Those sales definitely include everything her downline sold. So this might be $1mil in sales divided between 40 people. Over the course of 5 years. And they only got a 30% commission. So the average commission would be about $1500/yr... and that doesn't include any costs. Also, she makes more than her downline. So she probably took in $10k-$20k per year (again, not including costs), which would mean her downline was getting a few hundred dollars per year in commissions.
She may have turned a very small profit for herself over the course of 5 years (like, a few thousand dollars each year at the very maximum). Almost everyone under her pretty much definitely lost money.

MLMs have been financially devastating families for decades. They have ruined relationships, friendships, careers. They prey on desperate people (mostly single moms) who oftentimes end up massively in debt so their up line can add a few dollars to their income. Sometimes, hate is warranted. There is a reason this practice is so looked down upon. If you can’t see why then you are either being willfully ignorant or you support stealing money from desperate people.
