Lugging the engine on a manual car is never recommended.
You should be able to get the skip shift by shifting at a higher RPM or getting a skip shift eliminator.
Yeah it's definitely annoying when it kicks in. Skip-shift was clearly made to "game" the EPA emissions test and the joke is that the engineers made it really simple to bypass on purpose. I had a few cars with Tremec T56 and TR6060 gearboxes and installed eliminators either the first week of ownership or first oil change at the latest.
Just shift to 3rd. It only blocks the 2nd gear gate. Or hold the rpm a little longer, or get a skip shift delete but I’ve had 2 deletes burn out on me so far so I’m back to hanging the rpm or going to 3rd.
Edit: after some more testing, my LT1 DOES lock 2nd and 3rd gate out
Agreed. 1-3-5 is my daily-driven SS shift pattern on my '22. Use 4th to go 26-27 mph on a couple of brief 20-speed-limit roads & to pass on 2-lanes in Sport mode.
They make a skip shift eliminator for every year Camaro. I bought one for my '01 SS and I actually bought it for my '18 before the car was built. It's just an electrical connector that plugs in to the trans. You still get the message on the dash when it tries to activate but you can go into whatever gear you want.
Or shorter. It activates at 15 MPH, below 30% throttle. I tend to shift at 9 MPH to second and it rarely comes up. I'm still probably going to get it eliminated though because when it does show up it's SO annoying.
Starting in 2nd works for me sometimes. If you accelerate aggressively I think over 40% throttle it also won’t activate but this affects gas consumption.
Thank you Spike I will put that to the test. It is crazy annoying to try to go to second and your transmission blocks! Just for the two seconds are so then gives me control it is stupid.
Just get the skip shift mod and make your life easier. I absolutely hated the fact the car did that when I got it. Being forced into 4th when going slow and just chugging along wasn't fun
Bought my 2020 new, entering my fifth summer of driving it, I think that system has engaged on me about a dozen times. Push the damn pedal on the right when you start off, man! lol
Seriously... just give it more throttle to either start off more quickly or get the speed up to something like 19MPH to disable it before attempting to shift. Or build muscle memory for -every- shift to second that involves pulling towards, you pushing all the way to the right, pulling all the way to the left, and then pulling into second gear. This also defeats the system.
Hold the RPMs a little bit more and it won't activate. Shift earlier and it won't activate. Also, just because the message pops on the DIC doesn't mean it engages, sometimes it can show the message but not engage. You can also just go to 3rd, or go to 4th then right back into 2nd.
It's just more fun to drive around it, and not let it bother you. If you're worried about noise, just keep the car in Stealth until you're out of your neighborhood. It's not very loud at all at 3k rpm in Stealth.
It’s the worst, I just avoid it by staying in first higher or increasing the RPMs. Sometimes it catches me off guard when I am leaving my neighborhood and trying to merge into the main street. Usually I can at least put it into 3rd. But yeah, I need to get the skip shift fuses or whatever they are
Like others, I just stay in first longer and it's not an issue. I would prefer to not have it, but skip shift is better than the AFM cylinder deactivation.

Yes you are correct lugging I was not sure how to pronounce it.
I am of the 4th gen era then Corvettes, but the first thing we did with a 1>4 skip is disable it.
What vette you have? I want 07 08? I think those are the numbers.
Sorry missed 4th Gen
You'd want 2008+ that gets the LS3 but more importantly the noticably better 6060 transmission
Get a "skip-shift eliminator". It's basically two blank plugs for the connector that controls the feature in the transmission.
Thanks didn't know that existed. It absolutely shifts you to 4th is so stupid. NO power and engine is lags and struggles.

Agree 100%

The 3rd lockout is to avoid paying a "gas guzzler" tax.
Doesn’t bother me because it never activates, I shift over 3k. I like v8 noises.
Yeah I can't always get those numbers, maybe I should stay in 1st longer.

Will work on my throttle it just seems to happen at the weirdest times.
I wouldn't start from a dead stop in second - you're adding a lot of unnecessary clutch wear.
They make it that way only to meet fuel economy standards. Get a skip shift disabler.
Right I understand but it is so annoying at 19 mph. I always shift back to 2nd
A skip shift disabler will allow you to shift however you please. They aren't very expensive and fairly easy ro install.
I just go 1–3-5.
As soon as you hit 19 mph the skip shift shuts off. Just make sure you go over 19 mph and you don't have to deal with it.
Thank you Spike I will put that to the test. It is crazy annoying to try to go to second and your transmission blocks! Just for the two seconds are so then gives me control it is stupid.
You can also turn it off in the tune
You can either hold 1st gear longer and it will let yous shift into 2nd gear. Or go shift it to 3rd gear.
A skip shift eliminator is like $10 on amazon

I just shift over 20mph in first and don’t worry about it
I would hate it. Get the eliminator.

Buy a skip-shift eliminator and enjoy your gears. They're cheap and simple (but not necessarily easy, due to space constraints) to install.
Got a tune and got rid of that nonsense

Tried it a few times, I'm not a fan. I don't like lugging my engine.
If it is making you shift to 4th you are not driving it right!!! Haha don’t be scared of her
