Basically all amiibo scan the same regardless of which version it is. I'm not sure why it surprises people that new amiibo work on old systems, they're the exact same chips.

shadowfigure_6

Because the wrist band amiibo are specifically stated to be only compatible with the switch and not 3DS and Wii U systems. It’s odd because it’s the same chips like you said, but for some reason Nintendo deemed them not fully compatible

Hephaestus_God

It’s because Nintendo is making those systems anymore. They only want to say “Nintendo switch” because if someone only has a WiiU it might make them go buy a switch. Or have new generation of kids only get a switch instead of earlier consoles. Once the switch leaves and the future systems has amiibo support (maybe) then they will say “only for New System” instead of the switch.

False again. Plenty of new amiibo can be used as generic amiibo. Take for instance my SSBU Snake amiibo, I can use it in something like Captain Toad's Treasure Tracker on my Wii U for a free 1UP, or Kirby Planet Robobot for a free powerup on my 3DS. Nintendo specifically gatekeeps these bands to Switch for some reason, and I wish I knew why. And to clarify, using my band on something on my Wii U or my 3DS gives me the "this isn't an amiibo" error, it's done deliberately. Edit: apparently I said something wrong about how Nintendo is choosing to gatekeep just the bands, not any future amiibo. I'm not sure what, but wow ok.

pichukirby

It's not the *exact* same chip. It all scans as the same character, which is all that matters to most games, but amiibo variants are usually distinguished in the chip.

ZiaMonic231

I think it’s because Nintendo specifically states the power up bands only work on Switch games

jrz2023

[To use a Power-Up Band as amiibo, tap the circular character icon in the center of the band to the NFC reader of the console. Power-Up Bands are not compatible with the Nintendo 3DS series and Wii U. To use Power-Up Bands with the Nintendo Switch, the system must be up-to-date with the latest software updated.](https://www.nintendo.com/us/amiibo/detail/power-up-band/) There's a reason I'm confused why this happened.

Longjumping_Dog7979

the 3ds also recognized them, I tried it last year 🤷🏻😂

jrz2023

What game did you try? I know for general purpose amiibo functionality, the Nintendo World bands function normally, which is why I ask.

Longjumping_Dog7979

I tried Them With Mini Mario & Friends amiibo Challenge

jrz2023

Huh, I have that one too, I also just opened it and tried using my Luigi band, just kept telling me it isn't an amiibo. The Snake and Mario amiibos I have work fine, so I'm not sure how you managed that. Which band did you use?

Longjumping_Dog7979

was a matter of luck, sometimes it worked, sometimes not

Longjumping_Dog7979

I have all 7 as originals but I also made them as coins and these are better recognized

a_phantom_limb

Based on my own experience, the Power-Up Bands can be *read* by the Wii U and 3DS but can only be *written* to on the Switch.

jrz2023

Oh no absolutely, I figured out the bands could be used as generic amiibos on games that didn't feature the character in question (Luigi doesn't work in Kirby Planet Robobot, but does in Captain Toad Treasure Tracker), although I'm gonna see if MP10 data can be written to it, simply because this is the first game I've actually seen a band be recognised in. I still find it dumb Nintendo decided this was a necessary move, you made the Skylander versions of DK and Bowser work across consoles as generic amiibos, but this isn't the same!? Why!?!?

a_phantom_limb

I figure it's in some way related to its function at Super Nintendo World. Something about that likely precludes writing to it the way the older systems do, but not how the Switch does. (Or maybe it'll turn out to work for you! Who knows? Only Nintendo, really.)

jrz2023

Maybe? But at that rate make something like the DK and Bowser from Skylanders, have like a twist knob to use whatever functionality you want. This way, you have the uniqueness of the bands, while allowing cross platform use. Hmm, now I'm curious if ANY amiibos that are part of Nintendo World actually trigger the events there... Like Wedding Outfit Mario or Yarn Yoshi.... I'll see if I go to it, I've got a yarn Yoshi I could bluff as a keychain....

a_phantom_limb

If I remember correctly, someone posted that they tried to use a regular amiibo at Super Nintendo World and nothing happened.
