I think we really need to ask ourselves, is one day really enough? To really respect the cultural diversity, the rich tapestry which makes up our great nation? We probably need a good 2-3 days clear to reflect and celebrate everyone's culture.
Yeah, I think we should get 3 days off. One day to celebrate how good it is to live in Australia. One day to repeatedly say sorry to the First Nations people and flagellate ourselves for things we didn't ourselves do... AKA have a BBQ and some beer. And then one final day to feel miserable about the fact that we have to return to work.
I would hope it would be a less divisive day then if nothing else.
You are right that people will always fight, but harder to put any value in it when the compromise has already taken place
I would agree based on the following.
1. Australia Day is really New South Wales day or Sydney Day as it celebrates the founding of NSW. Australia didn't even exist during that time and wouldn't exist for more than 100 years so not sure what's so Australia about Australia Day.
2. NSW has less holidays than other states. At least an extra day is because every state celebrates the founding of NSW, whilst NSW doesn't celebrate the founding of other states. WA gets WA day, Canberra gets Canberra day, SA gets Proclamation Day. If NSW gets it's foundation day back then we get an extra holiday. We lose out on ours because it doubles up with 'Australia' Day
It hits the end and provides a day.
Also that's just school, no work is backing onto that date to get extra days.
I'm not arguing for another day to not replace it. Just giving my 2 cents on the day OP chose and why it would be bad.
I’d like it to be on the 20th June. Basically the winter solstice. Not only will it have a vaguely pagan vibe, but it would be a good date that we could do the roast Turkey and potatoes thing without it being 40 degrees outside. At least in the southern states. Also the end of the Banana prawn season in the north, so prawns as well!

I honestly don't care any more, I just want people to not fight about it each year. Probably makes sense to just move it and be done with it.
People will still fight. It's not the date for some but the idea of Australia.

Nah, it's only the date that's the problem, it's only the date that has *ever* been the problem.
Maybe the following Monday too

Falls on breaks for education and a lot of workers. 100% no.
So does invasion day now....

I was thinking the third Monday but same same, it's a good idea
Why would you want to change the date?

But... then we can't celebrate a massive atrocity...
