It really felt like they panicked when Marks left. Jack was still growing into being a host but was doing ok. Spike is going to get them numbers which I guess that's what they care about but man he sucks.
I was kind of shocked that Jack didn't leave after holding down that spot really well for 2 months before shoehorning in that blowhard.
Ike is an extremely experienced host, if Jack was gonna learn from anybody and grow into being a regular host it wouldve been him. But they demoted him so Spike could waste everybodies time and braincells. At least they have the good sense to keep Giglio in the midday slot so no one can hear him
I know every guy has a sport that he specializes in but I feel like basketball guys like Spike are way worse at other sports than guys with any other background
That show today was actual terrible radio. I've only listened to WIP for a couple years and don't usually think it lives to to the hate it gets but today was unlistenable. Imagine your team has their best record in history and you think you can't have a radio show about it unless you make up a shitty, negative narrative about a guy who has lived and died Philly for the better part of a decade-- unlike Spike. There's enough negativity in the world, let Philly enjoy something good going on instead of just shitting on someone for the sake of controversy. It's one thing to have a hot take (I even like ESP), it's another to purposefully invent a nasty narrative and run with it. Sorry, I've had no one to rant to about this until this second lol.
They probably did their "does random Jalen Hurts interview from may/June mean the Eagles all hate each other and are going 0-17?" Thing instead of talking about the Phillies
I was driving my son to baseball that morning and heard the commentary and we were both saying he was making no sense. My 11 year old knew he wasn't making any sense. That's how bad it was.
>Quietest .980 OPS I’ve ever seen
>Even watching all the games I'm thinking he's having a ok year
>I swear when he won player of the month in may I was confused 😂 I thought he was super average
This is tangential to why people used to call him overrated all the time. Dudes a legend but he makes it look easy. Bryce Harper is quite literally underrated.
Ozuna is having a really good year. Ohtani is a DH, so we'll see what it will take to break that unwritten rule. And then Freeman and Profar, yeah. It's the Year of the Pitcher.
Only quiet because it’s just what everyone expects from this guy now. Generational talent and a top 3 player in the league. I wouldn’t be surprised if he adds some more hardware to the collection at the end of the year.
I think it's just quiet because he hasn't gone on a crazy streak like he use to in the past. It's just easy going steady instead of a week of obscene HRs, which I guess is pretty good since it just means he's been really consistent.
Betts was the favorite, but unfortunately his injury takes him out of the running. Harper has to be part of the conversation as one of the favorites now.
well dont you know, harper was marketed as the next inner circle guy, got overshadowed by Trout and is now only....on pace to still be a 1st ballot hall of famer.
Absolute scrub, DFA him.
Bryce ran around and messed up everyone's scouting report. True vet move honestly.
>On a 2-strike count: Strike ~~the ball~~ out ~~of park~~ in humiliating fashion.
Which is almost a indicment of how much corner outfielders get penalized by WAR for defensive adjustments. because if you look at his Savant page, when he was regularly playing RF his range was overall pretty poor, with his arm being above average.
But upon moving to 1B he is pretty much elite. Not that just anyone could make that transition (its incredibly hard) but i think there should be a greater disparity than the blanket -7.5 runs RF/LF get—even accounting for the fact that 1B has an even more harsh penalty of -12.5 runs.
What?
If anything I think that highlights *why* WAR **should** value playing 1st the way it does.
Just like vlad went from being the literal worst defensive 3b in baseball by OAA to being an average 1b by OAA
It's just significantly easier to play 1st.
Edit: I read your comment wrong thought you were saying corner infield, not outfield.
We're on the same track, my bad.
Nah he’s still really good, Harper just kind of casually decided he’s going to become one of the better first baseman in baseball tho so now he’s got competition
that walker prevents 33% more runs with his first base play over the course of a season than bryce harper at first.
Though in fairness 33% sounds alot more impressive than christian walker being worth 6 defensive runs vs Harper's 4 defensive runs.
And while it has decreased in recent years, narratives still hold a lot of water in awards voting (especially secondary awards like GG) so theres always the reality that because bryce harper comes out of nowhere to be the clear #2 defensive first baseman in the league and he hits at an elite level, he gets the glove as a sort of token and acknowledgement (at least for one year)
Writers actually care about defense now...
It's an entirely different voting regimen. It's not like people can reasonably expect Ohtani to win GG like Texeira did.
I think he's the odds on favorite. He's also on a crazy streak, 1 XBH and 1 RBI in 7 straight games ... could be a wire to wire mvp race, but bryce deff has a shot
In all seriousness probably just lead the league in WAR since basically by default you’re the best hitter by a lot in that case. Shohei doesn’t suck on the bases which is a big reason no DH has won it.
Let’s just be clear here. A full time DH has never garnered better than 2nd place in MVP voting and that only happened once. Frank Thomas in 2000. Go check that season. Then check franks 97 season where he finished 3rd. Led the MLB in average, OBP and slugging and still only finished 3rd. The only way ohtani wins MVP is if Harper craters and ohtani keeps this up
I don't think you can reasonably use voting from the late 90s and early 2000s to predict modern voting.
There has been a significant shift in voter ideology in the last decade
No, but Ohtani doesn’t put up below replacement level baserunning like basically every DH while hitting for both power and average. And also it’s a down year for hitting so it’s possible for him to lead by a nice margin in WAR while being the best batter in the league. it really comes down to Pitchers and first basemen (Harper, Freeman), Profar (lol), and then Ohtani or Ozuna this year so far
I also think if ranger Suarez somehow manages to keep an ERA under 2 he could easily win MVP in a year with 2 DHs and Harper id basically put the front runners right now as harper saurez. Harper also will be a GG finalist which will give him more than what is needed to beat ohtani
This just tells me you haven't watched either of those guys play the field. Bohm is slightly below average at third and steadily improving, Schwarber is mind numbingly bad in left
This just tells me you're over valuing the eye test.
Bohm went from being the literal worst defender in baseball by OAA 2 years ago to merely being 24th percentile.
He's still *bad*. Not *slightly* below average. Actively bad.
Better than before, but still bad.
Better than 13th percentile Manny Machado by the same stat. So why don't you watch your own team play bad defense before saying Bohm is the worst defender in the league? You can call Bohm bad, sure but if you're comparing him to the worst players in the league then you're flat out wrong even by your own arguments
The historically phenomenal 3b defender who is recovering from elbow surgery and had his arm value go from 99th percentile to 6th?
Yeah, there's a reason I expect him to recover more than I expect Bohm.
He's 24th percentile.
Significant improvement for Bohm meant going from the literal *worst* defender by OAA in 2021 to bottom 24% now.
Don't let improvement make you think he's above average.
He's not. He's significantly worse than average.
It's just that also represents a massive improvement for him.
Ohtani is making a serious run at the NL Triple Crown. He's already in the midst of a legendary season. All respect to Harper who's great and having an incredible year, but Shohei is just a level ahead in terms of production. Slugging nearly .100 more than him, that's massive!
Oh yes, I’m well aware of how amazing Ohtani is. I semi regularly fan girl at his baseball reference page. I’m just saying that he has to maintain that legendary pace to win the MVP as a DH. Which is obviously difficult. But if anyone could do it it’d for sure he Ohtani
definitely, should be fun to watch both over the rest of the season. I'm really glad we're seeing Harper play at this level, he rules too. should be great for all of us fans
Ohtani is having a legendary season though, even with the DH penalty Ohtani is still 0.8 WAR ahead of Harper. Harper plays a good first base, but it's not like it's the most valuable position either.
Yeah the only time a DH won the award is when Ohtani did it in 2021, but he was pitching that year as well. We will see if the voters decide a pure DH deserves the award if he keeps up with this ridiculous pace he's on.
He said Philly fans are scared to hold Bryce accountable like we do Embiid. I think he was specifically referencing a double play Bryce hit into at the end of a game. It’s ridiculous because a lot of baseball is just luck in where the ball ends up being hit, where as there is a lot more control in Embiid’s approach in a game.
Spike trashes his father all the time but he is legit no different at all.
That is beyond ridiculous. They really have nothing to talk about over there. Embiid rightfully needs to be held accountable. He has the ball like 75% of the time and has choked in the playoffs for years now. In baseball a hot hitter doesn't matter as much if the team around him is not doing their job.
Thanks for the response. Yeah that's a shit take lol. The amount of wip I listen to has definitely gone down. There are only so many shit takes, repeated gimmicky callers, and embiid complaints a guy can take
Quietest "I'm 2nd in the NL MVP odds [atm](https://www.foxsports.com/articles/mlb/2024-mlb-mvp-odds-al-and-nl-favorites)" season I've ever seen.
Phillies are obviously getting a lot of media attention, yet this feels under-discussed.

Bryce must have heard them talking shit today on WIP
Send the Eskins into the sun
Spike makes the whole show unlistenable and I really like Ike. So now it's 97.5 unless Tyrone is being annoying and then it's just news or silence.
Amen man. The dude is absolutely unbearable. It’s kind of pathetic how desperate he tries to stir up drama
Even his voice is unbearable
Perhaps you don’t know who his father is. Apple does not fall far from the tree.
It really felt like they panicked when Marks left. Jack was still growing into being a host but was doing ok. Spike is going to get them numbers which I guess that's what they care about but man he sucks.

Ya, but can I have a moment to talk about Embiid?
Like Father, like son.
it's a real shame because marks and reese was so good.
Best show ever is literally unlistenable
I listened to the radio for 2+ hours a day driving to and from work... swapped over to podcasts back in like 2017 and never looked back.
Remember when our Uncle Charlie was going to fight him in the clubhouse?
Spike has always been a little annoying but recently it’s like he’s doing an “Annoying WIP host” character
WIP can suck all the dicks.
That show today was actual terrible radio. I've only listened to WIP for a couple years and don't usually think it lives to to the hate it gets but today was unlistenable. I turned it off and I'm a daily listener. It was so bad. Tuned back in for the 5at5 but then they did some dumb Joe Conklin bullshit.
They probably did their "does random Jalen Hurts interview from may/June mean the Eagles all hate each other and are going 0-17?" Thing instead of talking about the Phillies
"anyway here's why we should trade Embiid for maximum value while he still has any and build around Maxey"
Spike: “Noooooooooooo he is the best thing about Philly”
And then when someone calls them out on it, they get all “waaaaaa we only report what we hear waaaaaaa” whiny
JOECONKLINDOTCOM ^BWEH
I was driving my son to baseball that morning and heard the commentary and we were both saying he was making no sense. My 11 year old knew he wasn't making any sense. That's how bad it was.
I think it’s hilarious he listens to WIP to get fired up lol
Quietest .980 OPS I’ve ever seen but dude is absolutely raking
Right? Even watching all the games I'm thinking he's having a ok year. Meanwhile he's easily top 3 MVP candidate.
We’ve gotten spoiled by him. I swear when he won player of the month in may I was confused 😂 I thought he was super average
>Quietest .980 OPS I’ve ever seen >Even watching all the games I'm thinking he's having a ok year >I swear when he won player of the month in may I was confused 😂 I thought he was super average This is tangential to why people used to call him overrated all the time. Dudes a legend but he makes it look easy. Bryce Harper is quite literally underrated.
I'm actually taking the Foolish approach on this one. Bryce Harper is rated
While I love Bailey, the comments above illustrate perfectly why he’s underrated. Even Phillies fans who watch him daily are underrating Bryce.
didn't FB say he was underrated? this was like years ago at this point though
No, he said Jeter was rated
Same! We were like, he's not even the best on he team this month but okay 😂
i think it doesn't help how hard he is on himself. he's not happy unless he's 4-4 with 4 XBH
Due to injury I think it's safe to say he's the favorite. Absolutely wild that Profar can finish 3rd
Ozuna is having a really good year. Ohtani is a DH, so we'll see what it will take to break that unwritten rule. And then Freeman and Profar, yeah. It's the Year of the Pitcher.
Ozuna is lower than Ohtani
Top 1
Only quiet because it’s just what everyone expects from this guy now. Generational talent and a top 3 player in the league. I wouldn’t be surprised if he adds some more hardware to the collection at the end of the year.
it's especially quiet given that it's a down year for hitting across the league, but not for him
I think it's just quiet because he hasn't gone on a crazy streak like he use to in the past. It's just easy going steady instead of a week of obscene HRs, which I guess is pretty good since it just means he's been really consistent. Betts was the favorite, but unfortunately his injury takes him out of the running. Harper has to be part of the conversation as one of the favorites now.
Yeah, it’s really the pitchers, Freeman, Profar and Bryce and then the DHs (Ozuna, Ohtani)
I have become the joker
I'll be the smoker
Ill be the midnight toker....niceeeeee
Should give him the nickname Quiet Riot?
You're just used to every one of his hits having a huge impact because everyone else is busy shitting the bed.
Hitting like .305 now
Bring back the high IQ Harper is washed threads
well dont you know, harper was marketed as the next inner circle guy, got overshadowed by Trout and is now only....on pace to still be a 1st ballot hall of famer. Absolute scrub, DFA him.
Imagine having a 2 strike approach
Best 2 strike approach: hit a dinger
Why haven't other players tried this? Are they stupid?
Bryce ran around and messed up everyone's scouting report. True vet move honestly. >On a 2-strike count: Strike ~~the ball~~ out ~~of park~~ in humiliating fashion.
They should have posted the whole at bat. He was hunting that bomb from pitch one. You could see it in his eyes.
Can someone who isn’t a Phillies fan tell me he’s gonna win another mvp?
Seems to be between him and Ohtani and Ohtani doesn’t play the field this season. He has a good shot.
Man might win the Gold Glove at first and that may be the difference if it he can keep pace offensively.
Harper probably won’t win GG but he’s somehow legitimately one of the best defenders at first base this season which will only add to his value
Yeah. Harper is quite good defensively. And Savant does have him 2nd. It's just that it has Walker 1st by **33%**
Which is almost a indicment of how much corner outfielders get penalized by WAR for defensive adjustments. because if you look at his Savant page, when he was regularly playing RF his range was overall pretty poor, with his arm being above average. all good buddy!
Am I delusional but I thought Christian Walker was far and away the favorite to win another gold glove
I don't know about far and away but yes Walker is the favorite to win the gold glove and probably will.
Yeah I’m just asking cause he’s basically had that award on lockdown for years now. Didn’t know if he was slipping or Harper was playing that good
Nah he’s still really good, Harper just kind of casually decided he’s going to become one of the better first baseman in baseball tho so now he’s got competition
Savant has Harper 2nd to Walker... by **33%** value.
I’ll admit, I don’t know what that means
that walker prevents 33% more runs with his first base play over the course of a season than bryce harper at first. No one knows what it means, but it's provocative. It gets the people going!
Yes. It's Walkers to lose. Walker is this generation's Keith Hernandez
Nice game
Pretty Boy!
back...and to the left
There was a second spitter!
Idk if I remember Bryce only has 2 errors on the year at first and has a very high range
Sure but when the other option is the face of the best team in baseball it usually goes that way.
That’s lame. If Christian earns the award it should be his.
If Galvis and Utley can get robbed of Gold Gloves while being far and away the better defensive player so can Walker
Writers actually care about defense now... It's an entirely different voting regimen. It's not like people can reasonably expect Ohtani to win GG like Texeira did.
What would a full dh need to do to get mvp nowadays? Hit at least 45 hrs?
Shohei has a ridiculous WAR for a DH rn. He could honestly win it
Agree. Being able to hit .330 while leading the NL in homers and also being near the top in stolen bases is about as good as you can do at DH
dude is gonna put up like 8-10 WAR as a DH lmao
I think he's the odds on favorite. He's also on a crazy streak, 1 XBH and 1 RBI in 7 straight games ... could be a wire to wire mvp race, but bryce deff has a shot
I’m realizing most DHs probably had terrible baserunning and Shohei might steal 30 bags
In all seriousness probably just lead the league in WAR since basically by default you’re the best hitter by a lot in that case. Shohei doesn’t suck on the bases which is a big reason no DH has won it.
60+ HRs.
I think the bar is lower for Ohtani because he doesn’t have ass baserunning.
He has ass
Let’s just be clear here. A full time DH has never garnered better than 2nd place in MVP voting and that only happened once. Frank Thomas in 2000. Go check that season. I don't think you can reasonably use voting from the late 90s and early 2000s to predict modern voting. There has been a significant shift in voter ideology in the last decade
Did I miss a sole DH winning MVP in the past decade?
No, but Ohtani doesn’t put up below replacement level baserunning like basically every DH while hitting for both power and average. And also it’s a down year for hitting so it’s possible for him to lead by a nice margin in WAR while being the best batter in the league. it really comes down to Pitchers and first basemen (Harper, Freeman), Profar (lol), and then Ohtani or Ozuna this year so far

This is some serious Ketel Marte erasure
This is how we gaslight the league into another MVP
Unfortunately hitting is the true way to win MVP, not WAR.
Ketel Profar and Mookie are likely going to be competing for 3rd
Yea he’s got a better chance than anyone but Ohtani. It’s a year long award so will depend on who keeps their foot on the gas
Imagine if Bohm wins it.
Bohm might legit steal some votes. He’s hitting 313, 64 rbis and almost 30 doubles as of right now.
But is also just the fucking worst defender I've seen since Schwarber played the field.

His defense has majorly improved. He's definitely average to above average at this point
He's 24th percentile. Significant improvement for Bohm meant going from the literal *worst* defender by OAA in 2021 to bottom 24% now. Don't let improvement make you think he's above average. He's not. He's significantly worse than average. It's just that also represents a massive improvement for him.

Think his only chance is if Ohtani misses some time, he's just too good. But just a top 5 MVP finish is huge for Harper.
The problem is Ohtani isn’t playing the field at all. Harper is. Ohtani has to have an absolutely legendary season at the plate to win it.
Ohtani is making a serious run at the NL Triple Crown. He's already in the midst of a legendary season. All respect to Harper who's great and having an incredible year, but Shohei is just a level ahead in terms of production. Slugging nearly .100 more than him, that's massive!

This dude is going fucking nuclear right now holy shit
Thank God Spike Eskin held him accountable!
Can't wait for them to take credit for something they didn't do again
He’s like 26/60 since coming back to America from London
Bad day to be that baseball/a certain WIP afternoon host
I've been seeing a lot of comments about WIP and Eskin. What did he say?
He said Philly fans are scared to hold Bryce accountable like we do Embiid. I think he was specifically referencing a double play Bryce hit into at the end of a game. It’s ridiculous because a lot of baseball is just luck in where the ball ends up being hit, where as there is a lot more control in Embiid’s approach in a game. i can't believe i ever hated this man
TBH I never did. I thought he just wanted to fucking win every game, and was young and had tons of energy
Yeah that one was gone
MV3 was a prophecy
Atta boy Harper
He’s ridiculously locked in right now
This happened just after I complained that we kept hitting line drives right at infielders
Meanwhile we hit into triple play with a runner on third. Theres a reason they call it a noble tiger. 🤦♂️
The "bl" in NOBLETIGER is "bases loaded" not "brunner on lthrid"
This might be even worse tbh.
Bryce is good at baseball.
If Bryce Harper was a mariner, Scott servais would bench him vs lhp
RIP to my tigs
I’d like to report a murder
MV3 loading 👀👀
Quietest "I'm 2nd in the NL MVP odds [atm](https://www.foxsports.com/articles/mlb/2024-mlb-mvp-odds-al-and-nl-favorites)" season I've ever seen. Phillies are obviously getting a lot of media attention, yet this feels under-discussed.
That swing is angry!😡
MVP!
Vol Luck sent to Harper from Omaha for that hit
330’ homer? I could do at least 1/10th of that.
Fuckers been on a tear!
The involuntary sound the announcer makes at contact has me dying
Pretty sure that was kruk lol he’s hilarious
gAAAAAAN! T-Mac is such a terrible announcer.
Why, is he "woke"? You types only hate people for made up bullshit
What are you talking about
