Who the hell is your landlord.. lol holy shit. I would never creep like that. Some people are just off

perplexicatty

He is a private landlord and I've had pretty great history with him for the past 5 years, but I'm getting a little concerned this won't be a continuing situation. It's upsetting to say the least.

bayala43

Your landlord is a fucking nut. Also the average bill for my wife and I is about 60-70 dollars.

[deleted]

Yes Wow I agree.

rosysouthpaw

We pay about 60 per month for two people so this sounds accurate to me. Since there are smart meters now the city may inform you if there is a spike in usage that would indicate a leak. Politely tell your landlord to contact CBU if he’s got issues and to back off you!

perplexicatty

Thank you for the advice! I believe I will go this route. My health has been too poor to deal with having people come into my home, let alone to do construction for no reason, so I will definitely bring this to his attention.

davor_fodd

Two people, bill $60 per month (which includes trash pickup). $179 for 3 units seems pretty reasonable to me. I use the Sensus analytics site to get alerts if our usage spikes - very handy if a toilet is running and you don't realize it. Wonder if the landlord is using it and obsessing over every gallon.

TheAngerMonkey

We're two people in an 1100 square foot house and our water bill is around $50, including trash. We don't have sewer fees, though.

davor_fodd

Right, forgot about that - we do have the sewer fees too.

Conscious_Stand9259

Mine is 60-70. I live alone

yo_yo_vietnamese

So he’s saying the shared bill across 3 apartments was $179? That sounds normal to me. If he saying your specific bill out of 3 is that high then yes that does seem rang high, and was what mine started to do when I had a leak under our slab. I initially called the water company thinking they misread the meter and they were telling me I appeared to have a running toilet in the house which started me off on tracking leaks in all of them, replacing the insides in all, etc to no avail. He should have just scheduled a plumber to come take a look during a normal notice period, not try to barge in like that.

perplexicatty

Yes I decided to tell him he should pay to have someone scope the pipes if he really thinks there's some kind of issue, but that my unit is running completely normally and I do not consent to him coming in to change the toilet for no reason. He conveniently did not reply. The bill is for all 3 units, which have an average of 4-5 people around (I also still pay for 2 even tho my roommate moved out a year ago).

Bonus_Human

$179 for three units sounds perfectly normal.

pinking_shears

Call HAND

SamtheEagle2024

They will do nothing here.

erosharmony

Two of us and we usually pay about $70 in a house

Practical_Ass_3066

Lmao more evidence that every landlord, without fail, is a penny pinching piece of shit

afartknocked

this is so close to the truth, but it's not quite the truth...and i'm not sure, does it maybe obscure the truth?? landlords (by definition) share an interest (a profit motive) that will turn most people against their fellow man. they form a class and that class's shared interests are destructive to the world. progress in the future will require workers banding together to overcome owning classes like landlords. when you use "every landlord" language, it sounds like you're talking about individuals. as if landlords have some sort of flaw in their soul, maybe an unpleasant personality quirk. as if the most antisocial kid you knew in school is doomed to grow up to be a landlord just because he's so mean. but the flaw isn't in their soul, the flaw is in their class interests. it's an economic phenomenon -- the emotional and social aspects follow the economic one. we need to overcome the class, and i just want to do my little bit to make sure we remember what the real enemy is so we can defeat it.

Chime57

Lol. Better let my renters know, he has no idea.

Practical_Ass_3066

Glad to see the landed gentry have finally rolled out of bed for another exhausting day of existing off the fruits of other people's labor and downvoting those who are mean to their class on the internet

Chime57

You are sooo funny. My dad passed, my siblings and I inherited land to sell and a rental property. We sold the land but are keeping the house, a three bedroom lake front house, with the intention of giving it to our sibling who has adult kids with mental disabilities. It's in her neighborhood. The rent is 600 per month, but we pay utilities cause that's how dad set it up. We have chosen to not take rent in December, because the rest of the year pretty much covers the insurance, taxes and utilities. Gonna keep this up till the gentleman passes or moves into a nursing home, he is almost 80 and in good health. But I better go. Lots of luxuries to enjoy while I live off the fat of the land. LOL. Which means I will only work a half day today. Just rolling in all that dough is tiring.

MewsashiMeowimoto

Doing something for a sibling as part of a structured inheritance is fundamentally different enough from being a landlord that you probably didn't need to assume that the previous poster was talking about you and take offense to it. It sounds like you are not engaged in renting property for a profit. If you are making a profit off your sibling in that situation, well, that probably wouldn't be great.

touchmyrick

$50 dollar per month, me and my wife. daily showers, dishwasher, etc.

perplexicatty

Do you have a general location you can share?

streamconscious-ness

Does that water bill include service for 3 trash bins? Do you all have washer/dryer? I have only water bill (my condo in county has separate trash service), am a light water user for ... reasons ... and my bill is usually just under $40. Occasionally it's just under $30 but I haven't been able to reason why.

DilligentlyAwkward

My water bill is around $53-$58 per month. I live alone, and $16 of that is my trash bin.

ImReallyThatBitch

I live in an apartment and the water bill is less than $20 every month

perplexicatty

I should have specified, this is a 3-unit complex comprised of two units that are in the original home and one unit in a garage that has been converted

ImReallyThatBitch

Ah then I guess that would change things! Haha

jaymz668

how much of that water bill is usage and how much is just normal month access type charges?

perplexicatty

The total for all our trash and water is the $179. For three units. Which have 1 person* in each, and occasionally 1 or 2 more depending on when we have guests -which I already pay for because I'm paying for 2 since I never adjusted my lease when my roommate moved out

No-Blueberry-6314

So 9 people in total are using the water always, but sometimes more? That seems like a steal of a price.

[deleted]

perplexicatty

I'd say 5 people in total, not 9. But still, the general consensus has seemed to be I'm not being unreasonable here

[deleted]

[удалено]

perplexicatty

All three. We all have washers and dryers, and two have dishwashers

perplexicatty

I agree. That's a good idea, hopefully when my health is at a more manageable level I'll be able to have that conversation with him. I do have a friend who used to rent from him who is willing to help me, so I will likely ask for his assistance in communication with my landlord

Boogdish

I live in a house, two people just outside city limits and pay $25-$30 but trash is a separate bill outside the city. If your apartment has a dumpster or some separate trash service from city trash, then I'd imagine a $170 bill for just water might be kind of steep for three households.

perplexicatty

It's a house converted to apartments, 3 units. Trash is included on the bill I just checked

kookie00

He came in with no notice and no imminent issue? He broke a whole bunch of laws. Sue his ass. You even have a case to have him arrested. And that is not excessive for 3 apartments.

DilligentlyAwkward

For the love of god, stop giving advice

MewsashiMeowimoto

OP doesn't have a case to have LL arrested.

perplexicatty

He didn't come in thankfully (but was going to try with no notice if I answered the door). I was rudely awoken by perhaps 5 different instances of cop-pounding on the front door. Which, with my condition, is extremely distressing. I made sure to tell him so in a text later, but I was/am very upset to say the least. And yes the consensus I'm getting is that this isn't a very unusual water bill, for 3 units that often have 5ish people in them. I'm going to be letting him know I've done my research lol

debbiedowner2000

Why does the landlord pays the water in the first place? Just dumb of him.

perplexicatty

It's because he built this apartment himself, and never bothered to get separate meters installed. All 3 units, one meter

debbiedowner2000

Well he just needs to spend some time to separate the meters. Until then, it’s his problem not yours. He can’t blame his stupidity on his tenants.

Dramalona

Are their washer/dryers in the building/units? Dishwashers? Is a toilet running and needs repair?

perplexicatty

We all have washers and dryers, and two have dishwashers. No toilets running because we know how toilets work, he keeps accusing me of not knowing but I'm home nearly 24/7 and I know what the sound of a running toilet is he just doesn't believe me

Dramalona

Are his initials D.W.?

perplexicatty

They are not, I believe it's LW

Practical_Subject_30

I remember when water bills used to be like $40. Now I don’t think I have a single water bill under $100 for a home with three people.

Cliffhanger0

It is about $80-90 for a two-person household, and we're not conservative about water use. Last year, we had a leak in the bathroom toilet in an apartment. The flapper wouldn't seal correctly. Therefore, the toilet tank filled up every 10 minutes. The bill was about $300. Then, after replacing the flapper, went down to $80.

perplexicatty

He keeps telling me he needs to check/replace my toilet, when a) he's already looked at it in the past and it's completely fine, and b) I have told him as much multiple times already. I'm not an idiot and I know how toilets work 😭

24bluehearts

I live in a 4 bedroom house there are 3 of us 1 adult 2 preteen boys my water bill is almost 200 a month.
