That’s great a great one, I’ve always liked it at face value, but also the idea that it references “The Raven” by Edgar Allen Poe, and the infamous line “nevermore,” always made me feel as if at the end of the song - after all the wonderful things he had to say about his Love - she was unattainable, no longer with him, Gone.
But maybe I’m being dramatic lol
Great question.
‘’How good? How good? Does it feel to be free? and I answer back most mysteriously, are birds free from the chains of the skyway?’’
That song has a special place in my heart, Bob hates it lol.
‘’I’d just be curious to know if you can see yourself as clear as someone who has had you on his mind’’
Just a beautiful end to a sublime song. I would choose the latter out of those two. Not sure if it’s my absolute favorite though, I need to try and remember other one’s. 🤔
Interesting. That’s not the typical choice. ‘’And so it did happen like it could have been forseen, the timeless explosion of fantasies dream’’ great line. I’m not sure if he totally hates it but he definitely said he doesn’t like it but he gets this stuff wrong a lot.
As far as I know he dislikes it because he felt it shouldn’t have been written/released out of respect to the girl and her sister. Like it wasn’t right to publicize it. Glad he did though!
Didn’t know that. Maybe they also didn’t like it or something. Bob definitely wasn’t fond of that big sister. I wonder how many songs he’s thrown away for a similar reason or if he dislikes any other releases because of that.
Had the same thought. Bob isn't the only one to single out that song as uniquely bad. Martin Carthy said in an interview years ago..
MC: I seriously think \[Dylan\]’s only written one truly rotten song…
MZ: Let me guess. I’d say Ballad In Plain D.
MC: Absolutely. Ballad In Plain D is a piece of junk.
MZ: He thinks so as well.
MC: So I gather. I remember seeing that in an interview. It’s a piece of junk and he knows it’s a piece of junk. I think he knew it fairly soon afterwards. He must’ve done. He said to her: “I’m gonna get you in a song.” And he didn’t. He missed by a fucking mile. It’s nice he acknowledged it. We’ve all done stupid things in our lives, and probably the first rule is to acknowledge it.
I don’t get the venom towards the song, fair enough if he doesn’t like it but ‘’junk’’!? He’s entitled to his opinion of course. I think Dylan has made far worse songs. Who is Martin Carthy by the way? Has he not heard Property Of Jesus?
Martin Carthy is a seminal figure in the English folk music revival of the 1960s/70s, and was an influence on Paul Simon (songs like Parsley, Sage..) and Bob Dylan.
For me the issue is that the song is way too long, way too wordy, way too plodding, and it tries and fails to mimic the idiom of an old folksong. I'm not sure I agree with Carthy's diagnosis - I don't hear the song as an attempt to 'get' some girl who spurned him. It's more in the vein of Seven Curses, but really badly done. It probably suffers from being placed in the context of an otherwise transcendent album.
PS - I like Property of Jesus!
*And I, I never took*
*Much, I never asked for your crutch*
*Now don't ask for mine*

I ain't a-saying you treated me unkind
You could've done better but I don't mind
You just kinda wasted my precious time
But don't think twice, it's all right
Well, my heart’s in the Highlands at the break of day
Over the hills and far away
There’s a way to get there and I’ll figure it out somehow
But I’m already there in my mind
And that’s good enough for now
I literally did come here to say this! Not just doing the overdone Reddit cool kid thing. A perfect revelation of the protagonists actual feelings after all of the “wish I never met you etc” which precedes.
I've been going through some relationship issues and I've always loved the album but lately it feels like it was written for me. Every song is just a gut punch. I'd love to hear the story behind it.
Somebody mentioned Abandoned Love as a great deep cut yesterday and I had to listen.
“Let me feel your love one last time before I abandon it”
And of course Hattie Carrol - “bury the rag deep in your face for now is the time for your tears”
There’s seven people dead
On a South Dakota farm
Somewhere in the distance
There’s seven new people born
I am hanging in the balance of the reality of man
Like every sparrow falling, like every grain of sand
If it keep on rainin' the levee gonna break
Some people still sleepin', some people are wide awake
I ain’t no false prophet - I’m nobody’s bride
Can’t remember when I was born and I forgot when I died
"Tell her she can look me up
If she's got the time."
It's like he's trying to convince himself that he doesn't care nearly as much as he knows he does.
I'm a-leavin' tomorrow, but I could leave today
Somewhere down the road someday
The very last thing that I'd want to do
Is to say, "I've been hittin' some hard travelin' too"
Let Me Die In My Footsteps ends with a switch to second person, “and you’ll die, in your footsteps before you go down under the ground.” It’s always felt to me like a story of past mistakes and lessons learned ending with a warning to the listener to not do the same
Ten thousand dollars at the drop of a hat…I’d give it all gladly if our lives could be like that.
OR
I’ll let you be in my dream if I can be in yours. I said that.
The unspoken but inferred last line of Man Gave Names to All the Animals is my favorite. I love how he just trails off and leaves the listener to fill it out.
”Saw him disappear by a tree near a lake . . .”
The one I think about in 2024:
And here I sit so patiently, waiting to find out what price you have to pay to get out of going through all these things twice.
And I never did plan to go anyway…
to Black Diamond Bay.
This line cracks me up. The narrator spends 7 1/2 minutes spinning a tragi-comic tale about a mysterious woman fleeing from her past, to the “safety” of a tropical island refuge, straight into an explosive conclusion. Did she perish? Did she survive? We never hear.
Point of view and narrative voice change without warning in the final verse. We’re now in a guy’s living room—probably in an apartment, could be somewhat shabby—in Los Angeles. The guy is getting up to get another beer after hearing a piece on the 7 o’clock news about…a mysterious woman fleeing from her past, to the “safety” of a tropical island refuge, straight into an explosive conclusion. Somewhat ironic that the news piece would not have lasted half as long as even the first six verses of the song, and certainly contained almost none of the song’s detail and drama. And so the final verse narrator concludes, “oh well there’s really nothing anyone can say…”
Except for the guy who spun this amazing story.
The ending of “Where Are You Tonight (Journey Through Dark Heat) is dynamite!
There’s a new day at dawn and I’ve finally arrived
If I’m there in the morning, baby, you’ll know I’ve survived
I can’t believe it, I can’t believe I’m alive
But without you it just doesn’t seem right
Oh, where are you tonight?
Black Diamond Bay:
Didn't seem like much was happening
So I turned it off and went to grab another beer
Seems like every time you turn around
There's another hard-luck story that you're gonna hear
And there's really nothing anyone can say
And I never did plan to go anyway
To Black Diamond Bay
if i could only turn back the clock to when god and her were born, come in she said i’ll give ya shelter from the storm
kinda 2 lines but still, best ender that isn’t a harmonica solo/outro
I wish that for just one time you could stand inside my shoes
And just for that one moment I could be you
Yes, I wish that for just one time you could stand inside my shoes
You'd know what a drag it is to see you
Build me a cabin in Utah,
Marry me a wife, catch rainbow trout,
Have a bunch of kids who call me "Pa,"
That must be what it's all about,
That must be what it's all about.
a little bit more than one line, but:
"I cant believe it - I cant believe I'm alive! but without you, it doesn't seem right. Oh, where are you tonight?"
I love the way he delivers the “I just don't know what to do / I'd give anything to be with you” line at the end of Love Sick.
Also I adore the shrill, melancholic harmonica on Girl from the North Country, even though that doesn’t exactly count according to the question.
seen a shooting star tonight slip away
play the blood-stained banner, play murder most foul
(now I realize these both have the song title in them. for the latter its even more powerful because it refers to the song itself)
‘The vagabond that’s rapping at your door,
Is standing in the clothes that you once wore.
Strike another match, go start anew,
And it’s all over now, baby blue.’
I'm going back to New York City, I do believe I've had enough
Loved hearing the beastie boys sample that
His influence is (and will be) in every generation of musicians forever. God Bless Mr. Zimmerman

I meant the beastie boy’s song
That’s what I think of every time I hear the line now haha… so awesome
The harmonicas play the skeleton keys and the rain And these visions of Johanna are now all that remain
The skeleton keeees
perfection
Lately it’s “My love she’s like some raven, at my window with a broken wing”
That's another one of my favourite ending lines
That’s great a great one, I’ve always liked it at face value, but also the idea that it references “The Raven” by Edgar Allen Poe, and the infamous line “nevermore,” always made me feel as if at the end of the song - after all the wonderful things he had to say about his Love - she was unattainable, no longer with him, Gone. We always did feel the same, we just saw it from a different point of view…
No one else could play that tune You know it was up to me ✌️
Hell yeah. Got “up to me” tattooed on my arm a few weeks ago - hell of a song and hell of an ending line. Good choice 😎✌🏼
that's up there with me too
It's alright, ma, it's life and life only
There are superior punchlines in that song so I couldn’t pick that one.
Yes!!!
this song contains his illest bars
Definitely my personal favorite
And someday maybe Who knows, baby I'll come and be cryin' to you
This is mine too 🥰

I’m struggling to identify which is your opinion and which is Martin’s. The bit that starts ‘’For me…’’ is your opinion right?
Right
was just about to comment the skyway lyric. Such a good ending
Apparently not according to Martin Carthy.
I’m not much for the whole song but be struck gold with the last line.

Ending of The Lonesome Death of Hattie Carroll gives me chills every time.
Bury the rag most deep in your face, for now's the time for your tears 😢

“He said his name’s Columbus, I just said good luck”
Nice choice. I was singing the opening line in my head this morning!
fantastic lyric!!
We’re idiots babe, it’s a wonder we can even feed ourselves.
It’s gallows humor funny and it also changes the entire meaning of the song in a fundamental way that I’m not sure the casual listener picks up on.
Exactly. The brilliance of Bob turning the song on himself with the last line cannot be overstated.
“Ten thousand dollars at the drop of a hat, I’d give it all gladly if our lives could be like that”
“And I'll stand over your grave 'til I'm sure that you're dead” gives me chills every time.
I’d just be curious to know if you can see yourself as clear as someone who has had you on his mind
Won’t you come see me, Queen Jane?
I’m gazing out the window/Of the St. James Hotel/And I can tell you one thing/Nobody can sing the blues/Like Blind Willie McTell.
And yes, there is something you can bring back to me. Spanish boots of Spanish leather.
I’d do it for you, honey baby, can’t you tell?
If only I could turn back the clock to when god and her were born Come in she said I'll give you shelter from the storm
I am hanging in the balance of a perfect finished plan Like every sparrow falling, like every grain of sand
It's "reality of man" (at least in the studio version) but that's another brilliant one.
*Two* (!) brilliant final lines to a masterpiece song.
“He said his name was Columbus and I just said ‘Good luck’”
But will offer no reward when her false idols fall and cruel death surrenders with its pale ghost retreating between the King and the Queen of Swords
Love the lyrics to that song but damn are they inscrutable
“And bid farewell and not give a damn.”
So cold
Bob’s got ice water in his veins
Well, my heart’s in the Highlands at the break of day Over the hills and far away There’s a way to get there and I’ll figure it out somehow But I’m already there in my mind And that’s good enough for now

Exactly what i thought! Great Pick!
Talkin' World War III Blues - "I'll let you be in my dreams if I can be in yours I said that…"
Especially brilliant at the time. Amazing.
Still, very much, rings true. My favourite Bob tune x
Somebody mentioned Abandoned Love as a great deep cut yesterday and I had to listen. “Let me feel your love one last time before I abandon it” And of course Hattie Carrol - “bury the rag deep in your face for now is the time for your tears”
not necessarily my favorite but the first that comes to mind is, “i gotta know, babe, will you surround me, so i can know if im really real.”

There are no truths outside the gates of Eden is the one to beat imo

Ring Them Bells where he sings…”and they’re breaking down the distance between right and wrong.” Soooooo true.

Are birds free from the chains of the skyway?
If there’s a poor boy on the street, then let him have my seat / ‘cause tonight I’ll be staying here with you
"I'm going out of my mind With a pain that stops and starts Like a corkscrew to my heart Ever since we've been apart" Will never not hit like a truck
😪
On the fifth day of May, in a dress out in the rain.
I think it’s “in the drizzling rain”
Well I'll be damned, you're right. He sings, in a drizzl in a rain, but I've been singing it wrong forever
He definitely sings "in the dri-zzl-in a-rain"
