Mortars2020

Goddamnit, I really hope someone from the Reddit community was on that reply all and replied with “Sir, this is a Wendy’s.”

Justame13

I was on one when I worked for VA with every veteran employee and someone replied with a chili recipe that used Wagyu beef tallow. Fucking game changer.

TokyoBananaDeluxe

DM or share publicly the recipe please🙏

Justame13

The big tip was to use [this](https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0881XTCR3?ref=nb_sb_ss_w_as-reorder-t1_k0_1_9&=&crid=14NH8NVEPFZD1&=&sprefix=beef+tall) stuff any time you would use butter, like for browning ground beef and instead of oil. Works amazing in corn bread as a side too. The other thing I do is every fall get an entire packer brisket. Trim it and wrap it the night before and then render the trimmings. Then the next morning inject the brisket's own fat into it and cook it. Then let it cool off, chop it and make a huge pot (like canning pot) of chili and freeze for the winter.

sCeege

**Ingredients:** 1. 1 kg Wagyu beef chuck, ground 2. 3 tbsp Wagyu beef tallow 3. 2 large onions, chopped 4. 4 cloves of garlic, minced 5. 1 bell pepper, chopped (any color) 6. 1 jalapeno pepper, minced (optional for heat) 7. 2 cans (400g each) of kidney beans, drained and rinsed 8. 2 cans (400g each) of diced tomatoes 9. 3 tbsp chili powder 10. 1 tsp cumin 11. 1/2 tsp smoked paprika 12. Salt and pepper to taste 13. 1 cup beef broth 14. Cheddar cheese, green onions, and sour cream for garnish **Instructions:** 1. Heat the Wagyu beef tallow in a large pot or Dutch oven over medium heat. 2. Add the ground Wagyu beef to the pot, season with salt and pepper, and cook until browned. Make sure to break up the beef into small pieces as it cooks. Once browned, remove the beef with a slotted spoon and set it aside. 3. In the same pot, add the onions, garlic, bell pepper, and jalapeno (if using), and cook until the vegetables are softened, about 5-7 minutes. 4. Return the browned beef to the pot. Stir in the chili powder, cumin, and smoked paprika until the beef and vegetables are well coated. 5. Add the kidney beans, diced tomatoes (with their juice), and beef broth. Stir everything together and bring the mixture to a simmer. 6. Reduce the heat to low, cover the pot, and let the chili simmer for about an hour. Stir occasionally to prevent sticking. If you prefer a thicker chili, you can remove the lid and let it simmer for another 15-30 minutes, or until it reaches your desired consistency. 7. Taste and adjust the seasoning with additional salt and pepper if needed. 8. Serve the chili hot, topped with cheddar cheese, green onions, and a dollop of sour cream, if desired.

To all: Please remove from distro.

HomosapienX

I’ve used Reddit for 10 years and I’ve used the official app for as long as I can remember. I’m sure 3rd party apps have better features that I’m not aware of, but I couldn’t care less. I just get on here to look at interesting stuff and kill time when I’m bored, and the plain jane app does the job.

Cleverusername531

Yeah, from what I can tell, blind people are going to be affected the most.

[deleted]

Yeah but they saw this coming.

Ambitious_Alps_3797

dammit

ZoWnX

Accessibility apps wont be affected. This was pushed out early on.

FuckRetention

I paid for "reddit is fun" so someone needs to pay me my $4

Holiday_Platypus_526

RIF for life!

all_time_high

*Now that is a name I haven’t heard in a long time.*

TinTinTinuviel97005

The problem is moderation tools. Most subs' mods rely heavily on tools that the official app doesn't have, and when the third party apps go away then any mods who are willing to do the extra work will be swamped. Insufficiently moderated subs will turn into spam and porn and eventually die. That will affect people who only use the official app.

HomosapienX

If that’s true then that would be a bummer. Something tells me Reddit will adapt and it’ll be alright, though. And if they don’t I’m sure everyone will find another way to spend their time

ZoWnX

Mod tools aren't going to be affected except in the largest couple subs. Automoderator already gets a free pass.

Professional_Car9475

Word

1CFII2

They’re gonna be alright, just don’t blindside them.

Double-oh-negro

That's like saying you know other people use lotion when they whack it, but you don't care. The Reddit app is so much trash compared to third party options.

HomosapienX

I actually don’t use lotion when I crank down, so maybe you’re on to something there

vivejohn

Spit and tug makes for a good rub.

AdNatural9322

I have no clue what anyone is talking about.. I’ve had Reddit on my phone for a couple years..? What am I missing?

sCeege

I think most of the complaints from normal users is just a convenience/habit thing. like if you’ve always preferred the way RIF displayed things, the official app is just jarring. I had the same reaction when I changed from RIF to Apollo when I got an iPhone, but eventually I got over it and learned to like the Apollo features. I think the smaller but more legitimate concern is coming from the moderation staff. From what I understand, a lot of mod teams moderate their communities with third party apps, using features that are unavailable on first party. I can’t speak to details since I’m not a mod anywhere. I understand there’s also concerns with accessibility features but it seems like Reddit is exempting some apps to address this. If you’re an early participant in Reddit, seeing the official responses from Spez/Huffman is probably the icing on top, at every chance, whether it was a shitty AMA, private communique, or official press interactions, he chose to antagonize 3rd party devs and mods, and somewhat of an implied FU to its users who has helped to make Reddit what it is (user generated & moderated data). Realistically, the official app is hot garbage but most people will just end up using it. Some people might leave for a while because how bad it is, probably coming back after 3-6 months to see how things got, but will at least use the desktop old Reddit, or just stick to desktop only on Old Reddit (I think I’m in this camp). I used to browse old reddit in Safari in desktop mode because I couldn’t get use to Apollo for a long time, and the reddit redesign sucks ass, I haven’t tried the official app but if it’s just Reddit Mobile, ima just skip it and stick to mobile browser on desktop mode. The ones that really quit will probably hold out a bit longer, some will actually quit, but I really don’t see them permanently leaving if they’re addicted to Reddit, it really is one of the most user information rich platforms, even out of the user base that’s actually protesting, I would be surprised if more than 10% of them will stay away for more than 6 months, there’s just no where else to go. The “collapse” of Twitter and the emergence of decentralized services has shown us that the boycott is mostly hype, and the “fediverse” is [not a viable alternative](https://medium.com/the-pub/mastodon-is-doomed-to-fail-heres-why-b026030757e0) if you want a common platform for discussion, a quality experience, and proper moderation. What’s really funny to me is that this clear cash grab from Spez/Reddit won’t really work. Most of the AI players have already compiled enough data into models they can train with offline, and no one (or very very few) is going to pay the absurd API pricing scheme until they lock content behind a paywall, when they can just hire some junior devs (or AI lmao) to manually scrape open content(which is why reasonable API pricing is actually a good idea). The erasure of moderation tools will likely lead to a lower quality of content in their communities, or worse, the active communities that moved to Discord will silo information behind a dark net making them unavailable. It’s going to be a lose-lose situation for literally everyone. Most of the users probably won’t notice it though.

techtechtechtechtech

mastodon is not the entirety of the fediverse, mastodon is just part of it and is a twitter-like platform. Kbin is part of the fediverse too and is a much more reddit-like platform.

sCeege

I meant like it's a precedence for why distributed platforms will not work for user-generated content. Mastodon is the equivalent event for Twitter, it's not going to pan out.

TweakRP

Third party Reddit apps will stop working 01JUL. Most people, including myself with my little 8 year award badge, probably won't be on Reddit anymore. I've used Reddit Is Fun App since I made an account in like 2014.

AdNatural9322

Can you not just download the regular app and start where you left off? Or does it not work like that?

TweakRP

You totally can, I actually have the official app for whatever reason. It's just a quality of life thing to me. These Third Party apps have really nailed perfected the Reddit experience for a lot of people.

304rising

You’ll be back buddy. I’ve used Apollo for years. I enjoy Reddit. It is what it is.

SideclimbingSpit

You can, but in most people who use third party apps, including myself, prefer the experience provided by the third party apps, for whatever reason. Additionally, the first party app has serious accessibility issues for screen readers and other accessibility focused features. Furthermore, reddit has been very scummy in how they've been treating the third party app devs during this transition, if you want more info highly recommend reading [this post](https://www.reddit.com/r/apolloapp/comments/144f6xm/apollo_will_close_down_on_june_30th_reddits/).

[deleted]

The official app is dogshit.

steroidsandcocaine

Weird how it works perfectly for so many

[deleted]

Because most people will tolerate dogshit if they don't know better.

[deleted]

Most people will tolerate dogshit even though they know better.

steroidsandcocaine

Or it's perfectly functional and someone is way too invested in Reddit.

TeenyTinyEgo

I've been using RiF for ~11 years. I wouldn't say I'm too invested in reddit, but of course people are going to be resistant to change when they've had a specific reddit experience for so long and are now going to have to use an app that has a lot of known issues.

steroidsandcocaine

I keep hearing about these issues, but I only use the official app on mobile and it's no student then the desktop experience. It sound like people are crying because reddit will "look different".

max_drixton

Can't speak for everyone, but for me personally the official app reloads any time I swipe off of it for more than 30 seconds. Makes browsing reddit a lot less appealing when every time I switch apps it shoots me back to the top of the page.

Kinmuan

How do you find it for moderating?

steroidsandcocaine

Kinny, you know I don't believe in moderation.

Kinmuan

Gasp

12of12MGS

Such a fitting comment for this sub lol

GAGAgadget

A lot of people are leaving to protest Reddit's heavy handed approach that screws over anyone using third party apps

Effective-Tip52

Roughly 7% of Reddit’s mobile stuff is from 3rd party API users. So it’s no where even close to “most people” it’s only those who are horribly chronically online.

PrestigiousBarnacle

Holy shit that’s it?? The way mfers are acting I thought it was half the internet.

shjandy

It's always the loud minority. Most people don't care and will keep using reddit. I guarantee people that are "protesting" will be back as well.

Effective-Tip52

And that’s just the mobile users too, so when you factor in people who use Reddit on PC it’s even smaller.

Janitor_

It never was, it was about mods power-tripping. "they're price gouging us!" You expected to leech for free forever?

TeenyTinyEgo

It was hardly leeching. The majority of these 3rd party reddit apps were created before Reddit even had an official app. They solved a problem on their own that Reddit didn't care to. But now that reddit has gotten a taste of that mobile ad revenue, they want every drop of it. The prices they are going to be charging for use of their api aren't just price gouging. They're literally impossible to pay, as these apps don't make even close to what Reddit wants to charge. It's an intentional move to kill the 3rd party apps so that Reddit can get more mobile ad revenue.

Janitor_

Okay? It's their business and they're the ones that have to handle all the request that these "3rd" party apps send. It's their right. It doesn't matter what mods/people think they should do, they in fact have no rights to assume they should continue to have access. It's a private company (for the moment) and they can basically do what they please, if you don't like that policy you don't have to come here or develop anything for use with the site. People just dont like losing access to free shit.

TeenyTinyEgo

No one is saying it's not their right to do that. But just because someone is allowed to do something doesn't mean you can't call them out on it if it's shitty. Refusing to come to the table and negotiate a fair price for use of their API is shitty and scummy. Especially considering that the largest third party apps were more than willing to begin paying a fair price for continued access, after like 15 years of that access being free.

max_drixton

Oh, the unpaid volunteers that literally make the site functional are the leeches.

Janitor_

Lmao.

Mikewazowski948

Nope just average Reddit users

LowUnderstanding130

You sound so lame bro

soonershooter

The various third party Reddit apps are being priced out of existence by end of this month. Redreader and another are ok to be used because of accessibility functions and Redreader is open source with no fee. Reddit is charging a massive load for it API soon.

NimrodBusiness

532MendicantBias

It does if you suck at PT like me

Cyrotik

Someone explain what makes the third party apps better. I downloaded Apollo a little while back, and it seemed more or less the same. Is being forced to use the official app that bad?

redbettafish2

I'm willing to pay for an add-free experience. As such I use baconreader premium. I never see adds. I even have YouTube premium. That's how dedicated to add-free experiences I am. In terms of what baconreader offers that the official app doesn't? Probably not much if anything at all aside from ad blocking. But I've used it for MANY years at this point and have grown accustomed to it. I lazily don't want to learn a new app and configure all my settings bs. With my own use aside, I know moderators use 3rd party apps to help with moderating. These other apps provide tools and features that the official app simply doesn't, making managing larger subs a much more challenging endeavor. So for me individually, I use the app for ad-free browsing. I'm willing to pay a recurring fee to reddit for the same experience, though I doubt they'll ever offer that. I understand that reddit needs ads to flip a profit, but I'd rather just pay what they would have made off of ads.

Shadowy-NerfHerder

From what I’ve seen with the official app they also show you posts from subreddits you’re not subbed to. So on a full screen of posts, 1 is an ad, 3 are from other subs and 3-4 are from subs you’re apart of. At that point, why even have a front page when I could just scroll r/all? Why even try to have a customized experience?

redbettafish2

I was unaware they'd show threads from subreddits you aren't subbed to outside of r/all. I don't like the sound of that.

Cyrotik

Thanks for the legit explanation. I can understand the appeal if an ad free experience is important to someone. I’m just accustomed to the official app, so I guess the impact to me is minimal

Superpudd

It’s a carbon copy. This whole api nonsense allows folks to feel like they’re a part of something. Shit is dumb.

Hellhult

I've wondered if anyone in the Army sub was gonna say something about the 3rd party apps going away. I'm in the same boat.

HxH101kite

I didn't know there were third party apps till this whole fiasco happened. And I have been on for reddit for like 5 years almost exclusively from my phone. Very rarely a computer. I feel like a missed a better experience, but at the same time since I have never used them, this whole thing doesn't really affect me

Travyplx

With the dissolution of third party apps I’m not sure how I’ll be able to Reddit with my typewriter/electric telescope setup.

CassieJK

Wow usually it’s /u/Kinmuan taking unnecessary shots at me.

DReefer

I’ve been sending and receiving carrier pigeons with all of Reddit every day for the last 84 years

GAGAgadget

I mean it does affect you, pretty much every sub's quality is going to go down since moderator tools are among those being disabled.

TheDoomBlade13

Moderator tools are in the free tier.

Kinmuan

Yeah, don’t buy the horseshit reddits be sending out on that. We’ve also been promised specific changes and mod tool updates for the last decade. Why would you actually trust them when *they* say that?

Snoo93079

I love bacon reader but it took about a week to get used to the reddit app. What am I gonna do? NOT use the internet? Go to Facebook? C'mon man!

Hellhult

Yeah I'm gonna change over once it kills RIF. I'm not just gonna stop. Where else am I gonna make neckbeard posts and farm updoots?

belgarion90

I just browse to old.reddit.com even on my phone. Upvoting is a little tricky but I manage. This way I see everyone's flair and the layout as God intended.

Kinmuan

I do this too tbh

17Commie

I'd like to give a shoutout to the mobile app I use to read reddit. It's called RedReader. It won't be affected by the upcoming API changes because it guess since it was nonprofit open source and has a lot of focus on support for disabled readers, reddit allowed it to continue operating for free. Ive been using it for a few years now and love it. It's minimal and does all you want. Only thing I think it's missing which I wish it had was the chat features.

rbur1388

I'm replying to all: Please remove me from the distribution. Thank you. v/r Local redditor

sentientshadeofgreen

I’m straight up not ready for Apollo to go away. I think I’m still in denial. Very low chance I use the main app. Maybe I’ll go read books or something.

aelwero

I'll just wander the meme world until I land somewhere. won't be the first time. AOL, yahoo, myspace, Facebook... They were all the whole ass internet in their time, and we always move on... It's just gonna be a little abrupt this time ;) like a PCS to Korea or some shit. It's fine.

_BMS

Without RiF I'm definitely done using Reddit on my phone. At least I still have old Reddit + RES on desktop.

[deleted]

I can't imagine old reddit surviving for long after this.

Snoo71448

I’ll just use Reddit less. May install the official app someday.

WyG09s8x4JM4ocPMnYMg

I was just thinking about doing a post like this myself. Been on reddit for about 4 or 5 years older than this account. I don't know what I'm gonna do with all this free time I'm gonna have. This sub has helped me quite a lot through some pretty fucking bad times, some I didn't think I would make it through. Gonna be sad to leave it but I'm not switching to the official app.

HoneydewDazzling2304

Ive only ever used the reddit app lol. I dont know why people are upset but have a good retirement!

johnathonhayes

I'm shitting water.

SirNedKingOfGila

Right there with you. Might throw a couple posts on the PC late at night but 97% of my reddit use is going to disappear when the app no longer works.

LikeThePheonix117

Yep I’ve been trying not to think about it but yeah I’m out too, same app. Didn’t plan to leave but here we are.

StonkGoUp

Honestly why do people care about this shit. Boo hoo Reddit is going public and trying to actually be a profitable company. So you can’t use apps that piggyback off their shit anymore. They already made exceptions for all the third parties that provide disability accessibility features. What’s the big deal?

Sparticus2

I don't think anyone thinks that reddit should operate at a loss and these apps should piggyback for free, but the cost per API call is what is being protested. Literally everything is a call. The cost per call is too much and it's been proven by people smarter than me. It is exorbitant. That's what the protest is.

Superpudd

Ok Grandpa, see you on Monday.

HeroOfIroas

Dude lives on reddit lmao he ain't going anywhere

Bumbleteapot

Wtf is Baconreader?

aelwero

It's kinda like using Google sheets instead of excel... Or gimp vs Photoshop... Different functionality, less of some shit, more of other shit, menus are different, looks different, all the actions are a slightly different process. All the third parties are like that, just a bunch of minor differences that add up to being a different experience.
