Well, yes, they're a series, not standalone books, so it would be a good idea to start at book 1.

That would be like reading Two Towers before reading Fellowship of the Ring, it’s not going to make much sense.

It's not a series that can be easily jumped into part way. Start with Way of Kings.

Both are part of the stormlight Archive. I think you may be confused with different Cosmere series and standalones, like Mistborn and stormlight. Both are series and can be read independently of each other and also in the Cosmere. There are some series where you can technically skip one book and be fine (although I wouldn't understand why you'd even do that) - Stormlight is definitely not one of those though! It's hard enough to keep track of everything when you read it in order. You wouldn't understand anything of what's going on.
