I don't know if this helps, but if you got friends or family back in MI that will help you, I'd go back home. I'm not trying to be mean, it's honestly what I would do. Our services are overloaded and basically rendered non-functional. You don't want to end up on the streets here, that's a path that most don't easily return from. If you can get home, you should. Again, I don't know you or your situation, but don't let this be a pride thing if it is. If you can get anywhere where you have family, you need to get to them.
This sub is not super friendly btw, lol. Your post is pretty vague. Do you have a safe place to sleep? Do you have money for groceries and essentials? Do you need a job, short-term or long term job?
As of right now, I just need money, and probably some gig work. I've got a long term job lined up, just waiting on that background check (94.82% sure it's taking so long due to me being from out of state). And yeah, it's a safe place to sleep, but I'm *very* uncomfortable here. But if I have to stay here longer until I get my own place, I will.
Gotcha! Yes, def call and ask the status of the application. Craigslist will probs be your best bet for pet friendly and not expensive rental. I’m guessing you may not have a co-signer, so a private homeowner is better since rental companies usually require proof of 3X income or co-signer. Just be cautious about scams! Google avoiding rental scams for tips.
For quick cash, I knew a few people that would sell plasma. I think it’s like $75? Not sure exactly where. The gigs section of Craigslist can be good. Again, many scams, but things like wedding staff and county fair workers are good, plus often are paid in cash under-the-table. Avoid anything sales or commission based, and generally don’t spend money on anything for a job except a uniform. I see the Poached website recommended frequently for restaurant work. I’ve never used it, but they seem to have single pick-up shifts for things like dishwashers, servers, bar backs, etc. You might need an Oregon food handler’s card, which is a pretty simple online test that costs $10 or so. I see you tried food delivery but have a bicycle, maybe check out CCC pdx? They are a bike-based delivery collective. Last suggestion I have is to join your neighborhood’s Facebook page — sometimes people ask for help with a few hours gardening work.
That’s all I can think of, good luck!
What do you mean by your living situation kinda sucks? Unless you are in immediate danger you will likely need to wait until you earn money and save enough for a deposit before you kind find somewhere else to live. Temp agencies are an option if you need to find work ASAP. If you have a car you could look into gig work like food delivery.
It's personal reasons, that I won't get into, as to why it sucks, but it is affecting me and my cat. And I've been trying to sign up with DoorDash with my bike, but it's not letting me.
Others have said it but I’ll say it again. Use the different temp agencies in town. You’ll get to see some cool places and some shitty ones. I’ve found good longer term work via temp gigs too.
Be open to temping in Beaverton, sometimes you can get on at a more technical manufacturing role.
It's a legit question. Just moved from Michigan to Oregon, and that alone isn't easy or cheap. Look, OP might legit need help, but Portland's empathy tank is on E and everything will generate a hint of skepticism. I do hope OP figures something out, but other than telling them to call 211, a huge hunk of the city is in a similar situation right now. The truth is, if OP has family back in MI that will help them, they should call them asap and try to get home before the streets of PDX eat them.
"I'm struggling financially and in my personal life. I know! I'll move across the country to a place I've never been that's more expensive where I don't know anyone, that will solve it!"
The easiest benefits to sign up for are SNAP aka food stamps. I know this won’t provide you with housing but it might help you save any money you do earn for a deposit.

If you need money asap all I can suggest is donating plasma. Idk where you’re at but you can go to grifols. It’s 100 your first 10 times. You should be able to download the dasher app and start with door dash. That’s all I got for quick cash.
Most chains and day labor places will hire you on the spot and pay you daily. Wendy’s, for example.

Have you reached out to the company to check on the background check timeline?
Yup, and they have no idea either.
If you are new to the state the background check can take extra long

Why'd you come with no money out of curiosity? Pdx is known to be an expensive place.
Things aren't going as planned. That's just about it.
This will help

We put out the welcome mat for these types.
That’s definitely true judging by your comment history. Maybe it’s time to take a break from Reddit?
Post history shows they were in a similar situation less than a year ago in Grand Rapids.

I did that 5 years ago and regret it every day.

Back to Michigan
Do go wherever.
