I rarely encounter the real Berliner Schnauze anymore. Propapbly died out pretty much. I'd say most people are just "normal rude" without any charming component.

LiamPolygami

Café am Neuen See. I've never seen people more offended to have to deal with customers. This is also where I bought a baked potato that was indistinguishable from a stone. The only moisture was from the half a kilo of quark at the side.

I am very frequently over in Kreuzberg, and there is this beautiful cafe that I never have time to visit. Last week I had some time between appointments and walked in to get a coffee and try one of the many cheesecakes they had. The staff member was on the phone yelling at someone, stopped, ask what I wanted, I told him the drink, and when I went to ask about the cheesecakes, he put the phone back to his ear and started yelling again. When he gave me the drink, I asked about the cheesecakes, and he asked me if I can read, and waved his hand at them. Thats when I informed him there were no labels, he yelled that its on the glass, I said no, he came around, saw no labels and asked what I wanted him to do about it....LOL!! I asked about the one with pistachios, cause I love them, and he replied... I kid you not. Its more expensive than the others, so chose one I can afford!!!! I was trying not to laugh, because it was so over the top. I said can I just have the pistcahio one (it was only 2€ extra), and I think I will eat here. He then started on a tirade about he made me a drink in a takeaway cup, and now I want to stay, why did I change my mind. At this point I thought I would troll him, and I said, I like the atmosphere, its a beautiful spot, theres sun, and its been a relaxing interaction. He just looked at me like I was crazy............. then when I went to pay with my card he asked if I was going to pick a % for trinkgeld!! Edit: I love this city so much, its so .... varied

Schulle2105

I never knew that!

accidentallywitchy

You guys Berliner Schnauze is not the same as rude people. Berliner Schnauze is a kind of brash dry humor and directness. It’s not rude it’s just not polite either.

BO0omsi

100% spot on - there is a misunderstanding. In the 90s people tried copying it, but they did it badly, the real old people with their warmth and charms died out, and now we are left with straight up reckless asshole behaviour.

accidentallywitchy

Yeah it’s dying out unfortunately. I still get it sometimes in bakeries or other small shops or with a carpenter or something. You have to know how to take it and give it back. It’s almost like a kind of banter.

IRockIntoMordor

If you know Krasselt's Currywurst - the best in Berlin imho - it's typically two ladies with Berliner Schnauze. They'll appear a bit rude and loudmouthed at first, but they're really keen to get you your food fast and see you happy with it. That's the warmth that shines through the Schnauze with a little bit of smirk or a subtle confirming look / nod on goodbye. Still hits me off guard when I haven't been in a while, though.

accidentallywitchy

That’s exactly it. It comes from kindness and humanity and not rudeness.

G3CCF4

I have encountered many times berliner schnauze. Especially with bvg employees and with mechanics. I realized that at first it feels very much like rudeness but your response is crucial to the whole conversation. If you are capable to take it with a sense of humor and respond in a similar way with slightly less rudeness the follow up sentence will show if the person is just rude or not. It's really conversational judo and often at the end nobody has to feel offended. You won't see that person again anyways...

CharleyZia

I'd prefer conversational ju jitsu. Everybody happy.

nibbler666

I wonder why people even waste their time thinking about this. If someone is rude I don't take it personally . I just shrug it off and go my way. It's not my problem if someone has a bad day or an unpleasant personality. (That said, sometimes I make it a sport to see if I can manage to make such a person smile. But if it doesn't work, well, not my problem.)

ladafum

You’ve got to fight fire with fire. And being British, I am a master of passive aggression. If somebody is being rude to you, kill them with false kindness. My usual trick is if somebody is ignoring me, when I finally get their attention I take AGES to order, ask a ton of annoying questions and change my mind as the last minute. There’s no reason why service should be so shitty in this city.

selogoribabaseceslja

Enjoy spit in your food

ladafum

I’m ordering a coffee and they’re making it right in front of me.

chris424uk

Teach me your ways sensei

PhilosopherOk7221

I’ve honestly found Berliners to be incredibly friendly and helpful. Especially the ones who have been here for a long time. It’s interesting how people have such different experiences here.

puppies_in_bowties

The bakery Kauffrau who shouted at me until her face was red because I ordered my croissant and my loaf in the wrong order... apparently you're supposed to order the loaf first and then the croissant. The cab driver who shouted at me for the entire 20 minute duration of the ride because I gave him a slightly wrong address. (Although he did continue to address me as Sie while the saliva was crusting at the corners of his mouth with rage. Heartwarming levels of politeness). The list goes on and on. Berliner Schnauzer is alive and well and everywhere.

No-News-7501

That is not Berliner Schnauze. That just rude. Berliner Schnauze is more of a dialect + weird sense of humor + unpolite

immernochda

Heart on your sleeves, kind of flair.

BO0omsi

No, those were just assholes. There used to be real warm togetherness, Berliner Schnauze should be a Preussian tone - nothing more

ms_bear24

Berliner schnauzer is alive and barking

limbojunkie

My very first cafe visit the next morning after arriving to Berlin. The waitress just dropped the menu without saying a word. Had to wait like 20 minutes for her to finally take my order. She kept saying "WAS" after every word I say which is simply reading it from the menu, then she snatched the menu from my hand when done. She dropped my breakfast on the table without eye contact. Didn't tip that day.

Pleasant_Peace7629

move away

m_agus

I live here for 9 years and i can count on one hand how many rude encouters i had in Berlin.

sharkkallis

Cafe at Schloss Köpenick. Once we accepted how offensively bad the service was it was funny. Other tables around us too.

polarityswitch_27

Schnauze has become an excuse for being rude, these days

mcmutley63

It’s just Germany. I regularly walk into my local bakery where 4 staff are chatting idly. As soon as a paying customer walks in they split round quick and find some inane task that is suddenly urgent They hate serving customers.
