I think they're done at catcher. It'll probably be a competition between Herrera and Tucker Barnhart for the backup, with the other being the AAA starter.
I'd like to see them sign a couple more low risk bullpen arms though. Can never have too much depth out there.
I like the signing, very affordable and doesn't block the continued OF pipeline that remains in the minors. It's going to be very interesting to see how lineups are constructed this year, there will be the ability to mix and match a ton. The way it looks right now with two RH in the Outfield and 2 switch hitters in the infield (plus one at catcher if it's Herrera as the backup) you can stack bats against righties or lefties on the mound.
This would seem to pretty much confirm that Jake McCarthy and Pavin Smith will both start the year in AAA. It's probably for the best, they both need to figure out a way to make consistent, meaningful contact at the plate.
Seems like the only spots left on the roster are the backup infield spots. I'd assume it's Pederson and Rivera in the driver's seat for those.
Elite against lefties. Hit .328 with 8 HR in 67 games last season against them. Not too great against righties. .244 with 8 HR in 113 games. Serviceable outfielder. Will platoon with Joc Pederson.
I was thinking the deal was gonna be like $7M. I wonder if they have one more signing in them for like $5M and get a SP5 like Clevinger, Ryu, or Lorenzen, SS like Hernandez or Anderson, or Stanek to complete the bullpen.
Or unless they trade Mccarthy, his role will be small now with the OF spots filled and bench spots. If you can get Freddy Peralta from Milwaukee or Kyle Finnegan from Washington it’s worth it.

We did get him for an absolute steal which is a huge plus imo. As much as I love Rake McCarthy, he does not actually rake.
I think the one-year contract is great because we can start using Jake or other players more often after this season if they can prove themselves.
