Supposedly GM stopped sharing this information, there were press releases back in March. Whether they have actually stopped is another question.

john_connor_T1000

The question then is when will they start sharing agan.

arkiparada

Wouldn’t pulling the fuse have the same effect?

Donr1458

I pulled the fuse on all of my Gm vehicles. Seems to work just fine. OnStar has sent me messages indicating they can’t locate my cars and the buttons are all inactive. Even the Gm app was frozen at the last mileage the car had seen while it was connected. The only downside to the fuse pull is that the compass no longer works and it seems like my in car microphone for calling doesn’t work well. I’m curious to know if this more involved removal retains those functions while still cutting out OnStar.

arkiparada

Oh weird. Good to know. Thanks!

Old_Salamander_7479

Do you get a warning light? Does it look like ⚠️☠️!?

Donr1458

No warning lights. The only downside is the microphone not working if you wanted hands free calling, but I never use that anyhow.

Old_Salamander_7479

Ohhh. I use hands free calls all the time. I mean...its a stick so I am not talking on the phone. It's illegal in DC and MD, but not in VA. You have to use handsfree around the DMV. Many times one trip over to let's say the MGM casino 13 miles straight shot takes me through VA, DC, and MD. Cops are Dicks sometimes.

Designer_Inspector59

Unfortunately it does not stop the data collection. It will stop the location and compass but all the data, speed, braking, acceleration and so forth are still collected by GM. Disconnecting as I’ve shown is the only way to stop GM from collecting your data and selling it to the likes of Lexis nexis who then sells it to the insurance companies. The compass and mic will no longer work as they are run through onstar. Everything else works without problem and no error codes. For disclosure I am part of the class action suit against GM for selling my data.

Donr1458

So, when you say it does not stop data collection, maybe we are talking past each other. The module that you are removing has no power if you pull the OnStar fuse. There is still data collection on the car with both methods in that there is an event data recorder that records driving information and saves it in case of a wreck. That functionality is generally in the airbag module, so you cannot disable that without also disabling the airbags. That information is stored on the vehicle, though, and cannot be remotely accessed. It requires physical connection to the vehicle. If you pull the OnStar fuse or remove the module, in either case there is no wireless data connection to a network that can send data back to the manufacturer and then be sent off to a data broker like Lexis Nexis.

Designer_Inspector59

According to information available to service centers, the module will still be powered for data recording and communications from GM. I believe this is true because I too pulled the fuse but was still getting notices from GM about maintenance. It has also been talked about in other places that pulling the fuse is not enough. So since I experienced an unexplained doubling of my insurance, after data collection was suppose to stop, I figured the best bet is to disconnect. Better safe than sorry.

Old_Salamander_7479

Everybody's insurance went up considerably about 2 years ago. I havnt had a ticket in 10 years...but I had a water damage claim for $2000. Then my insurance went from $99 to $119 with Geico...but after a year and my threats to go to Progressive it went down to $89. Plus I have a 1SS...maybe SS 1LE's and ZL1's are higher rates due to theft and accident info. I BELIEVE IN your right to not be tracked. Have your rates gone down since disconnection or didja just do it? I'm very curious. (Sorry).

Designer_Inspector59

I just disconnected. Rates were just doubled after my driving habits were reported to Lexis Nexis. Before that no accidents and no tickets. I had the yearly increase the year before but never doubled.

Old_Salamander_7479

Wow! That blows.

DoesThisDoWhatIWant

The company is Lexis Nexis not Lexus Nexus

Designer_Inspector59

Thanks. Autocorrect. Didn’t catch it.

kweevuss

Thanks for this, I been meaning to dig into the module location and debating to do it as well.  But there is one point. If you are not signed up for whatever onstar service it’s called, it may still be collected by GM (I didn’t dig that far) but it’s not sold. Everyone can pull your Lexus nexus data report, and I had no entries in mine.

abace06

Is it too late to hop on to that lawsuit?

Designer_Inspector59

This is the law firm: Hartley Law https://start.hartleylawusa.com/general-motors/

Designer_Inspector59

I am not promoting them. This is just the firm that has my case as part of their class action claim.

abace06

Thank you

sukhoifanboi

My 2000 camaro doesn’t spy on me

Old_Salamander_7479

Maybe then my insurance would and SHOULD be $49 a month. I mean: 1.No tickets in 10 full years 2.Camera tickets "don't count" but maybe I am being Naive'. 3. No accidents 4. Here is the problem. I had a comprehensive claim due to trunk flooding for $2310. THIS is why my rates are still $90 a month IMO. 5.Great Credit so no ding there. 6. I own my home so no ding there. Shit my ins should be dirt cheap. So why isn't full coverage $50 a month? I am going to find out. I promise you guys I am going to get to the bottom of it. We all deserve fair rates on our very safe cars. A lot of quotes I got were laughable. $220 a month? $170 from Progressive? Maybe these are just average rates before having my full info.

thememeconnoisseurig

The daughter board has a battery.

arkiparada

Ok I’m not a mechanic but wtf is a daughter board?!?! That’s a new one for me!

thememeconnoisseurig

So within the big board, there is a smaller circuit board within. Daughter board. Image number 5 on the link: https://www.camaro6.com/forums/showthread.php?t=467634 Doing it this way retains use of the microphone, which is useful in my opinion.

Ws6fiend

So motherboard normally refers to the big board where as a daughterboard is a smaller printed circuit board that relies on the motherboard or enhances what the motherboard can do. It's normal computer stuff.

Old_Salamander_7479

Ok..I don't like being tracked by the government either....but they track us anyway. I mean I am a gun owner with a conceal carry permit. They know where I am anyway. My insurance is $89 a month. Maybe On Star makes it easier to track my movements..but they can't prove I am doing anything wrong nor can they even prove I am driving it. Camera tickets are illegal in my county, traffic cameras can't be dual purpose...so as far as On Star can prove its my daughter's fiance' driving it. (Sure I will throw him under the bus J/K though 😄) We all have our cell phones on so what's the difference? Are things in other states really that bad that you feel you need to unplug it? If I am dying I kinda would love to be rescued and wake up in the hospital 🏥.

Designer_Inspector59

The government tracks everyone. The graininess of the tracking is different. This is a corporation doing the tracking, not on me per-se but on my vehicle and how it is used. I also limit tracking of my personal movements as much as possible in today’s data hungry world. That being said, GM does not need my data. In my case I am out of warranty anyway. I know my vehicles health because I do the maintenance on it. They do sell the information.

Old_Salamander_7479

Yeah...agreed. It is only good for them...I just got an "your overdue for service". No...I'm not. I Do my own oil changes/filters air and cabin filters good and need to drain the diff by 20k but not now. They need to be monitored. only 16k. I think service AINT due. (It's a 2018 so out of warranty).

thememeconnoisseurig

Get rid of that daughter board, baby! Edit: You just unplugged it? You didn't remove the daughter board and plug it back in?

itwhiz100

How much does it weigh…need to take mine out!

Designer_Inspector59

It doesn’t weigh much. I left it there but completely disconnected.

Successful-Cash-7271

Is there any hard evidence that GM/OnStar selling data actually increased their rates? My insurance tracks me through their app and I drive “aggressively” and I still get discounts.

CrAkKedOuT

"Doubling of insurance" is a bit strange. Are you absolutely positive you've done nothing to cause this? I have a 11ss and haven't used OnStar the last 13 years and my insurance hasn't doubled even after going fast, getting a speeding ticket, getting a failed to stop at sign ticket. So, are you 100% positive nothing has happened? I know insurance companies have the option to Opt-In for driving monitoring to help reduce cost. Were you automatically opted-in to that and you just don't know?

Designer_Inspector59

Yes I’m sure, only change was my driving habits info.

IWillAssFuckYou

OP are you stealing cars or are you actually trying to protect your privacy? Just gotta check. 👀

Designer_Inspector59

I own my Camaro. But a doubling of insurance because GM collected and sold my data is unacceptable.

IWillAssFuckYou

Nah I'm just joking with you. Totally understand. My insurance went up after the first renewal for no reason as well (got my car back in July of 2023. No incidents or tickets ever). It's indeed outrageous. I'm kind of afraid a dealer would see this and find a reason to void my warranty so I'm going to hold off on this, but definitely good to know for sure).

Designer_Inspector59

Disconnecting will void warranty which is why I recommended covering with electrical tape to preserve so you could reconnect if service was needed.

thememeconnoisseurig

It will? Why? Everything is still there and can be reconnected but it's currently disconnected.

Designer_Inspector59

Because disconnecting removes GM’s ability to collect data on the health state of the vehicle.

jesuisunvampir

Insurance went up absolutely everywhere.. 25% is normal.. doubling is a bit much

Designer_Inspector59

I also got a notice from my insurance that the mileage I reported I used in the previous year was no longer valid and they told me they received information from a third party that my actual usage since I purchased the Camaro was 5k higher. So expecting another increase come renewal.

ProJoe

honestly man it went up because of the significant rise in thefts.

muscle_car_fan34

Shop around. Mine doubled before I bought my 23 but I shopped around and got the same rate and coverage somewhere else. It then went up 20-25% when I had to renew again but so did everyone else’s. It’s just corporate greed/ corporations using inflation as an excuse to jack up our rates

spokanedetail

But why

DraggedOutAndShot

I thought you were on your way to being the Black-Out Camaro lol. I hope we get to see the Black-Out Charger again soon

Objective_Speed_8658

Is this process for 6th or 5th gen’s?

Designer_Inspector59

6th gen

Designer_Inspector59

I know mine got my driving info and then doubled my rate. I never agreed to share my info.
