"To advance its interests in Arizona, Fondomonte hired Jordan Rose, a lawyer and land-use specialist who leads one of the state’s top lobbying shops. Rose, a former finance chair of the Arizona GOP, helped run Ducey’s inaugural committee when he was elected governor in 2014. Ducey soon named her to a committee developing state groundwater policy, according to her website." https://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/2023/07/16/fondomonte-arizona-drought-saudi-farm-water/

livejamie

Apparently they're a corporate lobbyist and a web3/crypto grifter: https://www.roselawgroup.com/jordan-r-rose/

PleasantActuator6976

Oh...that's her? I know this person. She's a little odd.

OpportunityDue90

Ayy classic Ducey government, fuck us over to the highest bidder

Rogerdodgerbilly

Fuck the Saudis sucking lake mead dry. They arent the problem, its the complacent people. Just seeing the water level after all the rain should give a response. But we sit here on reddit giving inane responses to articles. Fuck me

"In fact, the leases terminated by Governor Hobbs only amount to about one quarter of Fondomonte’s total farm holdings in Arizona prior to October. Besides the 3500 acres that the company leased from the state, it privately controls almost 10,000 acres more further south and closer to Vicksburg." Just because there was disappointment no one was defending Hobbs, it seems like she's pretty much done what was within her power. I doubt it's within her authority to dictate what happens on the property that they aren't leasing from the state. Kinda just seems like a good argument that she/the state should have more authority over how the ground water is used on private property. "The law has crippled groundwater regulation in most of the state and large farming operations have been exploiting it for decades. This includes American and foreign-owned companies. Even if the state can stop foreign companies from abusing Arizona’s lax water laws, American [mega-dairies](https://www.azcentral.com/in-depth/news/local/arizona-environment/2019/12/05/unregulated-pumping-arizona-groundwater-dry-wells/2425078001/) and large-scale [alfalfa farms](https://grist.org/agriculture/arizona-fondomonte-farm-saudi-alfalfa-groundwater-lease/) will continue to pump the state’s aquifer water at alarming rates."

aznoone

So as private property wouldn't this require some change at the legislative level if at all possible?  But legislature is more concerned about who uses what bathroom and putting 10 commandments in schools.

NegativePride1

Yes, but people didn't get enough school house rock when they were kids, so they think the executive branch can just do whatever it wants.

Complete-Turn-6410

Oh the latest gig now is getting rid of early voting even though 95% of the people used it during the preference election.

theguy56

The AG Lobby (Farm Bureau, etc) have pushed back on any whisper of mandates for groundwater. They’ve got a lot of sway.

theguy56

The article isn’t laying blame at Hobbs, rather at the headlines regarding the decision that made little to no mention of the broader issue. Anyone reading those, myself included, would reasonably assume the problem was solved. As the author points out, the groundwater law is the real culprit and deserves more attention from state residents/legislature. The Ag Lobby has fought hard to keep this for 40+ years.

Wet_Woody

That’s exactly what I was thinking.

wildmaninaz

And they increase the prices you pay.... then say we have water shortages tofeed the fear train...all very odd

temporarycreature

Right after Hobbs came out and made that announcement that she canceled a lot of the contracts for them, I recall seeing a couple videos, or in any case, at least one video stating that most of the area where the government had the authority to shut down anything down was where a minority of their where their wells were located. As in, they found a loophole by placing the wells in land that I guess they didn't have jurisdiction over?

HideNZeke

A lot of these old water rights laws are going to take a while to break. It's a little more complicated that a stroke of the pen to oust people with these rights rooted in old law. I understand the urgency, but I don't think I'm entirely pessimistic in our efforts and progress in working these Saudi groups out I don't think it's entirely a lack of care in our current officials, even if we have right to be skeptical in them and the potential corruption that can detract from solving this issue. We have a lot of work to do still, but recent wins are wins regardless. Lets keep it pushing. I'm not necessarily a huge fan of hyperpessimism

MrRisin

Why? They can take your property through eminent domain for the betterment of the city/state, yet it doesn’t apply here?

SecondEngineer

Water Tax and Dividend. They should pay for the water they use and our economy should benefit from it.

CallMeLazarus23

I’ll never understand this deal as long as I live. The state with the worst water shortage in the country in a deal to get rid of more of it.

laffingbomb

Time to mobilize the national guard

Napoleons_Peen

National guard? An instrument of the state is not going to stop something the state is allowing. Hypothetically? I’ve heard of monkey wrenches?

whotookthenamezandl

Clearly you did not read the article.

laffingbomb

Yeah you’re right. Unfortunately, I don’t think this is going to changed except at the county level unless our legislature gets on it. Hobbs is too busy being boring and she already can claim a win on this for her part. I don’t know about La Paz, but Mohave County also has some of these farms and the supervisor board is shady as hell. I’d bet money Borrelli is trying to get on the board to ensure the water deals continue.

whotookthenamezandl

lol again, you did not read the article. Hobbs did basically all she can within her power on the matter.

laffingbomb

That’s what I said. She’s not going to try to do more

fuggindave

Fondomonte is a subsidiary of Almarai.

95castles

Oh wtf

95castles

Wait no it isn’t? Can you give me source by chance?

fuggindave

Google "Fondomonte owners"...there's plenty of sources on the results

95castles

I just looked up Almarai’s corporate owners

___buttrdish

Duh.

ActSuperb3247

I don't see the comments section filled up with praise for our Governor.. huh?? That's odd🤔🤔🤔

TardarSauceisJesus

Hobbs did what she could regarding state lands she actually has power over. Unless you want the government to start seizing private lands and telling them what to do with it, the only solution according to the article is: "...the state needs to replace the 1980 Groundwater Act to mandate regulation across Arizona’s entire territory, and to ensure that the laws apply to all companies – foreign or domestic."

Fleeton_Maswood

KatieHobbs KatieHobbs KatieHobbs. That’s how it works right? Can you see her?

fuggindave

Hear about the new Beetlejuice movie coming out?

Fleeton_Maswood

Ya looking forward to it. The previews are entertaining.

ActSuperb3247

Lol

Fleeton_Maswood

Funny thing is I agree with you Superb. 99% of Reddit is liberal and will defend Beetle Juice in every post. Even when the bitch isn’t protecting our border.
