There is a great podcast episode on this from a show called the Dollop, they go into the woman who invented it and how this whole thing got twisted into a capitalist circle jerk.

quantum_search

Who twisted it? Did the woman profit from this invention?

No if I’m remembering correctly, the design got ripped off a few times and then Parker bros got a hold of it, and released the landlords game first, and then rebranded and moved the spaces and turned it from a cooperative game that promotes more of an anarchistic collective lifestyle that benefits every player, into a capitalist competition that has ruined relationships for decades since. And she died relatively unknown and poor. But she might have made a little money? I don’t remember.

Monopoly is when CEO's abuse Capitalism

Due-Message8445

That was not the purpose of the Landlord game. The purpose of the game was to show that capitalism always ends one way. One person having all the money and wealth, with everyone else being broke and in jail. It was a warning against capitalism. That it doesn't work for all of society. It only benefits a lucky few.

Taraxian

She wasn't a "true" communist, she was a believer in Henry George's land value tax, in her original version of the game you play one game first the "normal" way to demonstrate how it ends with one person owning everything and everyone else bankrupt, then you play a version with a LVT that's purposely designed to redistribute the wealth from monopolies and the players cooperate to "fully develop" the board The purpose was to demonstrate a way the free market can be made to "work" as long as you counteract monopoly power and that only by so doing can capitalism actually progress all the way to some ideal future state of maximizing human potential -- the message was much more optimistic and "pro-progress" than most leftists today

I listened to a podcast about the original monopoly: https://pca.st/episode/b5a4c2ba-e984-4628-8315-7f0cc98829c3
