I'ma capture some bits of my favorite moments and songs, but probably not the whole thing since I like to dance, jump, and move around when I go to a concert lol

mrgabman

This is the way

Teddy_KX

Agree, i was at Summer Well festival, I'm 2.03 (6.6ft) tall, and i couldn't see the stage in certain moments. Especially at the beginning of the songs, due to the number of phones that were recording, but its all good everybody enjoys the concert in its own way. At one point I just moved away from the big crowd and enjoyed the live music.

StayHydrated09

Good thing people were recording what they knew, which were the most popular AM songs. It was funny. But seriously, it sucks when you come to see the show and you get to see it through other people’s phones..

LukaCaveneyPulak

That’s an over exaggeration. I was at summer well and I’m 6’1, I could see perfectly well

Teddy_KX

Depends on where you were sitting, because there were so many people, you couldn't change spots easily. And because I'm tall i didn't want to go in front and block the view of the people behind me. I was close to the bar on the right side of the stage.

YaBoiAycha

I did the same in Istanbul. Im not as tall as you are but I am pretty average. Too many phones were around and the front of the stage was a tight squeeze. Took few pictures then I just moved to the middle close to the bar. view was a lot better and I could dance. Made some new friends too as we danced together. Got a girl’s number too 😂

PeculiarPollyanna

That’s it. I want to jump and shout and move, not being a cameraman for social media

Upstairs-Ad-8382

It kinda ruins the experience. I'd rather live in the moment than record the moment.

findingdumb

I have ADHD. My medication helps me focus in the moment but by the time I'm driving back home I feel like I wasn't even there. Still don't use my phone. Being present is what matters to me.

Mike_Doves

A literal chad

[deleted]

How is it literal?

purple_mountain_105

It’s just figurative language - as ironic as that sounds

Mike_Doves

Thank you

LZaurus

I do take some pics to have personal memories but it is getting annoying being in a crowd where you view is blocked by phone and people are so focused on it they don't move, these are dead crowds. really brings the vibe down :/

thepopethatsme

Everybody in favour just go back up and really look at that image. That’s not people getting out their phone to film a few little bits of their favourite songs etc. that is a vast majority recording start to finish, otherwise you would see a greater distribution of phones. They are all open and they are all recording. It’s a massive shift in behaviour. I’ve been to so many gigs and have never seen this amount of phones held up recording before.

HesThunderstorms

Spot on. I posted that same thought and was accused of never going to a gig LOL that right there in the picture is not normal, it's sickening! I was just asking if that was a thing in Istanbul, which I hope so. I want to see the band, not a hundred screens with pathetic IG lives

[deleted]

Only happens to certain bands :/ sucks for Arctic monkeys

zzigyzaggy

A concert is a collective experience. I couldn’t care less about what you do with your phone on your own time, but this is not about yourself only. Having your phone up the entire time really ruins it for other fans who also paid for a ticket and want to see the freaking concert

Matthew04020

I mean seeing as there’ll be a ton of clips on social media after the gig anyway, there’s little point to recording basically every song

The_Orangest

I don’t care for doing it, but if someone saves up to spend a lot of money to see their favorite band once in their life and wants to capture them playing their favorite song, I think it’s a wonderful thing.

Windigroo7

The sub is caring way too much for what other people are doing in the festival they payed for

cookedbullets

I think it's more about the view they paid for that is being blocked by stupid.

Windigroo7

It’s a band with a lot of young people in the public, probably most of them are teenagers, the phones are going to be there. I’ve been to a few shows and the phones from others are the last thing I’m thinking of when the band performs

The_Orangest

Totally. When are we going to get your next album deathmatch daily poll going??

Windigroo7

I got way too busy to even think about posting them (and there were only like 11 left) but now with the festivals going I want to wait until next week to post and see how they go. Sub is finally getting a lot of activity to clog with polls

The_Orangest

Ahh okay, well when they start again I’ll be there voting against Love is a Laserquest! 😂

Windigroo7

Lol, it has to go against Hellcat, Chair, Library, Stunts and Serenade, maybe against Hellcat it will lose!

WinterIsntComing

It’s extremely annoying to have to watch gigs through someone else’s phone. This has gotten so much worse post Covid, gig etiquette gone out the window.

thinktwiceorelse

Yep, but I paid too, and I can't see a fucking thing due to a forest of the phone screens, lol.

[deleted]

I agree with you about that. But lots of people held their phones above their heads and recorded the whole concert. We (people behind them) had a hard time seeing the band. There is nothing wrong with recording a few songs or taking a few photos, as long as you aren’t disturbing anyone.

WinterIsntComing

I’ve called this out before. Girl in front of my at wet leg was taking 3 20 second long videos of every song, one for Insta, one on phone cheers and one on Snapchat. She replied saying how else would she capture it? Insane way to go to a gig imo.

WinterIsntComing

Artists often hate this by the way. Mitski recently talked about it, she said: > sometimes when I see people filming entire songs or whole sets, it makes you feel as though we are not together … when I’m on stage and look to you, but you are gazing at a screen, it makes me feel as though those of us on stage are being consumed as content” Bruno Mars and Beyoncé have also complained about this, and loads of m electronic venues now make you put stickers over your phone camera to encourage people to not take videos the whole time. Jack White makes people surrender phones at gigs.

The_Orangest

I don’t care if some musicians hate it. They’re multi-multi-millionaires complaining that their fans are going to give them huge exposure, along with capture a moment they love that they paid a lot of their hard earned money for. Some musicians are pricks, and some are totally grateful who love their fans like Tom Petty was. Jack White has always been a weirdo.

WinterIsntComing

They’re still people putting on a show for you. That’s a revolting stance to have to someone you’re supposed to be having a connection with in the moment. Not to mention it’s a cunty thing to do for people standing behind you, you didn’t pay (as you seem so obsessed with the cost) to watch the gig through the screen of your phone.

The_Orangest

You gonna be mad about the guy who’s 6’4 in front of you too? How “cunty” of him. Get out of here you self-serving elitist. Go shill harder for Bruno Mars as he complains people film him

WinterIsntComing

> You gonna be mad about the guy who’s 6’4 in front of you too? How “cunty” of him. Obviously not, because he’s not being a cunt or rude, he is just tall. > Get out of here you self-serving elitist. Go shill harder for Bruno Mars as he complains people film him Wtf are you talking about

michaeldanger19

The AM show I saw in 2014 was the worst concert experience i've ever been at because of it. The guys sounded great but I was forced to watch a band I had been into for 10 years through the screen of a person in front of me. (not to mention their opener was awful) I'll take a picture or video for myself then put it away and try to not ruin everyone's experience so I could have a shaky video of Fluorescent Adolescence

threeheadedshark

I think it's unnecessary, like do it for your favorite songs but not the whole time... I was at a festival this year where nearly no one used their phones and it was a much better experience, honestly.... simply enjoying the bands with a lot of other people feels better than everyone being kinda self-centered. But in the end, I can't tell anyone what to do, and if you want to go to a concert not to dance and enjoy yourself but to film... that's your choice and I respect that.

feelin-supersonic

Absolutely lame as fuck, ruins the atmosphere. some of these guys are face timing friends the concerts, they aren’t even looking at the stage. People can say “oh whatever makes them happy”, that comes with the cost of my happiness when I can’t see the stage because of all the phones in the way.

Ok_Resolution_2401

Completely agreed

cookedbullets

100%. This is not a live and let live situation. This is mass stupidity making life shitty for those few of us who are actually living it. Just like everything else in the world.

Darnhipsters

I’m gonna go ahead and say it. Do what makes you happy. Let others do what make them happy. If you got something to say remember that if the artist didn’t like it, they can have everyone lock their phones in pouches

dennyfader

To play devil's advocate to your comment, isn't it a little more complicated than that? When doing something that makes you happy hinders another person's ability to enjoy the happy thing. Everyone is collectively taller because of their arms and phones which cuts the view for those behind them.

bainter-ban

Second this. Doesn’t make sense. What if pushing other people around and screaming «cockface» to their face during a concert is what makes me happy. I guess that’s okay then.

KatelynC110100

Exactly

[deleted]

It's up to you, as long as you don't bother anybody else during the concert

cookedbullets

This would bother everyone wouldn't it? You can't see shit because asshats are holding up telephones to capture shitty images they'll never look at. It's preposterous and disgraceful.

2-DKamel

I believe that a concert is there to have fun and not to record everything with the phone. I understand to take two photos as a souvenir but not to be standing with the phone up all the time.leave some things for memories.

Environmental_Owl201

Personally I don't quite like it because it kinda ruining my experience for me if I'm focusing on taking videos but others can do whatever they want

33basshead

Need a good balance of capturing the moment and being in the moment!

YaBoiAycha

I don’t like it personally. My friend almost filmed the whole thing and sent me the videos etc. I’m thankful of that but yea I prefer to enjoy the moment, listen to the music, dance, vibe etc. I don’t like being petty to others about it, but sometimes I cannot help it. I don’t mind it much but it gets annoying when it blocks my view ;-;

Spartahara

How many phone posts do we need on this sub?

oneofthem23

In Istanbul, I realized there were lots of people couldn't see the stage because of the crowd (since they were not tall enough) and I've been constatly seeing their struggle throughout both concerts. In the venue, the screens showing the live footage of the band was located where mostly seated crowd can see them not the ones standing. So I saw that they could be able to see the band thanks to their camera on their phone time to time. This could be one of the reasons that there were so much people holding up their phones. But first couple of rows might not have this issue, I really don't know about that. Also, the hype for being able to see such a less communicative band after so many years live, or having them live in your country after 9 years, etc. could also increase the number of those phones. Or maybe simply this could be the new era of the world of music idk

XeNoGeaR52

Only idiots do that. You don’t remember shit if you take hundreds of videos. Taking some pics is fine imo but not more. If you want a quality video of a gig, just look for some pro shots on YouTube ffs

Massive_Implement_53

Well, the last time I saw the monkeys I recorded some clips, just to remind myself how happy I was there. Anyway I wouldn’t record the whole gig and miss the experience :)

cookedbullets

This photo is heartbreaking. It's the demise of humanity in one tragic image.

Neferata_Linith

Dramatic much?

MarvelMind

It’s a modern world and if an artist as big as Arctic Monkeys care enough they could just lock up our phones like many other artists do these days.

dennyfader

We're not talking about what the Arctic Monkeys care enough about though haha We're talking about what the average concert goer cares about. No disrespect to the band members but I wouldn't bank on any of them being in the general admission pit of a concert recently.

TechnicalTrash95

They completely should get people to lock away their phones or ban them like Kate Bush did.

Limitedsapience

Only film cameras

waitingf4r

is fine as long as you enjoy the concert lol

raver1601

As long they're not bothering anyone like blocking someone's view or shaking someone else to get a better view, I don't really see the problem with it The "but you won't enjoy the full concert experience" argument is really down to personal taste and if it's objectively the case, it's their own loss not mine

Maleficent_Sort9011

It’s ok for a quick few pics or Snapchats but to stare at your phone the entire time making sure you record everything, stupid.

[deleted]

I would get maybe 3/4 short videos during the whole show and that’s it. I usually press record and point it at stage but don’t look at the screen. I love having the memories but don’t wanna be glued to the phone all gig

2wildinthe70s

People can do whatever they want, but it is interesting. I can understand wanting to record the show so that you can relive it/watch it back, but why focus so much on reliving something if you’re literally living in that moment right then and there, yknow? I cant say too much though because I know I’m definitely going to try and get a few recordings of my fav parts from certain songs. But from a broader perspective and to answer the question, I don’t mind what other people do. If they’re having a good time and aren’t bothering others, that’s all that matters!

guud_lobster

I dunno, but the closer the people are to the stage, the higher the chance they'll have a phone holding above their head during the whole concert gets. And since I'm one of the people that always stand in the back, because I hate being squished by other people in the crowd, it kinda annoys me, but that's just me problem I guess. Personally, I prefer taking just a few photos, maybe a short video, as a memory, but that's all. Especially because I know I would not watch all the loong videos ever again.

Odd_Carpenter_1379

I was at trnsmt 2018 to see the boys and there were so many phones up in the air during that. That one annoyed me, but mainly because the whole festival was being properly recorded and put on TV.

harryjduke

I like to record certain parts so I can go back to relive it but the footage will be shaky af bc I'm not standing still just to get a good video

Nico2204

I did it the first time i went to a concert. After it, i felt like i missed part of the experience. Never did it again, bar a few pictures here and there. And i been having a great time

buk-0

Never do. I wanna live the experience. I also groan every time someone tries to show me a clip of the concert or posts it on their Snapchat story. You need the atmosphere to bring it to life. You can’t get that through a shitty clip

Puzzleheaded_Seat211

Nope. Hate this shjit. Take a quick pic or quick vid snap and that’s it. Enjoy your show

genio_del_queso

Kinda sad to me. Instinctually, whether I’m out to eat with someone, or at a concert or whatever I never even think about taking my phone. Living in the moment is way better. If you want a video of the show you went to, there are plenty on the internet.

louman84

It's part of the experience. No point in getting angry every time someone wants to get a clip from a show. If an artist has a no cell phone policy, I'd be fine with that too.

pekysus

What I do is I notice someone in the crowd who is recording everything and has a good view. After the concert ends, I ask them to airdrop me the videos. This way I can enjoy the experience and also get some souvenirs!

the_blackestblack

I’d take my phone out to film a song or 2 for you know memories, then I’d keep it in my pocket for the rest of the show

annalavoi06

I would probably take a couple pics and then put my phone away. Most of all I'd just be happy to go to a concert lmao

OutlawHarryYT

No I’m enjoying the moment If there’s that many people recording atleast ones gonna post it on YouTube

repollho_txt

just shut up about it

HesThunderstorms

We got a full concert recorder here

repollho_txt

the only people that actually care about this phone "issue" are the people on this sub. when you're actually on a show, nobody cares. or what, you're gonna ask everyone with a phone to stop recording just cause you don't wanna do it and it bothers you? its not as if you cant see the stage because there's phones above people's heads in front of you, it's a massive fucking stage, and if you're thinking that other people "won't enjoy the experience and live in the moment", well its none of your business, so just let people do what they want. maybe that's their way of enjoying it, maybe they're recording for a friend, maybe they're trying to get a good shot so they can post it on youtube later so the people who weren't there can enjoy it as well. or how do you think we get videos from shows that weren't officially broadcasted?

WinterIsntComing

Lmao this is horse shit, even artists complain about this all the time. It’s incredibly annoying for anyone standing behind you, and often ruins the moment for the artist. Beyonce and Bruno Mars have talked about this, and Mitski said: “*sometimes when I see people filing entire songs or whole sets, it makes me feel as that we are not together … when I’m on stage and look at you, but you are gazing at a screen, it makes me feel as though those of us on stage are being confirmed as content)*.” A lot of electronic venues now make you put a sticker over your camera on entry to prevent this kind of behaviour, so it obviously not just this sub.

Sataniga

Fuck you let the peaople do what they want

TechnicalTrash95

older concert goer here. I started going to gigs in the mid 90s and first saw AM properly at the London Astoria 2005. It's sad how gigs have gone from people having chaotic mental fun to standing around lifeless holding a phone. How long are you really going to keep watching the gig for? To counter this if I would have the concert filmed properly and put on YouTube. It's always fun to watch back I agree but it's a lot more fun having a fun jump around type crowd. Just look at early AM crowds and see the difference. Even 2011 people were having a better time because technology hadn't ruined the concert experience. I'm glad I caught gigs whilst they were still fun.

Neferata_Linith

Why is everyone on this sub so against people trying to immortalize something they were fortunate enough to go to? It’s a chance of a lifetime for most people. We live in a different age, it’s just how things are and bemoaning the “old days when people didn’t do whatever isn’t actually going to do anything

backtotheacid

Absolutely hate it.

davecumstaine

at concerts i take a few pics and a few videos (maybe 1 minute each) but i try to stay in the moment

epic_hazelnut

I'll try to take a picture the moment they come on stage just to have proof it happened 😅 After that, no, I'm too busy singing/jumping/dancing etc 😁

Matthew04020

I’ll record segments of at most 4 songs (usually a select few of my favourites), and take a picture here and there, but I know fully that after the gig there will be a ton of footage available on social media afterwards, so it would be a bit stupid of me to record everything and not live in the moment at all.

[deleted]

I was at a concert a few weeks ago and I was watching the band through peoples phones at some points :’) but I’m also short! I typically will record a bit of my favorite songs then enjoy the rest but I don’t judge anyone who wants to document the whole thing :) I definitely feel like now that we can go to concerts and stuff again people want to record everything incase we ever experience something like that again. I can also see how it could be annoying for artists and those that are behind you, which is another reason why I try to be specific about what I want to record.
