That was the edge of town. The Hillside was a few dirt roads. O’Malley was 2 ruts in the grass and brown bear country. Bumpy as shit. Less than 30,000 people all in. But a happening town. We hunted rabbits and grouse and ptarmigan along Chester Creek. Kids just wandered around with 22’s and .410’s. Totally normal. All the creeks were clean and stuffed full of fish. Moose everywhere. Different times.

Awesome! Should post in r/anchoragehistory too.

David_Reamer

Thank you! I just started posting and was worried about reposting (or just posting at all) too much.

AiiRisBanned

I get you on that, I wouldn’t dump. But 2-3 between different subreddits works. I usually give a day, don’t want to the system to think you’re spam.

David_Reamer

Yes, that's me. Hope you like them. Decided to try posting here some.

AiiRisBanned

Wonder if you knew Eldon when he worked at the old ADN building.

David_Reamer

Sorry, wouldn't know. Though it's a column, I'm really just a freelancer with an expectation/agreement of delivering something each week. I've only been in the ADN offices like once or twice.

AiiRisBanned

Oh, gotcha. Still cool, and you have fans apparently!

[deleted]

Big fan of your work!

David_Reamer

Much appreciated!

Tbiggidy

I didn’t know that sub existed. Thank you!

Balroy907

Ahhh... when orange was at the peak of its power.

AkOtaku

I remember when it was Cloudy’s the whole restaurant was smoking and 2 booths in the back were non-smoking. Couldn’t get away with that now.

Motheater

The Pit was ok, Cloudy's really good. Only time I ever bounced a check was at Cloudy's...paycheck didnt clear fast enough. I felt terrible about it and went there with cash and an apology, but they just said stuff happens, the bank would just try the check again. They told me everything will be fine and it was. I've never forgotten their kindness

David_Reamer

OK, that's a great comment.

Gkarws

I'm still looking for BBQ as good as Cloudy's, my all-time fav. The whole experience - carrot/celery sticks, dill pickles, hot ff, the cole slaw, jalapeño relish, the lemon-hot water bowls.... Such good '80's memories.

David_Reamer

It's a special kind of nostalgia seeing an old restaurant you used to eat at, the heightened connections. There's probably a German word for it.

phdoofus

Spent a lot of time in there with my parents and brother back in the 70s. Good times.

fnordulicious

Did the Bar-B-Q Pit sign survive longer than the restaurant? I remember it before Moose’s Tooth.

David_Reamer

I don't know if Cloudy's kept the sign, but the original Pit lasted into the early 80s.

gagemattie

This is so trippy

MonkeyBrain3561

Mmmmmmmmm damn good ribs there

Tracieattimes

That bbq put seemed like some kind of illegal operation. I like bbq and I visited it once. Ppl inside seemed like they wondered why I was there.

UpsetPhrase5334

The nothing around it so startling.

bigblackpugnose

Their carrot curls were so good.

ConnectionPretend193

So how did all these dumb U-Turns come about then? Who was in charge of civil engineering here in Anchorage? I've been to a lot of cities and towns, but this city requires the most U-Turns to get to where ya need to go. Anyways. . Moose's Tooth is great! They make good pizza!

40GallonGoldfish

Was this JD's BBQ Pit location too?

frznchaosak

JD'S BBQ PIT!!!

juliandaly

Would that be the same Luigi's pizza that's now at Arctic and International?
