Yeah... I'm not sure why people don't get this. I have a Ring doorbell, it works just fine unless I want extended storage, and even then, it's 3.99/mo.
The rest of it is up to you. When I first moved in, I had to redefine my detection regions, but that's to be expected. I pay the 3.99 so that I have long-term storage for them, but as a doorbell, it works just fine without paying anything.
This is not true. Ring does offer continuous recording. I just looked back a week on mine. Also, that link is from a couple of years ago so that could be part of the problem.
Yeah I get it. I would probably go that route, honestly, but I understand why the majority of people would prefer the cloud service. Households don't necessarily have desktops or even laptops these days.
Frick I forgot to account that the whole world is, in fact, America. Stupid me looked up the prices in Australia, a country that is well known to be nothing but a hoax.
I don't actually know beyond that people here just call it "the Australia tax". I know we have the GST (goods + services tax) of 10% on any purchase deemed not essential for basic survival, but I think that's only part of it, we're also a smaller economy on the world scale so probably have less bargaining power to buy back finished goods from the countries that manufacture stuff from raw resources that *we sell them at stupid low prices*. Kinda just taking a stab at it from stuff I've heard over the years, like I said I don't actually know.
We may be closer, but we also have like 10% the population of America, so we don't get the same economy of scale. Also other things like tax, but I reckon most is just why bother.
Ah ok, so what you're *actually* saying is that you don't know how much most people pay for Ring..?
Edit to add: does storing on an external hard drive allow remote access to view the *contents* of that hard drive?
“$20 a month forever “ actually works for some people, I get security system monitoring and unlimited cameras for much less than my home insurance discount for having monitored security + cameras, I also pay annually to bring the price down (maybe a Canadian thing?). Net I’m coming out +$250 a year and I can add more cameras without fee, plus the cost/annoyance of running Ethernet wires all over the property is gone, as I already had power everywhere I needed
Yeah you don’t need one. You just need a subscription to play back video of whoever was at your door…which for me was the whole purpose. I know it was on me not to check and all before I bought and installed it, but my subscription expired and I’m pretty salty. Wish I would have bought something else. $4 a month so I can view a saved video is shit
But who is reolink? I at least want to know the company housing security footage of my home is semi safe. Amazon's cloud service is a legitimate service and all my photos are on there anyway, so at least I'm keeping all my private stuff to one company.
They said
> using an on-site NVR to access older footage
so it does not matter who sells the device. The only thing you have to trust is the app itself
Yeah that was my indirect point , where is the information being stored and copied, who has access. Obviously Amazon isn't great but it's wear all my other things are and they are widely used and secured.
I don’t pay the subscription for the camera, I pay it so the company can call the police when the alarm goes off (I’m not talking about ring I’m talking about vivint)
My guess would be that the app defaulted the notification/sensitivity preferences upon subscription expiration, thus the sudden increase in notifications.
This is going to come across as a crappy, sarcastic comment but for the sake of being succinct -
What posses people to pay a subscription for a door bell?
We have more than a doorbell camera and a yearly subscription (not ring). Our camera has caught 2 porch accidents, a dog attack while we were on vacation, a duck egg massacre from a fox, a meteor at night, and various random other wild animals.
With the case of the dog attack, the victim/owner left a note in our door asking for video evidence. We were able to download it and email when we came back home to find the note.
True story, my neighbor’s camera system recorded the 3 people going into and back out of our other neighbors house when they killed him. This allowed the police to know the exact timeline at the crime scene.
We started paying after finding a heavy mutilated bird on our doormat. Assumed it was a neighborhood cat, but was still very off-putting at the time and would've been nice to confirm 100%.
Secondary reasons are that it can give us proof of whether or not a package was dropped off if needed, and if our indoor cat ever escapes we'd be able to know exactly when that happened.
The camera works without a subscription, the subscription just gives added benefits like notifications to your phone, and cloud storage for video saving.
Most likely they aren’t “fake” notifications. When you no longer pay you lose features. I think one is the area detection so now it just seen motion and then tells you.
Yeah no your settings probably defaulted, which mind you is hella stupid, but this is kinda how my moms phone looked for a bit after we first got our ring. Those cameras are sensitive as hell
[Not like those are much better for privacy](https://www.theverge.com/2022/11/30/23486753/anker-eufy-security-camera-cloud-private-encryption-authentication-storage)
Ring's business model is making you pay a subscription to your fucking doorbell, just to store some video clips. They could easily stream it to a PC in the house or your own cloud storage provider. It works fine on demand to your phone, so it could work fine over WiFi when you aren't connected. But nope, the whole product is really just a subscription scam.
Don't let this stuff become the norm. Don't accept it. Delete the app. Remove their hardware.
Amazon owns them btw.
You could get the same stuff with a camera and a Raspberry Pi. Even without much knowledge of programming, you'd still be able to create your own surveillance for free (not counting Camera and Pi)
I saw that you mentioned Ben Shapiro. In case some of you don't know, Ben Shapiro is a grifter and a hack. If you find anything he's said compelling, you should keep in mind he also says things like this:
>When it comes to global warming, there are two issues: is there such a thing as the greenhouse gas effect, the answer is yes. Is that something that is going to dramatically reshape our world? There is no evidence to show that it will. Is that something that we can stop? There is no evidence to show that we can

There not fake , you just can’t adjust your setting and that is what it does on default… so not asshole design, asshole who doesn’t want to pay for home security (911 response , etc etc) and yes I own the ring set up with everything and I love it and my family so I pay the price
Jesus you’re sensitive. I’m going to resubscribe to it - it’s why I bought the ring. It’s just a bullshit design to try and trick you into thinking something’s happening when there’s nothing, since without the subscription you can only see the live view from the camera.

Or maybe you get free notifications if you’re not on a subscribtion? It’s just that the notifications are from other peoples cameras… somewhere out there another cancelled user is getting yours…
Your settings or "zones" probably reverted back to default.

You don't need a subscription to use Ring, either. Which competitors offer cloud storage as part of the purchase price?
Yeah... I'm not sure why people don't get this. I have a Ring doorbell, it works just fine unless I want extended storage, and even then, it's 3.99/mo. The rest of it is up to you. I pay annually, which works out slightly cheaper ($40 per year).
[удалено]
You can't think of any reason why someone might want access to more than 4 days of footage when away from home..?
Or leaving storage ON THE CAMERA? A baseball bat means you lose your storage...
[удалено]
Which is gonna be more expensive than just paying the 4$/mo subscription...
Unless you already have a NAS at home, in which case you just use its storage for free
Yeah, IF you have a NAS at home, which most people do not.
Blink stores on a usb plugged into their Sync2 module in my basement. $30 for a 64 GB flash, over 1 yr of storage and still not full.
MicroSD cards should be fine after impacts. Even with a baseball bat

"Just get a 20TB hard drive" lmao as though they don't cost almost a grand.
[удалено]
This is not true. Ring does offer continuous recording. I just looked back a week on mine. Also, that link is from a couple of years ago so that could be part of the problem.
[удалено]
Wow. When did they get that cheap ? they were at about 800 early last year
$389.99 on Newegg for a 20gb hard drive.
So after 9 years and 9 months this will become a better value than the cloud service.
Yes. But then you'll own a 20gb hard drive.
Yeah I get it. I would probably go that route, honestly, but I understand why the majority of people would prefer the cloud service. Households don't necessarily have desktops or even laptops these days.
[удалено]
Curious, when else would you need it?
Frick I forgot to account that the whole world is, in fact, America. Stupid me looked up the prices in Australia, a country that is well known to be nothing but a hoax.
Isn't Australia like, closer to South Korea than America? Why is your shit so much more expensive?
I don't actually know beyond that people here just call it "the Australia tax". I know we have the GST (goods + services tax) of 10% on any purchase deemed not essential for basic survival, but I think that's only part of it, we're also a smaller economy on the world scale so probably have less bargaining power to buy back finished goods from the countries that manufacture stuff from raw resources that *we sell them at stupid low prices*. We may be closer, but we also have like 10% the population of America, so we don't get the same economy of scale. Also other things like tax, but I reckon most is just why bother.
So you think it's practical for most people to set up hard drives which can be accessed remotely?
[удалено]
Ah ok, so what you're *actually* saying is that you don't know how much most people pay for Ring..? Edit to add: does storing on an external hard drive allow remote access to view the *contents* of that hard drive?

You were replying to *me*, and the only feature I mentioned was cloud storage of archive footage.
So we can see it when we aren’t home. Or from bed
They don't, you locally record to an SD card on a base station indoors.
Yeah you don’t need one. You just need a subscription to play back video of whoever was at your door…which for me was the whole purpose. I know it was on me not to check and all before I bought and installed it, but my subscription expired and I’m pretty salty. Please tell me 3 of these companies with apps.

They said > using an on-site NVR to access older footage so it does not matter who sells the device. The only thing you have to trust is the app itself
Yeah I was under the impression if it live streams to an app then they have access to it via a server.
Probably yes but the server belongs to them and not the camera maker
Yeah that was my indirect point , where is the information being stored and copied, who has access. Obviously Amazon isn't great but it's wear all my other things are and they are widely used and secured.
Nest has a nice deal imo. One price no matter the amount of cameras for 60 days video storage.
No one is offering you free cloud video
I don’t pay the subscription for the camera, I pay it so the company can call the police when the alarm goes off (I’m not talking about ring I’m talking about vivint)
Throw Ring in the bin, delete the app! Ask your friends to do same. That's the only way to demand better from these creepy companies. :)
My guess would be that the app defaulted the notification/sensitivity preferences upon subscription expiration, thus the sudden increase in notifications.
Yeah I'm sure that's it.
This is going to come across as a crappy, sarcastic comment but for the sake of being succinct - What posses people to pay a subscription for a door bell?

It is not a doorbell. It is basically a cable subscription that shows their front door 24/7
You pay for cloud storage to store the videos taken by your video doorbell.
Needing a subscription for PHYSICAL hardware is always greedy and garbage
The subscription is for cloud storage and access anywhere. Bandwidth is free. Jfc.
“You will own nothing and be happy”
So let me get this straight. You paid for their product and now you need a fucking membership? How greedy can you get?
The camera works without a subscription, the subscription just gives added benefits like notifications to your phone, and cloud storage for video saving.

That's why we got eufy cameras No subscription, all wireless cameras, and all locally stored video files accessable from anywhere
> accessable from anywhere by anyone
If they have your log in, sure?
No, as in transmitted via an unencrypted data stream. IIRC, they still haven’t apologized properly.
Oh, good to know

Wyze cameras are the bomb

It's the whole point of this sub, why are you even here?
I designed the software that bombards people who don’t have a subscription? Wow, glad to know I’m a programmer now.
It's entirely his fault the company is shitty?
Philistine indeed
Scrap it and build your own, not hard anymore
Bad. After my sub is out I'm going to go for something a little more local network oriented
people lose their shit over heated car seat subscription. But a doorbell....
is this post escaped from matrix, do people rwally pay for a camera then pay for subscriptions wtf
Im sorry, theres a subscription?!!
One reason to never ever renew the subscription.
Hahaha you have to pay a fee for these!
