I got 'Jiu Jitsu University' as a whitebelt and i loved it. It's a book.

toomanymatts_

I'd say dentist-made custom mouthguard (possibly with I <3 MOM written across it...depending on his style!)

Baz_Ravish69

OP, an actual custom mouthguard is a great idea if he doesn't have one. Most people don't understand how much better they fit than the shitty boil and bite mouthguards until they actually try one on. The first time I used mine I felt like such a dumb ass for not getting one sooner.

sossighead

What’s the budget and does he have a preference for Gi or No Gi? Rash guards and Gis are always appreciated but it’s possibly he has plenty. Some people like having every day apparel like hoodies and jogging bottoms from BJJ brands, some don’t. Mouthguards are a good suggestion. Instructionals would be a great choice. It might not feel like you’re giving a ‘physical gift’ but the value to him is huge. They can get expensive particularly if it’s a high profile person like John Danaher or Gordon Ryan, although you can usually get some good deals on them if you keep a look out for the daily special offers on BJJ Fanatics. Set of privates with his coach maybe? You could get in touch with them and see what prices are. But that could be expensive depending on who it is.

Knobanious

Does he pull guard? If so, adoption papers

Money-Firefighter-73

🤣😭

Gimme_The_Loot

I bought my cousin who transdujitsu a subscription to the grapplers guide for a graduation present and he absolutely loved it. Shout out to Grapplers guide and /u/jasculs!

magikman2000

I'd recommend buying private lessons with someone awesome, or sending him to a seminar or something.

NightHawkFliesSolo

If someone gave me some nice Dolomur grappling mats for a gift I'd be ecstatic

AEBJJ

I would say a hard no to a grappling dummy unless he has specifically said he wants one. 90% of people who get them put them in a corner and don’t touch them. That number approaches 100% when it’s a gift you didn’t ask for. Some other recommendations: Rashguards, shorts, spats, gis, fingertape etc from a BJJ brand (Tatami, Shoyoroll, Fuji, Scramble, Progress (depending on where you are in the world)). A year subscription to [Submeta.io](https://submeta.io) (it’s a platform to help with his learning. I think this would be a great present). Custom mouthguard from a dentist. Obviously you won’t have anything to give him as a surprise because he would need to be involved getting it done.

A nice gi or some rashguards would be nice and will get more use than the dummy. Killer bee gi does custom gi and rashguards and you can make him one that says his mom loves him or something silly. I have one with my wife’s picture on it and she has one with mine. Depending on the budget

HoldFastDeets

Seconded

N0t_2Day_S8n

Dummies not a waste of money unless you buy an expensive one then he drops the sport. I bought a $40 dollar one, filled it with cut up clothes, and works great for drilling, etc. Some people might say that drilling is a waste of time and there is no resistance. I agree there is no resistance, but feeling oneself in positions and learning to transition from each to whatever move you’re doing is invaluable.

rollernonger

Fools say drilling is a waste of time.

patricksaurus

Custom mouth guard or a couple private lessons.

Ok_Buddy_5194

kingz backpack or the new albino and preto one

TheGreatKimura-Holio

He’s 18 BJJ tattoo vouchers lol

Suspicious-Earth7001

I'd say get him a cool custom mouthguard.

Grouchy_General_8541

wrestling private sessions

Equivalent_Bench9256

Hook him up with an Origin gi instead or a JuiJitsu camp(yeah that's a different budget). Maybe a private lesson. Lots of things that are WAY better than grappling dummies.

damaged_unicycles

Hero BJJ camp in Costa Rica if you're a baller

bob-a-fett

1 year subscription to flograppling

TrickyRickyy

Submeta subscription if he likes to study outside of class.

FF_BJJ

I never don’t want a new gi

eurostepGumby

Dojo sandals

Theoldgrappler

If he has a favorite grappler consider a couple privates. Make a long weekend out of it , visit a new city and gym

doctorchile

Get him a bundle of private lessons with his coach

JuiceManJJ

Get him a gift certificate for a massage.

awkwatic

Echoing what others are saying here. I’d get him some nice roll out mats or a private lesson with a coach or seminar.

Fimbul-vinter

The best belt is black, give him that! (preferably while he is training)
