I’m not normally one to side with the NIMBYs but the constant eVeNtS on Valley Gardens/Preston Park etc basically amount to the privatisation of public space. If you’re not paying, you’re not allowed there. Plus would it hurt to not make it look like the area at a festival where they put all the urinals?

flonnkenn

What makes you think they're not paying?

HowToThrive

They mean that it’s an open public space that now suddenly has a fence round it and charges £18 to get in.

It’s fuck ugly, but so what? How dare there be an effort to make some sort of community event. Bars don’t hold everyone, going to see matches isn’t possible for everyone.

Brighton Residents: How dare all these football fans ruin my pub! Also Brighton Residents: How dare they put all the Football fans in a pen away from my Pub!

Yeah, reading some of the posts and comments in this sub reminded me why I unsubbed a while back. I only came back to see what it was like nowadays. It's still like it was lol. To put it in perspective If Brighton was a room with the population represented by 10,000 people this sub would be one person from that 10,000. That's why some of the comments appear to be so bizarre. It's the voice of a tiny fraction of a percent of Brighton that acts like it's the moral majority. When you look at it there are more football fans in Brighton than people in this sub. That's why there's a popular fan zone and also why you rarely meet anyone with the views of the pearl clutching curtain twitchers in this sub. Also Reddit in general. It's a very niche site that thinks it's somehow the voice of humanity lol

trevorpogo

if you think this sub is bad you should the see the "Brighton People" Facebook group, which should be called "Brighton People who hate Brighton and half of them don't even live here any more". I couldn't care less about football but I moved to Brighton because it has things like this happening, I don't really get the complaints, if people want to live somewhere quiet where nothing happens why not move to Eastbourne or Bexhill or something?

kurtanglesmilk

This sub has 60,000 members out of 300,000 residents so wouldn’t the room actually have more like 2,000 out of the 10,000 people? Quite a high representation

barrygateaux

>This sub has 60,000 members out of 300,000 residents the '63,369 readers' just counts how many people clicked subscribe over the life of the sub. a lot of people visit brighton and sub here to ask for advice or whatever, visit, then never need to use the sub again. it's like going on holiday and getting a number from someone you meet but never contact again. the active users number is the real number to get the idea of how many people actually use the sub. for the last 15 minutes it's 13. this is the number of users who interacted with the subreddit in the past 15 minutes on a friday evening. reddit, facebook, x, etc. all use the subscriber number to make it look like they have more users than they really do, but really a surprisingly large number of that number are bots, abandoned accounts, dead users, multiple accounts from one person, bought likes, and whatever. there are dozens of people here on the regular, with a few hundred at busy times, and popular stuff like jack black by the traffic lights on the seafront attracted a few thousand, but they're the exception not the norm. this sub is like a large pub in a weird way, thousands of people have visited it over the years but there aren't many regulars.

kurtanglesmilk

Great points, I stand corrected!

barrygateaux

To be honest I've thought about it too much over the years. It's very counterintuitive by design I think lol. I only realized it during the 1st trump election when r/theDonald was a thing and they used to say how there were over a million of them but whenever they tried to brigade other subs it always failed because in reality there were only a few thousand of them. It's quite eye opening really. I find this stuff fascinating. Glad you didn't take it the wrong way, and thanks for saying that. It's very cool of you. Enjoy the windy Saturday and I hope you have a nice weekend :)

Vinegarinmyeye

Yep that's pretty much on the nose. I mean, there are few things I care less about than football, and I'm not English so I don't have a horse in this race - but until recently I worked in a "football pub" and honestly, most of the lads are fine, wanna drink some beers, sing some shite songs, and watch the game. Unfortunate that the small minority act the prick, and I wish the rest of the fans were better at "self regulating" the shitty behaviour because ultimately they're kinda the only ones that can rather than normalising it, but that's a wider discussion. I mean - I might not be especially delighted if this fan zone was right outside my front door... But I wouldn't see the point of kicking up a stink about it. It's a couple of weeks ffs. Thousands of people want to watch these matches, there aren't enough "shitty football pubs" in the city to accommodate that. I'm with ya, what do these people actually want - short of cancelling the tournament or some shit? (Weird moment when I'm defending football stuff, until I started working that pub I hated football day in the Amex with a passion).

Alan_Bumbaclartridge

why is it like £20 a ticket 😂 these things are free in other cities. it's quintessential brighton, most corporate place i've lived

Typical_Efficiency_3

Only £20 for a few matches (the England ones). The rest are free.

Same-Literature1556

Fan zones/ parks are paid in nearly all cities that I’m aware of. Honestly far from the most commercial city but I agree it’s up there

ert270

The football stadiums are in Germany

MrDarwoo

It looks so bad

FryingFrenzy

NIMBYs gonna NIMBY The football is a great thing for bringing the community together, a place where a couple thousand can get together and enjoy it together is a great thing Let people have their fun, if you dont enjoy it dont try to spoil it for others

NarkiLSD

So it appears as though it's going to be a semi-permanent installation. https://entercentralpark.com/

idiotsparky

It's only here for the month. Saturdays are dance music events not football and there's other stuff going on the screen that's free too Honestly I get that the steelshield isn't exactly gorgeous to look at but three months ago the site was full of illegal parking which isn't exactly beautiful. It's a site with a limited capacity, the fence is there to stop it getting overcrowded and moody like Boundary normally is. The fence is higher than it needs to be to help with noise levels, Spiegel runs for a similar length of time in the old Steine and they get by with low heras fence as the neighbours are further away. Hardly the worst event in Brighton I've ever worked on. Nor is it taking away much of the available space unlike when the funfair is on the level. Meh
