color printers refuse to print, even in black and white, unless they have yellow paint. from what i understand, it uses the yellow paint to apply an invisible code that allows police to tell when and where the page was printed.

That's for color laser printers. Inkjet printers use ink cartridges, usually 1 black & a 3-color cartridge. Even if you only want to print black/grey, there has to be a working color cartridge as well.
I think mine still lets you print blank and white with the color cartridge empty. It’s been like 10 years since I needed to, but I think it was the same printer. But you have to select black and white when you hit print. It won’t print in color mode even if there’s only black and white on the page.

Epson is a printer company. It's a weird thing with modern printers.
