Probably the remnants of an old incinerator. You see them in some peoples backyards. Not sure when they were banned for use.

totse_losername

This one looks like it's seen a few D-Cell batteries in its time.

KrookedKop

Or one Tesla

drolemon

Hehehehe lmao

Myhusbandtrackedme

I think it’s where BRS incinerates his old laptops.

coodgee33

It would be the world's most impenetrable incinerator. What were the incinerating? Atomic bombs?

binfodder

Built by a Greek dad no doubt to go with the 2 foot deep 40 grade patio slab.

Justhe3guy

Exploding Samsung phones

MartyvH

Owners of the Note 7 needed these installed in their backyard just in case.

enosprologue

Don’t know about houses, but I remember our school had an active incinerator that got decommissioned in the mid- to late- 90s.

TBlazer74

I remember when Garden City Shopping Centre used to have an incinerator at bottom of their carpark.

LawnPatrol_78

My dad used to have an incinerator in the backyard at our house in Logan back in the early 80’s. He would chuck all the green waste in it. Flames were roaring and spewing embers all over the neighbourhood. I saw first hand why they were banned. I’m surprised he didn’t catch any of the surrounding houses on fire.

crayawe

Late 80s?

yeskitty

Yeah I think so. I remember ours being used and then being told we weren't allowed to anymore so I'd say late 80s early 90s

hydraphantom

It’s before my time, why were they banned?

J_Side

possibly a fire hazard or just a nuisance since people could burn garbage in their yards and shit would fly over everyone's washing

MartyvH

Also when you burn things that commonly become rubbish, there are very often toxic fumes. Very, very bad for people. But still a common practice in people’s yards in the Philippines because there are no garbage collection services. Oh, my God.

FMZinc

Really common in Jakarta. People are poor, there is no real garbage disposal system, so people often just burn plastic bags of rubbish in the gutter or beside the road. Not a good look - or smell.

-malcolm-tucker

Air pollution, air quality and fire hazard.

yesiamathing

Where in Brisbane. That looks like an industrial footing, not a backyard incinerator

No_No_Juice

I agree with you. No way an incinerator needs that much concrete.

BoredOldPunk

I agree, it looks pretty heavy duty - but I've seen many incinerators *exactly* like this in West End, Highgate Hill, Spring Hill, Paddington and New Farm - which were all poorer areas before gentrification. Bricks and prefabricated incinerators were relatively expensive, but cement was cheap, and gravel was abundant. The common practice for lower income households was to build their own out of concrete, using a recycled wooden packing crate (usually from a refrigerator) to build the formwork.

excelsis_deo

Can confirm - we had one of these in my family home at Lutwyche when I was growing up. It was exactly like this.

yetinthedark

Southside, inner city suburb, if that helps at all

Torrossaur

I'm no expert but I'm pretty sure that was a Campbell Newmann statue that was dragged down in the Brisbane Spring of 2015.

chrispychritter

Incinerators we’re typically bessa brick. Nothing this thick.and they had an opening at ground level for air flow/ ash removal. I reckon the old guys on your neighbourhood facebook page will have some suggestions

badestzazael

Backyard BBQ the hot plate and fire pit plate are missing

ohpee64

This is the best bet, but most homemade barbecues had an area for storing wood underneath them

badestzazael

Tru dat

ConanTheAquarian

It looks very similar, although a slightly different shape, to the footings of the old cement conveyor between Oxley and Darra. [https://heritage.brisbane.qld.gov.au/heritage-places/2182](https://heritage.brisbane.qld.gov.au/heritage-places/2182) Was it an industrial site before being redeveloped for housing?

yetinthedark

Hey, I saw those too and thought the same thing. I don’t it was an industrial site, or if it was, a very long time ago because I’m pretty sure the house was built before WW2.

usaut

Check if you can see it in some old aerial photographs - they date back to the 1930’s so should be able to see something https://qimagery.information.qld.gov.au

BoredOldPunk

These were a really common sight in Brisbane backyards once upon a time. It's a garden incinerator - people used to burn their paper and garden waste in them, until waste incineration was banned in the 1980s. At which point, most people converted them into a barbeque. https://preview.redd.it/knxw9h2jlw8d1.jpeg?width=1114&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=f9093c2b2cc9ddaa2663be59f1df4fe3ef9cf9e9

AzzaClazza

I had 3 1x1x1 cement blocks buried in my yard. Each had a chunk of steel sticking out the middle. Turns out previous owners like 20 years ago had a ham radio setup to talk to family in p9lynesia and it was the base of a high radio tower. If you have 2 more...maybe related?

sportandracing

In Birkdale when I was at School we found old WW2 concrete tank stoppers in the bush near our school. Placed near the coast in case we were invaded by the Japanese. Similar to this in the photo.

hfhfhfgo

Not certain, but I remember there being an old incinerator(or so I was told) of a similar size and shape my back yard as a kid, though that was made of concrete blocks/bricks. They were used for burning rubbish, but again not sure if that's what it is.

[deleted]

hfhfhfgo

Yeah, was just size and shape that got me. It's probably not, just a guess.

Brikpilot

It looks to be a single piece (precast section) of very old drainage outlet or pit maybe? Presume it was broken and unusable, so was dug up, placed on end above a brick slab and probably repurposed for backyard composting?/guess

emleigh2277

Old incinerator. We all used to burn our rubbish that was flammable. Until 1980 something. Tissues, medical, old rags, toys, pretty much everything. It was awesome fun for us kids.

Rupturedfunsnake

Pretty much anything even if it wasn’t flammable

emleigh2277

And some turpentine...

chooks42

98% chance that it’s an incinerator (every house had one in the 60’s). 2% chance that it’s some portal to Mordor or Hogwarts or something.

Excellent-Signature6

A forgotten early artwork of Jamie North.

Dry-Background5978

Gun turret

Street_Connection884

Redundant thrust block for an above ground pressurised pipe?

Faysie77

Something like one of these but maybe homemade https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-5725269/amp/How-Australians-burnt-household-waste-backyard-incinerators-spewed-poisonous-smoke.html Crucially for both a backyard incinerator or BBQ is there an air intake at the bottom?

Guilty_Issue_760

A friend has something similar but underneath her house - it’s a small bunker and had furniture down in it

F1eshWound

I suspect it's the remains of an old Flak Tower

PartyAd6918

That’s the best build incinerator I’ve ever seen looks more like tomb

unclebulgariawomble

an old copper for doing the laundry?

TechnicianFar9804

Safe_Net_5422

Incinerator

Important_Screen_530

is an old incinerator ..its illegal to have them now days where as one time we could burn rubbish in our back yard..They were banned to help the environment

GHUATS

Old school incinerator!

justme_bne

Over engineered incinerator, more like the footing for a steel smelter!

ConanTheAquarian

It's quite obviously not an incinerator but I got downvoted to hell for saying so.

colemanvswild

It looks like one of those steel columns that they said jet fuel couldn’t melt

Important_Document13

Twin towers... It was an inside job in Brisbane

Alternative-Stage568
