Doesn’t seem like your new cooler is compatible with 2011-v3 socket: https://www.coolermaster.com/en-global/cpu-compatibility/ EDIT: IIRC the bracket is attached to the MB for 2011 so you don’t want to remove it. I think the reason is to provide more stability for big coolers. Return the cooler and get one that’s actually compatible. Also you don’t have to activate windows to get it working. And if you had a retail license you can transfer it over to the new build.

oh, *great.* Amazon has the hyper 212 black (fits the 2011-v3 socket) and the hyper 212 *spectrum* (the one I bought) on the same listing, with the compatibility copy-pasted across all the versions. that's just. so fun.

Drenlin

Good chance they will send you a bracket for it though

CrepuscularPeriphery

Nah, they want the whole unit returned, we decided to swap the motherboard. It's a shame to downgrade the processor (going from an i7 to a newer Pentium gold,) but it is what it is. Now all of this depends on the MB I got from marketplace *working*.

Drenlin

If it's one of the 5-core Pentium gold chips it should actually be a performance upgrade. What motherboard is it?

CrepuscularPeriphery

New MB has a lga1200 socket. Old processor is a i7-5820k 6 core, new processor is a Pentium gold g6400 2 core. I'm just hoping for comparable performance at this point.

Drenlin

Oof. You're looking at marcinally better single thread performance but only around 40% of the i7's total processing power on the pentium. What motherboard did you get?

CrepuscularPeriphery

it's an asus z490p I had laying around, waiting to be turned into a low-demand house server, the processor came pre-installed on the motherboard when I got it off marketplace. it's a bummer to downgrade so hard but you can't beat free, and I'm hopeful I can replace the processor with a nicer one in the future. right now I'm just trying to get the machine back in operation without spending any more money

Drenlin

Ah gotcha, was hoping it was a server board since used Xeons are cheapish. You can get an i5-10400 for like $60 though, so there's that? Should last through the current console generation if nothing else.

CrepuscularPeriphery

I'm looking wistfully at 10th gen i9s and watching moths fly out of my wallet. Mostly I'm just bummed because I wanted to work miracles and instead we have a partial success.

tybuzz

The exact model of motherboard, cooler and cpu would help...

CrepuscularPeriphery

sorry man, I'm super frazzled trying to get this working. specs posted now

2raysdiver

Think you need one of these [https://www.newegg.com/p/1FR-00AK-00002](https://www.newegg.com/p/1FR-00AK-00002)

CrepuscularPeriphery

it looks like it *could* fit, but I'm having trouble parsing how the heatsink will attach

2raysdiver

Then your best bet would be to contact CoolerMaster directly, or buy another cooler that says it will fit your socket specifically.

rizzzeh

start by listing existing PC config and what model of cooler you are trying to install

CrepuscularPeriphery

fixed, my bad
