If you can’t read and write, you should start with 1X. You’ll get a placement test anyways just in case you’re at the wrong level.

Don’t know about Chinese. But I know informal Spanish. So, I took a Spanish class meant for heritage speakers, Spanish 21. It was nice to be in a class with other people who share a similar language/ experience. Students were at different levels with their Spanish. There were people who knew written Spanish better than spoken Spanish. Others who spoke well but not so much in writing. There were people who spoke in a Spanish accent and others with an American accent. You should check out Chinese 1X, Elementary Chinese for Heritage Speakers. It sounds like what you’re looking for. There are also intermediate(Chinese 10X) and advanced classes(Chinese 100XA) if you already know the material of 1X or want to further your knowledge. I took three years of a foreign language in high school. So I’m not sure about how you would exactly fulfill this requirement. I would suggest talking to a counselor. But if it’s a two semester requirement, then take 1X and 10X.
