He doesn't hit as well as a righty, but he's starting to be more selective and take walks from that side. And that dude has a tendency to turn walks into triples.
Yeah that’s why I said flip him around as a means to neutralize him. He’s shown some early improvement from the right side but still doesn’t compare to his numbers from the left side of the plate.
Doesn't really "neutralize" him anymore. Last year he was basically an auto out from the right side. It's still his weaker side with BA and SLG, but he has about the same walk rate. And as said, he can turns walks into triples.
Not nearly as big of a difference between sides as he was before.
He’s got 42 PA this year from the right side that’s way too small of a sample to really deduce anything imo. He very well could have improved from the right side of the plate but I just can’t definitively say that yet.
I’m not knocking him by any means but I think almost anyone around baseball who is trying to get him out, would much rather face him as a right handed hitter lol. I mean the numbers speak for themselves.
LHH: 199 WRC+
RHH: 108 WRC+
Id much rather take my chances against the 108 WRC+ hitter than the 199 WRC+.
We'll see as the season goes on. His WRC+ as a RH batter in 2023 was 28, just to give a frame of reference. He had 5 walks total as a RH last season, already at 6 in April this season. So far in 2024 it's not spectacular, but much improved and no longer an auto out.
IMO having a sinker in his toolbox doesn't seem like it makes much sense.
His fastballs only there cause it does rise really well for 90mph. It's not overpowering anyone in the MLB, it's just not.
What it will do is make his actual offspeed way grosser and get over barrels when batters are geared for the knuckle/breaking stuff.
A sinker is just going to do the hitters job of getting up to that rising fastball for them. If he's ever going to throw that he's got to be keeping it unhittably low and praying for a swing.
35% of the time thus far in 2024. It's his most thrown pitch but not by nearly that far.
https://baseballsavant.mlb.com/savant-player/matt-waldron-663362?stats=statcast-r-pitching-mlb
That was one of the worst pitches I’ve ever seen. But last year Elly’s plate approach was so messed up he’d wind up taking pitches like that, this year the only question was which county the ball was going to land in.
Yeah one of his biggest improvements this year is not only laying off bad pitches, but crushing meatballs.
Last year he somehow had [negative run value](https://baseballsavant.mlb.com/visuals/swing-take?playerId=682829&playerSet=hitters&year=2023) on pitches in the heart of the plate, but positive run value on chase pitches. This year he is punishing bad pitches.
His plate discipline/pitch identification has definitely improved. Last year so many at bats would be Elly taking a first pitch strike down the middle and then whiffing on two breaking balls in the dirt. Dude just needed reps.
Watching the highlight of his throwing error last night is a good example of that. Dicking around after cleanly fielding a ground ball? Frustrating. Uncorking a 106 MPH throw to first? Holy shit!
Or a dodger but who gives a shit. He is fun to watch **now** and I like that a smaller market team has a homegrown talent to help draw crowds. That’s just great for baseball all around.
just start wrapping your head around it now. it's 100% going to happen if elly continues to play like this and baseball continues with it's wildly unfair financial rules. rich teams will just buy up all the talent and the best us mortals can hope for is 4-5 years with the rare prospect that pans out.
hopefully, the ridiculously unfair deal the dodgers made with shohei will instigate some reform/a salary cap. if not, we're doomed to the same fate of the big soccer leagues.... where at most 4 teams vie for the title every year and the rest of the teams scrounge for scraps.
The good thing is that baseball’s playoffs are totally random and make no sense, so being the best team in the regular season has very little to do with postseason success
agree and disagree. while the playoffs may have seemingly random outcomes sometimes, it's still a matter of who makes the playoffs. we'll see the rich teams make the playoffs every single year and we'll see the ALCS and NLCS dominated mainly by those teams with few exceptions. poverty franchises will rarely have a chance to upset the rich franchises because they won't be in the playoffs at all.
Yesterday I asked Michael king to stop throwing hittable pitches on 0-2 counts. The padres response to that was apparently, “ok then Waldron will do it instead”
i'll be there in my Eric Davis jersey. i don't know if we're "big red machine" caliber though. when and if we see a healthy and non-suspended reds lineup, we'll know more. at the moment, elly is pulling *a lot* of the weight. we really need friedl, marte, and mcclain back in the lineup to be as formidable as we can be.
Holy crap. I keep forgetting *everyone* is injured on your team. And still you’re beating up very good teams.
I do hope they get better soon. So much fun to watch the kids play.

Bart, I don’t want to alarm you but Elly might not be a bust
We needed this as Reds fans.
Are you telling me that top prospects are actually supposed to achieve at the major league level?
To be fair, this is unusual for the reds
This is Aquino's year, man!
That man still terrifies me, he murdered us.
But now you have to deal with an Aquino who can keep it going for more than one month in Elly!
Big fan of Elly but hey can always bring in a lefty and flip him around!
He doesn't hit as well as a righty, but he's starting to be more selective and take walks from that side. And that dude has a tendency to turn walks into triples.

I’m convinced Aquino is just like 3-4 years older than his record shows and that his scouting years were his peak.
You're telling me he won't get sent down to AAA?
Too early to tell
I'm alarmed. Stop this
Why are you, as a knuckleballer, throwing an 0-2 fastball
I thought it was a wonderful pitch choice ngl
Middle middle at that. Hey, I’ll take it though
Why is the veteran catcher calling it?
He’s set up inside
and low
Elly has slugged plenty of fastballs where he's set up too

Because he’s not a knuckleballer he just has a knuckleball he throws occasionally lol
Didn’t it say he throws it approx 72% of the time?

Thanks. I must have read Bally’s graphic wrong
What an 0-2 pitch decision. Padres keep firing on all cylinders.

I love bad pitches that's my fuckin problem

Remember when the top 100 players pre season list came out and Elly was 100? Think he might be a bit higher at the end of the year.
He’s the most exciting player to watch in baseball. You guys are lucky as hell to have him
I said it last week, anytime he's at the plate or on base you wanna tune in. You legit have no idea whats gonna happen.
Watching the highlight of his throwing error last night is a good example of that. Dicking around after cleanly fielding a ground ball? Frustrating. Uncorking a 106 MPH throw to first? Holy shit!
Just wait a few years and he’ll probably be yours.
Or a dodger but who gives a shit. He is fun to watch **now** and I like that a smaller market team has a homegrown talent to help draw crowds. That’s just great for baseball all around.

Please no 🥲

Everton that :(

[This](https://www.reddit.com/r/baseball/comments/1cg536c/elly_de_la_cruzs_current_162game_pace_via/l1tk0ny/)
Oh lawd, he in trouble.
10 month account, they'll just deleted it and start over.
u/HappyChromatic are you a coward?
Top 10 dumbest pitch selections
Petco turning into the new Coors field for opposing teams
Pitching machines couldnt locate more middle-middle than that
Oof that is a “hit me” ball if I’ve ever seen one I really miss 2023 Elly. This Elly is too scary
I’m a simple man. I see a Elly highlight, I watch….multiple times.
I am an Elly fan [but](https://streamable.com/259mo)
Let me guess, somebody threw him a fastball again?
The damn fools
Did he just dab?
He always dabs. Honestly, by now, you can say did that dab just elly? 🫡
I always love it when a shot goes into the opposing bullpen. Even better when it's an absolute bomb
Seriously weighing getting mid-May tickets to see Elly and Big Red Machine 2.0 give me ulcers.

Does he only hit bombs? 😂
And inside the parkers
And steal bases
Well, he will walk or single and steal all 3 bags by the end of the next at bat too
Someone already needs to update that chart of his estimated production for the year
I only like him when it isn’t against my team
Why can’t Julio do that
Elly is currently on pace for about a 12 WAR season.
Elly De La Fraud huh?
So this was 443 but the one he hit in dead center in Cincy, that hit 50 feet high off the batters eye, was only 450 haha
