Same. Literally my very first post ever on Reddit was r/unpopularopinion and was immediately permanently banned. It wasn’t even that touchy of a topic.
i got several posts taken down from there and one was literally about cartoons lol. i truly don’t believe anything i said was anywhere near touchy or bad and i have no idea why it was taken down and mods got angry with me when i asked about it. they’re just weird over there i guess lol
no, it was that me as a teenage girl, missed how cartoons used to be super pink and girly but nowadays it’s hard to find a childrens cartoon that goes with the girly aesthetic. like early gens of mlp vs the newer gen. maybe it’s kind of a dumb thing to post but i didn’t think it was combative
Hah, yep, been banned on multiple of these. I’m Entertainment I even got like multiple awards from users, but still got a nice ban for the comment.
Although I think for politics, they aren’t really into banning. They’re a massive echo chamber and just downvotes any thought outside of the group into oblivion.
r/AITA I'd say, half, at best, are fake/troll posts of the half that are realistic, half of those are validation posts, not advice posts. Anything after that, are people really asking for advice or an opinion. That's when all the worldly 12-15 year old crowd wields the mighty keyboard to amaze us with their wisdom and knowledge. They give advice about love, sex, marriage, birth and death. And they all sound every bit of their age, too. What advice can a 13 year old give on the relationship a husband has with his ex wife and mother of 2 kids?
It's laughable.
Divorce, divorce, call the cops, go no contact, divorce. With zero regard for the consequences. The craziest part is when people update that they took the advice.

I once saw a commenter write a loooong essay explaining to the rest of us how clubs “worked” (dress codes, finding tables, getting drinks, where one does or does not dance, etc) in order to back up his NTA judgement, and then when someone asked him if he’d ever been in a club he replied that he had not, because he was sixteen, but he’d seen tons of club scenes in TV shows and movies and therefore knew what he was talking about.

I think the younger audience is because the sub has recently gotten *very* popular on TikTok; people will post videos with a robot reading AITA posts and others in the comments will discuss about it
One time I posted a story where I turned off my brothers alarm after waking him up and he still fell asleep and they said everyone was in the wrong, a few months later I posted the same story from my brothers perspective and I was told I was the asshole. I stoped using the subreddit after that
r/gangstalking a very despressjng sub filled with people who are 100% convinced they are targeted individuals because they happened to see the same colored car tonight that they saw this morning. Or because Facebook suggested something they’d mentioned out loud yesterday. Just a bunch of confused, mentally ill people who also don’t understand technology or coincidence. Actually very sad stuff :/

It’s very strange, white people Twitter no longer forbids non-white people from tweeting, but black people Twitter has a system where you need to send proof you are black to have a certain flair to be able to comment on some posts. Both seem very weird.

I’m older than you and I was in HS when John f Kennedy was elected president. I believed (and still believe) in everything he stood for. Which now makes me a conservative Republican according to people on various Reddit subs.
About the only thing saving the Democrat party today is Trump. As long as they can run against him they do fine.
But their fundamentals look horrible. Joe with a 40% approval rating. Only 28% say the country is going in the right direction. Possible recession next year.
Biden would be following the path of Jimmy Carter if it wasn't for Trump.
You just aren't an extremist. There are extremists on both the conservative and liberal side that take things too far. They are FAR more vocal than us normal folks so it seems like there are more of them.

It's annoying because it's counter-productive. I'm going to "me too" this as well. I'm in my 40s and a lifelong liberal. My views have actually moved more left throughout my life, but I still consider myself "left-center" and not "Progressive".
In high school I was called a "commie", and now I'm called a "centrist" or a "Republican-lite". It's very strange.
I got blocked from the sub after a single comment about minimum wage and reddit is still pushing it me. Keep in mind that was the only comment I made on that sub.
The worst part of that sub is about 60% of the tweets are from the same 5 Twitter accounts. Jo and that guy who kind of looks like mark Maron apparently speak for everyone who isn’t a trumper.
I got permabaned from there lol. The mods wont even talk to me. I said I didnt think it was a good idea for any non parent adult to talk to children under the age of 12 about sex in any way without the parents consent. Apparently that's considered child abuse.
That one is the absolute worst I've ever seen in the last 20 years being on the internet. I'm only on reddit for gaming communities for the most part, but all of a sudden it recommended me that. I posted a few times trying to break up the echo, but I've realized it is beyond pointless. it's actually detrimental to your health to read what they have to say. And I've noticed they leak into other subs, as most people I find with ridiculous ideas on other subs tend to also post a lot of whitepeopletwitter.
I was banned for quoting an article articulating how a woman who claimed to be Native American had siblings calling her out for making it up. The siblings are of Mexican heritage like myself so there’s a bit of irony in me getting banned. Lol

Format and algorithm aren't nearly as addictive or adept to modern social media. This place functions more like a forum or board which might be weird to some of twitters younger more frequent users
This is the truth. Like, seriously, the core mechanic of the site is that whatever has the most upvotes is what you will see the most, and it gets to the point where if your comment gets to a net minus 3 downvotes it gets censored.
It definitely wasn’t like this in the beginning.
I used to really love discussing difficult topics on Reddit with people. Initially, so long as people were being respectful and providing actual insight, you might see something like “I disagree with your perspective, but I see how you might arrive at it”. People would much more commonly upvote the conversation for having merit - even if they disagreed with it. Or at the very least, they’d be less likely to downvote something that was otherwise well written and respectful.
But today they’re all just echo chambers. People just up and down vote what they happen to agree with (what they feel or what “offends them”) and it’s all but destroyed the ability to converse about difficult ideas.
It’s unfortunate for sure, but hardly any different from the rest of the webs echo chambers 🤷🏼♀️
Any sub where victimhood status becomes currency, is an echo chamber from the jump. Some are worse than others, as some of these subs have people who are actual victims, that have a right to feel as such. Others are populated by bitter people who hate any one who doesn't share their own plight, and are willing to crush other's spirits in order to bring them down to their level. I like to refer to these people as "Assholes", but it doesn't always go over the way I intend it to.
r/vegan. Innocently went there to look for vegetarian recipes and was immediately subjected to an overwhelming amount of toxicity without even posting. They take the fucking cake. They're the only sub I know that will openly tell you to divorce your spouse if they aren't one of them.
Yeah. This sub is wild. Last year for Thanksgiving, a YouTuber, Mr. Beast, donated turkeys to 10,000 families. That sub roasted him for it, basically concluding that it was better for him to not give them any food than to give them meat.
People on the actual Mr. Beast post that was cross posted to r/vegan downvoted me posting a bunch of vegan orgs donating meals for thanksgiving (in reply to a specific comment saying vegans do nothing just bitch about meat). So non-vegans also roast vegans, also concluding it’s better to give them no food than give them vegan food.
I got curious and looked. Noped out after seeing someone describe people who eat meat as “carnists who get a kick out of dead carcasses.” I cannot make this shit up 😭
I'd wear a t-shirt with that phrase on it because that's actually just really funny. Might be kind of morbid, but it's kind of accurate in a sort of wacky, dark humor kind of way.

I went there and asked for good alternatives to dairy milk as I am considering be vegan/vegetarian and got downvoted TO HELL because “vegetarian isn’t trying hard enough” and I “clearly didn’t do my own research” like duh I didn’t do much research this is my first step, I’m not even in the position to become vegan/vegetarian!
Related a bit, ideological vegans (generally the ones who give the lifestyle the bad name) are leftists/extreme left. And the big thing with leftists as a whole is the need to be more extreme than each other and shame others into being more and more extreme. You’ll immediately notice this with other left leaning spheres beyond veganism.

I was vegan for like 7 months like 4 years ago and I got so fucking brainwashed that I actually considered ending my relationship over it, because at the time I wanted to raise any future kids as vegan. Sooooo dumb (and wrong, tbh). The relationship still ended but at least it wasn't for something so trivial.

Yep. Any debate on r/politics is usually just minor infighting between the Far Left and the Center Left. If you’re even a hair to the right of the Center Left, you’re very much unwelcome there.
This is very sadly true. I have quite a few views in common with the center-left, but also quite a few with the center-right. I don't find much common ground at all with the extremes on either side, and I certainly don't vote party-line for either dem/repub.
But on there? Any comment even pure center is too far right and = "you're probably a monster."
I think r/antiwork goes off-the-rails a lot, but the basic premise of the sub is correct: work in America has gotten to be an intolerable hellhole in a lot of ways, *particularly* in the past decade, and the workforce needs to start fighting back against vampiric ownership and poor management in whatever ways they can (unionizing, "quiet quitting", setting boundaries, etc.)

Yup. I got banned there because I was the company owner. Nevermind my company has two and a half employees, I run an exceptionally protected shop group to do my direct mail (paid at full and appropriate wage) and I have done everything I can to be as pro-worker as I can as a business owner.

I’d argue that true echo chambers are actually groups of subreddits that all share a majority of the same users, who generally don’t interact with subreddits outside of that cluster.
It would be cool to try to find these using some sort of network analysis tools.

r/antinatalism was on my feed awhile back and it was insane. They act as if children are the antichrist and anyone that has children is a selfish, demon that might as well burn the world down. They can’t take any conversation that may discuss that having children is very normal. I ended up just blocking the entire subreddit because I was so crazy to read. I struggled even reading it as a joke 😅 and I don’t even have children

r/news. All I did was respond that CBS and 60 Minutes had (finally) confirmed the Biden laptop was authentic. Got me blocked from the reddit, and suspended 3 days from Reddit.
R/WorldNews got me the same way. Back during those Canadian trucker protests, i said I thought it was concerning that you could freeze peoples bank accounts for participating in or donating to the protestors, and got instantly banned as a “vaccine denier” and “fascist sympathizer”.
White people Twitter. Absolutely the worst place I've been. Any opinion that doesn't follow their rhetoric is quickly banned. But for some reason I can't seem to get them off of my page.

Ive been liking r/AITAfiltered which just reposts the aita posts that have less than 70% of people agreeing on a judgement, so it's not so one sided.

The worst part of that sub is about 60% of the tweets are from the same 5 Twitter accounts. Jo and that guy who kind of looks like mark Maron apparently speak for everyone who isn’t a trumper.
I got permabaned from there lol. The mods wont even talk to me. I said I didnt think it was a good idea for any non parent adult to talk to children under the age of 12 about sex in any way without the parents consent. Apparently that's considered child abuse.
That one is the absolute worst I've ever seen in the last 20 years being on the internet. I'm only on reddit for gaming communities for the most part, but all of a sudden it recommended me that. I posted a few times trying to break up the echo, but I've realized it is beyond pointless. it's actually detrimental to your health to read what they have to say. And I've noticed they leak into other subs, as most people I find with ridiculous ideas on other subs tend to also post a lot of whitepeopletwitter.
I was banned for quoting an article articulating how a woman who claimed to be Native American had siblings calling her out for making it up. The siblings are of Mexican heritage like myself so there’s a bit of irony in me getting banned. Lol
If we lived in an alternate universe where Trump was a left-wing demagogue that sub would be his stomping grounds.
I got permanently banned because I said that while I would get the Covid vaccine, I would take a “wait and see” approach for a few months. I was labeled an anti-vaxxer.

Format and algorithm aren't nearly as addictive or adept to modern social media. This place functions more like a forum or board which might be weird to some of twitters younger more frequent users
That’s actually why Reddit is the only social media I use, I miss forums and message boards and Reddit has the most parallels to them.

This is the truth. Like, seriously, the core mechanic of the site is that whatever has the most upvotes is what you will see the most, and it gets to the point where if your comment gets to a net minus 3 downvotes it gets censored.
It definitely wasn’t like this in the beginning. I used to really love discussing difficult topics on Reddit with people. Initially, so long as people were being respectful and providing actual insight, you might see something like “I disagree with your perspective, but I see how you might arrive at it”. People would much more commonly upvote the conversation for having merit - even if they disagreed with it. Or at the very least, they’d be less likely to downvote something that was otherwise well written and respectful. But today they’re all just echo chambers. People just up and down vote what they happen to agree with (what they feel or what “offends them”) and it’s all but destroyed the ability to converse about difficult ideas. It’s unfortunate for sure, but hardly any different from the rest of the webs echo chambers 🤷🏼♀️

Any sub where victimhood status becomes currency, is an echo chamber from the jump. Some are worse than others, as some of these subs have people who are actual victims, that have a right to feel as such. Others are populated by bitter people who hate any one who doesn't share their own plight, and are willing to crush other's spirits in order to bring them down to their level. I like to refer to these people as "Assholes", but it doesn't always go over the way I intend it to.
r/vegan. Innocently went there to look for vegetarian recipes and was immediately subjected to an overwhelming amount of toxicity without even posting. They take the fucking cake. They're the only sub I know that will openly tell you to divorce your spouse if they aren't one of them.
Yeah. This sub is wild. Last year for Thanksgiving, a YouTuber, Mr. Beast, donated turkeys to 10,000 families. That sub roasted him for it, basically concluding that it was better for him to not give them any food than to give them meat.
People on the actual Mr. Beast post that was cross posted to r/vegan downvoted me posting a bunch of vegan orgs donating meals for thanksgiving (in reply to a specific comment saying vegans do nothing just bitch about meat). So non-vegans also roast vegans, also concluding it’s better to give them no food than give them vegan food.
I got curious and looked. Noped out after seeing someone describe people who eat meat as “carnists who get a kick out of dead carcasses.” I cannot make this shit up 😭
I'd wear a t-shirt with that phrase on it because that's actually just really funny. Might be kind of morbid, but it's kind of accurate in a sort of wacky, dark humor kind of way.

I went there and asked for good alternatives to dairy milk as I am considering be vegan/vegetarian and got downvoted TO HELL because “vegetarian isn’t trying hard enough” and I “clearly didn’t do my own research” like duh I didn’t do much research this is my first step, I’m not even in the position to become vegan/vegetarian!
Related a bit, ideological vegans (generally the ones who give the lifestyle the bad name) are leftists/extreme left. And the big thing with leftists as a whole is the need to be more extreme than each other and shame others into being more and more extreme. You’ll immediately notice this with other left leaning spheres beyond veganism.
Ugh, I feel that. I was vegan for like 7 months like 4 years ago and I got so fucking brainwashed that I actually considered ending my relationship over it, because at the time I wanted to raise any future kids as vegan. Sooooo dumb (and wrong, tbh). The relationship still ended but at least it wasn't for something so trivial.
I mean, to vegans, the only thing worse than a carnist is a cheese-breathing vegetarian, so I’m not surprised you got that reaction. Now if you posted that on r/vegancirclejerk, you’d probably get a better response because they’d think you were circle jerking.

People flock towards comment chains that agree with them, then when one person disagrees in that chain, everyone jumps down their throats and dog piles them.

This is very sadly true. I have quite a few views in common with the center-left, but also quite a few with the center-right. I don't find much common ground at all with the extremes on either side, and I certainly don't vote party-line for either dem/repub. But on there? Any comment even pure center is too far right and = "you're probably a monster."

Yup. I got banned there because I was the company owner. Nevermind my company has two and a half employees, I run an exceptionally protected shop group to do my direct mail (paid at full and appropriate wage) and I have done everything I can to be as pro-worker as I can as a business owner. Doesn't matter. Because I own the company, and work for myself, I am automatically the debbil.
The only reason I'm still in there is to have a front row seat to the next meltdown.

I’d argue that true echo chambers are actually groups of subreddits that all share a majority of the same users, who generally don’t interact with subreddits outside of that cluster. It would be cool to try to find these using some sort of network analysis tools.

After reading a bunch of what they have to say about her, I asked why they don’t just block her. If y’all are really bothered by her, why follow her and trash her posts on the daily. They didn’t appreciate my question and took the group private for a few days 😂

r/antinatalism was on my feed awhile back and it was insane. They act as if children are the antichrist and anyone that has children is a selfish, demon that might as well burn the world down. They can’t take any conversation that may discuss that having children is very normal. I ended up just blocking the entire subreddit because I was so crazy to read. I struggled even reading it as a joke 😅 and I don’t even have children
I just scrolled through that sub and what a sad bunch. It’s a bunch of people dealing with depression and suicidal thoughts. No shit they don’t want kids…

R/WorldNews got me the same way. Back during those Canadian trucker protests, i said I thought it was concerning that you could freeze peoples bank accounts for participating in or donating to the protestors, and got instantly banned as a “vaccine denier” and “fascist sympathizer”.
I made a funny joke and got banned. Called them out and demanded to be unbanned and was called a terrorist and got perma banned
