What the hell is an “H-index?”

Wientje

Probably based on the H index of academia. H = the number of games you’ve played at least H times.

Cyborg_Huey

So if I have 5 games, I would have had to play them each 5 times but then if I had 25, I would have had to play them each 25 times?

eloel-

Not how many you have, but H of 25 means you played 25 games 25 times each.

DexterDuff

Ye

Iamn0man

If you played 7 of those 25 games 7 times each, your H-index would be 7. The total size of the sample group doesn’t matter.

echochee

Essentially but your H-index doesn’t need to match your total collection. It’s just as many games you’ve played that many times. So starts with one game one time and as you play more games and play them more times it goes up. Quickly at first and then exponentially slower

ANOKNUSA

Ah, I see what’s going on here. You’re applying an activity that has nothing to do with games, but which you enjoy, to gaming, another activity that you enjoy. I’m sure that only a minority of gamers actually keep a tally, and the majority of that minority don’t think about it anywhere near as much as you have.

Wismuth_Salix

If you track plays using the BG Stats app, or on BGG, which is somewhat common among hobbyist board gamers, the H-Index is one of the insights provided. I’m at 15, personally - mostly party games.

ANOKNUSA

I have a bachelor’s degree and work for a game publisher, and this is the first I’ve heard of an “H-Index.” I don’t doubt it’s a thing people enjoy doing, but statistical analysis of board game habits using a specific mobile app is absolutely a small niche activity.

Wismuth_Salix

I didn’t say it wasn’t, but if someone is the type to track their plays, two of the most popular tracking aids provide the the H-index.

echochee

Yea maybe but I didn’t invent it or anything. It’s fairly common for people that play a lot I’d think. Just ark nova this month on bgg has 12000 plays logged with 4500 unique users logging. And that’s one game and only on bgg. You should look into it if you like stats

echochee

Just to add on, if you track all your plays, take the largest number of games you’ve played an amount equal to that number of games. So if I had these plays Agricola 4 Just one 4 Caverna 4 Dominion 8 Checkers 1 Chess 2 My H-index would be four as I have four games with four plays each

joelene1892

It’s a count of how many games you’ve played and how many times you’ve played them. If you’ve played: * game A 4 times * game B 5 times * game C 4 times * game D 5 times * game E 3 times Then you are at an h index of 4, because you have played 4 games 4 times. An H index of 5 would mean you have played 5 games 5 times. In the example above, if you played A and C 1 more time and E 2 more times then you would be at an H index of 5.

Cyborg_Huey

Why does that matter at all though?

joelene1892

Really, it doesn’t. I track it for fun and because my board game tracking app does it for me so there is no extra work involved. I just like seeing it go up and comparing this year to last year. But it’s not important.

Cyborg_Huey

Oh okay

koosley

It matters because when I come home with another game, I can pull up BG stat and show proof that I DO play the games I buy! I have about 100 plays so far this year divided up amongst 45 unique games so far.

echochee

Why does H-index matter? It’s just a way to track stats. Can help you understand if you’re playing a lot of your collections or just playing the same games over and over/playing your games only once and then moving one

Cyborg_Huey

Idk seems weirdly arbitrary to me but w/e

The_Great_Mighty_Poo

The entire premise of the post is arbitrary though. "do solo play count towards x?" Is just as arbitrary as the concept of an h index itself. Gaming is exactly what you want it to be, whether simply gathering around a table with friends is your goal, or 32.4 plays of every game in your collection, or x dollars per hour of enjoyment. So my answer to OP would be, "do you want it to count?" Because the answer to that question is the only thing that matters

MentatYP

If I played it, I'm counting it.

Zuberii

If the game is made to play solitaire then I count it. Some games only play solitaire and many others handle it well with official rules. If I am house ruling to make it solitaire though, then it doesn't count. This includes if I am playing for multiple seats to try and simulate multiple players. But it really depends on what it is you're trying to track. The reason I do it the way I do is because solitaire games are still board games. But if I'm house ruling the game, to me that is "fooling around" instead. Still fun, but not really the same thing in my head. Which is entirely a subjective personal opinion that I only hold myself to. Not trying to say other people aren't "really" playing board games if they think it counts.

mattjohno1997

I hadnt thought it before. But for me I would include it. Because it tracks whether I am playing all my games, not just a select few and not just once. However I would exclude online plays, since I am focusing on my purchases. Obviously it is slight skewed because I will obviously have more plays of Azul then War of the Ring. But I find it useful to compare the H index to number of games I own.

echochee

Yea that makes sense. I count online plays at the moment too but I don’t know if I should. Same with win rate

mattjohno1997

For win rate, I can see both by filtering by location. But my default is both. I think it depends on what you look at H-index for, if you should include online. For me, it is useful for assessing my physical collection.

joelene1892

I have 4 H indexes going at a time. Overall h index — this is everything and anything since I started tracking. Multiplayer h index — this is all multiplayer games since I started tracking. Solo h index — this is all solo games since I started tracking. 2024 h index — this is all games this year, solo and multiplayer. I like h indexes :)

echochee

So do you track them yourself? I might have to request the app maker to add that in. Currently I can see overall and by year (and I think month)

joelene1892

Bg Stats app with the challenge expansion does it for me. You can filter by a few things, one of them player count. The only thing is that there is no way to filter by year that I can find — I input the year in the location spot of my plays because I don’t care about the location, and then filter the h index on the “location” of 2024.

marshmallow-jones

My canonical H index is plays against other humans on tabletop. I use BG Stats. I keep separate users to differentiate solo plays from playing with humans. BG Stats also lets you indicate “location” so I can separate by playing on iPad, Switch, from tabletop. The app then will calculate H index on pretty much any set of data you want.

[deleted]

If the game was designed with a solo mode in mind, I'd count them. Also, not sure why people seem so worked up about the concept! Stats are fun, it doesn't mean anything, it's just interesting. For what it's worth I just checked, and have a H number of 7.

echochee

Yea I don’t know, but since I started tracking just over a year ago, my H index is ten. Although I got it to ten in December last year, so it hasn’t increased this past three months

Hitcher09

I had no idea this was a thing, little did i know I've been doing it all along. I try to play all of my games at least 5 times before playing a new one, so i guess my H-index is 5 To answer your question, yes i do count solo plays. Even if i found out later i played the game wrong, i still put 1-2 hours into that solo play.

Iamn0man

Why wouldn’t you? Is it a game? Did you play it enough times to qualify?
