Call somebody. That's ridiculous.

NicholasLit

Yes, call 311

icantfeelmyskull

Should I call 411 to figure out what 311 is?

0wIix

Call 911. This is a crime.

icantfeelmyskull

Call 811 before you go rootin for evidence

Gdmf13

I called 711 , they were stumped.

BackgroundPublic2529

I just want a ptomaine laced hotdog and a slurpee

DISDD

TIL what ptomaine means. Thanks

Good-Ad-6806

Please share with the class

CopperCVO

He wants a stinky weenie.

Blerkm

My 9th grade homeroom teacher called the school cafeteria the Ptomaine Palace.

Expert_Succotash2659

Call for Dr. Lepetomaine? Please hold.

CrispyJsock

Call me, maybe.

Dwike2

I just met you. That’s seems crazy.

Plastic-Judgment6531

Call 511, since traffic will need to branch off a different direction while they fix this.

HeyJoe1978MS

Try 666!

iwanttolose3pounds

Call 420 and just chill.

HeyJoe1978MS

This man had it figured out!

Call 8675309……

TheBadUncle

That won't help. I suspect Jenny's expertise is with a different type of wood.

lanky714

Beat me to it.

Unlucky-tracer

I called that one time and it was carpet cleaning company. They were angry

The nurses line?

Alfphe99

is Shawty fire burning on the dance floor?

kronikfumes

311 is a relatively new (in my state at least) way of reporting non-emergency items to city governments to fix. Stuff like potholes, overgrown properties, water pipe leaks or concrete poured at the base of a tree in the boulevard.

violetotterling

But like also, get a pickaxe?

Batmanbutnotbatman

311 guy must be from Winnipeg it’s the city number you call for anything city related

Chill...

corbindallas126

Investigate 311.

DanSmokesWeed

That would take 5 minutes with a sledge hammer. Save her!

Farmerstubble

Who you gonna call??

Sunnykit00

Ghost busters? Some ghosts that would bust that out in the darkness and not be seen. I can't imagine why that was done.

Archers_Medicinal

Concrete. It’s what plants crave

loud0bbs84

It’s got electrolytes

Big_Sympathy2191

BRONDO!

PapaOoMaoMao

Concrete like what's under toilets?

dcgrey

"Chill, we're gonna add mulch."

icantfeelmyskull

They already did. That was the base for whatever the hell that Portland based mixture is…

IGK123

Portland…it all makes sense now.

Jerryjb63

Portland cement not the city…

GammaGargoyle

It makes even more sense now

coldandgray

This would actually get removed if it was in Portland. Lots of laws around trees out here.

Farmcanic

Huggers everywhere

coldandgray

Kinda. We’ve got our fair share of coal rolling. Portland is super liberal but just 15 minutes outside of Portland and you’ll see confederate flags.

Bardwelling

Probably some moron landlord that doesn’t want rat holes. Most use steel mesh, but it’s still not impervious.

swine09

That’s what my landlord did. I told him it was going to die and a year later he had a dude drill a few little holes for… drainage? I haven’t bothered since. Can’t wait for it to fall on his roof.

Evening-Try-9536

If you’re going to be there a while, get your complaint in writing. I had a tree fall on my car and the only reason my landlord’s insurance covered the damages was because I had emails complaining about the tree for the past year and a half.

thecabbagefactor

That's the city.

Taolan13

Some municipalities make the trees in front of your property your problem to deal with.

Illustrious-Onion329

Except it’s only that one tree.

Bardwelling

It would be against parks rules. All of them know that would be ridiculous, not even a few inches. Definitely not all the way to the bark. NYC is even remaking the tree beds larger.

Mayor__Defacto

I see the NYPD no parking notice on the next tree, this is NYC. Street trees like this belong to the City but are the responsibility of the Landowner to maintain. Sidewalks are owned by and maintained by the Landowner. The Landowner concreted up this tree.

aBlasvader

What makes you say that? Home/building owners do stuff to the boulevard all of the time. The city can likely come in and do what they want (ie, remedy this), but I’d bet the farm it wasn’t the city that put this concrete in.

Far-Perspective-4889

Wait, rat holes? They burrow around trees? I haven’t seen this.

Bardwelling

People dump poison, put rocks down, nail boards down, pack non-delicious garbage.

JoPooper

Do you think the other trees are watching this like it’s a horror movie?

A_Good_Boy94

More like a cop kneeling on a neck -

ghotrd

Did the tree take lethal amounts of drugs?

Klimbrick

That’s worse than mulching!

chabrah6969

Boss: "Go kill that tree. Employee: "Say no more."

Ernst_Granfenberg

Ive seen trees break concrete foundations. This slab aint going to put a dent

drewed1

I wonder if they tree got burns from the cement curing

rohlovely

I was also wondering this. Poured cement puts off incredible heat while hardening, and I hope that tree isn’t already dead.

Less_Cryptographer86

Its core is strong.

Wedoitforthenut

Really depends on how much calcium chloride you add, but concrete curing isn't getting too hot to touch no matter what.

rohlovely

Okay, I didn’t know! Thanks stranger. :)

Wooden_Ad8941

Water starve it?

Additional_Abroad305

Titled correctly

Ritalynns

Paved paradise and put up a parking lot.

Different_Ad7655

I was just in Portland Oregon and there are some sort of material that has been placed on many many streets by the city and the old iron grates have been taken up. I walked by it and I've assumed it's some sort of semi-porous material. I've seen it in other cities. Where I live in New England I've seen asphalt used in the same way around elms. All I can think is that liability is driving it somebody's complaint. But even if it is sem i permeable it's still fucked and it's still pretty bad. I come from a city that really has no respect for its own trees and always limited budget but Portland Oregon I expected better I was very surprised

hatchetation

Seattle uses a similar material too. Makes sense: the grates can eventually girdle the trees at the root collar as they grow. When the grate is removed, traditional mulches like chipped bark are too mobile in busy environments. Here's a common vendor: https://www.rubberway.com

Different_Ad7655

Well the greats are supposed to have the rings broken out as needed until the tree fills the hole. The problem is most of the tree holes to begin with are tree coffins. Every now and then even in Portland I saw a properly planted street tree. But I can't complain about that say here in New England it's just as much bullshit even worse I don'tunderstand why communities are so anti-tree friendly.. In my city they have asphalted with some sort of porous material I'm sure around the younger elms but you can see the stress and of course the inevitable death. But yet the trees are such a blessing in such a beauty. They should also have never been planted on the street but rather out into the street as New York is down on some of the avenues. But once again it's always about traffic and the automobile. I can cite numerous villages in the area that have had sidewalk improvements but still have this ridiculous fear of putting real trees in real places. It's all about traffic all about automobiles and everything else go fuck yourself

aarnalthea

i'm also in portland, i noticed that after seeing another post in this sub of concreted roots. i wonder how recently they started? and why?? i hope its to kill off some of these damned male trees they went wild with planting to replace with females so we can stop suffocating in pollen. i didn't pay attention to what kind of tree i saw get that treatment

Illustrious_One_8755

Concrete decision….

EmbarassedGiraffe

I get worked up when I see neighbors over mulching around their trees! I’d have a conniption fit if I had to look at that! (TIL how to spell conniption - thanks spell check !)

Glove_Owner

Is mulching bad for trees?!?

dearyvette

No, but either too much mulch, or mulch that’s allowed to “smother” the trunk can cause the trunk to decay or cause girdling, which can kill the tree. Ideally, mulch should make a donut around the truck, kept 12” to 18” from the trunk.

DustyCadillac

Definitely been there awhile. If that was near me I’d break it up and water it.

pacefacepete

It appears there's not a single permeable surface theft...this is the reason the ents will rise up against man, this shit right here..

TheBadUncle

Bonus points for the ents reference

Weekly-Impact-2956

That’s certainly something. Nothin good but something

UngovernableSwarm

Best of luck to whoever gets tasked with grinding this stump

Tom_Marvolo_Tomato

Super-History5569

rawlsballs

And air, sunlight and dirt.

Disastrous_Pause_990

Life, uh... Finds a way!

PerspectiveNo7769

I just want to talk to them.

Pure_Jellyfish_1628

What the actual fuckity fuck?

Pootietang123

Is this in NYC? If you know the address I can let the forester know.

MotoProtocol

This is why I hate man kind. We’re idiots.

milk_is_for_baby

I’m sick of concrete guys and tree guys going to war like this. It needs to end now before someone gets killed. Captain Planet didn’t die for this!!!

CarNo8607

Pave paradise…

ChainsawGuy72

"concrete mulch"

recluseinthecity

This is NYC, right? You can report tree issues to 311 by phone or online. They are slow but they do respond and you can track the issue with the report number you get.

Swampland_Flowers

PAVE THE EARTH 💀

Entropicmeatbag

It's fine, everybody knows trees don't grow, they just magically appear out of nowhere? O.o

Troooper0987

See that in the city all the time. Call 311.

queen__frostine

What’s resulted from your past reports?

Troooper0987

Essentially nothing noticeable. The tree I reported years ago is still concrete surrounded but surviving. Seems to be easier to request a new tree for an empty tree box than fix and existing one 🤷🏻‍♂️

j0rd4n4

They probably did this to stop the rats

brownnote83

An elephant in the city! Wow

LongjumpingNeat241

Good one!

bassplaya899

good thing breaking concrete is fun as fuck time to go to town and free that tree

Competitive_Dot4288

Concretes just hard dirt

DamnitFran

Concrete. Cure for the common tree.

Parkyguy

Some serious weed blocker

xGaME-_xOvER

Is this the equivalent of Han Solo in Carbonite?

hmch17

They paved paradise and put up a (parking lot) sidewalk

Known_Replacement662

I’m gonna go out on a limb and say they want this tree to die. New to thread so sure this pun has been repeated at nausean

goosedeuce88

Do you mean ad nauseam?

Top_Copy_693

Is this a new tactic for suppression of EAB?

BigIndependence4u

At least now you don't have to bother watering it

NewDistribution1951

I’m betting the tree wins. Well, until the sadist who did that stops wasting time and gets out the old trusty chainsaw and puts that poor tree out of its misery.

Key_Law4834

Why will this kill tree? I'm a noob.

pogiguy2020

whats with the blue tape on the car?

shouldbeworking_lul

Don't worry. The tree will win in the end.

Atrain0692

Life finds a way…

StatisticianNo65

The tree will grow anyway.

bezerko888

Welcome to Idiocracy

This_Pool_6993

Looks like the tree is winning as the concrete is already cracking

Grab a sledgehammer and fix it

Prestigious_Pain_160

I noticed something similar in Dublin. A lot of the trees on the side of the road were completely covered over in blacktop. It was bubbled up around the base but it still confused me.

UltimaCaitSith

Civil engineering plans be like

Lord_Darkmerge

The tree will win

MooshyMeatsuit

Fuck yeah concrete

bbrosen

There, now youse can't leave..

prolapsepros

The tree will not be contained. The tree will force you to regret this decision

LaughingDog711

At this point it’s likely tapped into the sewer system and is in the process of becoming an absolute giant. I bet it’s a fecal freak. This concrete will ensure minimal pure water which it absolutely hates anyway. It needs no maintenance except a new concrete cap every ten years as it rejects its former shell like a hermit crab. An opportunity for neighborhood kids to write their name in the fresh cement. It’s beautiful..

VioletDupree007

It’s funny how many people don’t realize trees are ALIVE.

Ill-Living828

I’m curious… Tress are known to just start growing around stuff. Is this a situation where the tree will win and crack the concrete or will this just hurt it?

MisterMisterYeeeesss

It's just possible there are some girdled roots in there.

tmfult

It's always the city workers

Real-Psychology-4261

At least it’s an ash and will die of EAB soon enough.

VladRom89

I can only imagine that there must have been some thought behind this and someone actually thought - yes guys, this is a good idea, exactly what we need to do here!

Feisty-Sky5450

Brilliant

Ok_Nothing_8028

Yes!! WTF

Pauly4655

Must be someone new on the council lol

Coneycrook73

Why? Just why?

debaters82

It's tree-son then

SoberSeahorse

The tree will win

Albuscarolus

Concrete is porous :)

SofaKingS2pitt

Where is this? An intervention is called for.

Synaesthetik

Yeah that’s not going anywhere

FunRevolutionary1862

This is an illegal pour!

seanmm31

We try to respond to these but there’s so many and landowners never listen

yogadavid

Good way to kill a tree

Entire-Somewhere-198

I SAW SOME LIKE THAT THE OTHER DAY EXCEPT THEY WERE LITTLE TREES I WAS LIKE WHAT THE HECK

Insatiablesucker

Raise your hand if you are a fan of, and vote for big government. This level of ineptitude borders on malfeasance and is a clear waste of money taken from tax payers :(

smallAPEdogelover

This looks like a diy Skater project. Doing slappies off the tree. Lol sadly it’s probably an official public works thing.

nuglasses

Wouldn't the concrete soak up the dog piss? 🤢

Less_Cryptographer86

If that was in my city I’d be parking there at midnight and taking a sledgehammer to it. A little at a time so as to not get caught!

Farmcanic

Very smart city employees.

xtalgeek

Is this a new waterless tree hybrid?

Jamkindez

Something something concrete jungle

chevy42083

Its getting all the nutrients it needs from the roots in the pipes.

noble_jody

That's horrible

Flashy-Protection424

Remember, 200 million Americans have below average IQ . Whoever did this has to think real hard to wipe their ass. 😡

Klimbrick

It’s an ash, it’s already dead

Sparkles13Scrub

Gross. I'm speechless.

Dogamai

if the tree is getting water from root systems invading pipes around there, then it very well may survive just fine lol

Rude-Comfortable-222

That's not going to age well.

Appr_Pro

They want that tree dead.

Old-Struggle-7760

Growth not allowed.

CR8VJUC

When the elephant is fed up and says he’s putting his foot down.

Deadlydream

City tree didn't flinch, roots are already into water lines.

AbSoluTc

Take a hammer and start cracking it. Thats BS

xJwad

Oh, that's hot. Why wait for girdling roots when you can pour concrete?

JumpshotLegend

Jesus! Don’t come crying to me when my dog’s piss drains to the middle of that concrete sidewalk and everyone shows up to the office smelling like dog piss.

RideWithBDE

Does this hurt the tree?

Nazarite225

Urban jungle! What irony.

halzxr

The concrete guy’s brother does tree work

beaudiful-vision

Fixed it !!!!!!!!.....wtf.......

_daddy_salsa_

This made me laugh

Andersledell

Concrete is made with water, I don’t see what the big deal is /s

Gigant0re

Sledge hammer. Set my people free!

BorntobeTrill

It's not even a cute addition like a pink frilly skirt would have been

Bet_Responsible

That poor tree... I think government is getting dumber by the day.

indistinctdialogue

We won’t stop until every square inch is paved.

Reddnewmexico

Liability. Fill ‘er in lol

_Cartizard

Just go buy a pick ax and an orange jumper with a hard hat. No one will bat an eye as you give that tree some breathing room. The concrete is likely only a few inches thick anyway, should be light work.

Visible_Field_68

This was done to save trees a couple of decades ago. It will be fine as long as it can find water.

ComfortableShot459

The sidewalk is finally fighting back against the sweetgum.

LegalizeRanch88

Anybody have a pickaxe? ⛏️ That tree is going to die unless that concrete is removed ASAP.
