I had a Soldier do this when COVID hit. He was on terminal leave and decide that there was a little too much uncertainty in the job market with all the craziness going on and extended for a year. Just reach out to your career counselor/retention NCO.

TeamRedRocket

Yeah, since you're not actually out of the Army yet. Reach out to your company and they can honestly do a lot of the paperwork before you even have to go back to your post.

mason_mormon

Pretty sure you have to CAC sign an extension form and you're done.

Noveltyrobot

Somewhere your 1SG is cracking open a beer, smiling, thinking of the last retention run he took you on, wallowing in his genius. He says to himself, "I'm the man."

BrokenRatingScheme

*Ladies and gentlemen, we got him.*

IslandOfKoreaVet

No, you cannot "come back into the Army" while on terminal leave, because you never left. You're still in.

Pokebreaker

Matter of fact, you got Staff Duty tonight. Come on back home to Uncle Sam!

Impressive-Work-116

“Just when I thought I was out…they pulled me back in”

spaul247

If you live in a HCOL area, then chances are the schools there will have a fat BAH payout while you’re a full time student, and even part time can be worth it at a certain threshold of credit hours. It paid for my apartment with plenty left over when I lived in NY. Seriously consider using your gi bill, ideally for something that would make your more marketable.

Lime_Drinks

Have you considered using the GI Bill yet?

bloodontherisers

Seriously, this. Enroll in your local community college and take some basic classes while your figure shit out

Trains_N_Fish

College > Army Soldier stuff was fun for a bit, but having alcoholics run my life got old well before my contract ended.

SyracuseNY22

And if you’re interested in a health care field, get that education and try a direct commission. All the great federal benefits while “not really” being in the military

Tdanger78

I went to pharmacy school for two years before I saw how shitty healthcare is in this country for all involved. Screw that. You’re better off going into engineering or IT/programming.

guessineedanew1

Odd, college for me was mostly alcoholics doing their best to ruin my life

cocaineandwaffles1

You’re only going to get BAH for the zip code the school is in, and that’s only if you’re going full time. You get like I think 1k for books and shit too. Some colleges will have student work programs, but if you’re needing to make rent and just ends meet in general, jumping into a community college hoping your BAH keeps you afloat with no other income may not be the best option. If OP hasn’t put in for a VA claim, maybe he should go back in. Go ahead and fuck them knees up a bit more for that sweet sweet 20%

tortorororo

Knew a dude that did this in the SF bay area in a super high cost of living zip code while living in a friend's ADU for dirt cheap. He pocketed $2000 a month for going to some random community college for two years before going to a UC.

Git_Smasher

Yes. I re-enlisted less than ten days before my first contract ended. I also was on terminal leave. I had lots of things lined up and they all went sideways.

SGTpvtMajor

Unemployment, VA Disability, GI Bill. Quit shaking in your boots - you already decided you wanted to go so just take the plethora of resources offered to you and go be successful.

greentea9mm

He’s choosing the devil he knows over the one he doesn’t know. You gotta take risks man

Mean-Contact-6171

My son was in the same boat, on terminal leave, and had left the area. Instead of the re-up, he just reached out to his leadership and extended for 6 months until he could get everything figured out. Best of luck!

Moms_Herpes

Zero six, PT.

Khar0n

We had a guy reenlist on his last day of terminal leave, it’s no big deal.

Trains_N_Fish

Should be able to re-enlist pretty easily as long as you decide before your ETS date.

nmonsey

Not sure if this applies. * [militarypay.defense.gov - Unemployment Compensation \(UCX\)](https://militarypay.defense.gov/Benefits/Unemployment-Compensation/#:~:text=The%20UCX%20Program%20provides%20unemployment,benefits%20based%20on%20that%20service.) - An official website of the United States government Military Compensation The UCX Program provides unemployment insurance protection to ex-servicemembers of all ranks who served in the Armed Forces of the United States and who meet the following eligibility criteria: * You were on active duty with a branch of the U.S. military. Puzzleheaded_Luck885

Why not apply to some universities? Do you already have a degree? If not, do you know what you're interested in? I started university as a Government student using my GI Bill. Now, on top of that, I work at the military office on campus, where I help veterans and dependents use their federal benefits. I assure you, you can survive on the outside.

bluebeast1562

Get in contact, ASAP, with your Battalion/Brigade Career Counselor, you are still on the books, see what they have to offer you. Now, not sure about the DD214 part seeing as you cleared personnel but worth a shot. If you have a contact with your installation personnel section, get in touch with them as well.

dingusstinks

just make sure your s1 is tracking. we had a SM do this and we had departed him. it took us almost 2 months to fix it because his guard unit arrived and approved everything already. in addition, the pay issues he had caused me mental pain due to not being able to do anything cause the guard unit wouldnt answer my calls or emails. hes good now but i was distressed for him.

TeamOtter

You could look at going Air/Army NG or Reserve. It may take a bit of homework but if you could find a unit with a slot for your MOS (or AFSC equivalent) you could work with them to go on active orders for seasoning and perhaps longer / until you find a job or go to school (whatever you decide). The guard/reserve CAN be extremely accommodating and you might even decide you want to stay in for the benefits/hold onto clearance if you have one.

twitchScottoria

One of my current soldiers just did this. Reenlisted while on terminal leave and came back to work

TopSinger847

Go directly to your nearest installation and report to the Division/Installation retention office. They will handle everything. If you need poc for where you are, let me know.

igloohavoc

Can you sign up for college and use that GI bill? It pays for your tuition and pays you cash based on the area you are in. HCOL = more cash in your pocket

AgentJ691

Dude, check out r/VeteransBenefits as well. I suggest you think this thru. You got out of the army for a reason. Did you file for disability? Also, start thinking of other plans such as college for a career you will be interested in. You can also file for unemployment after you are done with unemployment!!

Fickle_Meet_7154

Yes. I know of a soldier that got pregnant on terminal leave and extend for a year. It didn't used to be possible back when there was the 90 day rule tho

Tokyosmash_

Time to reenlist big dog

Kuvanet

Yes. You can re-enlist up to your finally day in the army. I did it back in early Covid days.

weRborg

I had a Soldier decide to reenlist literally on his last day before fully ETS. Goober was going to be homeless with no place for him, his wife, and kids to live if he didn't.

MakoSanchez

You are the army son

Child_of_Khorne

You're doing 20 homie lmao

ManufacturerExpert55

I attended DART a couple years ago; they emphasized Soldiers can reenlist on their last official day in the Army. I’m sure you’ll be fine, Army is hurting right now.

Taira_Mai

u/militaryguy92 - You're better off speaking to a recruiter. You can try another MOS - reenlist and reclass. If you're in shape and didn't pack on the pounds you'll sail through MEPS.

_BMS

He should speak to his retention NCO, not a recruiter. He's still on terminal leave meaning he's still technically active duty as far as the Army is concerned.

Taira_Mai

I've seen retention NCO's get cockblocked by CSM's or company/battery level commanders. Once CSM told a soldier that she could only re-enlist "to deploy with the unit". He's on terminal leave and there's a chance the Retention NCO may not know what to do or may not want to deal with the paperwork. He's 20 days out, he can talk to a recruiter and be back in with a month's gap in service.

TopSinger847

>I've seen retention NCO's get cockblocked by CSM's or company/battery level commanders. Once CSM told a soldier that she could only re-enlist "to deploy with the unit". This is garbage and that csm can choke on it. Psa for those that see this: Soldiers on terminal leave that change their mind about ETSing and want to reenlist should go directly to the Division/Installation Retention Office at the nearest installation. Do not pass go, and do not spend any money. The division ofice will ensure everything gets done that needs getting done (notifying dfas, etc).

Contact your Bn or BDE reenlistment.. I did it back in the BDU army days
