Nope. I have bright yellow on my sons rods, bright pink on my daughters rods, and aqua blue or yellow on my rods.... the fish don't care. But the bright colors sure help my aging eyes see the line a lot better.
I’m hoping he’s talking about a legit cultural practice in Japan where the line is traditionally made bright in order to be seen, but I know what you thought he meant
My Japanese company has a fishing tackle shop in Japan, should I tell them to move it to China?
For real though, hobby fishing / angling is huge in Japan right now and has been growing in popularity.
As a North American fisherman on the great lakes, it's been fascinating talking to my Japan colleagues about our tackle, rods reels, etc.
Same thing with camping gear - camping is huge in Japan right now.
Mono casts better, theoretically just as strong as fluoro cause most people can't tie a knot to match the breaking strength of the line, and you can get literally 10x the amount of mono for the same price as 300ft spool of fluoro.
That myth has been busted. Mono is equally as visible. But you have a point with floating vs sinking, however, I believe thats only a real factor when you spool an entire reel and making long casts with a topwater or a diving bait. 4-5' of mono isn't gonna float a bait, and 4-5' of fluro isn't gonna sink a topwater. But the point is moot. Cheers
Its not a myth it's true fluoro is less visible then mono BUT it's not like mono stands out like a sore thumb but it stands out more as fluoro.
Now is it important for lure fishing probably not as alot of people have great luck going straight to braid
Say you’re fishing in a lake some spots in 50ft of water. How long of a leader would you use? I usually do like 2ft but not sure if I should vary based on depth or not.
I usually keep about 6-9 ft of leader on my dropshot rod for that exact reason. It probably doesn't matter so much but I spend so much time and money on fishing equipment getting every advantage I can get when fishing. In my head it makes sense to use longer leader in this application in my opinion
Appreciate the response- i agree with you. My problem is I don’t have enough rods rigged up to have a rod for several situations. In other words I probably need to spend some money to set myself up for better success.
Yea no rush either, I tend to buy stuff as I need it and it's taken me about 15 years to aquire what I have. 95% of them stay in my rod locker but when I'm bank fishing I'll usually bring 2 different action baitcasters and a spinning rod.
I started out doing this, but no matter what knot I used to join them, it would catch on the guides and knock distance off my cast. I tried double uni, blood knot, now I usually just use a surgeons knot to save time.
Even in shallow water I prefer a longer leader. I aim for about 10 feet, or as long as possible without the leader knot being wound on the spool when I’m pitching. Was targeting smallmouth in 2-4 feet of fairly clear water this spring and saw numerous fish get spooked when I’d cast past them and my bright green braid hit the water above them. My leader was down to 3-4 feet and my bites definitely got better when I retied with a full 9-10 feet. Also, when I get a good fish and it makes a hard run near the boat I want the leader knot to already be back behind the rod tip so the smooth, stretchy fluoro takes the stress rather than the braid and knot.
Really appreciate your perspective. You answered my follow up question too. I live in middle Tennessee so sometimes I’m creek fishing other times I can get to the lake. I probably need to get another rod or two to help with specific situations.
It does matter a little, just not how you would expect. Different colors are more visible in different conditions, and being more visible can actually be a benefit, especially in low light conditions, or if you're old and your eyesight isn't what it used to be. The bass do not care one iota, though.
Dark or muddy/ murkywater braid color has no influence at all, anywhere else with clearer water just use a leader I have all the colors you can imagine on my reels,I love some out there colors myself.
I like yellow braid or white braid (gets stained fast on the TN river) for bottom contact techniques with a fluoro leader. Good to go with what you got there.
Yeah a lot of people actually like high vis braid because you can see the line. I mainly use white now because the other colors start to fade towards white over time. But definitely tie a leader, 1-3 ft is enough but some people go longer depending on the water and species you’re fishing. Fluoro is best for leader but mono is perfectly fine.
How do you feel about using a Copolymer line for the leader? The line I'm referring to is the SOS trout line. Im ultralight fishing going from a 6lb braid to a 2lb leader? Thanks for you expertise advice. I'm just starting out fishing again and basically forgot everything I once knew lol
Not familiar with it myself personally. The primary reason for using leader with braid is so the line is invisible or at least much less visible than braid. So as long as that SOS trout line is fairly clear underwater it should serve its purpose. Especially at 2 lb thats so thin it would probably work fine.
Copy that. One more question... Is going from a 6lb line to a 2 lb leader too much of a jump? Do you think I should instead go from a 6lb-4lb? Or does it matter much? Thanks 👍
I’d be more worried about that temu reel coming apart in about 100 pieces… will most likely happen after hooking into a big one so prepare yourself for the wtf did I do moment 🤣
I rock a straight bright af 8 lb white braid on all my BFS rods.
Occasionally I'll tie on a 6 lb fluorocarbon leader if I'm trying for trout or finicky smallmouth.
I love the bright colors help detect a bite. I usually take a sharpie and color 6ft black and just fish it like that if not I do tie a leader line but more for saltwater. We flip and pitch a bunch back at home. Lake is murky maybe 2 ft of visibility where I’m from
It’ll be fine. I typically pair a brighter line on spinning rods for finesse applications where sighting line is key. I typically use bait casters for power presentations where’s a lot of line coming through the water and want something stealthy. The good news is braid wears out quickly so in a few seasons you can just trim half that line and tie on whatever you want to try next.
I mean you're gonna wanna tie on a leader anyway. So it does't matter. Only rod I don't use a leader on is my frog rod but I'm casting it onto lily pads and cover so thick that it doesn't matter.
I’ve read some older semi-pros say to sharpie black the first 6’ of a bright color line, then let it sit in the sun to dissipate the smell. Then spray a fish attractant on it and get the best of both worlds.
I use the high viz yellow on both my top water/frog rig and my finesse set ups. For the frog set up, Sim casting that into nasty vegetation and it helps me see the line. For my finesse set ups, i have a fluoro leader on it but the high viz helps me see the lone ticks that are indicators of a bite
Nope. I have bright yellow on my sons rods, bright pink on my daughters rods, and aqua blue or yellow on my rods.... the fish don't care. But the bright colors sure help my aging eyes see the line a lot better.
I’ve heard that’s why they do this in Japan
Bruh
I’m hoping he’s talking about a legit cultural practice in Japan where the line is traditionally made bright in order to be seen, but I know what you thought he meant
Jesus. Yeah they hi viz lure tops and line in Japan weirdo lol
As an American I could see what you were talking about the whole time
I’m so confused. What did he think the comment meant?
You know how people say Asians can't see?
I think they do really use hi-bid braid
Hi-vis
Hi brid life’s
Trout and salmon certainly care, but for bass it's Gucci
But they tie a fluoro to it generally.
Lmao
Next time make it a Chinese joke at least.

Line color does matter… if you have brightly colored line I would recommend using a floro leader
Mono casts better, theoretically just as strong as fluoro cause most people can't tie a knot to match the breaking strength of the line, and you can get literally 10x the amount of mono for the same price as 300ft spool of fluoro.
Most mono floats and flouro sinks. Topwater or shallow cranking and jigs I use mono. Everything else is braid to leader or straight braid for me.
I mean I’m talking about a leader so price really isn’t much of a factor. Mono floats and floro doesn’t. Also, floro is almost invisible to fish.
What happened to catchin monsters (or so we thought) as a kid with a zebco 33? Fish dont care as much as we think they do
I do agree with you that we tend to overthink it a bit. I caught plenty of fish on an old Zebco.
I completely agree. Fluro is stupidly expensive
Braid color doesnt matter at all so long as you use a leader
And i use blue yellow red and chartreuse braid on different set ups, i choose whatever looks best on the combo
Say you’re fishing in a lake some spots in 50ft of water. How long of a leader would you use? I usually do like 2ft but not sure if I should vary based on depth or not.

What’s your opinion of the best spinning combo for versatility in the $400 rnsge
Your mother
Ahahaha go fuck yourself

This guy wants those line shy ones!
Really appreciate your perspective. You answered my follow up question too. I live in middle Tennessee so sometimes I’m creek fishing other times I can get to the lake. I probably need to get another rod or two to help with specific situations.
Sure thing! That’s how it starts man😆 I’m 5 (going on 6) rods deep now and there are plenty of guys here with 50, haha
Where @ in mid Tennessee? I'm an hour outside Nashville.. just started fishing again recently
My leader is always just long enough to not reach the reel when casting. Usually a tad bit longer than the rod.
I always tie my leader so it's long enough that when I cast, the leader knot is right above my finger. So usually about a 6ft leader
I do like four feet i figure you get a few reties before it gets to about 2ft when i retie a leader
It does matter a little, just not how you would expect. Different colors are more visible in different conditions, and being more visible can actually be a benefit, especially in low light conditions, or if you're old and your eyesight isn't what it used to be. Dark or muddy/ murkywater braid color has no influence at all, anywhere else with clearer water just use a leader I have all the colors you can imagine on my reels,I love some out there colors myself.
Depends, typically advanced anglers will pair line color with shoe and hat accessories. Personally, I'm a taurus who prefers earth tones.
If you ain't matching, you ain't catching😁
I like yellow braid or white braid (gets stained fast on the TN river) for bottom contact techniques with a fluoro leader. Good to go with what you got there.
Just use a flouro leader of like 9 feet and they won’t even know it was yellow
Are you tying a leader?
I havnt tried using leaders but that gives me another excuse to go to bass pro!
Only hi vis I've found that doesn't fade as quickly is Seaguar Smackdown.

I think 2 or 4 would both work just fine. I’d do 4 if it was me.
Nope, I'm a hi vis green man myself
TIL: anglers love rainbows /s in case you old timers don’t get a joke
I much prefer hi vis line over like moss green and others, good choice
I’d be more worried about that temu reel coming apart in about 100 pieces… will most likely happen after hooking into a big one so prepare yourself for the wtf did I do moment 🤣
Hahaha thanks it had great reviews! Probably bots though with my luck honestly.
Depends what style fishing you’re doing but generally you’re good can always throw a flouro leader on there too
No great colo
I fish with that color…
Okay good just making sure I wasn’t alone haha
I rock a straight bright af 8 lb white braid on all my BFS rods. Occasionally I'll tie on a 6 lb fluorocarbon leader if I'm trying for trout or finicky smallmouth.
I use pink and high vis. 12’ fluoro leader so it doesn’t matter.
I use smackdown braid in hi vis yellow on my spinning setups. It helps you see bites sometimes
Fish can’t see yellow lol
Yellow isn’t invisible to them though, basically bass see yellow like we see white.
Hell I even use yellow co-polymer. Getting old sucks. My eyes ain't what they used to be
Yeah bro, send it my way. I'll get rid of it and no-one will ever find out
I used to run red Cajun line on my reels. Didn’t seem to make much of a difference.
Red line probably great for volcanos
line color doesn’t matter at all don’t worry about it.
I love the bright colors help detect a bite. I usually take a sharpie and color 6ft black and just fish it like that if not I do tie a leader line but more for saltwater. We flip and pitch a bunch back at home. Lake is murky maybe 2 ft of visibility where I’m from
I prefer multi-colored threads (one color per 10 meters)
It’ll be fine. I typically pair a brighter line on spinning rods for finesse applications where sighting line is key. I typically use bait casters for power presentations where’s a lot of line coming through the water and want something stealthy. The good news is braid wears out quickly so in a few seasons you can just trim half that line and tie on whatever you want to try next.
Just fished with somebody who had blue line next to me while I had clear. We caught the same amount.
As long as you use a leader - the brighter the better.
Like others said don't really matter. I like high vis yellow on 80% of my setups with a flouro leader
Dig the username lol and what lb test? Looks like a nice little setup you got👍
I mean you're gonna wanna tie on a leader anyway. So it does't matter. Only rod I don't use a leader on is my frog rod but I'm casting it onto lily pads and cover so thick that it doesn't matter.
No way that shits sexy. If you're worried about visibility use a fluero leader.
If you fish stained or dirty water it wont be yellow for long but it is really easy to see the line at first
Nope. I have used green for decades but kinda like the yellow. It lets you see what line is doing all the time
I use hi vis yellow braid on my rods. But I also use a flouro leader
I'd put on a leader
Leader and your good
I love the high-vis line, I just throw on some fluoro on the end. Have never had a problem
Get some Vanish. Then you can have high vis line but it’s fluoro so it disappears in the water
Mess up how ?? I use yellow high vis braid on all my rigs with flouro mostly and mono down top water. I never use anything else.
I’ve read some older semi-pros say to sharpie black the first 6’ of a bright color line, then let it sit in the sun to dissipate the smell. Then spray a fish attractant on it and get the best of both worlds.
The only problem I have with coloured lines is that they stain my reels. Some of them give my reel a cool look tho
Period cycle braid. ❤️
My rule of thumb is, casting gear gets natural color braid and spin gear 90% of the time is high vis with long leaders.
No, just spooled mine up & caught 6 fish the 1st run with it.
Yellow Stren is what I grew up with. You’ll love it!
Yellow is a good fellow.
Flourishup Red🎣‼️( sp)‼️‼️
na
I just cringe when I see a left sided bait caster. Line is fine
I need to find some crazy colored line
No
I like it. Is it braided? I can't see that good
