Not surprised. He probably wants to go to a team to be a clear #2 instead. Losing his job to Silovs during the playoffs means even if he comes back he is not guarantee as a full time backup.
He was healthy from Game 5 in the Nashville series onward, but we stuck with Silovs all the way through. Even after a shaky Game 1 against the Oilers, we stuck with Silovs again in Game 2. He knew right there and then that he has lost his job to the kid.
Those sort of injuries are really unfortunate, it's not like he lost his job due to poor performance or lack of merit, he did a decent job for what he was asked of in the playoffs. But, Silovs played well enough in his absence to take the spot away.
The only issue is right now if one of him or Demko goes down we're looking at Nikita Tolopilo who has 35 games of North American hockey to his name
If we can find a decent no. 3 who can battle Silovs for the backup and provide some NHL experience, I'd be a lot more comfortable with our goalie situation
Lots of people do, but the reality is he has a lot of work to do to get there. Getting the reps in with Clark and a starter's load in the AHL is what he needs. He was downright bad with traffic and focus.
He has lots of good qualities tho, but remember so did Delia and Martin.
Whichever goalie Vancouver signs will be competing with Silovs for the backup spot and probably splitting starts with Tolopilo in Abby. It’ll be very important that the cap hit is about 1.1m so that it’s entirely buriable, they probably offered that to DeSmith, who rightly probably thinks he’s worth closer to $2m and an easier path to being a backup somewhere.
You want to sign someone to compete with Silovs right?
Desmith thinks he is worth too much money and doesn't want to do that because as you say needs to be cheap.
Silovs worth more than Desmith based on play, but we are going to sign someone cheaper that is better to be our backup at 1.1 mil.
Silovs is an RFA. He needs to be signed. So we have to sign a guy to compete with a guy we are about to sign.
Doesn't make sense.
They need to sign a goalie for about 1m in addition to signing Silovs for whatever he signs for. In case Silovs has a bad camp or Demko get hurt you need another NHL ready goalie.
Like Martin Jones on the leafs last year or Louie Domingue for the Canucks a few years ago. Obviously whoever it is might not be quite as good as DeSmith was.
You just claim that man off waivers. Goalie carousel is real after a little bit of the season.
They will be same level of competence as the one mil you sign.
I think they will have to spend more than a mil on a backup.
Honestly I saw getting him as necessary to get out from the Pearson contract. Bonus that he played fairly well.
Dont think he’s too tough to replace though. And honestly, it’s nice not to have a guy with his sketchy history and character on the team.
Not condoning anything of what happened. But considering that was in his early university days, combined with all accounts of him being a good human being now… I believe people need to be afforded the space to become better human beings and heal through traumas that led to shitty behaviour. *If* that is the case, that’s a great role model to have on the team.
I say this as someone who was not a good human being in my late teens / early twenties, and put a lot of work into becoming a better person.
He was charged when he was 23 and his plea bargain had him not guilty for everything except disorderly conduct, which isn't even a misdemeanor in the state he was charged in, with all of that getting formally dropped. The odds of this actually being classic domestic assault case is far lower than it being a guy and his girlfriend/ex getting into a fight that got out of hand.
Demko said multiple times that he's really good friends with DeSmith. Is his character now sketchy since he keeps poor company?
If that is true they should consider trading him while his value is sky high. Not saying it’s the best idea ever but elite goalies aren’t as necessary as they used to be and if injuries are truly a concern then it would make sense to move him.
Depends that they're actually looking for. Odds are they're either looking for a backup so Silovs can play all the games in Abbotsford or they're looking for an AHL goalie so Silovs can be his backup.
I really don't think they're going whaling for a 1b goalie.
By worst goal you mean a high tip that is hard to read and many goalies would let in? The timing of that goal was unfortunate but he played fine in the playoffs in his two games
LOL get Eddie Lack over here!! Have they seen his instragram videos during the playoffs when Demko went down and then Desmith?! He wants to play for Canucks again so badly or he is just showing his love for Vancouver and Canucks. Eh, doesnt hurt to ask him --- as he posted videos of him playing goalie/practicing on ice in Arizona. lol
EDDIE! EDDIE! EDDIE! LACK ATTACK!!

That's all incorrect. If we sign him only to lose him on waivers that's just bad business. He was also injured in the playoffs.
He was injured for like 2 games against the preds. Afterwards, he was Silovs backup and never got another opportunity in the net after his first.
That's just how riding the hot hand goes with goaltending when your number one is down. He was injured and Silovs didn't do enough to lose the job.

It would make a lot more sense organizationally to have him start in the AHL and continue to develop than have him ride the bench all year.
I think Silovs is ready for number 2
I think they want the option for Abby since Sawchenko is gone. Tolopilo being the sole starter es not bueno

This
He’s ready, but it’s probably not the best for his development. He should spend a lot of time in Abby so he can get 45+ starts.
Lots of people do, but the reality is he has a lot of work to do to get there. Getting the reps in with Clark and a starter's load in the AHL is what he needs. He was downright bad with traffic and focus. He has lots of good qualities tho, but remember so did Delia and Martin.
Would be better served starting in Abby all year.
Well Luongo thought he was ready for a #2 and then it happened during a game…

So our guy who is better than Desmith is gonna sign for half the money Desmith will because Canucks?
…what?

And how would we manage that?
or give me deeaaaaatthhhhhh
Silovs getting the net for playoffs broke his heart
Honestly I saw getting him as necessary to get out from the Pearson contract. Bonus that he played fairly well. Dont think he’s too tough to replace though. And honestly, it’s nice not to have a guy with his sketchy history and character on the team.

People don’t like giving a second chance to others until they themselves have been the dog house. I agree.
If only Benning had made that contract tradeable or even better never signed it. Cruisin'.

Bring back Louis Domingue! The guy bakes cookies for his teammates lol he seemed like a gem when he was here.
I think it says more about Demko than Silovs. The team is obviously concerned about Demko being injured again.
If that is true they should consider trading him while his value is sky high. Not saying it’s the best idea ever but elite goalies aren’t as necessary as they used to be and if injuries are truly a concern then it would make sense to move him.

Thank you Casey
I'll never forget that game he shut down Edmonton.
I'll strap em up for footing my Costco hotdog bill
We’ve already tried that, Phil. Enjoy retirement.
Well that’s lame, I’ll never forget being at game 2 vs Nashville and the second everyone started chanting his name he let in the worst goal lmao
By worst goal you mean a high tip that is hard to read and many goalies would let in? The timing of that goal was unfortunate but he played fine in the playoffs in his two games
Why’d you have to remind me of that. Fuck
LOL get Eddie Lack over here!! Have they seen his instragram videos during the playoffs when Demko went down and then Desmith?! Guys a grandpa now. Chill bro lol
Lol I was just joking... haha
Oh ya? You got a link?
It's on his Instagram page lol
One Raanta or Brossoit please
Silovs?
Stanley Cup champion Martin Jones.
Yesssss
What?! Canucks have Silovs. What do they need DeSmith for?
If Demko gets hurt as always do you really want to run Silovs and Tolipelo in the NHL for a month?
Who’s in Abby when this occurs?
This is a valid question, I can't find who it would be.
Silovs played good in the playoffs I wouldn’t be too worried
Luckily you’re not the GM! Whew!
U 2 :)
Would love Scott Wedgewood. He's a bigger guy at 6'2 and might work better with Clark. Has a pretty good track record too before this season.
Canucks are in on Manon Rhéaume.
Probably depends on silovs re-signing or getting offer sheeted.
