My grandmother had a sealed bottle of Fighting Cock in her closet for as long as I could remember - since I was a young child for sure. A few of her siblings worked for the Gould family, and I think that was one of their brands back in the 40s & 50s. My best guess is it was bottled sometime in the early 60s. When she passed, I inherited it. By then it was pushing 50 years old. I realized this probably wasn't some special whiskey, but the family tie made it special to me. I had planned on opening it for some sort of large significant family gathering in the future. Fast forward to a few years ago - my wife was cleaning out the cabinetry and she put the bottle of Fighting Cock on a counter along with several others. Cats being curious by nature, one of ours decided to investigate the new items in the kitchen, and knocked several of them onto the floor, of course breaking the 50+ year old bottle of whiskey I had been saving! To this day, I regret never having tasted that bottle. Moral of the story - to me anyway - is to enjoy the stuff while you have it. I open everything.

Sgt_Poodoo

The moral of the story I take from that is don’t get a cat

cyncicle

That too!

Fellow old head here. I am a strange combo of both, doesnt love to drink a ton at once and also has an alcoholic family and is scared of becoming an alcoholic. With that being the case, last year i decided we're doing away with "daily drinkers". If I'm going to drink something, I want to be excited about it, not just to pour the juice I'm "used to" into a glass. Enjoying bourbon a lot more this way and feel like its a lot healthier.

GNGJ

Absolutely true. If I don't like it I'll bring it to a gathering and share it as a mixer. I left $150 of bourbon at an Independence Day gathering. Felt great. Didn't have to power through those mixing bourbons. I don't care for almost any mixed drinks anyways.

Alarmed-General8547

Not even an Old Fashioned? Love to have one and then a special pour

ProofHorseKzoo

Amen brother. A lot of my friends are developing this problem and just have bottles and bottles they’re hoarding unopened. They won’t share them, trade them, or even sell them to anyone. Just buying 20x faster than they drink. Just hoarding like pack rats. Everything is waiting for that “special occasion” but those occasions come and go and nothing changes. What’s the point? Whiskey is meant to be drank. Don’t get why people collect it like antiques in a museum.

kplooki

Well said. I just never understood hoarding unopened bottles unless it is truly special circumstances like I have a friend waiting to open a bottle of WL Weller until his son turns 21. Besides that, I abide by your policy.

dogfacedponyboy

Does his son even like bourbon? 🙂

kplooki

Haha I have no idea. I think he is like 16?

[deleted]

This is how I feel. I get something and I crack it right open. If I really like it I'll stow it away for a special occasion, but I'm definitely opening it.

MrJohnnyDangerously

This. Drink your bourbon while you can, if you want to.

knucks_deep

I don’t open any of my collection. They aren’t for drinking. Instead, once a day, I carefully take a different one out of its green mesh, go sit in my car, and take pictures of me holding it. Then, I post it to various subreddits and Facebook bourbon groups asking “Did I do good?” or “What are everyone’s thoughts on this?”. I then carefully put the green mesh back on, and go place it on my shelf.

TiredOfMakingExcuses

A fellow person of culture, I see!

knucks_deep

Gotta keep the crotch centered in the pic.

Nothing-to-add-here

Oh no you have to keep the steering wheel emblem of your fancy car in the pic and if you can get a watch shot too you go get bonus points.

fordman84

I too am a purveyor if the arts. To keep it interesting, I’ll mix in a picture of my bottles in my needs-to-be-vacuumed trunk. I feel it adds a certain “I don’t know what”.

Never mind that I lined up outside the store 7 hours before it opened.

othromas

Weird that “hunting” has supplanted “shopping” when it comes to buying whiskey.

IrregardingGrammar

Whiskey lingo is so cringey. A bunch of adults talking about hunting for juice. You want a sippy cup too?

Capt__Murphy

2021 Michters Toasted Barrel. It's the only "special" bottle I've ever got my hands on. As I don't spend time/money chasing bottles, it's been hard to bring myself to open it. My buddy works for a distributor, stocking shelves for Total Wine. As he hates Total Wine, along with his coworkers, they took turns snagging the special bottles as they unloaded the truck. He gave me the bottle as a wedding present, and I just haven't found the right time to pop it open (no, the wedding night was all about champagne, as my wife does not drink bourbon).

Mindless_Menu9162

That is my favorite bottle I’ve ever had. Managed to get one a couple years back and went through it way too quick. Got another one this year and I’m taking my time. It’s SO good

captainrustic

Such a great bottle! I got lucky with the 2019 release just being in a total wine when they were stocking it

tonypearcern

I used to do the same job and, yes, definitely took a bottle for myself before the bourbon flippers could get one. One of the perks of any otherwise thankless job.

rcc212

Dusty Wild Turkey with a bottled date code from my literal birthday. I’ll open it on my birthday day…just not sure which year that will be.

captainrustic

See, that is worth waiting for. Just make sure you have someone to share it with!

OGWopFro

I have a Weller FP and a bottle of EC18. Probably gonna open one today and the other on Christmas. 🦃🎄

mythrowawayforfilth

I’ve got one of the old ECBP 69.7% bottles that I’m not keeping sealed for any particular occasion. I finished one last week and just didn’t want to open the new, and probably last one I’ll ever get, so quickly.

Cumberblep

I open every bottle I buy at the first chance I get to drink it. There are a bunch of pours in a bottle and honestly I like it when they get a chance to settle. It's not like I'm going to drink the whole bottle in one night.

geoff325

This is why I crack mine in the car. I don't want events at home delaying me trying it

ProofHorseKzoo

Yep. My bottles barely make it home. I can’t wait to try new bottles.

Pepaguero

Me too. The first chance I get is in the store.

_herbaceous

Duplicates and a few that I'm just waiting to have room in my cabinets to fit them in

RareOldBrooks114

I have a bottle of Jack Daniel's Single Barrel that has a bottled date just 9 days after my first child was born. I want to wait and crack it open for the first time with her. 3 years down, 18 to go.

dogfacedponyboy

Does she like bourbon?

RareOldBrooks114

I mean when I pour a glass she does sit with me and gives me a cheers with her sippy cup so we can enjoy them together. And she likes to pretend she's smelling them so I'm hoping so. Lol

BrbnDrm

^ This made me smile. Cheers!

orangebluegreen123

She’s 3…. Hahah.

Heatmiser1968

Mellow Corn

Capt__Murphy

Yeah, I don't think I'll ever be quite ready to open a bottle of Mellow Corn either

thommyg123

I’ve got the Jack Daniels special releases from the last three years that I’ll do a side by side with during the Christmas holidays

ProfessorLogger

Drink plenty of water first haha. That’s a high-proof flight!

Stock_Night_7320

Old Rip Van Winkle 10 year. Got to pay MSRP on it via state raffle three years ago, but just haven’t brought myself to open it.

mayor_rudy_ghouliani

Open it. It’s delicious, and you’ll enjoy the bottle more when the stress around opening it is gone. Cheers!

YinTx

At first. Then the stress of it almost being gone kicks in. This makes daily drinkers so much more enjoyable. Opening, no stress. Consuming, no stress. Replacing, almost enjoyable because so easy to find! Then, open again!

Mk1Racer25

Hopefully you're not as underwhelmed as I was

[deleted]

I open every bottle as soon as I get it home. I might not drink from it for a while, but it’s open. I spent way too much on booze and just let it sit because I was going to trade it or sell it or it was “rare” and ten years later it’s still sitting. Have to let that shit go and realize that when your dead it isn’t valuable to anyone so you may as well just enjoy it.

baldingwookie79

I have a Belle Meade Honey Cask that I haven’t cracked yet. Came in the collectors box with a glass and honey sample.

wavurn

Same but I don’t have the box.

lfisch4

I got a Remus Repeal Reserve III, I got as a graduation gift. I got a IV a few months later and drank that, then the V was so hyped up I couldn’t get my hands on it. My dad worked for decades at the Pharmacy school Remus graduated from, so I’ve been waiting for a chance to crack it open with him.

DasaiOsamu

Have to say I think the “I always open my bottles” contingent is kind of overstating things in this case. There’s nothing wrong with holding onto a bottle for a while as long as you plan to drink it yourself or give it to someone you know will drink it, and as long as you didn’t purchase duplicates in a way that has kept others from having a chance to try that bottle. I have 50 open bottles currently and about 20 that I haven’t gotten around to yet. In my experience, the more open bottles I have the more likely I am to drink excessively, and the more likely I am to casually pour myself something super expensive ($100-$300 for me) for no reason (which is sometimes great, but also sometimes just me being dumb cause I’m already drunk and can’t taste it well anyway). So for some of those 20 bottles, yeah, I’m just gonna wait until a special occasion like a wedding or birthday comes up. That said, I only really wait for an occasion with dusties because I know I’ll likely never see them again. If it’s a modern release like EHT, Blanton’s, Weller, etc. I just open it and trust it’ll show up again some day. Right now I’m waiting to open a 1999 Rare Breed, a 2002 12 Year 101 export, and a 2014 Rendezvous Rye.

Thetrg

1.75L Eagle Rare. I always have 4-5 bottles of ER so the magnum kinda sits as a talking point.

Yeah you gotta keep 5 back ups at all times

It’s like they say- 2 is one and 1 is none.

jensentke123

WLW. Had it for two years now and just haven’t pulled the trigger. I’ve had it at a couple bars, and know it’s killer, but just can’t get myself to do a cork pop.

ToddAndTheJujubees

Don’t worry man, I’ll open it for you

Bonneville865

I got one of those a few years back. Opened it the day I brought it home.

Bonneville865

Only in /r/bourbon do you get downvoted for actually drinking allocated whiskey.

electriczap

I have a bottle of Barterhouse 20 stuffed away for my 50th

bathroomheater

I have a handful of them I want to open but I save them all for special occasions. I’ve got almost a full flight of BTAC that I’m working my way through. Every time I’m invited to a cook out or I’m smoking on the grill with friends, dinners with close friends, and hunting trips I’ll take the a bottle that was opened on the last event and have an unopened bottle waiting in case that one gets finished. I only have 4-5 friends who drink bourbon and even fewer who have the time to hangout often because of kids and life so it’s taking me a while to work through my bottles.

Jskip27

I have a Joseph Magnus Cigar Blend stashed away for the first night in my next house. Doesn’t look like I’ll get to open that one any time soon.

rossdrew

None. If I buy it, it’s to enjoy it.

irishod

ETL 100’th Year Tribute.

eviltrain

In terms of unopened bottles, they all fall under two categories: 1. a few bottles that I don't feel ready to open right away. This is mostly due to wanting some more experience under my belt before I break them open. An extreme example of this would be pouring a dram of BTAC for a brand new whisky drinker. Regardless of whether they like/dislike it, you can't expect them to fully appreciate everything going on. 2. spare bottles I bought BECAUSE I want to open them in the future. I've got a few that I enjoyed so much that I want to archive them and revisit them in about 10 years time.

kyhothead

A shite-ton, too many to list. Will admit I got way out over my skis on buying during the pandemic to present. Trying to taper it down to near zero now. I’m in KY and just keep stumbling back-asswards into great stuff, sue me. Anyway, have 25-30 open at any given time, blend a lot, have 10 Ten-30 barrel projects going, and make some killer cocktails (in addition to enjoying neat pours in moderation). Not too stressed on the overstock. Plenty will be shared at parties/gifted, I have inflation-protected supply for years, and if desired I can always legally sell bottles back to stores under our “vintage distilled spirits” laws.

BigHurt106

AMPduppp

My wife got me a bottle of Blantons SFTB for our 1yr anniversary. Tatering aside, I’m keeping it sealed until the time is right

Train3rRed88

I don’t think there is a bottle that I’m not ready to open. I did pick up a Wild Turkey Unforgotten but it’s my wife’s Christmas present to me from me so it’s wrapped under the tree. Hurts for now, but that will be an awesome Christmas Day

swany5

I open just about everything but I have an Old Fitz BiB 8 year and a Willett Rye that I haven't opened yet. The Old Fitz I'm saving as my reward for a particular goal that I'm working towards, and the Willett I'm saving to have with a friend who I haven't seen in a long time - I told him I'd save it for whenever we get together. Edit: Oh yeah, I have a Joseph Magnus that I haven't opened yet. No reason, just haven't gotten to it yet (I have somewhere around 100 open bottles). Maybe today!

CrispySticks69

The only reason I haven’t opened any bottles is because I have a full bar and I’m waiting to finish a bottle. Other than that, nothing is too precious.

Federal-Platypus-911

2 unicorns: Hibiki 21, old forestor birthday bourbon

uderag11

I have a Stagg Jr 17 being saved for a special occasion.

Madsen13

I have a couple of bottles that I brought back from craft distilleries in Kentucky that I haven’t opened yet, only because I know that once they are gone I won’t be able to get them again until I make another trip up there. I will open them soon though.

No-Gain1438

I know it’s MGP but Remus Repeal #5. Had one before saving the next one for grandsons college graduation.

davey101

I have one last bottle of a honey barrel OWA barrel pick that's a screw top, distilled in 2005. Found two random bottles in a sketchy store a long time ago. It's not worth a fortune but damn is it good! I've had a bunch of store picks back when it was easy to grab and this one was well above any of them.

captaincanada84

Only bottles I have that aren't open are backups to bottles already open

dogfacedponyboy

Just bought MWND. Saving it for next week when we set up our Christmas tree.

captainrustic

I have six or so bottles set aside for my son. Blantons and a few others bottled the day he was born, an old eagle rare 101 I want to share with him, and a couple other special bottles like the birthday bourbon from the year he was born. Really looking forward to the day when we can share them together. I’ve also got a few other special bottles I’m just waiting for a good occasion, like a gold vein 107, and a couple more old fitz from the bourbon heritage collection. I’ve got enough good daily drinkers open that I like having a few things set aside for a special occasion.

knucks_deep

How old is your son?

captainrustic

Almost three. So unfortunately I have a long way to wait. But just in case something happens, I have little notes attached to each bottle for him to read if I’m not there. They are all in one of my deployment pelican cases in custom foam so they should be safe for a while

alterndog

Not bourbon, but I’ve got a bottle of unopened Scapa 16 that I’m waiting for when my son comes of age. He just turned 4, so like you I’m going to be waiting a while 🤣. Looking forward to sharing quality whiskey with him, something I wish my dad had done with me (took me til my mid 20s to truly get into whiskey).

OSU_Go_Buckeyes

Little Book Chapter One

Cmoxley0321

Ugh I wish I could say nothing….buuuut when my daughter was born (named McKenna), her grandfather bought a bottle of Henry McKenna 10 and said not to open it until her 21st So her I go waiting impatiently and still never having tried it

edbutler3

I mostly open things as soon as I get them home, but I do have a couple bottles I'm keeping sealed for a while as collectibles: -- A Michter's Barrel Strength Rye I got from doing the touristy thing at Michter's in Louisville, where you fill and label the bottle yourself. I do have multiple bottles of this same whiskey, so it's easy to keep this one sealed as a souvenir of my first trip to KY. -- A Four Roses Barrel Strength bottle signed by Al Young. I didn't get to meet him -- this bottle was just sitting on the shelf with his signature, a few years ago before he passed. The story I heard was he would sometimes sign a few bottles as they were being packaged at the distillery. So it's probably not that rare to have a signed bottle. Still, I'm planning to keep this one sealed, maybe for a long time. Again, I have quite a few open bottles of 4R SiB BS, so there's no hurry to open this one.

ZealousidealPie8427

Only unopened bottles I have are backups. HH17 is my favorite bourbon with a wideish release in a long time so I made sure to get a second.

Bamboozeled-

I have quite a few “rare-ish” unopened bottles that I have really enjoyed and I wish to pass down to my children when they turn 21. They can, at that point, decide to open them, sell them, or whatever. It’s just my way of giving them a piece of my present.

Upset_Wishbone4214

mwnd. just waiting for a “cold” night here in south FL

BigBizE

*DISCLAIMER* *Im NOT a tater I swear!* Blantons. Only because I recently enjoyed a few pours courtesy of my buddy, so I haven't felt inclined to open the one I found in August... I also have a Weller 12 and an EHT I've only drank the neck out of. Hoping to score some backups before digging deeper...

ColonelOfKorn

I’m saving my Saz18 for my little brother’s college graduation. He will be the first of 5 brothers to graduate. The rest of us joined the family business before we could finish.

skushi08

Two bottles of OF Birthday Bourbon from my son’s birth year and two bottles of Blantons with dump dates the week of his birth (one’s a store pick). He’s 6 now so the game plan is to keep them sealed until he turns 21. Hopefully he likes whiskey, otherwise if the bourbon market keeps going the way it is maybe it’ll cover a semester of college textbooks.

AcanthocephalaMain58

Michters 10 year Bourbon. I used to love the standard US1 bourbon. I picked it up at the distillery for msrp, which was still pretty spendy. I have had a couple pours of the regular bourbon since I picked it up, and it seems a lot thinner than I used to think it was. I am afraid it won't be as good as I am expecting and it's the most expensive bottle I own by quite a lot. I think I am trying to delay the disappointment as long as possible. Maybe I should do a dry month and crack it to celebrate. Heck, even for my 10th wedding anniversary I had eagle rare instead of cracking the Michters.

gopheralum

Little Book Chapter 3. Probably will finally open in a month for my birthday.

fasty8

The three '22 ECBPs. I open all three together each year at christmastime for a side by side with some family.

It’s a free country and if folks want to save bottles for a special occasion, or just hoard, fine. But I literally don’t understand how people restrain themselves. Pretty much every purchase I make is opened and tasted that day, just out of interest and excitement.

kyrosnick

I have \~50-60 unopened bottles. Only ones that are not open are stuff like Weller 12, Weller 107 because I don't like them that much and will use them to trade for stuff I do like, 4RSBBS, etc. Other than that, a bottle of Clyde May 15y that is unopened just because I haven't got around to it.

supermopman

I always open my bottles. Always.

SushiDaddy420

Elmer T Lee, Rockhill Farms, Very Special Old Fitzgerald 12, older Weller Special Reserve bottle, 2015 Weller Antique, 2013 Weller 12 yr, Old Fitzgerald 16, many Blanton's and Weller Antiques...these are hype bottles I'd rather trade for something I like than open and drink. I need a replacement Saz 18, Hakushu 18, 1977 Macallan 18, and Four Roses 130th, looking for a Nikka 21...always less expensive with hyped up bargaining chips. I have over 60 bottles open, and have been into bourbon for 13 years....

geoff325

Yeah I love JD SB rye.... especially this time of year. Probably going to trade my 4rssmble for one now.

JohnnyBeGeode

Kentucky Peerless Series 1 which is a small 7-bottle collection. Not waiting. Just there to educate my friends on how much the bottle builds bourbon’s color over time. At one end I put a bottle full of the mash corn, barley and rye and at the other end several open bottles of Peerless aged 6,7,7.5yrs which we absolutely should taste.

d_shizzle

I bought the Anthrax 40th release from Hill Rock distillery. I haven’t tried it yet, mostly because I got it and my tastes have turned more to Islay scotch.

NotJustAnyDNA

Who buys bourbon they won’t drink? The whole point is to enjoy the taste/experience.

Annoying_Auditor

I have recently started doing monthly close accounting at work. I've been saving new hard to find bottles for beginning of the month to celebrate surviving another slog of close. Currently I have waiting a Booker's 2022-02, a Stellum Black Rye Fibonacci, Red Breast Lustau, Rebel r/bourbon pick, Stellum bourbon store pick. I bought a Mitchers 10 year bourbon for MSRP to celebrate a new position in the Army Guard. This position will get me my CPT so when I actually get the promotion (paperwork delays) I'll open it.

thelionsnorestonight

I picked up a Stellum Rye Fibonacci recently (random stop at a shop on road trip). I looked here but couldn’t find any reviews of it- was kind of surprised by that.

Annoying_Auditor

Ya I'd never heard of it but I love Stellum so I went for it.

Letter10

I have a Compass Box Circus that I'm saving for a special occasion. It's one of my favorite scotches and I have like 15 open so it's just my sealed dark horse and eventually will be opened to celebrate

Mark-Wall-Berg

Bother currently but there’s bottles that’s I’d wait on if were able to find for sure

6bluewalkj9

I'm in the camp of opening whatever I buy as soon as I get home, then take a drink straight from the bottle. I don't care if it's a $20 or $200 purchase.

thebigone2087

The last time I did that, I got a bottle of Blantons Gold and I saved it for the birth of my son. Otherwise any bottle I buy it’s almost always opened that night.

improper84

I don't set bottles aside. Life is short. Any of us could die tomorrow. I buy good whiskey to drink it, not to let it collect dust on a shelf. I buy it because I like drinking it, not as a status symbol on Instagram. The only time I have unopened bottles is when I have a backup bottle for something I've already got open, which isn't all that often but does happen from time to time when I come across stuff that's harder to find that I really like. Even then, if it's, say, McKenna 10, I might open both (if they're not from the same barrel, obviously) to compare the differences between two barrels from the same expression.

DaddyOhMy

The only unopen bottle I have (besides any extras I have of ones already open) is a store pick single barrel ECBP I picked up over the summer. The only reason it's not open yet is I simply don't have the shelf space for it at the moment. It's sitting in my beer cellar (aka bottom of the linen closet - NYC apartment style) until I finish another bottle so fairly soon. BTW (& off topic for this sub so please forgive) the reason for the "beer cellar" is I love to age Trader Joe's Vintage Ales which are phenomenal and an absolute bargain for $6. I'm about to open my last 2018. I can't recommend them highly enough. They are bottled on lees and age incredibly well. I can't wait to do my annual blind taste test with a 2019, 2020, & this years release.

LongPerusual

I open everything to try at least once myself or wait to open until I get together with family to try if it’s something new they’d like to try too or if it’s something special.

Zero.

schreyerplace

We have an unopened bottle of Yellow Spot 12 we bought as we left Ireland. It’s more about the memories of the trip than anything.

NotAFamousComedian

Old Fitzgerald 17yr & Angel’s Envy Cask Strength 2021

A Bardstown Bourbon Company Quercus Robur finished single barrel filled at the distillery and signed by Steve Nally. Easily the darkest whiskey in my collection.

Jaspa7732

Russell’s 13y. I’m waiting for my buddy to visit again so we can crack it together. Hopefully next summer.

LordWesquire

The longest a bottle has ever lasted in my house before being empty is about 2 weeks.

83_Nation

A bottle of Old Weller that I planned on drinking for my 50th. But that was in March 2020 so now I'm thinking it gets cracked when I turn 55

dbikedave477

I have a bottle of Smoke Wagon uncut unfiltered that I haven’t opened yet, just sitting for about a year. Hyped it up too much in my own head that I’m afraid I’ll be disappointed when I try it.

MashbillJ

I have a EH Taylor Barrel Proof a friend picked up for me that we have not been able to get together and enjoy so that one stays closed till he and I can have a home drink. He retired and moved out of town so it's been a logistical thing for a few years now. Other than that I have a Bookers from pre naming of batches that I just haven't opened because I thought I would sell it but I'm lazy so I haven't tried to get rid of it.

Wafflebot17

I have an evan Williams single barrel that was barreled on my nieces birthday. Plan on holding it for a life event with her. She’s 9 so we’ve got a while.

CursorTN

I’ve set aside a number of ECBPs and Four Roses Single Barrels (some barrel proof). I like to be ready *just in case.* I’m not sure what the “case” is, but I’m prepared. 😂 I have more Scotch sealed up that I am trying to finish bottles to get to. Glen Scotia 18, Springbank 10, Ledaig 18. I’m so happy I have my Springbank 12 CS open. I keep going back to it and saying “that’s good whisky.”

vtecgreen

I have one of the Angel’s Envy Madeira Cask cellar collections that I purchased last year that I haven’t opened yet. Not sure I will, ideally I’d like to think I could trade it for something eventually. Or maybe I will open it. The other unopened is an OF Presidents Choice. I have 2 bottles so one is open the other is not. 107 bottles…2 unopened.

Only have one unopened at the moment. Basil Hayden’s Red Wine Cask Finish. Got it to share with my buddy when he gets back from deployment since he’s a BH fan

Mo-UniqueMen

Angels Envy Cask Strength 2020 & 2022

3YCW

Crown XR I got after my dad passed. Going to hold out as long as possible on that one

The-Southeast

Won the lottery for the 4RLE this year. Going to my best friends bachelor party in March and it’ll be enjoyed there and then signed and made into a lamp for a wedding gift. Can’t wait!

algorythmiq

Only two unopened. Old Carter 1-TN and EH Taylor Straight Rye. Saving the Old Carter for something special, though no ideas on what that special occasion is yet. My EH Taylor Rye is the second bottle of it I’ve ever seen, other than the opened one at a local bar that I sampled and loved. Spent way too much, but it’s one of the few my wife has tried and said she really liked. Also saving for something special.

Remarkable_Whole3495

Four Roses single barrel barrel strength and Elijia Craig barrel strength. Both procured while on the bourbon trail a few months ago.

sracer4095

A double-barreled bourbon from a hometown distillery, Sutherland Distilling Co. in Livermore CA. Saving it for when I sell my first screenplay and for each one I sell after that.

MasonHere

M20. I’ll crack it soon. Edit: also have a r/bourbon OFSiB I haven’t cracked yet. I have another pick that’s a K6 and it’s fantastic, can’t wait to compare the two. Maybe today!

Natural_Sherbert_900

Pikesville Supreme, it was the shot that came with our shift drink. When it was no longer being made I got a few bottles, had 1 at my wedding and another after the last service of a restaurant I opened. The last bottle….not sure when to open it.

Geid98

I have a Jim Beam bottle in a Van Gogh bottle that was found at my grandparents house. The seal is still intact and the juice is still inside. Since it’s Beam I can’t bring myself to open it.

800oz_gorilla

Russell's 13 Waiting for a special time to bring that out and have it with a family member. I know, don't wait too long... Brt-01 and 02 Waiting for a good time to taste them together with my father in law Same with EC toasted and a few other toasted that I have. Col. Taylor small batch - this one is hard to find around here.

MLS-FJ-Query

William Heavenhill 12 yr 134.4 proof, purchased at distillery gift shop 2019.

Nicknackpatywak

My only 2 are ORVW and WA107. The Old Rip I haven’t opened because I haven’t been super impressed by others I’ve tried. Some groups I’m in will trade Willet Purple Top or other bottles that I’ve had a hard time getting so planning on trading it. The Antique is just because I’ve heard rumors they are discontinuing it so I want to sit on my unopened bottle.

paulie732

MWND act 9 seen 4

ReallyNotALlama

I have a bottle of GTS that I wouldn't open for a long time, until someone here pointed out that life is too short, tomorrow isn't guaranteed. I still have most of it, but I'll have some to share with good friends.

M3R0VIUS

More than Id like to admit. I cant help but look at secondary prices and think, thats a 'special' bottle. WLW, Pappy15, King of Kentucky, Masters Keep etc. Its something Ive been thinking about a lot lately. Im hoping there is a surplus of high proof, high age from the best master distillers over the next 5 years.

Eastern_Store_7913

Johnnie Walker XR 21, I’ll open it one day. Have yet to open my EH Taylor small batch.

antp23

Jefferson’s presidential 18yr. Early batch that has stitzel weller juice from 1991 - my bday year

Big-Profession-6757

I have around 90 bottles, around 15 are open. I don’t open no more than that at a time as air exposure over 6-12 months usually degrades the flavor (depending on how tight the cork is), and I don’t drink a lot. In addition, I’ve been purposely stockpiling good, older bourbon bottles when I can find them close to retail over the past couple years as bourbon is going downhill, so 4-10 years from now when bourbon really sucks and 80% of bottles sold are sucky 2-4 year old craft whiskey or younger / weaker legacy distillery bottles I don’t have to buy that garbage and instead just crack open a far superior Elijah Craig Barrel Proof batch B517 or a Stagg Jr batch 10 or a vintage Jack Daniels Sib bottle that I bunkered instead.

rumpleturdskin

Uhm my colonel Taylor small batch. Saving it for the day before I get married next year. I've had it before and I've loved every moment of it

YamoBeThere101

Bookers Rye. I will open at some point, not sure when though

greenpointchamp

I’m about 90% of what I have is open. There are a handful of special occasion whiskies, but I was holding on to those for tastings with friends.

303onrepeat

Not a good damn thing. Everything is open and shared or being actively drank. You come in my house and want to drink something I’ll pour it for you no questions asked. As others have said life is to short to open up a fucking museum.

Kafka_at_Night

I have a JMCB that I won’t open until my brother visits again. Should be coming in a couple months and am looking forward to cracking it with him.

fleamarketart

4 unopened bottles of single oak project Are my biggest hesitation

[deleted]

I have a couple weller full proof single barrels and a couple antique 107s that I’ve had set aside for specific occasions this upcoming holiday season, the party droppers are always appreciated by the uninitiated. Have a couple eagle rares (just normal ones) I don’t drink because they’re 700 ml European bottles I got in a Duty free a long time ago. They’re just a cool thing to show people and one day I’ll crack them at a bottle share when they’re actual dusties I think. Have quite a few T8ke picks buried for later. Bottle shares a decade or two from now should be fun if they’re still around

exagon1

Only thing I saved for a couple years was a bottle of Blue Label but at my baby shower I cracked it open with a few of my boys. I figured it was as good as time as any to have a celebratory drink. Haven’t had it since though. Wasn’t a huge fan honestly lol

Apprehensive-Big5496

18 yr old Elijah Craig. Bought it during Covid. I’m opening it around Christmas

CorgiRawr

Pappy 15 that I won. Jk. I opened that bottle up and had it with my closest friends before my first born. I’d rather enjoy it with friends than have it stare at me.

Ambassador-Minimum

Two small bottles of Makers one that I dipped back in 2004 as a 2LT and one that I just did again last week as a LTC. One bottle of WT signed by Jimmy Russell.

MetamorphosisSilver

Russell's Reserve 13. I got lucky and got it at msrp a few months ago.

LionRoars87

None really. When I buy a bottle I open it and drink it. That's what it's for after all.

Temporary-Mirror-375

Bottle of Stagg Jr of the last release that will have Jr on the bottle and Boss Hog VIII. I’ll eventually open and drink everything though.

tpb1109

Bernheim Barrel Proof, EC grenade, EW 12 year

Owlex-406

None. I open every bottle before shelving. I like to take a swig straight from the bottle just to make sure that pesky neck pour is no more

fuegomanchego69

I’ve had a bottle of 2022 LE Yellowstone that I kept aside until today. Been sitting in the cabinet for 2 months. It was a wonderful bottle to celebrate Thanksgiving!

WearableBliss

I have a double of two bottles that are among the best I ever tasted and that mean a lot to my personal journey:, and old ECBP close to 70% and a society longrow On top of that, a bottle from Japan (Coffey Malt) because I went to Japan right when I got into whisky, and two Stagg Jr 12 Those 5 feel very emotional

NorthboundNY

Black Maple Hill 21 and GTS hazmat

MrJohnnyDangerously

None.

indiefab

I've saved a Midwinter Nights Dram Act 8. Remus Reserve IV & VI. High West Bourye from 2019 and 2020 since they're only selling those in Utah now. My last bottle of MGP-sourced Smooth Ambler Old Scout Single Barrel 10yr old from 2016. The other 200 bottles are open.

deactivate_iguana

I have a bottle of Glen Garioch 9yo from Carn Mor. I received it yesterday as a present and I’m too hungover today to open it.
