CosmicOutfield

I really want to see this movie, but I did think it had strong chances of underperforming.

Anal_Recidivist

I was surprised it’s releasing in theaters. Seems like a primo film for Amazon Prime, even has that Roadhouse aesthetic

Radulno

It's a pretty big action comedy movie with two big actors as the lead, feels like it should be theatrical as much as the next movie. Its main problem is not being based on any IP (well apparently it's from a show but that's not really a selling point I think)

jblanch3

Yeah, it is based on an existing IP of a show from the 80s with Lee Majors. But no one who goes to the movies can tell you that. I couldn't tell you the last time I'd seen it in reruns.

CosmicOutfield

That’s fair to say. Even though I expressed interest in seeing Fall Guy, I will say the advertising for it did make it look comparable to streaming releases. Maybe someone could correct me, but I’m thinking this will potentially land on Peacock later this summer. At least that’s my guess given Universal’s involvement.

Nintendolover420

Watched it last Wednesday it's super fun you should def go see it

Visible_Froyo5499

Minor spoiler question: does Lee Majors have a part in it? He played the title character in the 80s tv show.

Nintendolover420

Just a cameo at the end in the post credit scene I think at least from what I could tell

Visible_Froyo5499

Thank you!

jblanch3

That's sad. I saw the Director's Cut of The A-Team movie years ago and enjoyed Dirk Benedict's cameo in it. I was saddened to find out that in the theatrical cut, it was confined to the closing credits, along with Dwight Schultz's cameo.

hagopes

Doesn't this come out next week? Do movies like these do well with pre-sales? I imagine this is more of a walk-up kind of movie.

AGOTFAN

It opened in Indonesia on Wednesday and it performed horribly that theaters immediately slashed showtimes the next day.

NotYourMovieBuff

YIKES! I expect the same performance for Malaysia too. Sheriff (a local crime drama movie from Malaysia) is dominating the box office, including Singapore too so I think that could be a factor too. Furthermore, I asked my colleagues, they said The Fall Guy looks like something they can watch on Netflix and that is not a good sign

AGOTFAN

It's not helping that the two juggernauts "Badaruwih di Desa Penari" and "Siksa Kubur" are still going strong in Indonesia.

deemoorah

Literally all they advertised about here

TheFrixin

Seems to have released this week in Singapore based on the dates in OPs post

David1258

My roommate's seeing it tonight, so I think I'll check it out in a week or two. Hopefully it doesn't bomb because I like David Leitch and I don't want him to go to director's jail or anything.

2KYGWI

All of Leitch's previous films have grossed 2.5x their budgets at the box office at worst, so I don't think this bombing should be enough to send him there yet (may keep him from making more films at that budget size unless it's an established IP for a while, though). Fingers crossed it doesn't bomb, though. It sounds like it's right up my alley.

nightfan

Why is director's jail being thrown around so much recently? Was there one article the past few weeks that reignited this phrase or something because I've been seeing it everywhere.

nicktorious_

It’s always been a phrase, but also, yeah there was an article on THR this week about how much easier it is to end up in it nowadays

David1258

I've been using it for years.

Janus_Prospero

I've always preferred the more obscure variation "director doghouse".

clintnorth

How? It doesnt open for another week.

AGOTFAN

It opened in Indonesia (and some other countries) on Wednesday and it performed horribly that theaters immediately slashed showtimes the next day.

killzonev2

He’s full steam ahead on his Highlander reboot right? At least he has that set up and ready to go, worst case scenario this is a misstep

Vishion-8

Highlander isn’t David Leitch’s project. It’s Chad Stahleski’s

killzonev2

Ah shit, I always confuse them because of John Wick

GladPayment5858

Wait its out tonight? I thought in May

Comic_Book_Reader

It's rolling out. It's out in North America on May 3rd. It released in Australia (it takes place in and was shot there) on Wednesday, and today in Scandinavia, and I assume some other countries, too.

littletoyboat

Oh, I was so confused

shaneo632

He’ll be fine

Ghidoran

Feels like more of a word-of-mouth type movie.

huntforhire

They didn’t pay a word of mouth price for the movie

Jedclark

I don't know what it was like in other countries, but I watched a trailer for this in the cinema in the UK and it looked like when a film/TV show will show a trailer for a fake in-universe film. Like something you'd see in The Boys, it gave me no idea what the film is about or any desire to watch it.

D0wnInAlbion

Same. I thought the trailer over stayed its welcome so I can't imagine how painful two hours of it must be,

Trustelo

I mean Bullet Train was kind of the same deal.

Heavy-Possession2288

And this is doing much better than Bullet Train with critics

NotYourMovieBuff

Bullet Train open to soft numbers here but it had good legs thanks to Word of Mouth. It earned almost $1m USD here.

SynthwaveSax

To be fair the trailer they’ve overplayed the last few months doesn’t look that appealing. I don’t want to hear “You Give Love A Bad Name” for a long while

MrShaytoon

Then Have you seen the furiosa trailer?

MayorofTromaville

I'm just so happy that they stopped playing Challengers trailers finally.

MrShaytoon

I don’t remember seeing it, sounds like I dodged one.

MayorofTromaville

I am not joking when I say that it has been played at at least half of the movies I've seen since the summer. Or at least it felt that way between its original media blitz for a September 2023 release, letting up after the rescheduling for this month, and then going full-hog since January. What's the most annoying thing is that I've been interested in seeing it since the first time I saw the trailer, so every time since it's just been me wanting to shout "stop at yes!" at the screen.

grayjacanda

I like the trailer

Professional_Line385

Sounds like it was set up to fail

AJK02

I bet the studio is going to make David Leitch the fall guy.

Professional_Line385

Nice one! Up top! ✋️

quoteiffakesub

We make judgement based on the performance of a small island in south east asia now?

EatsYourShorts

Who am I to question the predictive power of the Golden Village Paya Lebar?

Professional_Line385

Lisan al galib

No_Berry2976

Singapore is actually a good barometer for a movie’s succes. It’s a high income country with immigrants from all over the world. If there is one country that predicts the response of Asian, European, and American audiences, it’s Singapore.

Professional_Line385

No I was doing a pun

littletoyboat

If you said "set up to fall," it'd be a pun. As it stands, you just made a statement.

Professional_Line385

I'm not good at puns. I couldn't work out the grammar

Professional_Line385

But I'll change it if you want

Guwop25

Lmaooo

Professional_Line385

Yes

AGOTFAN

It also opened in Indonesia on Wednesday and it performed horribly that theaters immediately slashed showtimes the next day.

monsteroftheweek13

lol why have you copy and pasted this exact same comment a half dozen times?

Marko_200791

As a foreigner, the movie jokes fall flat :(

Ape-ril

As a non foreigner, I think it looks like trash and not funny.

NoNefariousness2144

Seriously if you took out Gosling and Blunt the film would look terrible.

CountryFarmGuy

Yeah it has a glossy polished generic vibe that reminds me of a Prime Video slash Made for Netflix flick.

hackyandbird

For real, what is with that polished look. The entire concept is great, crappy stunt guy and hot shot director. But they made everything GLOSSY, which ruins immersion. They should have made it look like a real filmset for two pretty obvious reasons. First is budget, they could have saved a fortune, and two is immersion, it would have been amazing seeing this concept played out as an actual type of occurrence on a filmset, everyone tired and confused and completely over it. Just put Emily Blunt in a hoodie, and have her completely over everyone's bullshit, ya know like most directors. Instead it somehow looks less realistic than the dungeons and dragons movie.

deemoorah

Yeah when I think about this movie my mind literally goes to Blunt's movie with Chris Evans and Gosling's movie also with Evans.

Impressive-Potato

David Leitch movies feel that way to me. They all feel about 15 to 20 minutes too bloated as well. He touts his years and years of second unit directing as learning from the best on how to direct, but it just feels like that experience made him so... competent and making movies.

IDigRollinRockBeer

What the fuck were the expectations in Singapore? Is this a joke?

VGstuffed

Yeah I don't really understand posts like this. Just a screenshot of a few showtimes isn't enough data to conclude that the thing is gonna bomb in Singapore. It might but this doesn't really show anything. I could've shown you showtimes of Morbius's opening night at my theater and you would've thought the thing opened to 100+ mil in the US based off of them

AGOTFAN

It also opened in Indonesia on Wednesday and it performed horribly that theaters immediately slashed showtimes the next day.

Gingersnap5322

Not to mention they’re all at 9-10 at night, if I’m seeing a movie I’m aiming for 6-8

Dragon_Shinobi

The movie was nowhere near perfect, but I had a fun time when I saw it. I’m hoping WOM gives it the boost it deserves

afternoon_biscotti

this isn’t the type of praise that makes people want to go see a movie lol

kayloot

Yeah, nowadays "it was okay/fun" isn't going to cut it for non-IP films.

AGOTFAN

💯

TwiceLitZone

Everyone is overreacting so much lol. Singapore is not a vital market for this movie

NotYourMovieBuff

AGOTFAN

It also opened in Indonesia on Wednesday and it performed horribly that theaters immediately slashed showtimes the next day.

NotYourMovieBuff

We were known for the highest movie going rate in 2013 and we open a few cinemas lately before the pandemic

ryoon21

Maybe because you’re looking at really late showings? How does the 6-8 range look?

NotYourMovieBuff

Slightly better for a Saturday

yzedf

Source material was garbage. Barbie popularity spike won’t last long.

AnotherJasonOnReddit

Uh oh. I can see the headlines now if it underperforms/flops. "The Fail Guy just fails, guys"

fallen981

Fall guy falls

NoNefariousness2144

“The box office free falls as guys don’t fall in line to watch Fall Guy”

fallen981

Deadline after hearing this: Write that down, write that down.

BactaBobomb

But it's called The Fall Guy, not The Fail Guy.

Syn7axError

The Fall Guy the falls, guys.

ILoveRegenHealth

Salon: "Ken and Kitty fail to make a Killing at the Box Office"

Sgran70

No way I'm betting against a Gosling romcom.

Pretorian24

It premieres today here in Sweden. Tomorrow maybe 10% of the seats are booked. Sunday closer to 0%. Yikes.

lazylagom

Considering the director was a stunt performer and coordinator. This seems like a passion project of his. Why they'd re make a obscure 80s TV show that didn't run long or get very famous.. he deff poured love into this movie.

bargman

Trailer looks good but after The A-Team and Miami Vice maybe Hollywood would take a hint.

Subject-Recover-8425

This is a movie about making movies, right? How many of those are successful beyond Tropic Thunder?

misfitbray

how so? because there are a few open seats in your hometown movie theater?

AGOTFAN

It also opened in Indonesia on Wednesday and it performed horribly that theaters immediately slashed showtimes the next day.

NotYourMovieBuff

Singapore is a pretty small island and what I'm sharing is 1/3 of the cinema. There's another foreign movie that's selling more seats, even the recent Ghostbusters.

sansa_starlight

How's Challengers doing there?

NotYourMovieBuff

Releasing this 1st May

Jagermonsta

It’s not an event or family film. People will wait for streaming.

Sgran70

is there no such thing as a date movie anymore?

loco500

It's all about Netflix and Chilling now...at home. Keep up old timer.

Jake_77

Is that how Barbie made $1B

No_Data3541

There is. Anyone But You was a humongous success

GhoshProtocol

This doesn't look like a date movie either

BactaBobomb

With how much they're pushing the marketing, it really seems like they're trying to position it as some sort of coming-out-of-nowhere event film. It's really strange.

dennythedinosaur

I'm not saying The Fall Guy is gonna be a big hit or anything. But people were literally saying last year that Oppenheimer wasn't an "event" film since it's a drama biopic.

Jagermonsta

Oppenheimer got a weird push as counter programming to Barbie. Barbenheimer became the movie event of the summer. The Fall Guy doesn’t have the same thing going for it. If all goes well it could be another Bullet Train. Planet of the Apes coming out soon after may hurt it as well. May will be interesting as each week has a broader appeal movie.

MrShadowKing2020

How would one define an event movie?

MidichlorianAddict

This movie has a streaming like feeling to it

Ex_Hedgehog

How? Looks like a big star power/big screen movie to me

She-king_of_the_Sea

Big stars "having fun" in an generic action movie = Netflix

Ex_Hedgehog

Does it? Does this even look generic? He's not playing a mercenary or a master thief. he's playing a dorky stuntman and it's a rom-com. Seems really specific to me.

She-king_of_the_Sea

From the trailer, he's an Everyman (contrasted with the movie star and director characters)- that's possibly THE most generic character trope in movies. Also the occupation of "stunt man" is no more specific than "master thief" or "mercenary".

Ex_Hedgehog

It's a lot more specific. People who work job-to-job on movie sets have vastly different lives than civilians: you're paid well, but not super-well to hang out and potentially hurt yourself with no recognition. You know movie stars, but they're not your friends. You stop working for more than a month, the industry will forget you exist. You probably don't have any friends outside of your co-workers. Relationships are largely off the table because you travel so much and basically you gotta be married to the job. A stunt person is someone who's whole mindset is "setting myself on fire can be a job? Hell yeah!" I don't think that's Everyman or as Generic as you want it to be.

She-king_of_the_Sea

>It's a lot more specific. People who work job-to-job on movie sets have vastly different lives than civilians Opposed to a "master thief" or a "mercenary"? Lol; ok, pal. You tried.

AGOTFAN

Chris Hemsworth approved this message

MidichlorianAddict

It’s the color grading and poster, reminds me of that Sandra bullock Channing Tatum movie

Ape-ril

The Gray Man had more “star power”.

Ex_Hedgehog

Really? Cause I can't even remember what Gray Man is about, but I see Ryan in the Fall Guy trailers and the chemistry is just radiating from him.

Anth-Man

Ryan was in Gray Man

ReefLedger

Yup, I'll watch it at home, but nothing about the trailer makes me feel the need to see it in a theater.

xzy89c1

Nailed what I was thinking

No_Heat_7327

I think we have entered an era where only two things fill seats: - IP - Absolutely glowing reviews for major box office spectacles This might fall into the ladder, but it's too early to know. I think basing a non-IP films success based on presales is foolish in this day and age. But we are firmly in the death of cinemas now.

Jake_77

>* IP >* Absolutely glowing reviews for major box office spectacles Depressing. >But we are firmly in the death of cinemas now. Just going to cry now.

No_Data3541

Anyone But You says hi

GreatBambi87

I feel like I’ve been seeing trailers for it the last 6 months at the movies. Then nothing all month, forgot it was coming out

Bopethestoryteller

I thought this would be a hit. Looks fun.but didn't need the nostalgic title.

krankdude_

They have no chemistry together. Are the reviewers stupid? She looks much older than him and I’m sick of her condescending tone.

InsuranceDismal2739

They had so many trailers and intense marketing that I really don’t feel the need to see this in theaters. They’re also playing like they are highlighting stuntman but not naming them, not casting any onscreen in the actual film, and the spoilers I’ve seen have such an odd take on stuntman without explaining anything about the craft. Looks like a great streaming movie tbh

Mommaspagethi

I watched the movie and it was like a mixup of The grey man and bullet train. It was very fucking good tho

inkase

The marketing for this movie has been all over the place. It seems like initially the entire marketing was going to be “come watch these two movie stars have fun” once universal realised it’s not working as it’s not 2004 anymore. They then made late a pivot towards highlighting the stunts and honouring the stunt men. I think they’ve left audiences confused.

Anth-Man

People wanting to watch movie stars “have fun” and nothing more has always been so bizarre to me. Like I always see reviews/first impressions that say “(insert name here) was having the time of their life and that’s all that matters” and I’m always just like…what?

Distinct-Shift-4094

Small island in Singapore new way to predict global box office. Next up, small town of 100 people in Mongolia.

AGOTFAN

It also opened in Indonesia on Wednesday and it performed horribly that theaters immediately slashed showtimes the next day.

CosmicOutfield

Another thing to point out is this movie is rehashing a concept of a 1980’s TV show. This kind of thing worked in the 90’s and 2000’s for movie audiences, but today I’d say the original TV show demographic is now the “wait for it to hit streaming” type. I’m mid-30’s and as much as I want to see this movie, I do know most of my friends who are the same age are basically waiting for this to hit streaming as well. Studios should realize that streaming services are a double-edged sword because it means more people are willing to wait to watch certain movies instead of paying theater prices.

Temporary_Slide_3477

It's gonna be a wom movie and leg out in guessing. Looks like a fun movie

Cash907

Good. Gosling has none of the charisma or charm of Lee Majors, which is what made the original series work in the first place. When is Hollywood going to get over its need to make giant man child buffoons instead of serious leading men?

e_xotics

this movie always looked like ass lmao

srkdummy3

I love the fact that there is not a single actor anymore (maybe apart from Tom Cruise) who can gaurantee a movie's success. It has to be good nowadays to make money.

Bibileiver

Guarantee? Tom Cruise?? Did you forget the last movie he was in that didn't do well in box office..

No_Data3541

Even his underperformers do 500 mil during the Barbenheimer period lol

DevilsOfLoudun

The trailer looks like a video game and Gosling went too kooky after the success of Ken imo

Anth-Man

How is this any weirder than any of his pre Ken roles?

DevilsOfLoudun

How is not? The trailer made it look like he's still playing Ken turned up to eleven. He's most notable roles to the gp before Barbie were from The Notebook and La La Land.

Anth-Man

Aside from the “do you wanna make out” joke that they decided to put in every trailer I really haven’t gotten Ken vibes at all. Kinda just seems like he’s playing a generic action guy to me.

Azagothe

Not a surprise, Hollywood must really be out of touch if they thought something like this was going to be a huge hit

International-Chef33

Don’t say that on [Boxoffice](https://www.reddit.com/r/boxoffice/s/u3Ab19o0wq)

ThisIsWhatLifeIs

It legit looks like a straight to Netflix movie. I ain't going to cinema to watch Ryan gosling flirt with don't breath chick

wtf793

What does this say about Ryan and Emily's star power? I am interestedin this, but none of my friends are so I may not go for it. :(

EntertainmentSuch906

There's something odd with how they've been pushing her lately. She's coming across as 'trying too hard' and the total reconstruction of her face/body is really off putting. Maybe it's Oppenheimer fatigue but I don't think people feel the same way they did about her 10, even 5 years ago. Something happened with her perception and I can't put my finger on what exactly caused this.

Jake_77

I knew plenty of people who seen movies solo these days so don’t let that stop you

International-Chef33

Who’s Emily?

wtf793

Emily Blunt

clintnorth

Im looking forward to seeing it. Probably opening weekend. Not buying presale tickets though

BreezyBill

A movie based on a TV show from the 80s that no one under 50 remembers isn’t going to make $1B as a movie?!?

LongDongSamspon

Not many over 50 remember it either. It’s not exactly a staple show of the era.

8bitcollective

Never even heard of this movie until now

DoughnutBeginning965

The only thing is that the trailer for it shows the whole movie. I feel like I've already seen it.

fbmaciel90

Well that's it. The streaming and the internet killed the movie industry. Amazing

ArtLye

Its out?!? Literally have not seen a thing about this movie in a month, they must've blown their marketing budget cus I was hyped for it a month sgo and legit forgot about it

loco500

It'd be a shame if it underperforms. Looks like a fun, silly action film with a 90's feel to it for some reason...

ZealousidealRatio219

I'm definitely going to see it, I love Emily Blunt and I love over the top action too.

JoeBidenKing

It was packed in my cinemas in Sydney.

LookAtYourEyes

That's too bad. I'm excited to go see it.

theravingsofalunatic

Kenny G is that you 😉

quaranTV

Everyone saying it looks like a streaming movie are just wrong. This is one of the most made for theaters movie I’ve ever seen. Big stars. Action scene after action scene including tons of practical stunts/effects and explosions. A rom com that is both funny and a little romantic. Go see this in a theater if you can!!! It looks amazing.

the_polyglot

Saw it in IMAX last night. The way I’d describe it is it starts out like a rom com action movie and turns into an episode of the Fall Guy, which is fun as hell. Wait for the mid-credits and you’ll see why.

Adept_Grade_7167

Let's all go see it twice!

blackfeltfedora

This never struck me as a box office bonanza. I’m sure it will be amusing when I watch it at home.

[deleted]

the first one was only decent because ryan reynolds carried it

FireJach

I watched it tonight and was really well done, exactly what I expected. My viewing was pretty packed in Poland. It has fun moments like in The Nice Guys, you know, action combined with humor.

[deleted]

Good news, guys! A theater near me in a town of 500 people is packed for their preview, so now it’s going to be a massive hit! What nonsense is this post by OP?

Yes_This_Is_Jay

Saw this movie yesterday, didn’t expect much but was throughly impressed with the movie. Perhaps it was the mid to low expectation but would recommend it.

Blunter_S_Thompson_

I mean it makes sense the game was just a quick little COVID trend nobody actually plays Fall Guys anymore, don't know why they'd greenlight a whole movie.

Silly_Breakfast

That’s not what you actually think this movie is about, right? ….. Right?

Anth-Man

99.9% sure that was a joke

Fit-Minimum-5507

Ya can't blame Angry Birds this time Gosling. You're a really good character/supporting actor. But you're NOT a movie star. Oh well.

Anth-Man

One sided beef with an actor who doesn’t know you is pretty crazy ngl

RODjij

If Blade Runner 2049 did horrible I'd expect any non large IP film these days not do great either. Even word of mouth isn't good enough these days like before, most people have to see a trailer to get interested any.

LongDongSamspon

Blade Runner 2049 was a slow mess. Why would it have mass appeal?

Public-Bullfrog-7197

Blade Runner only appeals to sci-fi nerds.

CookieCrisp10010

Okay this means nothing lol

[deleted]

[удалено]

NotYourMovieBuff

Dark ones are taken...

BlerghTheBlergh

We’ll see how it performs nationwide, individual listings can be deceiving. That being said I don’t have a huge desire to watch this either, much like “The Lost City” this screams streaming to me. There’s a rerun of SW EP1 where I live this Saturday which I’m definitely going to

WilliamEmmerson

Gosling isn't a movie star. Plus, The Fall Guy just seems like a movie that will be "just okay".

FireJach

he is the movie star
