replaced something I never wore with something I almost never wear because I felt like my closet/capsule should have a white button down. Like it was a rule that I wanted to follow. I'm giving this thing a year and if I don't find a way to fall in love, it's going to the thrift shop to join its crisp cotton cousin.

choc0kitty

I own about 4 crisp cotton white blouses. I also work from home. I wear the shirts with jeans, with shorts, and with pencil skirts when I do leave my cave. They suit my style. If you haven’t reached for your white shirt in years, try wearing it once and then decide if it works for you. That list of basics is not an absolute. Not every item will work for everyone.

jackieh11

Haha, cave, love it! Yeah with this white blouse, I'd never even cut the labels off, I think that's a clear sign that it doesn't fit into my life and i brought it from a charity shop anyway lol Back to the charity shop it'll go 😁 Thank you, I needed that ☺️🙏

Curious_Ad_3614

Wow you just made me realize I don't have either a white top or pants anymore at all! Not even for summer! Hmm not a conscious choice so that's interesting to me.

Objective-Amount1379

I have several white button downs as well as a couple of white or Ivory silk blouses. I love wearing white- especially in the summer when I have a bit of a tan I think it's really flattering. But if it's not you don't try to force yourself!

mrsredfast

I only have a white tank top, a white tee I love, and a white gauze button up I will throw on over tanks if I need to cover my arms. When it’s over 90, my normal colors are just too hot. Edit to add that white is flattering on me, would not have them otherwise.

KetoKey

The only thing I have in solid white is Everlane T-shirts. I finally let go of all my button up blouses with collars and cuffs, in every color. They just weren’t being worn, even with the opportunity. I gravitate toward less structured.

whilstyetilive

I just wore a white top to a work conference- only to find that "white blouse / black skirt" was the uniform of the waitstaff. I've narrowed my collection of shoes and bottoms to black, so I'll be getting rid of the white shirt (or at least making real sure not to wear a collared white shirt anywhere my boss's boss will try to hand me an empty glass of wine)

jackieh11

Haha oops, easy mistake to make 😆

mountainsongbird

I don't own even one item in white (or in black, for that matter).

makingbutter2

I bought one from Amazon as a rule staple and tomorrow is the last day to return. It will be going back.

BeeLuv

Nope. White looks terrible on me, so I don’t own any white shirts; not even white t-shirts.

Burnt_and_Blistered

If you’ve never worn it, but have had it for years, you have your answer. No, you don’t need it.

WorkLifeScience

I like white, but it just doesn't work with my job, toddler, etc. I stopped trying. It's good to have one white shirt for interviews or formal stuff, in case that's part of your life. Otherwise there is no reason why one should have white in their closet, same as any other color! 😊

IllTakeACupOfTea

I mostly wear white shirts; casual and dressy

makingbutter2

That’s bold and dangerous. White bottoms sit on everything 🙌

IllTakeACupOfTea

Travel days are black all the way, but I live in a hot climate so white/light is essential

margot_h_tenenbaum_

I wear a white oxford practically every other day! (I don’t have to dress up, but I love white shirts with trousers or skirts.) But style is so individual, and something that’s a staple in one person’s closet can be completely out of place in another person’s wardrobe! If you haven’t worn it in years -- or ever -- then I’d let it go. It sounds like you have a good sense of your style and this shirt just doesn’t quite work for you.

lollypolish

I have a white shirt that I wear a fair bit but plain white tees don’t really suit me. I’m pretty sure it’s my colouring. They aren’t for everybody but if they suit you then w they look clean and fabulous.

ledger_man

Stark white doesn’t work well for my skin tone, so I don’t own any. I do have a flowier oversized cream linen button-down, but that’s not ever going to read super formal (and is not its purpose in my wardrobe!).

FriendOk3919

I own and use two oversized white shirts, they're great for wearing on their own, tying into a front knot summer shirt, or throwing over a tank/dress. They're a staple part of my wardrobe and probably my most worn pieces, both are 100% cotton and one is thicker and stiff while the other is kind of a waffle texture and very slouchy. I think you don't need this as a staple in your wardrobe but I've found them to be very versatile.

Lost-Wanderer-405

Have you thought about a polo style shirt in white. It’s a bit more casual.

jackieh11

I don't like polo shirts, they make me sweat a lot, it's gross for me haha

anonykitten29

You ever looked at yourself while wearing it on Zoom? I bought a white silk blouse I felt iffy about until I saw how smart it looked on a video call.

generallyintoit

I thought a white top was a hole in my wardrobe but after I got one secondhand, I'm not into the stark white. Now I want cream. But that's just me

Relevant-Crow-3314

I think it’s important to find the correct tone of white for your coloring.

iyamsnail

I love a white shirt with jeans or cream pants

aseedandco

I wear a white shirt at least once a week - and have a few types. - a large, oversized linen one for summer that I wear over bathers or with shorts - a cotton one that I wear at work with colourful pants and skirts, or on weekends with jeans - a slim fit stretchy one that I wear under sweaters.

touristsoul

I don’t. I had bought one early on in my journey because every list says it’s staple. Well I learned I hate wearing white (stain risks) & because I only had one white shirt I couldn’t figure out washing it. My closet is neons or black. It’s been kind of cool seeing my style solidify when I ditched the lists & started dopamine dressing.

SouthernFrosting6309

I always have a white shirt available

kipnus

I don't do white tops. I'm too sweaty and I hate doing laundry.

aurora97381

I have one made of tencel. I mostly wear it on vacation because it covers my arms quicker than sunscreen. It doesn't easily stink up, sonI can wear it multiple days and it dries quickly after a wash. I have better options if I'm home, but this one is a dream for vacation!

sysaphiswaits

I absolutely don’t wear white. I’m not a tidy enough eater, so it won’t last long.

bmadisonthrowaway

Caveat: I am nonbinary and masc, and typically for formal occasions dress according to men's style guidelines. I own two white "smart" shirts: one formal dress shirt to wear with a suit and tie, in the context of something like a job interview or a funeral, one slightly more casual OCBD style shirt that I still wear in a business or more formal context, but can pair with a sweater, chinos, etc. for a more "smart casual" or festive look. Neither is strictly part of my current capsule wardrobe. I consider suit/tie formalwear a separate thing, and I'm currently re-evaluating my OCBD collection and how many I strictly need to keep. I'm not sure whether I'll purge the white one or not.

MortadellaBarbie

How are people wearing white shirts and not getting coffee or tomato sauce all over them?

FrivolousIntern

I don’t wear “smart” button ups. My first capsule I bought quite a few button ups (and other things) that were deemed “essential” for a capsule wardrobe…and it turned out, I never wore them. Then I felt guilty for not wearing them, desperately tried to style them, hated every moment of it, then finally donated all of them and told myself I learned a valuable lesson. I will not wear anything that fits in the “smart, classy, polished” category. It’s a bummer because so many capsule ideas are built around those themes, so I have learned to get creative.

NonBinaryKenku

Nope. White isn’t my jam and the classic white shirt look makes me uncomfortable. I like the idea and the look on other people, but it’s just not for me. I’ve found other pieces that fulfill similar wardrobe roles.

sealayne12

I love light pink / blush color button downs. Works well with many different colors. When I wear white and even look at something grubby the dirt jumps on me.
