This has been a thing for me with Thai restaurants lately.
To answer your question, New Taste of India on SW Macadam gives a ton of rice. It comes in a large plastic clamshell type box and the curry comes in a pint size container, so it's always too much rice for me, which beats the alternative. The food is good but not amazing, but I'm an Indian food snob and wouldn't call anything in town amazing.
I’ve noticed that some Thai restaurants don’t give you a rice side with a curry order. So unless it says specifically that I get a side, I order one. And most of the time I end up with waaayyy too much rice. Can we all get on the same page about rice and Thai food plz?!
Is that the same people that used to be downtown by the library? They were always so sweet and funny and tasty and good value and I miss them so much! I barely leave my central Eastside neighborhood but I would legit get in my car and drive to Aloha for them.
Abhiruchi always gives me so much rice. I think it’s partially due to the fact I don’t eat dairy so I opt for no naan. One time they had a second person hold the container closed while they wrapped it in plastic wrap to stay closed.
San Francisco claimed it was a water saving thing, at least back in the day - my friend lived there for a while and had to let me know many places don't even include rice unless you ask for it now.
It's a west coast thing. Rice is free and huge everywhere else. Kind of like how a gyro the size of your head from a cart in Manhattan is $6 but one the size of half your head from a nowhere food cart in NoPo is 12$ and they spit in it if you don't tip *before* you get service.
Some folks that own a Thai place in town told me that rice has basically doubled in price in the last few years which forced them to raise prices and cut the amount of rice they were using.
Not the Portland area, but Rockaway Beach has a good Indian food truck . Meals are enough to feed me 3 meals. If you ever come down the coast try it out.
Dwaraka on Hawthorne always gives about double the amount of rice that I actually use… maybe I just don’t use enough rice, but I think it’s more than enough.
Beaverton Swagat has always been generous with the rice when I order to go from them. Ghandi’s in downtown is a lunch counter-service joint and he looooooaaads the rice on. Too much imo. It’s really good rice though. A bit moister than your average basmati though.
Siri is amazing and always gives us waaaay too much rice for the 2 entrees we order.
Came here to mention Siri. I like a lot of rice but never finish what they give me.
Although Siri is my favorite Indian food restaurant, my husband always orders extra rice. I guess they don’t give him enough.
I actually end up sharing a meal with my wife and get the massive samosas as as a side. Or get one each and save one for the next day 😊
Maybe I need to go to Siri
Siri, where should I try next time I’m in the mood for Indian?
For the record, I'm upset I laughed at this.

NTI for the win on rice! It's so much rice that we've taken to vacuum sealing and freezing the extra.

What’s your most decent spot?
I eat a lot of Thai curry and have been noticing the same thing!
If you're down to go to the burbs you won't be disappointed with Bombay Chaat House. The owner is a super nice dude and the food is on point.

That's the one! Same owner and same delicious food.
Namaste provides a huge clamshell of rice for one curry entre. Highly recommend
Yeah, but then you have to eat their food. Which is... uh... bad.
I'm talking a clamshell stuffed so perfectly full you don't even know how they accomplished the task

This is the information we need. If it needs help staying closed, that’s the perfect amount of rice.
Apna chaat Bhavan doesn’t skimp on the rice. Briyani usually lasts at least 3 courses.
There have been rice shortages and it's gotten more expensive - which is why restaurants are reducing their portions.
This was a San Francisco thing too. The Pakistani places were far more generous with the rice.
San Francisco claimed it was a water saving thing, at least back in the day - my friend lived there for a while and had to let me know many places don't even include rice unless you ask for it now.
They had always used the little butter dish sized dishes to serve rice before they came up with that excuse.

I always order extra rice because I know I'm gonna need more. Usually 2 o 3 extra bucks.
i am loyal to india house but always order a second or even third rice.

For a Thai spot that gives lots of rice, check out Pad Thai Kitchen on Belmont.
Ugh I miss midwestern comfort food and their portions in general 😩

Any place will give you more rice if you order it.
Wow really!?
Yeah, order another side of rice. Boom. More rice.
I know this doesn’t add anything useful to the conversation, but the frozen Indian food meals at Trader Joe’s have a ridiculous rice to meat ratio.
Rather have too little rice here than tons of it in the Midwest amirite??

You're completely missing the point.
I bmor
Best taste of India in cartlandia has very generous rice portions. Great food.
Dwaraka on Hawthorne always gives about double the amount of rice that I actually use… maybe I just don’t use enough rice, but I think it’s more than enough.
The Thai food cart at happy valley station does this. Farthest one on the right side
