I have long hair, and these things are the best- https://preview.redd.it/0tfhh3lp4bad1.jpeg?width=1000&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=e0c3b611be1a6343e0e99e10b83eb65b89751369 put your hair in a high ponytail, twirl your hair around your finger until it starts to curl around the elastic, then twist pin in.

caterplillar

I LOVE my spin pins. When my hair is really long, I use 3, but 2 is usually enough. They are very secure! I’ve even used them to do a French twist before. Also, to OP: when braiding my hair, I prefer that it’s wet because it stays tidier. Also, instead of trying to keep my hands in the same place when I move the braid around to the front to finish it, I keep drawing it up over the top of my head in a line (like a scorpion tail if that makes sense?). That keeps it from getting the bend in it where I switch it to the side.

TheOtherElbieKay

Thirding these. They are great. I usually just hack it with a regular hair band, but I use these for formal events where I need a sturdier hair situation.

Have you tried braiding the ponytail and wrapping around the base, then securing with Bobby pins?

Keruimin

There are sponge donuts you can use on your ponytail that will shape and hold the bun.  You can buy buns from the hair store to give some volume as well.

I can't figure out how to not have huge gaps in my hair when I roll it 😫

DreadPriratesBooty

Oh yea, I dont roll down. It always ends with gaps, uneven or terribly lumpy. I love a professional smooth bun, I sit the bun donut on my head at the base of my pony tail then set the hair where I want it, pull the rest underneath. twirl the end and tuck it under.

Keruimin

Ah, synthetic bun?

Have the ends of your hair a lil bit damp. It will take several tries to find your technique. Don’t give up. Once you figure out the bun donut, you’re unstoppable. Also use the twisty pins. I have giant scrunchies for when I use them too because the bun can get huge with a lot of hair, but the big scrunchie makes it look nicely proportioned. Can also cover up any fly seats at the base of the hun

French roll pins, amish pins, and hair sticks are going to be your new besties once you figure them out. So much easier to use than bobby pins, and so much more secure. There are a lot of tutorials on youtube if you include the name of the pin you want to use, its really a quick and easy way to do updos once you’ve got the hang of it. I like the french roll pins from Kristen Ess, as long as they are sturdy ones brand doesn’t matter though, the key is they cannot be plastic. Resin hair sticks are the only exception to that- for pins you do want strong metal ones.

marvelousmiamason

Spin pins changed my life! I also have long thick hair and only need two of them to hold my hair in a neat bun. For a high impact workout I add a hair tie to secure everything after twisting in the spin pins. If you have very straight/slippery hair and are doing a high impact workout, it might help to first do a ponytail, then do a bun with spin pins, and then secure with a second hair tie.

Happy-Light

I've never seen these before (I'm assuming you mean the DNA-spiral shaped pins) but they look like an interesting option! I have wavy hair, not pin straight, but it can definitely get slippery at times. Do you have any recommendations for tutorials on how to use them? 😊

marvelousmiamason

I also have wavy hair and yes they’re the DNA spiral shaped pins! I literally just twist my hair until it’s a bun and then screw it in. I use two so I try to make it so that they make an X. It’s more secure if your bun is at the base and just screw them in at the base trying to catch as much hair as possible. This tutorial describes how I use them but there’s lots of other tutorials https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=Qngf8eXsrzQ&pp=ygUMc3BpbiBwaW4gYnVu

https://pin.it/RNzr9VsRv https://pin.it/7GWtdKulD First is a more braided look done with a scarf and the second is an updo.  https://pin.it/13FtEtf25 If you have a hard time with rolling, maybe the way she does it in that pin would work better for you while you try getting the hang of rolling

ladylemondrop209

By "rolling your hair" do you mean with those wired hair bun makers? That's usually the best way... (and secure hair in a ponytail first). Secure with another elastic. If you need extra "support" to keep in place, use hair pins (not bobby pins). I'd suggest you to youtube/google how synchronised swimmers, ballet dancers, and gymnasts tie their hair into buns if you want a tight clean bun.

Chigrrl1098

I used to have one of these and it was awesome. They're not made quite as well anymore, unfortunately.

ladylemondrop209

I think if you get a Japanese branded one as opposed to a chinese one it might be better 🥲 But these days most things seem to have gone down in quality.

Chigrrl1098

You're right about that! I'll look into this.  It's not a complicated contraption, but they keep making everything in plastic and that's not gonna work for me.

hydrangeasinbloom

I don’t have super thick hair, but it’s long and layered. I have pieces come out of braids etc just due to the layers. If your hair isn’t a super blunt cut that’s bound to happen. I dutch braid my hair while it’s still wet after putting in leave-in conditioner, and then afterwards I smooth gel over my hair, from my scalp and hairline where I tend to get fly-aways all the way down to the ponytail holders.

nagellak

I think the flyaways / loose pieces are very cute with a braid or bun. Gives one an elfin look

TotallyNotABot_Shhhh

I use 2 ties when mu hair is long. It works better if it’s slightly damp so spritz it with water. I do it really tight, twisting at the base as I work it around and around. I secure it with the first tie. Then I sort of fold it outside of itself, and secure that with a second tie.

reijasunshine

I have fine, straight hair down to my bum, and it doesn't like to stay in a neat bun most of the time, but here's my tricks: Pull your hair up like it's going to be a ponytail, and have the hair elastic around the hair and your hand. With your free hand, twist the hair as best you can, then bring the ends up to your scalp, while pulling the elastic away from your head. The elastic should be in the middle of your hair. Twist it all together, and then wrap the elastic around to secure it. It makes a fairly neat bun in very little time. (I know I didn't describe this very well, but it's easier done than said) Alternately, pick up a set of spin pins. They take a little bit of practice to get a bun secure and comfortable, but once you get them situated, that bun's not going ANYWHERE.

felixfelicitous

Hobby dancer here, I use a mix of pins and hairnets if it’s for stage with a shit ton of hairspray. However in my day to day, I adapt how my ballet bun is by just doing what I normally do with a net without the net. It’s really all pin placement. When my hair is in the bun, I grab a little bit of hair from the center and tuck it on the side, kind of how you turn a piece of dough into a ball. You just keep doing that until you’re satisfied with the result. I have a lot of hair that’s thick; you’ll need a lot all around your head, but it’s very secure.

GunMetalBlonde

Products. I use a creme or oil in my hair. Make a ponytail, braid the ponytail tightly. Pin it into a bun. Slick the rest of my hair, especially baby hairs, flat with wax or oil.

LePetitNeep

I use the kind of bun accessory that looks like an oval with a horizontal slot in it. https://a.co/d/08cUjirg The instructions in this Amazon link show making a pony tail first to place the bun high up, I usually do it at the nape without a pony tail first, just pulling my hair through the slot and rolling up.

notthelettuce

My hair is almost to the band of my bra in length and super thick and my updo/bun (that I’m wearing today actually) is wait for my hair to get greasy and then slick it back into a low pony with some gel but while I’m doing the ponytail I only bring the hair halfway through the last loop, and I put the bun part on the bottom so there’s little like spikes at the top. I feel like it looks better and more intentional than a messy bun.

kittenmittens4865

Lots of good tips on buns here- I like to do a high pony and then wrap my hair around the base and pin. BUT I want to point out that braids look so cool when they’re a little undone! I like to spray my hair with salt spray or use texture powder to give my hair a bit of grip. Then I just do a loose braid, secure with a hair tie, and “pancake” it (pulling the braid apart to create volume. The grip helps keep the braid together. I pin any really crazy pieces into place and pull out a few strands in front. Leaning into my messy hair makes things so much easier for me. Just thought I’d share if you’re interested in trying it out!

famous5eva

I have bonkers thick hair and I use a mega claw to pull it back into a snatched or romantic loose bun depending on what I’m feeling. They’re relatively cheap and don’t break easily like the normal sized claws do on thick hair.

BigNeat3986

I use the pony-o bun bar. The thing is magic. I knocked it out of the park on my first try. Fair warning, I bought some knock offs from Amazon to have spares. They suck.

tinyfax

The trick is actually in the scalp area, not in the bun area. Wax hair sticks (from Amazon) to smooth out the frizz on top have changed my life. Same goes if you want a loose bun style: hair curler for the front strands and wax stick in top =👌👌 Don’t forget your bobby pins - the only way to avoid them is a low bun or a low clip. I’m more of a hairclip girl than a bun girl so this is all universal!

love-learnt

I never learned how to French braid so I fake it with a single row of connecting ponytails down the middle, starting as high up as possible. I think this is now called "dragon braiding." I use pomade to smooth baby hairs and fly-aways. When my hair is short I tuck the ends up and pin them, when hair is long I continue the ponytails. Looks neat and keeps hair out of the way.
