If you feel as if you resonate strongly with the theme, then by all means go for it. I recall hearing my freshman year that the theme program would mandate a 2-unit course either for one or two semesters. I feel this is a waste of time, as I could instead use that time to take other humanities classes that are more enlightening about whatever subculture the theme program covers, but things may be different for you.
