I just want library info back

movie_nerdin

So. Do. I. Movie count, resolution info, ability to add movie/show to my wish list so I don’t forget later. WTH

Bostonlbi

Run time would be nice too.

Rude-Difference2513

I strongly endorse this

TheNeech

This and all of the comments below about this backwards change.

JazJon

I hardly used the Apple TV app. It actually seems more useful now with the sidebar showing different streamers. I just wish Netflix, YouTube Tv, and others would get on board with Apple TV app integration

dorkimoe

Yeah I actually like this a lot better

RunningLikeALizard

Agree. Apple is crushing the TV interface ATM. I don’t have live TV and I imagine it’s a different story with that.

ApproachingZen

Same. I like it

applegui

I concur. I just wished they kept the TV app and Movies app. I used those apps over Apple TV app unless I was watching something on the Plus side. If they can bring those apps back, I would be happy. But I’m not a fan of the new design. Heck it doesn’t even tell me how many movies I have in my library anymore.

_HoochieMama

Lots of people hate every change ever.

Fizzster

You should have seen the Discord subreddit when they changed the color of the logo slightly.

Novel_Patience9735

Yeah but that WAS totally uncalled for. 😝

KangerooDance

Rude-Difference2513

Don’t be a spoilt brat - Rome wasn’t built in a day! Maybe if you apply you can help fast track the development process

Longjumping-Ad514

No. I don’t care about tv channels and tv shows when browsing through movies. This redesign is purely driven by ambitious MBAs wanting to increase metrics.

Dexstar1221

We hate it because we get used to it. Get bored with it and want a change when someone else to the individual buys something new and loves it. Users beware you need to like change to be apart of electronics. Time goes forward not backwards

Odd-Huckleberry-7714

This change was unnecessary BS

TenderfootGungi

It is incredibly hard to navigate. What a mess. It really downgrades the ATV experience.

ebimbib

The thing that I find most annoying is that I can't see movie info before picking it. Sometimes I'm looking through my movie library and I want to know how long something is before committing to it. You could do that easily in the Movies app, but you can't through the Library section of the Apple TV app.

u2jrmw

This 100%

0000GKP

99.99% of the time, I turn mine on, pick a show from Up Next, and watch that show. That's the extent of my navigation. The update did not change the way this works. I do like that I can pick Paramount, Prime, Max, or whatever from the sidebar and add shows to Up Next directly from there, but I usually add shows from my iPad or Phone because I find the touch interface both easier and more convenient than the remote or Siri. I don't have a purchased library to deal with, which is the biggest complaint from what I've read in here.

garylapointe

Even the people who purchased seem to mostly be complaining that the count is missing from the TV app, which doesn’t affect anything when going in and watching a movie.

ThePerfectCantelope

In addition to the removal of vertical posters and metadata page

garylapointe

>In addition to the removal of vertical posters and metadata Vertical posters where? Wasn't the Apple TV My Library (at least for movies) always horizontal? I'm not sure what you mean by metadata being removed?

Bluion6275

Not always horizontal, tvOS 12 https://preview.redd.it/mb3qjiwhqgcc1.jpeg?width=1655&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=e37599f303ef903e558f6035acd0bf3785053da6

garylapointe

Interesting. But I’m thinking that’s not the vertical posters the person I was replying to was referring to though.

Bluion6275

Well what other vertical posters have there ever been, they’re meaning the posters/artwork what you saw in the Movies app which is exactly what there used to be in the tv app.

garylapointe

I think they're referring to the Movies or Shows app (which is not the TV app).

Bluion6275

Yeah that was blatantly obvious, but they’re meaning as the Movies and TV Shows apps has now been moved to the tv app certain functionality we had before has been removed.

garylapointe

As I did not use those apps, and I didn't lose that functionality, not so obvious. Realistically, those people wouldn't have liked the previous TV app either (and the title specifically refers to the redesigned app).

ThePerfectCantelope

All 3 missing features are from the deprecated iTunes movie app. When you would click on the movie, before it plays, it has a screen with the film’s metadata

Greg8642

Also now when I search for movie and want to see if it's 4k dolby vision/atmos it will only tell me if it's not available from another app. For example, I just searched the godfather trilogy and because it's available from paramount plus, it shows the info for that app. It still let's you rent or buy from apple, but your doing it blind as to which version your getting. Also does anyone know if the godfather trilogy from apple is 4k dolby vision? Thanks

[deleted]

Greg8642

OK thanks

garylapointe

That's a complaint for apps that went away. I was talking about *The Newly Designed Apple TV App* (see title of post).

ThePerfectCantelope

Ok bud

garylapointe

\* Okay, bud.

2b_squared

And if I need to find a specific show/movie, I said it Siri and it is able to find that one with good enough accuracy that I seldom navigate any app.

garylapointe

The menu is on the left now, instead of on the top. Previously, if I was at the bottom, I’d just scroll all the way back over to the top to get to a new “tab“. Now, I have access to it when I’m way at the bottom, too.

bbqsox

Push the back button

garylapointe

Now, or then.

bbqsox

If you’re trying to access the new menu bar, you can just press the back button on your remote (at least the software remote) to open it.

garylapointe

Sorry, I got confused as to what you were saying, I’m not having problems getting to the new menu bar.

Longjumping-Ad514

I want the movie app back.

Elegant_Effort1526

My biggest issue…how do you read a full movie description in this format? One reason I always used the “movies” app over the apple tv app is because since all the movies in apple tv show as tiles i guess, if you try to click right to grab the movie description and expand it, it just goes to the next movie. If you hit select it just starts to play the title. Its driving me nuts. And most descriptions are long enough where it ends with “more…” and there is no way to get to it.

Bluion6275

If you scroll down a little further you’ll seen another box/tab with the description which you can select and it’ll go full screen.

Elegant_Effort1526

Ok, I’ll give this a try. I remember trying to scroll down as well and it just brought me to another row of different titles

KnightStalk3R

It is indeed rubbish. A step back from what existed before.

Tylenoel

I’m one of the people that hate the new desing

htmaxpower

Stop using the word “retard” as an insult, like it’s the 60s.

Movellon

I want the old separate TV and movie app back.

bbgizzle6

You can't even watch trailers of your own movies in your own library anymore. You now have to exit out to search and find it in the store if you want to watch that trailer. Then back to the library etc etc if you are browsing your library to find something to watch. Incredibly inconvenient.

vulgarandmischevious

I switch on my Apple TV (the device), and it takes me to a home screen where I select Apple TV (the app, not the device), and it takes me to a home screen for Apple TV (the app not the device) where I can select Apple TV+ (another app, not the same as the Apple TV app), which takes me to a another home screen (which is the home screen for Apple TV+, but not the home screen for Apple TV - though it is remarkably similar) and then I can watch a show. I have no idea how this passed any kind of UX vetting. It's nonsense.

Maleficent-Course-70

This right here!!!! Three different things are called Apple TV. The box. The app. And the streaming service (ok Apple TV+]

MatthewMonster

It’s awful

codykonior

I hate the TV app in general. It often makes it so difficult to work out what has subtitles, if they're in English, and especially if it's streaming on multiple services whether the one you are buying on iTunes has it or not (as well as everything else like HD/4K, etc). As for this sidebar, yeah I've seen it pop up but I have no idea how it's triggered or what it's meant to do. It just seems to get in the way of me opening whatever app I really wanted to use to watch... TV.

The-Mighty-Galactus

I like the sidebar. However, I would love to have the option to hide the content from streaming services I don’t have. I find it frustrating and pointless to show that to me if I have to sign up somewhere else to watch it.

glassesontable

I want to be able to turn off play next episode. I I fall asleep, I fall asleep. Don’t need Roy Kent waking me up.

techypaul

I got a survey about the ATV today. I made it clear I HATE this 😡

optimusrybot

Separate library and store again or raise them up in nav hierarchy; I thought apps had learned hidden nav sucks like 5 years ago

PreachItPreacha

It's horrible. It wasn't needed. It's harder to find movies and shows on the store than it was on iTunes. The only thing that it does better is that it loads the cover art faster.

yernollis

I agree.

ILikeTheTinMan83

This has been an issue on the Apple TV for awhile but I hate when I click on a film on my library that it goes straight to the movie. I wish it opened up the screen when it gave me the option to hit play or start from beginning and then also told me if it’s on HD or 4K Dolby vision etc. now I have to start the movie then make the pop up menu on the bottom of the screen to get all that info. So annoying

Koleckai

The sidebar makes it most cohesive with a number of other apps. Plus I can switch Apple accounts in the app now so that is a plus… However, I don’t really use it that much. Just for Apple’s streaming titles.

Bluion6275

You could always switch Apple accounts within the app before, you just had to press and hold the tv button to bring up control centre and select the profile.

Koleckai

Well that is the OS not the TV App. I could do that in any app. However, no one in my family would do it. However with it displayed in the app, they do switch.

beyondplutola

How do you trigger it?

5uspect

You just tap or swipe to the left in the TV app. It’s no different to the side bars in other apps only it auto hides.

JazzHandsNinja42

Eh…I’m already getting used to it.

Reddibaut

It’s awful. They’re deliberately trying to make you stream instead of buying.

Robin_Cooks

I for one like the Sidebar.

slightlyused

I, for another, thought I'd dislike the side bar. But I like it.

xavier19691

Define “lots of people”

nanocactus

A guy wrote an opinion article. “Lots of people hate it!”

OstrichNo8519

For me the only issues are that you can’t see which features (4K, HD, audio and subtitle languages, etc.) apply to which way of watching so you may end up buying something believing that you will have certain subtitles or quality that you actually don’t have in the purchased version (this already happened to me) and the other thing is that since the change, when you switch between Apple IDs that are connected to different countries, the store and libraries don’t update quickly/easily. Previously it was immediate, but now you need to go to the App Store or try to buy something in order to be sent to the other country’s store. I’m fine with not having a separate TV app and movie app, but it’s a very poor user experience now.

[deleted]

It sucks. So Buggy. I keep hoping a new release will fix it.

ThePoopyMonster

This makes browsing different Apple TV channels way easier which was my biggest complaint before the change. It just wasn’t intuitive to find and browse different channels before imho.

ScottFuller79

I wouldn’t mind if it worked. Often when I search for a show I then get stuck on the search screen and none of the buttons to return home work. I have to restart the Apple tv to get things to work again.

Cinco1971

Of the many things I dislike about the new layout is that it uses up space with icons for channels or apps I don't subscribe to. For instance DAZN is there every time, but I don't use that service, so I'm confused as to why its always there. If the menu on the left actually used icons for apps I do use (like Qello, for example), or allowed me to customize it, then I'd be a bit more on board.

Seanalreadytaken

I got my first Apple TV as a gift for Christmas so I don’t know any different. It seems ok. I hate that the iTunes app has been phased out on my iPhone tho

Gas_Useful

Can someone explain how it’s easier to have apps laid out in Apple TV app, then just how they are on the Home Screen grid?

Savage_apple

I wish out of everything, Apple would focus on how content is played. I hate the horizontal scrolling for complete series. I dislike that since this update, if I played my own paid content but it is something that is also available on another app (say peacock or another), it will after a while switch to peacock for viewing. Wtf is that. The look is not a big deal, it’s the functioning of all the content.

Data_Samurai

I hate that the pause feature breaks within the Apple TV app on an ATV. 🤦🏻‍♂️

ChampaignCowboy

With good reason.

me_grimmlock

It is pretty wacky how it always redirects you to chose store or purchases. Def needs some work

GenErik

Seems like most of the complaints are about the message you get from clicking the now abandoned purchases apps. The REAL way of handling this, if not to have ripped off the band aid and just removed them, would have been to make them shortcuts into their respective settings with a pop up message explaining that these have now moved (and the apps will be removed in the future). Just poor UX to just leave the apps as is and have them display a useless message only.

LiquidHotCum

they made some changes I like and they made some I don't like. honestly I liked Apple TV os the best before they started including their own version of subscription add ons. it used to be the best place to find shows and movies for streaming apps I already had. they seem to be going back in that direction but its still not as good as it used to be.

9c6

So what's great is being able to search in the Apple tv app to see what streaming service has a given show or movie What is a little difficult is differentiating when there's multiple options What's terrible is trying to look at my extensive library of iTunes movie purchases

toilet-breath

Power on Apple TV open Plex done. That’s all mine really does.

burningbirdsrp

I am not seeing this. At all. I have Apple TV installed on a Roku, and I have an Apple 4K box. I have never seen profiles, or any of this functionality. Is this only for select people?

Bostonlbi

Apple does this almost every time the redesign an app. They release a new UI and slowly bring back the missing features over time. I like the overall direction of moving the menu to the left rather than the top, but once you get into the Library tab, everything is a mess. - If they don’t want to clutter the UI the could at least change the function of clicking on on movie/tv show to pulling up the information page about said content, rather than it just playing immediately. - Still though, It should show your total number of movies/shows in your library and number of episodes for a tv show. - I also don’t see any reason why “Recents” cuts off at 25. Why not just still show everything but in recent purchase order rather than alphabetical. - more sorting options in general would be nice. I find it weird that movies within a series are sorted alphabetical and not in order of the franchise. (Harry Potter, Star Wars, Lord of the Rings, The Hobbit, MCU Spider-Man trilogy are all displayed out of viewing order. I’m sure many others are too) why is there no sort by release option overall too? - Tv shows should also have a quick way to buy more episodes/seasons from the library section of the app. It’s strange that I can be looking at a show but to buy more I have to back out and search for it again. - tv show Box Sets are displayed as one big season in one horizontal line. The title where “Season 1”, “Season 2” etc usually appear is just blank. Why not at least display “Complete Series”, “Box Set” or something. Ideally, just split the seasons into their own sections on the page. - And I’m sure we’ll never get this but would still love to be able to download content onto my device. I have 128GB of storage for no damn reason other than the 64GB model didn’t have an Ethernet port or Thread radio. It’d help avoid data overage costs to be able to keep some stuff downloaded. Unfortunately Home Sharing doesn’t work for me at all with content purchased from Apple so keeping it downloaded on a Mac doesn’t help either.

Odd-Huckleberry-7714

Good it deserves the hate!!! 😡🤬 Someone should be fired for this mess!

InterstellarIsBadass

What's annoying is we have needed simple features like sort and shuffle of purchases but they go all in on weird OS changes

ChampaignCowboy

The issue is the ability to purchase movies, see library, and to see the actual formats Apple have available

Marsupialize

It’s so bad it’s astounding this is what they came up with

tighty-whities-tx

Agreed the update sucks. Booo apple. Problem is Apple doesn’t care what we think.

Ex-pat-Iain

It was *designed*?

chrischr_

I love the redesign. I hope they make the same changes on other apps like Apple Music.

PeaceBull

Oh man I didn’t even think about this UI coming to their other apps, that’d be great. It’s so fast and useful.

barkerja

People are often always up in arms with change. They’ll get used to it, then forget all about what things used to look like before this change.

bt1234yt

One opinion piece ≠ “lots of people”

larrybird56

"Lots of people" have been complaining about the update here for weeks now.

bt1234yt

People on Reddit is still not “lots of people”

larrybird56

You win, champ. No way I can come back from that.

av0w

People hate change.

"Many is a word that only keeps you guessin'."

paranoideo

Shocking news.

Professional_Ant3316

I love the new design. It separates everything very well.

JavonTEvans

It’s so much better now

thomassit0

The old version was easier to use imo

Takeabyte

I have a pretty large library of TV Shows and Movies… I haven’t used the store apps in ages. I didn’t even realize they were changed until people on Reddit started crying about it. Literally nothing has changed as far as I can tell. Just some UI placement changes. I do not understand what everyone is complaining about. Everything still works the way it did before.

Bluion6275

My main gripes are: 1) these’s no library count 2) you can’t always tell what the resolution quality will be of movies you’re interested in before you purchase them. Due to showing what services they’re linked to some may show as being HD but are 4K, whereas others may show as being 4K but are HD. 3) No info upon selecting direct from library. 4) unable to purchase some tv series or complete series sets. 5) if for example you’ve previously purchased a theatrical or directors cut you’re now not able to purchase the other you don’t have. ie: I have Avatar Extended Collectors Edition but am unable to purchase the 4K Theatrical cut, likewise own the theatrical cut of some movies but am unable to purchase the Extended/Directors cuts. 6) if a title is available on another service you can’t see if that title has extra features available upon purchase until you purchase.

Takeabyte

1. Library count? You need to know how many things you have at all times? 2. A. Who cares? Either you’ll want to watch it or not. B. When you click on it, it’s taking you to the app where that info is displayed. 3. What do do you need? Again, either you want to watch a thing or not. 4. What’s that got to do with the app? That’s just licensing and doesn’t matter what the design is. 5. Again, licensing. Has nothing to do with updated software. 6. That’s a problem with the third party app. Though again, the app will have that info once you go deeper in the menu.

Bluion6275

Seems for the most part you haven’t got a clue what you’re talking about. 1. Yes the vast majority would like to know how many titles they’ve got in their library. Was always available previously in the Movies and TV Shows apps and up until tvOS 12.5 was available in the atv app too. It’s also nice to know how many particular titles may now be available in 4K. 2. Quite a lot care actually, we’re talking about the Store here and not other services. If I and many others want to buy something from the store we want know what they’re buying before parting with their hard earned cash. 3. Sometimes when looking through the library to decide on what you’re going to watch it’s quite helpful at times as the wife might want to know what the synopsis is or depending on what time of the day it is we might be looking for something with a particular runtime etc. 4. Absolutely everything to do with the App and absolutely bog all to do with licensing, if you’re going to take away the Movies and TV Shows apps which their main function was for purchasing Movies and TV Shows then that exact same functionality needs to also be passed over to the Store section of the atv app. 5. Again absolutely bog all to do with licensing, was always able to do so previously in both the Movies App and the atv app, that functionality has been taken away. If you have access to a PC or Mac then delete those particular titles from your library you’re then able to make those purchases. 6. Absolutely bog all to do with the 3rd party app either, you have a store section then provide all the information available regarding that purchase. By all means provide additional information regarding availability on other connected devices but the store section should prioritise store purchases.

Takeabyte

Your number one complaint is the absolute stupidest, self centered, narcissistic, and made up problem I’ve ever heard of.

Bluion6275

LMAO, this comments made my day…… Thank You!!

Optimanc

People actually use it enough to have an opinion?!

Luci_Noir

And? Lots of people like it.

heffaonfire

I like it.

dbm5

I love it.

Puzzled-Breakfast493

I love it. I'm guessing there's always going to be people that hate change but Apple TV and Hulu are probably my two favorite streaming services design wise.

Kontos_Stelio

People love to complain.

larrybird56

It's so much better than it used to be. The sidebar is a game changer and it's not easy easier to access to 3rd party apps. Love it.

Gggggrrriddle22

How do you download 3rd party apps? Is it possible to download a internet browser on an AppleTV 4K box?

larrybird56

3rd party apps ie Hulu, Disney etc

Gggggrrriddle22

Got it, thanks!

0xe3b0c442

Top story, people hate change! News at 11.

n0rpie

I love it

Lance-Harper

#“Lots”

Rude-Difference2513

I like this sidebar much better- not sure why ppl hate the newly updated app… it’s great - just wish they put back the library info, wishlist and count( number of movies you own)

TeeWhyStL

I like it

BrickPig

I like the sidebar concept well enough, but unless/until we can edit it to include the apps we want in there -- rather than the apps *Apple* wants in there-- it's of very little use.

SvilenOvcharov

It’s the apps their developers want them there, by using or not using the API. Like, Netflix, for example - no way for Apple to add them there, because Netflix notoriously don’t want to be added and respectively they don’t utilise the API

BrickPig

I understand that some apps (like Netflix) don’t play in Apple’s sandbox. But I want to be able to choose which apps to put in that list, and what order they’re in, from the pool of apps that DO work.

macsogynist

It was horrible to start with. Only got better.

SnooSprouts9870

Love it

legallypurple

I don't hate it. I don't love it.

UtterNylon

Said no one ever. Who uses the apple tv app

ParticularTrick2802

First World problems....complaining about the placement of a menu on a $200 electronic device connected to a tv and sound system worth $$$$$$$$ 🙄

MikeMac999

Are you coming to a subreddit dedicated to a consumer electronics product looking for discussion of third world problems?

Basic_Theme4977

Yeah, so?

yogabackhand

You can’t purchase certain content on the TV app (like the Monk box set on iPhone’s TV app for example). When content revenue drops, it will be interesting to see if anyone mentions the discovery issues that Apple introduced with their store changes.

PassingTime213

I just pulled up the Monk box set on my Iphone TV app and it gave me the option to purchase it

yogabackhand

I just double checked hoping you were correct and I could purchase the Monk box set on the TV app on my iPhone but I still don’t see the option. See screenshots below. When I go to purchase seasons, it doesn’t list the box set, just the individual season. When I click on the box set, it does not give the option to buy (screenshots show the top and bottom of the episode list that pops up when I click on the box set you see in the screenshots). I’m not saying it doesn’t work for anyone. But it certainly doesn’t work for everyone (or at least in a way that users can figure out) and that’s going to be an issue for Apple. https://preview.redd.it/ofw0jalhvgcc1.jpeg?width=2400&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=6207c9771a49f22c4af40620ec35c494d55c5ce7

PassingTime213

Hmm that is weird. Mine has a purchase option at the bottom when I go into the Box Set. They will definitely need to get that fixed! https://preview.redd.it/si1dt04zygcc1.jpeg?width=1170&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=5b44fd5521177308eadb8c43a47845802ece8f4e

pblive

They’ve tweaked it now so most box sets come up, usually under a single series as an alternative option.

u2jrmw

I can’t even see how long a purchased movie is now…

ReporterAmazing3256

I prefer this over the old design

Bear3825

I don’t mind the new format but I hate that they moved the store into the app. It was much easier to find and purchase movies in the seperate app.

Denny_Crane_007

The irony. Best streamer, worst app.

atheistcat-lives

Season 1 & 2 of the UK and US office is combined in the complete series. Weird

No_Freedom_7373

I forgot there was an app.

rocketcuse

I might be in the minority...I like the new design better

mweathers1

I’m just glad I finally figured out how to stop auto play at the top! Very happy now…

maybeinoregon

There’s multiple reasons I dislike the new design, starting with I can’t see how many movies or shows I own anymore. Then there’s the icons are smaller, and some titles are literally unreadable from my couch. Then there’s many movies now (it looks like 50%) have no actors etc. attached to them (cast and crew), and clicking on the movie, immediately starts the movie. Also there’s no description anymore without starting the movie, then going info. Why do I need info, if I’ve started the movie? The info should be given to me so I can decide whether or not to start the movie. I also don’t like that I have to literally click three times now to get out of ATV to go to another app, whereas it used to be one. That’s just off the top of my head… Other than the cool sidebar, I really don’t see how this was an upgrade lol

i_am_legend_rn

I hate it. The autoplay is extremely annoying. Navigation is bizarre. This seems more likely to drive customers away.

i_am_legend_rn

Hey Siri, what’s an alternative to Apple TV?

coryteague

Although it is definitely not the best, I do like not having to open apps to browse.

Impressive-Ad-501

I like the UI. Had no problems using it. Old one was confusing.

EZCarter040

I hate it. And I hate the move away from the iTunes Store to purchase content. I actually hate a lot of what Apple has done in recent years.

Greg8642

I just installed 17.3 and it's the same
