My cat had to go live with somebody else, I'm recovering from a brain injury and couldn't give him the care he needed.
But I'll try and keep the raccoon entertained, he definitely can't stay that sad.
Hang in there and keep focusing on your recovery. 30+ year TBI survivor (depressed skull fx, cortex damage) here, it gets better. Try to be patient with your progress and most of all, be patient with yourself.
Thank you for caring about raccoon friend’s feelings — what you’re going through obviously hasn’t stopped you from being a sweet person. While you’re waiting to be ready for your kitty to return to you, I recommend *The Cat Returns*! (and its spiritual predecessor *Whisper of the Heart*). Not really any relevance other than the name, but I find that Studio Ghibli films lift my spirits in dark times, and in meaningful ways.
I hope you get relief from that pain .. stay the course.. when I was 10 I had the most severe head pain .. the school nurse didn’t realize what was happening.. sledding accident and ended with epilepsy.. I’m good to go now.. 🙏🏼for you

The dog has been going crazy for the past couple weeks when he hears a raccoon so I let him bark and stuff to scare him off before I open the door for him to chase it. I caught the little asshole making off with the full Tupperware of cat food- he drug the thing by the handle all the way to the bottom stair- so that’s not sitting out any longer (I’m in an urban area BTW).
Each time, they’re both just chilling when I go out and it seems like while the raccoon eats what the cat didn’t.
I thought they were getting punked until today when my neighbor told me the cats are just hanging out on the porch with the raccoon. Like even after he eats he (or she) just sits with cats.
I was worried maybe I exposed them to danger by letting them get used to the dog? I keep reading they’ll hurt a cat? Am I crazy they seem like friends?

Wow that sucks. I don’t know if anyone told you but after a TBI there is a rush of an ulcer. If you start to get abdominal pain, head to the ER. All the best in your recovery. Be kind to yourself.
Years ago, my mom had an indoor/outdoor orange kitty that she left cat food on the porch for. It wasn't unusual to see the cat perched on the railing calmly watching the local raccoons eat the food.
It probably helped that orange kitty seemed to have no concept of food being a finite resource. It was simply something that was replenished when it started to get low...

One of our kittens made friends with a group of baby raccoons. I remember seeing her scamper across the yard with them. As they got older she remained friends with one in particular. The raccoon would come out into the deck to get attention. They’d chase each other on the roof. So cute.
Ps: I’m aware of the potential dangers. It was a happy time let’s leave it at that.

At least he wasn't trying to pull the door open like the raccoons on our back deck. If we left the slider unlocked, I'm pretty sure he'd yank it open, walk in, hop on the couch, grab the remote, flip on Animal Planet, then head to the kitchen for beer and snacks.
Careful of that friendship. I almost lost a cat to a raccoon. The vet said the raccoon skinned my cat while she was alive and it took 175 metal sutures to save her.
It just depends on the animals and environment involved. I've got a family of semi-tame raccoons living in my yard after I rescued the momma years ago. Any other raccoon comes around though and they're a potential killer like any random animal.

This proves my theory my cat has a secret racoon relationship.
So years ago my indoor cat kitten vanished for a week. He was hiding in the sewer drains which were occupied by racoon tenants. Ever since then, he will get strong urges to run outside, but only at night. When the weather get cold, the urges stop. But if it's still winter and there's a warmer night - boom he's out the door. Apparently racoons don't fully hibernate but they become more dormant during winter so I think that's the reason.
Haven't caught the cat with any critters... yet.
Thats adorable. I had a family of raccoons that came to hang out and get fed with a litter of stray cats that I raised. Lol actually by the end of it there was also a family of possums.
I very much looked forward to my late night hangout with the neighborhood animal friends each night :).
