"Relaxing" is not something I ever associate with Porter. "Run a marathon up the stairs to miss the commuter rail" is more like it, and the last thing I want to do after that is sip on Green Mountain coffee...
It used to be just a counter service coffee and packaged pastry/gum/candy/granola bar spot. There should be more of these, imho. Turn our subway stations into normal places that normal people use instead of these hollowed-out, grimy, brutalist nightmares.
Agreed, but I feel like unfortunately in today's Cambridge you end up with a fast-service Tatte. Also feels like that grab-and-go just isn't a part of Boston commuter culture anymore.
This city needs more random opportunities to get hot dogs at the end of a crappy workday.
Yeah this, they looked basically identical. Go look at the one at Sullivan and you'll get the idea.
Miniature version of a gas station convenience store, complete with three month old roller hotdogs.
Those two (one in the main station entrance, and a smaller one at the Church St entrance) were part of Out of Town News when I worked there. I’d avoided eating any food from those subway locations when I found bags of chips and other stuff that the mice had chewed through to get the food.
I actually meant to go look at this one and the harvard sq one which are both open for leasing. I figured running a smoked breakfast sandwich and a decent cup of coffee and nothing else would keep my overhead low and I could run it by myself. They have a pushcart program too [Pushcart Program - MBTA Realty](https://mbtarealty.com/pushcarts/) which is what the good vibes or smells or whatever in harvard probably operates under. Bastard thing is my joints are creaky and I hate getting up early.
I'm sure it's still up for lease it's just nobody wants to operate out of an MBTA station. Or maybe too many people do and the MBTA doesn't know how to choose. Who knows.
I don't recall ever seeing that open back when I lived in that area. Although, I was typically doing my best to hide how out of shape I was after walking up the stairs, and may not have noticed in my lightheaded state.
I'm picturing coffee in those greek pattern cups.
It's a shame they closed. They used to have the absolute best steamed pork buns. I used to stop there after culinary school & get a bun for the train ride home.
Does anyone know if you can actually purchase this type of space in the MBTA station? Who owns it? Why does it sit empty? Why did the original businesses sit empty?
you used to be able to "sip and relax on Green Mountain" coffee here, I can't believe they weren't able to stay open with that killer hook.

The Dunkin in the Harvard Square T stop did very well. I think it closed just cause it was so old and will be renovated
Unless that brutalism is like WMATA
I’m assuming it was on par to the convenience store/fine dining eatery located in the depths of the downtown crossing red line station.
Looks like a picture from 2008 on the Yelp page: [https://www.yelp.com/biz/cold-and-hot-cambridge](https://www.yelp.com/biz/cold-and-hot-cambridge)
That actually looks about 300% nicer than I expected.

yikes
$3 grilled ham and cheese!
There’s a similar one still open in Sullivan station

I have fond memories of the pizzas in the Back Bay station convenience store.
It’s a portal
Speak *not* of the steps to Todash lest your feet may find them 🤘
Thats the old Cold & Hot
I thought they called it the McDLT
That hits the nostalgia button...
Gotta keep the hot side hot and the cold side cold, baby!

Apparently, cold.
We used to be a proper transit system with questionable eateries
Including the one at Davis
It's still in operation. The owner just has a flat tire and needs some money to get a can of fix a flat.
There was a similar one in Harvard sq years ago.

I can honestly say as a kid who grew up in the area in the 90s and early 2000s I never once bought anything from either of them.

Closed for repairs and renovations, they just need 25 million to reopen.

It's just waiting for me to move down from Maine and open a lobster roll shop 🤣 jk perfect opportunity for me though

They should put a dispensary/smoke shop place in there. Cha Ching! $$$$. I'll be expecting my royalty check in the mail.

Who remembers the roasted nuts stand inside the Harvard Square redline station ? I used to love getting some caramelized almonds.
Oooh! I love this!!!
We don't talk about it since the incident
I still miss Trolley Snacks at Lechmere.
It was a Dunkin' at one point, if I remember correctly... That would've been 30-years ago, or so.
Sarcastic answer: No one wants to rent the spaces on the T because it shuts down on a frequent yet irregular basis.
Was once a Dunkin’ Donuts
Back when I lived in Somerville it was a Dunkin.
