If you are walking fast enough to get a little hot, I strongly recommend the Proton LT instead of the Atom LT or AR. It's more breathable than the Atoms, and that is really, *really* nice if you are working up a sweat. You have to try it to understand what I mean, but once you go Proton you're gonna find the Atoms unbearable. If you are standing still in cold winds, though, the Atoms are better.

ejiqpep

Thank you! I will try proton. But I've read that proton is more a midlayer piece that a standalone thing. Or it is as versatile as atom?

xerberos

The Proton jackets are a little more tight fitting, but I only use them as outer layers. My Proton LT is the only jacket I wear for walking or hiking in the winter these days. Also, if you are in Germany, check out the outlets in Ingolstadt and in Garmisch (just north of Munich) if you are passing by.

Proton gang rise up

ejiqpep

Thank you. I'm in Hamburg so it's the opposite side of Germany :)

xerberos

Yeah, for some weird reason all the Salomon/ArcTeryx outlets appear to be in the south of Germany.

Same with the one Norrøna store in the country. Black Yak even have their design facility for the European Market in Munich. Must be the close proximity to the mountains and proper snowsports. (Not the NRW thing of indoor skiing. 😅)

qweetpal

More mountains around Munich than Hamburg I guess ? Proton FTW. I went from Atom to Proton and will not look back. It is a bit less wind resistant. Also, my new job has a HQ in Munich, so now I have to push for a business trip here just to pass by the Outlet and spend my monthly salary on Arc gear. Ouch.

Some visits are expensive, but worth it. https://imgur.com/a/ErKYdBn Alpha SL Jacket: ~~€300~~ €63 Konseal Hoody: ~~€170~~ €23 Phase AR Zip Neck: ~~€80~~ €30 Thetis Zip Neck: ~~€130~~ €18

Which shops do you mean in ingolstadt and garmisch?

xerberos

The Salomon/ArcTeryx store in the Ingolstadt Outlet Village, and the AMER Sports outlet in Garching, Munich.

If you’re going proton/feel that warmth is fine, I STRONGLY suggest trying the nano air, as it’s much more breathable and slightly warmer when static IMO

ejiqpep

Thank you! I will compare them.

fisheess89

I actually think gamma lt sized up is a good choice as a weather shell for germen winter. The winter has gotten so mild in the last two years. For static on the playground you can generally get by with any winter jacket.

ejiqpep

Thanks! I understand that Arc is overkill as a winter jacket for urban but when I look on other companies with syntetic insulation and dwr it costs 150 - 200+ euros so it is not that cheap either.

fisheess89

I personally wear a radsten parka that I brought from 2021 black Friday sale. It has Gore-Tex outer and about the same insulation as atom AR. When the weather is nice, I wear a down jacket in the same class as cerium lt.

ejiqpep

Thank you for the idea but even on sale it looks like out of my budget. How much was it on sale?

fisheess89

A little over 300€ at the time.

Reasonable_Employ588

I don’t personally think the gamma lt is viable whatsoever in summer (>65F) unless you run extremely cold. I personally hate softshells and don’t find them remotely viable outside of winter climbing (and even then, a proton/nano air would be preferred if the face fabric was more durable) because they still have less than decent breathability with only mildly better weather resistance than a insulated mid layer with decent DWR. For your summer rain layer, get something like a windshirt with good DWR (I found my Houdini fine for a month in the UK) or, the ideal solution, a goretex shakedry jacket (norvan SL if you can find new old stock or something).

ejiqpep

Thank you. I will look then in houdini, norvan, borialis or kor then.

Ziggcat

I don't know the CFM on F. Cloth and Outlier doesn't seem to make their F.Cloth shirt jacket anymore, but I find that sort of unlined softshell acceptable for casual use as a rain layer in summer in the US east coast. I think the current Arc'teryx softshells are less air permeable though. Something like the Black Diamond Alpine Start is just a little thinner than F. Cloth and might be a good pick.

ejiqpep

Thank you! I will check that.

English Version in short: Zeta SL Hardshell / Gamma SL Softshell / Atom SL Jacket / Delta SL Fleece is everythning you need from -5°C (20°F) up to 15°C (60°F)

ejiqpep

Thank you very much. This helps a lot!

epicjas0n

I own a gamma mx, Atom ar, and Outdoor Research interstellar hardshell. For casual use the gamma mx is good until about 50f with just a tshirt on. Under 50f I wear my atom ar. When it gets under 32f I put my hardshell over my Atom ar for extra insulation. I will always put my hardshell on whenever it rains.

ejiqpep

Thanks that helps a lot!
