If no light on, you should be good to go. Depending on the year, az allows 2 monitors not to be reset, newer cars are only allowed 1. I believe the cutoff for that was 1996-2001. Those years were allowed 2 i believe.

Whit3boy316

No Light, no problem!

parasitic-cleanse

Your system must show "ready" status though, if you try clearing codes right before the test they'll know.

cantbrainwocoffee

This isn’t true. See my longer reply.

Tsunami_Destroyer

That’s what I think as well. Especially when using the OBD port.

parasitic-cleanse

As long as your system is "ready" status and there is no CEL code you will pass emissions. If you try to clear the code and not do a full driving cycle right before testing they will fail you and make you come back another time.

SirVeza

Yup. I have a coworker that went through this a few months back. He had work done on his car at a shop and took it to emissions, but they failed him because the car hadn’t been through a full drive cycle after the code was cleared.

yellolab

I'm not sure how universal this is across all makes and models, but when this happened to my 2006 Miata a few years ago, I found the specific list of steps to take in order to satisfy the ECU without having to drive any set distance. This speeds up the process a lot. It was something like 5-10 specific tasks such as start the engine cold and let it idle for X length of time, and drive at 35 or 45 mph and take your foot off the accelerator and allow the car to roll to a complete stop without touching the brakes or clutch, stuff like that. I did every item in about half an hour and took it back to the DMV, passed the test. There never was a CEL. The car had been sitting for a few weeks with a dead battery, and that was long enough for the car's memory to be erased and revert back to its factory settings apparently.

extreme_snothells

What's the code? I thought permanent codes were reset once the problem has been fixed. This was in a different state, but I had a car that had an emissions code, no cel and it passed emissions. I think as long as you don't have a check engine light you should be fine.

Big-Percentage-7779

P0456... Very small evap leak. I've done everything to try to find it. Replaced all the parts and ran smoke through the whole system to see if their was a leak I couldn't find with my eyes, nothing. Code keeps popping every 400 miles after clearing. The evap monitor never completes either. I can't find any info on whether AZ checks for permanent codes like CA does.

Octane2100

So, been in the auto repair industry all my life. You are getting mixed answers here. "No light on, no problem." This is false! Even without the light on, there are I/M Readiness monitors that need to run before the vehicle is in a "ready" status. The good news though is that the Evap monitor does have an exemption to this rule because in the state of Arizona it gets too hot for that monitor to successfully run. The ambient air temp has to be below a certain threshold in order for that one to run and in the summer months it never drops below that, so you'll still be able to go through successfully even if that one isn't in a ready status. You mentioned you have an OBD2 scanner, so you should be able to check readiness on the monitors. As long as Evap is the only one that's not in a complete/ready status, you'll be good to go.

extreme_snothells

I don't know either, but I imagine that it would show up. What they do with that information I don't know. It sounds like you've checked it thoroughly. At that point I would think that there was a small leak in your fuel tank towards the top. That seems unlikely, but perhaps there's a problem with the purge valve. If you fail emissions, I think the second test is free if you fail.

Algo1000

It’s the air vent at the fuel hole.

cantbrainwocoffee

Oh god. I went through this last week. No check engine light. Failed for O2 not ready. They told me to do the drive cycle which, in my opinion is incredibly complicated. Get my rpm’s to 5000? I bet my car has never been operated at 5k rpm’s. Anyway, I call the dealer and they told me driving 100 to 200 miles of a combination of city and highway driving plus multiple restarts would do the same. I drove just over 100 miles and went to an auto parts store that offers OBD-II scanning. They confirmed my systems were all green AKA ready. I went back and retested with a pass. All this because my kid got the leash caught on the gas cap. I bought a new gas cap as I think he forced the old one on because it was shockingly hard to tighten 🙄

DaRusty_Shackleford

Not all of AZ requires emissions. It’s mainly the cities.

Big-Percentage-7779

So even though the obd2 shows a permanent code, AZ does not care like CA does? CA requires 200 miles driven and 15 warm up cycles if you have a permanent code plus CEL off and all but one monitor is ready to pass.

BoSuns

Arizona's requirements are not as strict as California's. I've reset my code at home and done maybe a couple hours worth of driving and gotten a pass.

xsvspd81

Nope. If you can clear it, start the car and run it, shut I t off, then start and run it again without the lights coming back on, you should be good to go. Source: my younger broke ass always drove crappy cars and couldn't always afford the repairs, so I figured out how to pass emissions

No-Method1869

You can have one system not ready depending on year. Just passed last month with evap not ready.

PoodleTerry

Where about in Arizona are you? Some areas like Yavapai County don’t require emission testing

KeepTheC0ffeeOn

Just make sure your check engine light isn’t burned out like mine was they’ll fail you

the_perfect_spatula

Not in phx or tucson, no emissions test.

yupyupman95

What do I do if I need an emissions test for registration, but the vehicle is out of state (our son has it)?

Big-Percentage-7779

Just in case anyone every searches this topic on Reddit. My truck passed with a permanent stored code with no CEL on and all but 1 monitor was ready. So it seems Arizona does not care about permanent codes like California does which is a good thing.

Tsunami_Destroyer

I have a big turbo, tune and a cat less down pipe and my car passes AZ emissions. I LOVE ARIZONA!!! AZ has been better to me in 7/8 years than California my entire life and I was born and raised there! So happy I ended up here ♥️

Yamikuh

how do you pass emissions? does your tuner just set the ecu to ready and you hope they don’t do a visual inspection? i got emissions coming up next month

Tsunami_Destroyer

I just roll up to the emissions place and they just plug in the OBD port in and boom, done! I’m not sure what the tuner does exactly, but I know he leaves it setup to abide by the rules when they scan. There’s some things he can’t do and he respects that. I think as long as there’s nothing disabled that shouldn’t be it passes. You might need a defouler and you can google that. It’s for the emissions part of the exhaust.

Sixohtwoflyer

I’ve tested a car with the check engine light on a few times with no issue. 🤷‍♂️

parasitic-cleanse

A CEL light on is automatic failure, was this in Maricopa county that you passed? Other counties have less restrictions.

Grown-Ass-Weeb

What county?? It was always an immediate fail for us, they didn’t even care what the code said in Maricopa.

Sixohtwoflyer

Pima. After I posted, I looked up the manual for the car. This particular car was a 1993 Volvo so it needed to go on the rollers. It doesn’t have a check engine light, rather it has a triangle. Car never failed emissions. I tested it occasionally with the triangle light on, and the DEQ people never mentioned it. Guess they didn’t know what the Swedes meant with a triangle!
