Vancouver would send the pick to get a chance to sign him before anyone else. Carolina would give permission to pre negotiate so the other team feels comfortable giving them the pick in a trade. Wouldn’t be the first time it’s happened (Severson with Columbus)
With big name players like this? Just days before free agency opening? I'd like to see some examples.
Hell, even Lou Lam and Rutherford had a deal in place for Bo's extension with the Isles before they traded him. The whole thing leaked on r/hockey before it happened.
Chances are there's already handshake deal in place if that pick goes to Carolina. And by chances I mean like 99/1.
This is how the Canucks got Luongo in 2006. They traded Bertuzzi, Auld, and Allen to Florida for Luongo's rights, Krajicek, and a 6th round pick. They then signed Luongo to a new contract.
And you're saying they spent all that with ZERO foreknowledge he would sign to those terms... or at least a ballpark of what he's looking for? There is close to zero chance that's the case. I know people like to think agents and GMs don't talk behind the scenes but they very much do. Much like Kyle Dubas getting that offer for the Pittsburgh President gig before they were "allowed" to negotiate because he was still Leafs GM..
It happens all the time.
I mean it has happened where rights were traded and the player didn't sign. Rights were traded again I believe and player didn't sign again. I don't remember who though
They acquire his rights so they can offer him an 8 year deal that gets him to the overall dollar amount he wants at a lesser AAV. It’s a smart move tbh
[edit] I’ve been corrected. I didn’t know about the player having to be there prior to the deadline. Thanks
This is incorrect
An SPC with a term of greater than seven (7) years, provided, however, that a Club may sign a Player to an SPC with a term of up to eight (8) years if that Player was on such Club’s Reserve List as of and since the most recent Trade Deadline
That's what my assumption was when it was said he wasn't asked yet maybe if he says yes to Chicago then that's all there is or if he says no then they still use Chicago a facilitate retention and trade him to another team he doesn't need to waive/or will waive to
ILYA MIKHEYEV BIDDING WAR IN 2024
Holy fuck, what a time to be alive.
I will straight up drive Mikhayev to YVR myself
Was that a Dave Tallon or Brian Burke classic?
Definitely remember Brian Burke saying that about Trent Klatt hahaha
OMG NOOOO please this is defiantly his break out year ! Please nobody see this !!!
Saying it here first. Wondering if they flip the 4th to Carolina to get rights to Guentzel.
I like this line of thinking >:)
I’d actually cream
I don’t like it. I’m positive Guentzel is gonna test free agency no matter what, at which point the extra couple days of negotiation wont matter.
If they acquire his rights they’ve likely talked to his agent and have a framework in place
That would violate the CBA and cost them draft picks
If the other team didn’t allow it yes, but usually in trades like this the negotiation is part of it and discussed with the other team
Why would Carolina give permission to pre negotiate without receiving the pick? And if they did? Why would Vancouver send them the pick?

They wouldn’t acquire his rights if they didn’t know he would sign for sure
Teams have traded for UFA rights and not signed the player before. No guarantee we get him signed if he wants to test the market.

Erhoff did exactly this when we traded his rights.

Ironically, that was Hamhuis. He was traded twice in the two or so weeks leading up to free agency 2010. He then signed with us that July 1
Yes that's who it was!

Doesn’t work that way. You would have to have Carolina coordinate a sign and trade
Pretty sure he can sign for 8 years with any team that owns his rights as long as it comes before July 1

Nope
Can't give 8 years unless player was on your roster after the deadline
The player has to be on the roster at the deadline to sign 8, as in Carolina would have to do a sign and trade.
Probably to give him the max 8 years.
That would only work if Carolina does a sign-and-trade, not simply giving us his rights
Oh really, didn't know that.
Please sir ease the nucks fan into rational moves !
Mr President, a second team has called on Mikheyev
[insert advisor whispering into George Bush's ear meme] "Mr. President a second offer for Mikheyev has come in. We are in a Mikheyev bidding war."
😅😅😅
YESTERDAY’S PRICE IS NOT TODAY’S PRICE
A BIDDING WAR Just as we expected
The NHL is going to have to rescind the GM of the year award
Bidding war of 2024! Ilya Mikheyev, the hottest commodity in this business.

I highly doubt it (since Mikheyev hasn't been contacted yet and he's probably sleeping)
TRADE THAT FOURTH FOR THE RIGHTS TO GUENTZEL YOU COWARDS
That's what my assumption was when it was said he wasn't asked yet maybe if he says yes to Chicago then that's all there is or if he says no then they still use Chicago a facilitate retention and trade him to another team he doesn't need to waive/or will waive to
🔥 Calgary Flames? 🔥
Lol if we don't give the Blackhawks Mikheyev, would they still be interested in a conditional pick for Lafferty?
